Excellent Traditional pub serving excellent ales, roaring fires and bed and breakfast. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Food was excellent in the evening and at breakfast. Service was a little disjointed due to an elderly lady on the service team who continually interfered in services already being provided by more than capable staff. Darlene is an asset to the business and was a star throughout our stay. Looking forward to returning soon !

Just called in for a pint of Old Peculiar, I was not disappointed. I love to call in for a quick pint with my dog. Friendly staff and good beer. A great pub, in the middle of nowhere, lovely, friendly staff and well-kept beer. I feel so lucky to live close to this gem.

Absolutely fantastic pub! Stayed here while doing the Coast to Coast walk. Fantastic atmosphere, decent rooms (for the price) and massive food potions too! Highly recommend

Location was amazing and the snow made it magical, food was huge but gorgeous, service and rooms were second to none.. Already booked for January 2026

What a perfect location for a bar. Wonderful friendly welcome and great internal layout. A place this good deserves good food and good beers which it has.

Huge steak pies and beer for every taste. Great lunch park up. Long walks with the dogs here then back for a proper dinner.

Stayed Saturday 28th December 2024 Lovely clean , comfortable room . Beautiful evening meal . Highly recommend steak pie 😁 Unfortunately breakfast was disappointing Table for five . Three full English ordered along with poached eggs . After a lengthy wait two breakfast arrived which we were told had been ordered without hash browns . This was not the case . We accepted the food and hash browns were brought separately. Unfortunately myself and husband continued to wait for our food . After a ridiculous amount of time I asked a staff member about our food . She clearly had no idea what I was talking about but went through to the kitchen and reordered . Eventually it arrived but unfortunately no apology was given . Sorry I myself work in hospitality and this is not acceptable. An apology wouldn’t have gone a miss considering our party of five all ended up eating separately. Maybe a little retraining in customer service for certain staff members would be an idea . Also there was only our table of five and another couple eating at the time so In my opinion not run off their feet at that point . All this being said it wouldn’t put me off staying again .

Visited this brilliant little pub September 2024. Its in the middle of nowhere, but absolutely worth the drive out into the North York Moors for a good lunch. Cozy 16th century inn with magnificent views, at least on a clear day like we had. It was a blustery day so my wife didnt want to sit outside and enjoy the vista, but luckily we got a table right away inside. It was packed in there. Its a popular spot for lunch and people clearly travel to enjoy the fare. Its very cozy inside, low beams, dark tight corners - watch your head, I saw a couple of taller gents bump their head entering the bar. The bar is right at the back and is nice and long, easy to get in and was quick getting served. Atmosphere obviously great in there, and staff were busy but always courteous. We both had a sandwich and chips (and an ale) and it was pretty good. I'd like to go back and try some of the other dishes folks have recommended.

Fantastic old rustic pub in a wonderful location. Really a must visit. Excellent menu items with chef specials. Friendly customer service and prompt delivery of food orders. Good generous portions, highly recommended.

Updated review one year on: continues to be great. Fabulous food and service again This is one of my favourite inns. Food always top notch, generous portion sizes and good service. The views are just amazing and location perfect for peace and tranquillity. Haven't used the accommodation but I understand it's very good.

The Lion Inn is a favourite eating place of mine, my family have been visiting this place for more than forty years now winter and summer alike, we haven't been disappointed yet.

Food Brilliant, Treated my Dog so good ,ask for meat tit bits and she got sausages 2 off them .

Absolutely love this place, always made to feel very welcome from the moment you step in. Food is beautiful and home made with very generous portions. I have only stopped in the small basic room twice but it's all I needed with extremely comfortable soft beds.

3rd visit now . Had a great cycle , some tough hills, straight back to the fire and a beer. We had a room for the night , comfiest mattress ever. I had a Hot Shot Parmo for my meal and the portions are AMAZING . Mari had lamb rump that was gorgeous....the fish and chips were massive . We will be back . Love it.

We had a table booked for 9, but unexpectedly, we had 2 + a dog. So I asked when we arrived if table could be adjusted, I was spoken by an assistant very rudely "carnt have dogs in dinning area find a seat in the bar" my first thought was leave, but it had taken us 1hr 20mins to get there. So we decided to stay got a table for our extra visitors who were visiting us from UAE. Anyway we got an assistant called Darlyn she was 100% caring and I asked for her throughout our stay. our starters came a good hour after ordering (bear in mind it was busy) mains were out of this world. The dog at our party was a working dog. Our visitors didnt want to make a scene, so we left it. I paid £300 bill and left. 1st visit for us all. Great views of the moors. I would appreciate a reply.

Fab place to go. Very very busy.

We called in for a drink after a walk around the Rosedale circular with our two dogs. The fire was lit and available seats were sparse! We managed to time it well for two bar stools to become available. The staff were attentive and drinks were good. It had a great atmosphere too.

We stayed overnight and honestly could not fault anything at all. The staff were amazing, room was comfortable, quiet with great views across the moors. We had evening meal and breakfast, both of which were well cooked and presented, tasty and value for money. Portion sizes are huge, even the "smaller" versions!. Overall a fab place with quality accommodation, tasty food and wonderful staff. We would definitely recommend!

Good food and good helpings. The best times to go are during the week. Weekends can be very busy and there can be too many dogs.

Great pie and good beer to follow a long day walking. The dogs and warmth an added bonus - would happily revisit and settle in with a few more pints of Wainwright!

Booked in for Sunday meal in restaurant part of the Inn. Large menu/drinks selection to choose from. Most meals in the ‘just below £20’ price range……quite expensive for what provided but had a small Sunday ‘meats/veg’ meal……very enjoyable and not too long a wait to be served. Pity the gravy was ‘lumpy’ as too hot water used on the granules ! Pint of Moretti lager now £6…..like most other places now I guess. It was very full ( but plenty of spaces between tables) so I recommend booking a table in advance. It’s a pity they cannot improve the car parking area as it is full of potholes and , as it was raining today , full of puddles. Also, it would be nice if they could convert a part of the restaurant area to like the other 2 smallish bar areas as the restaurant parts will accommodate lots of people. Very scenic location. Staff friendly and welcoming. The owner, Barry, came to chat at our table, lovely, interesting man. The food is lovely, good portion sizes. Haven't stayed over for many years, so I am unable to comment on the rooms.

Everything you'd want from a pub. Roaring fire, welcoming staff, generous portions of tasty food and a decent selection of beers. Website doesn't say it (i think) but they still offer a perfect spot for coast to coast camping with good facilities.

As amazing now as it was a decade ago. Well worth the trip!

Not the best night's sleep.. The 4poster in room 9 bangs against the wall, the wardrobe up against the bed head space, meaning it was uncomfortable for me.. It might be me, but maybe I should've said something, but everyone seemed so busy. Staff were very friendly by the way, whether it was the bar or breakfast.. Very remote place, but we knew that, and that is part of it's charm.

A great old pub, hasn't changed in years which is a good thing! Great choice of beers and the meals looked very generous although we didn't eat there this time. Big car park. Fantastic location.

Went for a drive on the moors and found this little gem🥇good pint, good food and the gravy was to die for, all of this and a fantastic unspoil view of the moors.find this place and try it out, you will not be dissapointed👍

Ate here for my friends birthday a few months back. The food was amazing, service quick and friendly and despite being quite secluded it was a very lively pub. Would highly recommend!

Good food. Price is a bit high but the portions are huge and it tastes great. Never have to wait long for a table even when it's busy and the surrounding moorland is beautiful.

Stopped for a late lunch whilst doing the Lyke Wake Walk. The pub was quite busy so I was worried that there might be a bit of a wait for food but this wasn't the case. Cheerful bar staff took my order and I went and sat outside to enjoy the views and wait for my meal which arrived very quickly. I ordered a jacket potato with cheese savoury topping as I thought it would be a lighter lunch option but the jacket potato was huge with a generous helping of very tasty topping. The pub is in an amazing location. It was a shame I could't sample any of the ales they had on as I had a long walk still ahead. Delicious good value food.

One of my favourite pubs I’ve ever been to. Perfect location for a pub to be. It is in the middle of the North Yorkshire Moors with a perfect 360° view of the surrounding of the Moors. Food and drink wise, there is a great selection of food and drink to choose from. All of the ingredients are top quality. The portion size is amazing; they give you a lot. The food is absolutely delicious; one the best meals from the pub I’ve ever had. Customer service is great. All friendly and helpful. Definitely coming here again!

A lovely setting for meeting up with old friends over a delicious lunch. Very attentive staff, but in no way intrusive. Food was delicious, and at the risk of angering the few, the portions were too large. That is in no way a complaint, simply a personal observation. None of our party could finish their delicious meal.

Dropped I'm for a meal with family visitors for a meal and drink. Good choice of ales and food. Meat pie was delicious. Been here before to see band and Female Guitarist (Dooson). Great night. Stayed over in Motorhome but I think they have now stopped overnight stays in car park.

Very nice Pub with Rooms located overlooking the North York Moors National Park from a very elevated position. Stopped by for something to eat, the food was very good but do beware portion sizes are extremely large! I enjoyed a chicken curry that was very substantial & it was of the small size portion. If you do order a starter then you had better have a very big appetite 😁 the pub is very cozy & friendly with outdoor seating also available.

Popped in for Sunday lunch, place absolutely heaving as it was a nice day, lost of bikers outside. Service a little slow as a result but food excellent- gargantuan portions, lost of fresh veg, good beer- altogether excellent and wonderful view- a nice destination pub.

Great spot for good! Healthy servings. Best meal I've had in York. Minestrone soup and JD Pulled Beef sandwich. Cozy old pub on the ridge, warm and inviting little corners and rooms.

A great pub, servings are huge, so great value for money. A welcome rest on the way from Osmotherley to Ravenscar. You can camp in the beer garden too for a small fee, handy for coast to coast and walks in the area.

The pub appears like an oasis from the moors....great place to get warm and refuel.

Went for a Sunday dinner it was one of the best I have had service was spot on and they serve guinness 00 only one thing if you are a taller person mind your head on the beams

The quality of the food was well below the level I expected for the prices they were charging. My wife was served what appeared to be a microwave rice dish that you would buy in a supermarket for just a couple of pounds. Beautiful location but we won't eat there again.

Best meal out for a long time. Starter was a mistake, beautiful but left little room for the huge portion on the main course. Well worth the journey but make sure you book a table. Very popular.

Fab food (chicken parmo, veggie lasagne, steak, delicious cauliflower/brie soup) and great service. Waitress went out of her way to be friendly and cheerful. Only complaint - too much food… but we were given a doggy bag very willingly! Loved it - will be back!

We stayed one night on our coast to coast walk. Just a very wonderful place to be between walks. Cosy bar with real fires. Super friendly and helpful staff. Quirky room but so warm and comfy and to have a bath after a long days walk was amazing!! Food generous and well cooked both evening and morning. Just wish we could have stayed longer! Thanks all for a great stay!

Great range of real ales mainly from Yorkshire area. We didn't eat but the food looked very good with big portions. Some good walks from the pub onto the moors via old railway lines.

£3 camping with a shower and £9.50 breakfast. Charlotte was great and fun for breakfast!

Came across the Lion Inn by accident and we were amazed. The quality of the food and drinks were excellent, I can highly recommend the beef sandwich with chips. A great variety of ales/lagers/beers. We will definitely make a point to go again.

Went for some lunch and it was excellent portion sizes are great for the cost, food was delicious and the nearby walks are stunning. Can be cool in the area if you are walking after/before.

Have been visiting the Lion Inn since 1985. Stayed several times and eaten here at least twice a year, every year. The round trip is about 92 miles, so a long way to go. However, the steak pie was always The Best and the standard by which all others were judged. We heard it had changed hands so called to see if all was still well. I ordered steak pie as usual which came with very thick pastry - far from the light pastry lid of the past. The steak itself was tasty, but dry as sticks and needed the whole gravy boat to moisten it up. Disappointed is not the word after nearly 40 years of consistency. The price had sky-rocketed to £19.95 - so top price for worsening quality. Beer was ok - tried a sheep and theakstons which were both well kept and tasty. However, purely on the quality of the food, I won't be hurrying back and that is really sad.

The 4th cheapest of the 17 accommodations I booked for the C2C. A large pub with rooms in the middle of nowhere. A busy place but staff friendly and quick. The room was clean but tiny – slighty bigger than the double bed – which was comfy. The bathroom was small with just a shower attachment. Dinner was good pub grub and the breakfast in the morning was cooked to order and very nice. The only thing that spoilt it was being charged £6.95 for a small bread roll with some grated cheese for lunch. This was about twice the average I had been paying for not a lot. But, at the end of the day a good price for the room and brekkie.

Never stayed but I'm sure would be nice here ate some food really good quality and enjoyed the place, the atmosphere was great 👍

Possibly one of the most atmospheric pubs that I have ever visited in England. Great food and real ale selection. Warm fires, low ceilings, historic interior, and dog-friendly. We got here on foot after a train ride from Whitby to Castleton Moor. Return was a local taxi cab back to the train. Approx. 7- mile hike along the east half of the circular Esk Valley Walk. Scenic, easy, and mostly dry on our day. Wish I was there now!

We went for a meal with freinds and family. Never disapionted, always come out full. They give great potions. And superb food.
