Never have we been to a hotel with such friendly welcoming staff. Everyone we met showed us the greatest hospitality. Nothing was too much trouble. We ate in the restaurant on both nights of our stay and enjoyed the food and again the friendly attitude of the staff. Breakfast was varied with a choice of hot dishes including Arbroath smokies. Our room was spacious and warm with a view over the green. We will certainly return if we visit Montrose again. The birdwatching was good too!

The food was excellent and beautifully presented. We were staying at the hotel and ate dinner there 2 consecutive nights. There seemed to be only one vegetarian option, however the chef suggested an additional couple of options which he would be happy to cook for me. I have food allergies which were carefully accommodated too. The meals were delicious, the staff were welcoming, polite, friendly, efficient and could not have done more for us. I would be very happy to return and do recommend it. The Links Hotel had been a wealthy mill owners family home in the 1800s and many grand period features still remain, it is interesting and atmospheric. i Our bedroom was very comfortable.

Arrived to a warm reception both in temperature and from the greeting. Our coats were taken and the choose of going straight to our table or a table in the bar till our meal was ready. Opting for the bar we were given what can only be described as a tour of the gins available. Gin was our thing this year. We enjoyed the friendly atmosphere till or meal was ready. Your seat at the table had a small silver box with a party popper a rasping balloon. Party horn and streamers. The Christmas cracker banged when pulled. Enclosed the hat, the joke, and quality item. The meal was excellent value and supper tasty. We had a great time. Our visit exceeded all our expectations. Thank you for an awesome evening.

After consulting tripadvisor for somewhere decent to have lunch in Montrose, we decided to try the Links Hotel. We found ourselves in a lovely warm conservatory area which was a blessing given the cold winter weather outside.I chose the salad from the specials board which was an absolute delight with lots of salmon, smoked salmon and prawns in a lovely light Marie rose dressing. The salad included lovely thin slivers of melon and avocado and it was beautifully presented. My husband chose the Sri Lankan Chicken Curry from the main menu which was delicious and also well presented. There was a bit of a wait for the food but when we were presented with two amazing dishes the time was all forgotten about. We would definitely recommend and return to this restaurant again.

When we visit my parents on a Sunday we always go to the Links carvery. This is held every Sunday and is always very good and very good value. The starters are all laid out on tables so you help yourself. They comprise standard stuff such as prawn cocktail, pate, soup. The main courses are all cut from massive roasts of beef, gammon and lamb and are accompanied by different sorts of potatoes and veg with a choice of gravy. Then the desserts are, again, laid out in a different part of the restaurant and are, again, pretty standard stuff-fruit salad, cheesecake, jelly. We always enjoy it and are always full by the end of the meal which, for me, is very important! There is a bar which serves a modest selection of beers and there is wine too although we very rarely have wine at lunch.

We dined here on Saturday and Sunday nights. On the Saturday the restaurant was very busy and there was a bit of a wait for the table. We were seated in the bar and our drinks were fetched whilst we perused the menu. The system seemed to work well.We would recommend booking at busy times. We chose to sit in the conservatory - which seems less formal in character and allowed us to make the most of the long summer evenings. We would wholeheartedly recommend the Arbroath smokie tartlet and also the surf n turf which was one of the specials on the Sunday night. The steak was incredibly tender. The staff in the restaurant and bar were very friendly and helpful (without being too attentive).

The restaurant features wonderfully prepared soups, salads and entrees including classic Scottish fare. The soup of the day was a lentil soup that was hearty and full of complex flavor. The mixed grill was a great deal for 20 pounds. We landed at the Links Coffee Shop by default as the place we had intended to eat was full but what a great discovery. My companion had a sandwich and I had a toasted sandwich both of which were served with chips and a side salad. We both ended up having to ask for a doggy bag as we couldn't finish our sandwiches but they were far too good to leave behind. The service was good, the food delicious (and a reasonable selection on the menu), the only reason I have not given full marks is that the coffee shop lacked character and atmosphere; it was a bit stark and uninviting when we first entered but that is only a very minor negative in an otherwise very pleasant experience.

We took a friend from Norfolk to this hotel restaurant as the chef Frank (Franck?) had been recommended. For about forty years I spent three or four nights a week in hotels throughout Europe and North America and have experienced the highs and lows of hotel food. Indubitably Frank's food at the Links is the best ever. Local venison, crab, salmon and lamb, on this occasion washed down by local ales from the Burnside Brewery as Richard is not a wine drinker. The meal was faultless and showed the chef's French heritage and training in the best possible light. I am sure this place is not as well known as it should be as one does not normally equate fine dining with hotels, but I can say that if the rooms (recently upgraded I believe) are even half as good as the food then you are in for a treat. When we complimented the chef to our waitress, the redoubtable Frank took a few moments out from the kitchens to chat with us - I think I may have to keep an eye on my wife as she certainly fell for his Gallic charm. One word of advice, be open minded and try the French based dishes, although the staple steaks are on the menu and no doubt very good, they are only hanging on for the benefit of the less adventurous.

Our table for 4 was booked by a family member for 7.30pm. I myself arrived early, and yes, the rest of the family was 5 minutes late. However, our drink order was taken while sitting in the bar area, delivered about 20 minutes later, another 30 minutes for the food order to be taken, and another 45 minutes before we we shown to our table, and eventually our food arrived. The meal itself was average. I understand (through the fairly polite staff), that there was a function on at the same time. I'm afraid I don't find this a viable excuse for a long standing hotel such as this. I thought perhaps it was just a one off situation, just one of those nights for a busy place in the center of Montrose. Afterward, other locals asked where we ate, when I told them the name of the Hotel their automatic reply "bet you had a long wait then?".

We went on a Sunday lunch for the carvery option & if it had been just myself then it would certainly be 4/5 because the three meat options (4 slices in total) were so succulent (Gammon, Lamb & Beef) and tender I could have happily gone to a meaty heaven, with a little yorkshire pud on the side. However, we had a vegan in the party (I had notified the hotel 24 hrs before and was assured a suitable starter, main and dessert would be offered) along with a Sunday lunch fanatic. Upon arriving, our vegan was offered the mains option of a veg curry or pasta with tomato sauce (she opted for pasta). Thinking it would be an egg free pasta as it was offered to her knowing her dietary requirements, however 10 mins after ordering the waitress came back and said "you've ordered the pasta, that's got eggs in it" and so she had to go for the curry which delayed her main course by another 10 minutes (we'd already eaten most of our carvery options). The waiting staff were not the friendliest in the world and didn't offer a smile over lunch or look to engage in a polite conversation. It was a reasonable price at either £12.95 for two courses or £15.95 for three courses, the home made fruit crumble with a nutty topping accompanied by Maggi's vanilla ice cream was a popular final dish, but I was disappointed with the way our vegan was treated and no one apologised for the original mistake. Unsure I'll be returning.

When visiting a friend in Montrose, we went to the Links Hotel Coffee shop for lunch. On entering we chose a table in the window. The waiter came over immediately and offered us the menus. He asked what we would like to drink. We selected the soup and sandwich snack lunch. The soup was Cream of Vegetable (no choice). There was an excellent choice of sandwiches, baguettes or paninis. The waitress took our order, then we waited approx 12 minutes for the soup, despite the Coffee Shop not being very busy. The sandwiches came before we had finished our soup. They were very nicely served with salad and chips. The helpings were very generous and everything was very tasty. During our snack lunch, the chef came out and spoke to the clientele at all the tables - a very nice touch. We would recommend the Links Hotel Coffee Shop to anyone looking for somewhere to have a snack lunch in Montrose.

Stopped at the Rookery for lunch having cycled from Dundee. The food was excellent and the staff as previous mentioned were at another level. Whatever they are doing they are doing it right. Would highly recommend and will most definitely be back.

Packed on the day of our visit and we had probably the last table. Food was excellent quality and service was very friendly if s we’d bit haphazard at times. Part of meal arrived late and incomplete but overall very good

We won't be returning, there were just too many things that have put us off. Very unfriendly welcome, to being seated right next to the lift where hotel guests were coming in and out (yes, we should have said something, but there should never have been a table put there). As for the food, who thought it would be a good idea to smother the loaded fries in loads and loads of cheese sauce (was supposed to be cheese) that was the most awful thing to keep eating. As for the Townhouse salad, how can they even call it a salad and charge those prices. Was literally small portions spooned on the plate of what ever was in the fridge with chips and your chosen salad (my child is far more creative with food). Then there's the scampi, where they put the chips and the barely cooked bullet peas in separate dishes, but all it did was make it look like very little and certainly wasn't worth the money paid. My teenaged child ordered a reduced portion as they wanted to get a pudding. However, they were so disappointed in their meal where a lot of it was left and they were then never going to order anything else. It costs a lot of money going out for a meal and we will happily pay a bit more if we know we're going to enjoy our meal. The Townhouse was a huge disappointment, not recommended.
