Carlton Tavern in York

Went on recommendation through our Air b&b host and wasn't disappointed, had Sunday lunch which was buffet style but miles better than a Toby, would recommend and return, only downside I'm not from York

7 of us visited yesterday for Mothers Day, so it was pretty busy but well organised, carvery was excellent and great value! Would visit again.

We came for the Carvery. The food was well presented on the carvery and tasted delicious. Plenty of food! I liked that we weren’t in a big queue, that each table was served in turn, this was such an effective way to manage the tables. I suppose my only gripe was that we booked a table for 12 noon not realising that was when the doors opened so we were stood in the rain for 5-10 minutes until the doors were opened. We had my elderly mother with us so think maybe the doors could have been opened earlier to allow for the terrible weather. However once inside we felt welcomed and comfortable. We will definitely come again but will check doors opening time first!!

Bar staff have great banter. Foods amazing. Best beer garden in York, was told euros will be shown again. I will be back Monday.

We decided on the Carlton as the place we normally go to was doing an event.. it was a great choice the pub had a lovely friendly atmosphere the staff and service was excellent and the food was amazing aswell. It will definitely be my local going forward and it definitely going to be our choice when we do our friends afternoon get togethers Infact we already booked the abba bingo before we left. We was all very impressed and extremely happy with our visit

Lovely settings very relaxed and good service

We travel to York quite often to see family, about 6 times a year and usually eat at the Weatherby Whaler and have done so for about 10 years , but as this is closed we had to find another venue, the Carlton was a result of a random Google search and was 'pot luck' thankfully it was a delightful experience , the staff were pleasant and well-presented and helpful, we will definitely be going back the food was really nice , thank you see you again soon !

We came out for a family meal. There was 20 of us in total, the staff were great. So organised, no waiting around and the carvery was delicious! We all said how much we enjoyed it and have now found a new location for our family get together! Very thankful for them to reserve us a table at quite last min too during the school holidays. Lots of other places turn their nose up at the size of our party!

Excellent service, food lovely and hot, staff friendly

Just had Sunday carvery lunch, great choice of meats, veg and gorgeous Yorkshire puds and roasties. It was a family meal for 18 of us. Staff were very helpful, accommodating and welcoming. Definitely will go again.

Called in for food and drink with my wife. 5 minutes until kitchen close. Ordered 2 sirloin steaks. They were cooked spot on and generous portions of chips etc. Great atmosphere, quiz night. Staff were very friendly and enjoyed our overnight stay in the Lodge

Our visit was lovely.We sat in a quiet area away from the TV's and football! The food was delicious 😋 and the service was fantastic! No complaints at all.A lovely young lady called Sophie (I think) was very happy and couldn't do enough for us.It was lively to get service with a smile.We will definitely be visiting again.

Lived in York 22 years but it's the first time I've been. To The Carlton Tavern. Will definitely be going back. Lovely warm welcome, great staff and great food.

Was in for the Sunday carvery very nice meal and great service with me having mobility issues they helped me with plating up and also carried my plate over to our table as I am on walking sticks so would struggle to carry my plate great service and will be back.

Although your information says that the place is open until 11, pm we found at Y.40 pm that they did not serve food, There was no mention of this in the external advertising

We tried to book to have our Christmas Day lunch here, but at the time they were fully booked. However, a table became available and we are so grateful..... The whole thing was a lovely experience. Everything seemed to flow so easily, from the short time waiting at the bar to the excellent time between courses. The food was excellent : very tasty, very hot and more than enough of it. All the staff were extremely pleasant, the table cleared quickly between courses, nothing too much trouble. Not too often we eat out on Christmas Day but we would certainly do it again here!

Fab festive xmas dinner again, nothing too much trouble for an allergy riddled family, great food and service will be booking again for next year. Thanks to Linford, Rich and team for a great day

Had a lovely meal with friends , lady working behind the bar was really nice and friendly Food was good apart from cold broccoli, but when we pointed this out, lady serving us could not apologise enough and offered to redo the meal, but as the rest was hot and good we all declined , and we were then offered complimentary teas and coffees , so all was handled very satisfactory..

I booked a table for 10 and asked for the comfy seating at the back as I needed disabled access (toilet and no steps) When we arrived there was already a large group of people in that area and the bar staff seemed unaware of the booking and went into off us the conservatory which was totally inadequate. It took a long while for the food to arrive but everyone seemed to enjoy it and the plates were empty. Please, please check for bookings as if this happens again, we will not be coming back.

Me & my wife started an 9 day holiday in York , then onto the Whitby Goth Weekend 2023. Our campervan unfortunately broke down on the first day 😞. We had booked the Carlton Lodge & phoned to ask if could arrive early to store our luggage. "Yes not a problem 👌 " We arrived to check in at the Pub. From that second we was treated brilliantly. The land lady (I assume) was exceptional, polite , professional & charming. The customers really do come first. Our lunchtime meal was fantastic & great value for money. The Carlton Lodge was a great stay over. Clean & tidy & a fabulous bed. Definitely coming back next year. Well done to the whole team at Carlton Tavern York and the Carlton Lodge. Mike & Marie

Me and 7 family member had a meal. All meals were served at same time and everyone enjoyed their meal. We have been twice for a meal last time there were 12 of us. Would certainly go for another meal.

Rather disappointing. Had booked birthday meal for 6.45 online. Rather slow producing meal for the 5 of us and when we finished around 8pm we asked for the pudding menu, only to be told that kitchen had closed at 7 30!

I was at a funeral. The buffet was very mixed, so should suit all tastes.

Excellent pub for food and drink. Staff are very friendly and the landlord has a great personality. Friday night is quiz night and so much fun. I highly recommend The Carlton Tavern for drinks, food and even an overnight stay! The Lodge offers 3 en-suite rooms.

We were a table of 10 and the patrons and staff were fantastic, putting up with our "chatting". Family get together after a few years apart. We stayed in the lodge behind the hotel for 2 nights. What a hidden gem. Huge room - great bath - very hot water and a fabulous comfortable bed. The food in the Tavern is delicious. Pity only NZ Sav Blanc though😢. Well done to everyone. We'll certainly be back👏👏👏

Went for tea before the weekly Friday quiz. Friendly service, good quality food and great value. Plenty of choice for drinks. Quiz was relaxed and not too serious, host was a right laugh.

Went today for a Sunday carvery, we got there for 14.00 but didn't realise they finished serving the carvery & didn't have any other food on. Last time we came they served food all day & into the evening, I checked the website but it didn't have any details in the menus or on the website about the carvery times. Shame! They lost customers as we had one drink & went elsewhere & thoroughly enjoyed our alternative! Update your website to let people know what you are serving & when!

Great food, and friendly service. I had the gammon which was tasty and came with pineapple and egg. My husband had a pie and my son a burger. The menu offered good choices at reasonable prices. Would definitely recommend.

The food at the carlton is superb more then the usual pub type of pub grub excellent and fast service no waiting around to eat..the staff or all very helpful and friendly..would definitely recommend 10/10

Lovely building Decision demanded on food selection within 5 mins of arrival,despite the table being booked. Lots of items on the menu were not available.

13 of us arrived for opening time to kick start a hen party with a meal to line our stomachs. I had prebooked, but as it was opening time, we had some free choice where to sit & combined some tables in the conservatory area. We had already looked up the menu ahead of arrival, so weren't waiting too long for ordering & receiving food. We were all pleased with portions & choices. Service was great. It was a lovely start to our day & location for us to then walk to our activity destination afterwards. Thank you!

Love coming to the Carlton staff are very helpful and friendly, have ordered food a few times now and can not fault it very nice

Went for Sunday Carvery left it late and they had 2 large groups in so sold out of meat however the staff went above and beyond cooking us Lamb Shanks instead. So kind rather than turn us away. Really appreciated and we will definitely return....

We were really pleasantly surprised but this pub , reasonably priced food and drinks and great service but the food ……. For pub grub it’s absolutely delicious!! I wasn’t even expecting to enjoy it let alone go again, highly recommended

A small group of us choose the Carlton to celebrate a colleague’s retirement, lots of space, many drinks to choose from, service fantastic- even though there was about 15 of us. The food is phenomenal and plenty to choose from- this will be my summer hang out! Thank you so much

Amazing Sunday roast carvery in York. Very good price, for around £13 you get a good selection of meats and delicious sides (which you can refill as much as you please). We have yet to find a better value for money and quality in the city.

Was with a walking group so visited Bunker and windmill having lunch in between. Large car park, tasty food lots of seating, good service

My friend and myself often visit here on a lunch time and l have to admit the staff have not always been welcoming BUT on Thursday this week despite being very busy with a large party in for lunch they were great The food has always been good, and taking into account how busy they were it was served quickly

We were able to get a table on a busy Friday night and had dinner. The food was outstanding and portion size was very generous. The bar staff and manager were extremely helpful and efficient. Will be visiting again when down in York.

Was a bank holiday Monday and we had dragged the children around York shopping. I was visiting some family friends so wasn't local to the area. We rang and rang places and no one was doing food until my friend found this lovely pub. We rang and we had about 40 minutes to get food in! Service was great throughout, the staff were friendly, the food was lovely and the kids were happy on the play area... after asking for a park all day! 10 out of 10, couldn't have asked for anymore. Would definitely recommend to anyone. Thank you!

Lovely staff and several vegan options. Currently no cask ale but probably only tempoary. Large venue so felt comfortable. Good outdoor space. We also stayed in the 'lodge'on site and this was excellent!

Popped in a couple of times whilst staying locally, first visit just for drinks which were excellent and priced very reasonably. The second visit we had the carvery which we all thought was excellent quality. All round a great local pub!
