Quirky York pub, definitely a good place to check out for visitors. Thursday night live jam night for musicians is good entertainment

Booked a table for 2 in the dining area tonight Sunday 29th Dec 7.30pm. Arrived punctual at 7.25pm to be told we couldn't have made a reservation as they stopped serving food at 7.30pm. We showed confirmation of the booking details and were told that it clearly says on the website food is served until 7.30pm. It clearly Doesn't, it says food is served until 8pm. I booked my table, received confirmation and walked a mile to this restaurant to be turned away 😡. Anyone know what else I could have done to avoid this and hope it doesn't happen to anyone else

I first visited this cellar bar on June 24th 1995. ( Rugby World Cup final was on ). Been a few times, first for Ic and Flic. Felt sorry for the barmaid as the bar was understaffed on this visit. Service was thus slow. Had a pint of Greene King IPA. ( I think, 10 pints into the day!) Time to head to the Station for a couple in the York Tap and train home. Ic and Flic love York.

We arrived a few minutes before 12 midday as was abruptly told they were closed. The staff entering to pub were rude, when we asked them what time they opened. Ordering food we weren’t allowed to have a coffee with our meal, as the coffee machine hadn’t warmed up, obviously boiling a kettle is too difficult. The food was edible, however the garlic bread had been burnt and very dry, the rocket was very wilted and slimy. No sooner than we’d finished the waitress was clearing both our plates, taking our drinks which hadn’t been finished. She was virtually standing over us, felt very rushed and pressured to get out. We’d only been in there for just over 40 minutes at that point. Shame because it’s a was a lovely pub on previous occasions when we’d visited.

We arrived just as doors were opening as from previous experience I knew it would be busy although maybe not so much as the weather was terrible thanks to Storm Darragh! I’m glad we went early as it soon filled up but we had a lovely table and chairs. The staff were welcoming and helpful. Despite the queues at the bar everyone was jolly and they served people as quickly as they could. We ordered food - Steak& Ale pie and the Halloumi and chilli jam wrap - delicious 😋 would recommend. While I have visited previously it was my partners first visit and he loved it. Was only sorry we had to leave for the panto - oh no you didn’t 😂 Thank you to the staff for a wonderful festive visit 🎅🏻

We were in York for the Xmas market so knew it would be busy and booked a table, not knowing the area we used trip advisors top 10 and booked lendells. Honestly it was disappointing and not worth the hype! The eating area was downstairs with no one manning it to show you to your table so the onus is on you to find the table with your name on or grab a member of staff. We found someone as was super busy and all the tables were full they y hen took us to our table. We were not told that the fryers were broken when we sat limiting menu choices and was also not advised that it was not table service (you have to order at bar or on app with zero signal being in a cellar!) once we ordered the food that came out was lovely and was very tasty. The waitress was friendly and attentive After this we ordered desserts, these were delivered to us by the waiter and he got our desserts muddled up and it was a few mouthfuls in before we realized (sticky toffee and Xmas cake look surprisingly similar when covered in custard) So after a few mouthfuls thinking our tastebuds were on the Fritz we swapped desserts! Much better and once I had the right one it was very yummy! The food is really good but the service lets it down The icing on the cake though was when asking for a baileys! My husband went to order me a baileys and when he came back he had 2 shot glasses of baileys as my drink? The reason being that it is 50ml shot and the shot glasses were only 25ml??? He didn’t question it as was a little bamboozled clearly they have not served baileys as a “drink” before so I went back to bar to ask for a glass with ice and subsequently poured my 2 shots into a glass to drink, sounds petty and on any other night it woukd have been funny but given the other issues it was just too much I would recommend this a nice friendly bar but for the food it is a self serve fancy Wetherspoons

Had a great time yesterday at this place. Very cosy atmosphere and decorated festively. We had a beef and cod sandwich with all the trimmings and a beer with the special offer of 9 quid. It was a decent sized portion and service was relatively sharp. Can recommend if you are in the area like.

Food was good, very overpriced for what we got, service and atmosphere were very nice and I always love a dog friendly pub

Had a lovely day at York Christmas market, then on to Lendle Cellers for food and drinks. This place has now become one of my favourite watering holes, just love it. Ps...it does great food and has a great atmosphere love it❤️

Visited for lunch while in York for the xmas market. Food was lovely as always, we had the chicken BLT and the fish goujon sandwich. Staff were helpful and friendly.

Customer service is shocking the food on limited or reduced menu for the gluten free why reduced menu what are we still in Covid times? Staff didnt have correct kitchen close times and was rude. The pigs in blankets must have been there all day maybe that’s why it was one of the 4 things offed from menu off a full menu of gf offerings would never return was hopeful after the previous reviews we had seen, iWill add was offered fresh however they should have been fresh to begin with.

I visited Lendal Cellars to see some bands playing, yesterday evening. I booked a table and was given a large table in the middle of the eating area, which was appreciated. Sometimes when solo your seated at a tiny table. The staff helpful and friendly even with the venue very busy, both at the bar and serving food. A great atmosphere with live bands. The bands were great, acoustics perfect and everyone still able to chat. The Lendall Cellars attracts friendly customers of all ages, and so a vibrant atmosphere. Great food and menu choices. Thank you for a great evening. Will definitely recommend to my friends. They missed a great night.

We booked for dinner as we were visiting the Christmas market and I knew we would want somewhere to sit down relax and have some food. It took a while to find as we are unfamiliar with York and I was looking for the Greene King symbol outside the doors. Once we were inside, we loved it. What a cosy little gem we had booked. Everyone commented how nice it was. It was very busy but we were served promptly and didn't have to wait too long for our food to arrive. All in all, it was a lovely experience.

How have we missed this place before? Impressive 'under ground' bar. Very atmospheric. We had a pie and chips and the tastiest flat iron steak I have ever eaten.! They also had two for one on Morretti beer! And it was live music Jam night. (Thursday). Which was an even bigger bonus. Loved it. Went back on Saturday lunch time and it was rammed. Couldnt get in. So dissapointed. Obviosly a popular place.

Heard great things about this pub and wow what a unique pub it is, located entirely underground with large vaulted ceilings decorated with strings of white lights. I came here for flat ciders, they had 3 on when I visited. Free Greenking Wifi is 40Mbps Down/20Mbps Up. Food is served Noon to 8pm, Dog friendly. Well worth a visit to see this unique pub, Will be back soon.

The food was good and reasonably priced. Staff not very on the ball..... Kinda hard to find but worth a visit just for the history. Originally a friary ( monks ) , then a giant wine cellar. Wouldn't recommend for anyone visually impaired as it's very dark inside.

What can I say... excellent Sunday lunch hot and Yorkshire puddings to die for. Sticky toffee pudding for afters was perfect

Experience was okay- the ambiance and history behind the place is very interesting. They were 2 of the key drivers on why I booked a reservation I was a bit taken back by the fact there was no host / hostess to greet me when I walked in, so I had to spend a few minutes flagging someone down to get a table Call me old, but Since you're in an enclosed space, with a lot of people, can get very loud, making it difficult to talk to the person next to you- Food and drink selection were good, no complaints there! Overall if visiting York again, id consider going again, just would hope it's not as packed as it was my first time visiting...to be fair I did go there on a Saturday night lol

Great find in york. The perfect pub with a ghostly history. Loved it.

Ate here for lunch as I'd seen the interior online and it looked interesting. The food was ok, service was ok, neither one of them special, but the interior was too warm and smelt slightly of toilets. Had the small plates, but everything was deep fried and I felt a bit "icky" all afternoon.

Enjoyed a lovely meal here, food was good- hot & freshly served- fish & steak pie both excellent. Beer on draught was also very good. Service was friendly & very efficient. Interesting & cosy venue - would definitely recommend.

Food is absolutely amazing. Had the Katsu burger and it totally blew my taste buds away,definitely one of the best burgers I have ever tried. Partner had a Sunday roast and this was also amazing. Finished with chocolate brownie and wow 👌. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Definitely advise to visit.

A great place in historic atmospheric vaults. The food is good if you’re just after some pub grub. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful.

Came here with a group of new uni friends, and it’s great! Cheap drinks, large tables that we could all sit round, decent food with loads of small plates to share and enjoy! The sticky chicken is amazing! We will be returning since the staff told us about some student deals starting up! The pub is such a unique venue and so cute with the fairy lights too. Staff were super friendly and helpful! Super useful when it came to telling us about student deals! Probably the first place I’ll bring my family when they visit!

£2 DRINKS PROMOTION - Emails received prior to visit. But on arrival NO DRINKS available on that promotion, just the full price selection. Was informed that they would be available the following day but surprise surprise, no promotional drinks available the following day either. Venues of the same chain further out of town were running the promotion and they were able to offer it all day every day.

Great friendly and helpful staff, we had a big booking of 10 people for food. They were kind enough to let us divide the bill by 10 and pay separately which I know is a bit of a pain!

This is a great bar, good selection of beers and swift service. Well worth a visit.

Looks amazing and well looked after but unfortunately Green King so minimal selection of beer and it's all rubbish Can't fault the staff and as said place is well maintened but in a pub you really want to drink something that isn't meh

Popped in here today for a drink before heading home from York. Love the setting/location! Very comfortable with a nice relaxed atmosphere. Love the story about it possibly being haunted too! Loved the choice of ciders (the Rhubarb cider was amazing) and the food looked really good. Especially the Sunday roasts. I would definitely return here on a future trip to York!

Lovely place to have a few drinks

Wonderfull stop for lunch found by chance with a courtyard to the back with live music. Had a great steak sandwich with three of the food bites at good price. Well worth stopping buy for somewhere to sit in the sunshine and enjoy some good food.

Although it’s a nice place myself and my family’s choice of food was awful we all had the chicken BLT 👎🏻 could not work out if the bread had been toasted or it was just stale. And as for what was in the sandwich I can only say if I put the whole filling in half a slice of bread it still wouldn’t have been full! Best thing was the fries! (Or the mayo) Avoid at all costs total rip off! We all wished we had gone to subway. Will definitely not return!

If ever you find yourself in the city of York and feel a bit peckish, you could do worse that head for the Lendale Cellars which is a hidden pub situated, not surprisingly in Lendale,York, YO1 8AA. Walk down the steps and a warm welcome awaits you. This really is a unique atmosphere. The friendly staff are very welcoming and also very efficient. Food and drink, of which there is a wide variety, is very reasonably priced. We tried the fish and chips and it was excellent. There are a range of cask ales on offer and wines and spirits for all tastes. Well worth a visit if you want a unique experience. And you never know, you might just catch sight of the ghostly monk! Top class venue which I can't praise enough.

Like this place when we visit york usually during the week or on a Sunday . Saturday night first time I’ve been it’s pretty quiet about a 1/4 full and no atmosphere on what is a payday Saturday night at 9:45-10pm . Could it be no noticeable music or the ale at £6.30 a pint is not really cold and a bit watery or just you’re too expensive for what you’re offering thee days. Wouldn’t go back on a Saturday night again

My wife & I spent a couple of hours in here last Saturday afternoon & really enjoyed it. We sat downstairs where you really get the feeling of being underground. Despite this the place is well lit & doesn't feel too dark (as some cellar bars can). We both ordered fish, chips & curry sauce. The food came out quite quickly & was very nice. Despite being a cellar bar there is also a beer garden. I will definitely return here next time I'm in York. The easiest way to find this place is to head for Miller & Carter. Go through the arch next to M&C & the entrance is on the right hand side.

Sunday roast was lovely, beef tender, massive Yorkshire, cauliflower cheese, cabbage, carrots and roast potatoes. Lots of gravy which was nice and thick not runny.

Visited the Lendal Cellars on Monday 15th July with the Mrs. The pub is quite tucked away and is very easy to miss, but if you look for it you won't be sorry. Firstly the building is awesome, super interesting and different. Being underground? Love it. The drinks selection was good, we got a pint of Level Head and a Mango Picante, tasty and good value. For food I had the Fish (cod) & Chips with Curry Sauce and my partner had a Cheese & Bacon Burger. Both of these were delicious and competitively priced for York if you aren't used to the prices here like us. The staff were very friendly and approachable, if we find ourselves in York in the future we will absolutely eat here again.

Quirky and atmospheric. We stopped here for a for a drink before a dinner reservation at Tomahawks. Great venue apart from the musty smell that we found we couldn’t ignore.

Me and my wife came in on Monday night! The overall ambience was lovely. The candles and small background noise of people enjoying there visit really takes your away from yorks busy streets. We decided to stay for food and we wasn’t disappointed. My wife has a bbq chicken and said it was once of the best she had. I went for a Chicken BLT and it didn’t disappoint! It wasn’t too hot or cold just perfect! We will definitely be back when we visit again. Thank you to the team on Monday you was very welcoming and attentive

Down quite a few steps to enter. Not wheelchair friendly. Bricked archway to the bar. Usual tap beers and a few real ales available. Staff were friendly and polite. Camra discount available on showing your card. Large flag stones on the floor. Food served and families welcome. Beer was good. Another room to the left as you walk in. Enjoyed my visit.

We popped in a Monday. The overall atmosphere of the pub was beautiful away from the Hustle and bustle of Yorks busy street. The candles lit and dimmed lighting and crowd noise really helped with the ambience. We opted for a BBQ chicken. It had to be one of the nicest versions of this dish I’ve had. It’s was piping hot when it hit the table and the taste of the chicken was lovely with the crispy onions adding a nice crunch. My husband said his chicken and bacon sandwich was the perfect temperature not too hot or cold. We will definitely be back when we visit York again

Spent 2 nights during our stay in York here. Great food, staff were very friendly, would definitely return if we visit York again.

Lovely pub in the cellars. It's nice and cosy and also has a nice little beer garden. Very reasonably priced. Didn't try the food so can't comment. I loved that they had Lillys cider on tap. Would recommend.

What a nice place to eat in. The bar staff were super friendly. The katsu burger my husband loved! The pulled pork croquettes were yum as well. Steak and ale pie was a bit fatty in the steak pieces, and mashed was not that hot. We would come again for sure.

Lovely pub, sadly Sunday lunch poor. Dried, curling and inedible beef, aunt Bessie equivalent roasties and what appeared to be cauili cheese that you buy frozen with sauce. Won't be returning for the food. On the upside, good atmosphere and friendly staff. Certainly no smell of damp as previous reviews have said.

Beer garden is a little down at heal and the tables, need a blooming good clean. However, the sun was shining, the company was good, the drinks were flowing. good times

Popped in today for a drink.no probs quite enjoyed it but please get a lock on the unisex toilets.no lock whatsoever don't know if it has just happened you can see were the lock was.very disturbing if a female is sat on the toilet and in walks a bloke

Absolute amazing place for a quiet drink in York especially at night fairy lights in a darkish room makes it very cosy. Defo recommend this to anyone in York.

A light lunch was called for as we had an evening dinner booked, walked in here and I must say the place smelled of damp Urg, we persevered and ordered two beers and decided to get some food as a fair few tables where taken so we thought the food can’t be bad. She had three cheese toastie and I had the steak pie mash and peas. I wish I’d gone for her lunch as Mine was yuk, the mash was so hard I’m sure it was smash tasteless until I put the gravy onto it, the pie was a massive pastry tower rock hard with very little filling. Unfortunately won’t be going back, I got a nice Giro in the food square when I came out of the place

The place looks like The Cavern Club Liverpool inside. The staff are nice and friendly. The food is excellent and the meals are reasonably priced.My spending included a meal and a drink.

Not lid friendly, more concerned about kids touching their precious chain curtains in the beer garden than they are cleaning broken glass.

My first visit was back in March 1988 and I've called in dozens of times since then. It's a fabulous pub and worth seeking out being what it says on the tin: stone arched cellars. For a Greene King pub it's unique. A reminder of the history that surrounds you!

Had a blast at Lendal Cellars in medieval York. The vibes are as authentic as it gets with those cool brick ceilings. Shoutout to Nick for the top-notch pints, and Kal and Beth for making us tourists feel like locals. This place is a must-visit! 🍻🏰

After our train being cancelled earlier on today, we came here to have a meal and a few drinks. What an amazing place, with amazing staff and food!!! Literally can’t thank Noemi, Kai and Ethan enough!!

Our puppy dragged us down the slope and we are so glad that he did. The food was lovely, not what you would expect from a chain pub. What set it apart though was the amazing, attentive and friendly service offered by Noemi and Tasha they are both a real credit to the pub and Greene King as a company. We have told so many friends etc how good our visit was and will be back again soon.

This pub in York is located on 2 floors, ground & a large cellar area, when we visited very busy. It is tucked away from the main drag, so you will need to look for it.

Called in for Sunday lunch, the service was good and food was nice, the lady who brought our food " niomi" was was really nice, polite and helpful.

Table reserved in the bottom section for a birthday celebration with family. It smelt damp & musty, the atmosphere was very humid. The seating was covered in white flakes that had fallen from the ceiling. We had to cover our drinks to stop them from being contaminated. My husband is asthmatic & within 15 minutes he had to go outside for fresh air as he was struggling to breathe. As we left, we could feel the change in the air between the different levels.

First time visitor to lendall cellars, will definitely be back.

We visited today for Sunday lunch. As a family of 3 with one fussy eater it's hard to find somewhere that caters for both so we booked knowing the main menu was on offer. When we arrived we were extremely impressed because as a reserved table we weren't just put in a corner. The staff were friendly and very welcoming. We ordered two Sunday dinners and scampi off the main menu. The food arrived and was very well presented and tasted amazing. My son who is a fussy eater cleared his plate and said how nice it was. We loved the decor and how beautiful it looked. We will definitely be back next time we are in York.

A good atmosphere in this unique Greene King pub. It's situated in a former cellar in central York. Pub food is as expected of a chain and there is a selection of good Greene King drinks.

Fantastic service, staff, food just perfect all thanks to the amazing Tasha! We were a party of 13, 8 adults and the rest of the group were young kids. Tasha went out of her way to set us up a table that was big enough for us all to sit together, the roast dinner and other food was awesome and it was the perfect end to my Mum's 80th Birthday celebrations! Thank you, Tasha and all the staff at Lendal Cellars for making it so memorable! 😊

Visited here last Saturday evening. Good atmosphere, nice bar staff, decent choice of drinks and a mixed aged clientele. We enjoyed the place and it’s well worth a visit.

Food arrived within 5mins of ordering, so obviously just microwaved and very expensive for what it was. Chilli tasted ok but my husbands chicken on some sort of bread from the lighter bite menu was virtually empty in between the slices. I wouldn’t recommend the place based on our experience. (There were only 3 couples in as well at the time so it wasn’t as if it was busy).

Lendal Cellars is a very popular bar, with a really great interior and lots of seating. The bar itself is a Greene King property, so the menu is standard for their pubs. We visited most recently on a Saturday evening, when understandably it was packed. Our drinks came quickly and were as ordered. The food order was fairly good, though the portions were not large- the steak in particular was amusingly sparse. The staff however were all good-natured and polite. If you want a lively pub full of folks having a good time with standard pub fare, you can't go too wrong with Lendal Cellars. If you want a quieter night, then you might need to visit on a week night.

It's so unexpectedly spacious in here. We had been let down by our intended lunch booking and found our way here. My burger was one of the best ever, hot and tasty and the fries were just right. There is a good choice of beers and other drinks and our dogs were welcome too, thanks
