I work down the road on Royal College Street and finally tried Lemongrass, which I now learn is the only Cambodian restaurant in London. I had an amazing chicken curry, which was a bit of an adventure in spices - was closer to a Massaman curry than a Green Curry, but I given I don't know Cambodian food I suppose that's not surprising! I enjoyed it very much. Friendly waitress (she was very attentive) and the Chef/Owner was too. Highly recommended! Thinking of doing company Christmas Party there.

Unique and delicious tastes that you will never forget. I dined here a couple of weeks ago with my partner, and I still can't get the taste of the beef fillet lokluk out of my mind. It was rich, tender and peppery, and genuinely the tastiest beef dish I have ever eaten. I will be back for more, next time I am in the area (or even out the area!) We also tried the seafood soup, which was outstanding. It was lightly sweet, sour and perfectly spiced, and was big enough for 2, although I would have happily finished it by myself. We also tried the papaya salad, and the lemon mushrooms. Both were delicious, and I highly recommend you try both as well. The drinks are cheaper than the local pubs as well. 10/10, 5 stars, and all the superlatives. Just brilliant.

I had seen this restaurant online after returning from a trip to Cambodia and discovering the fantastic food there. I was determined to eat here the next time we were in London and we were so glad we did! The place is so charming and exactly like the family run restaurants found all over Asia. The four of us tried quite a few of the items on the menu, which isn’t huge but all very good. The service was very friendly and we were absolutely delighted with everything we ordered. Cambodian food seems to contain very similar ingredients to Thai food but is completely different and equally delicious. The prices are very reasonable and the food is of a very high standard. We all left feeling like we had been on a mini holiday to the Far East! This restaurant is a little off the beaten track but well worth the journey!

A disappointing meal can be acceptable if the price is low, but this restaurant isn't cheap and the food was poor. The best dish was the lok luk steak, but the classic fish curry seemed curdled, heavy on the cornflower and the fish itself a pretty grey species. Overall, the menu lacked much that seemed genuinely Cambodian, and was more of a generic mix of south east Asian meals available anywhere. The starter platter of prawn snacks, spring rolls etc might just as well have come from Lidl's freezer compartment. And, sadly, the restaurant is garishly lit, which only adds to the greasy cafe feeling. I'd loved to have been more positive about a novel restaurant but just cannot work up any enthusiasm for this joint.

I took my partner here as a surprise for his birthday recently. A few years ago we travelled across Cambodia and enjoyed so much of the food we’d had there, so it was lovely to find a restaurant serving Cambodian dishes. When we arrived Marilynn explained to us that Thomas was the only chef so waits could take slightly longer, but it meant that all the food was deliciously fresh. We were spoiled for choice and so chose the Set Menu because we couldn’t decide! Everything that came out was so tasty, especially our Lok Luk and Asparagus mains. Marilynn also took some time to sit down with us and explain how they’d started their restaurant up over 30 years ago, and how Thomas’ cuisine was a contemporary take on traditional dishes he had grown up with. To finish Marilynn gave us some Thai Banana Cakes- which my partner wolfed down! We loved visiting this restaurant, it was a charming evening, and we felt so welcomed- I’ll definitely be coming here again as there’s so much more on the menu I’d love to try! Thanks Thomas and Marilynn!

Consigliatissimo

This is a cute little restaurant with very limited space. The food was good and full of flavour and spices (and yes, plenty of lemongrass!). The servings were a little small, but for the price and location, it was proportionate. If you are a big eater though, order more! Some of the items on the menu are generic pan-asian. The spring rolls and grass jelly for example are bog standard chinese takeaway fare. But dishes which were authentic more than made up for it. Just be aware and practice buyer beware when ordering!

A group of us had a very disappointing meal here. The service was very slow resulting in is staying 3 hours. The service seemed a bit ingenuous and wasn't welcoming. Only a few of the dishes are truly Cambodian so I agree with comments that this is more pan Asian. The wait for the food was slow and when it arrived mine was quite cold. I asked for a drink a couple of times but only got it on the third attempt. The interior was basic and suited more to a quick dining experience of fast food rather. The food is expensive too for the size portion you receive and charging £7 for a small basic veg dish is too much. I wouldn't recommend.

My partner and I visited lemongrass at the weekend after watching Rick Stein in Cambodia he was cooking a fish amok! My partner searched online for Cambodian restaurants and we found lemongrass, the only Cambodian in London. We drove a round trip of 5 hours as we had to drop children off and grandparents and let me tell you it was so worth the journey! The hosts Marlyn and Thomas were lovely, Marlyn explained there would be a bit of a wait as Thomas is the only chef and everything is cooked fresh to order. We honestly didn’t mind waiting even tho we were starving as we knew it would be good! We ordered the duck for starters which was lovely, then for mains the fish amok and Luk luk steak, mango salad and a prawn dish. It was absolutely delicious, they also gave us the banana dessert on the house once they realised how far we had travelled , I thought this was a really nice touch and again it was just delicious. I myself have visited Cambodia and its very authentic cuisine. My partner won’t stop talking about it (he’s a massive foodie) and We will definitely be back along with friends. I strongly recommend visiting! The lovely couple runs this place for 31 years, since 1988 they are serving amazing, natural, authentic Cambodian flavours, based on fresh ingredients. Cosy interior may seem too modest, and ok, the service is not as fast as McDonald's, but hey! Tastewise they win the 5* : superb execution, textures, spice balance, and the super welcoming hosts. Perfect. I love the Cambodian soup, hot and sour, genuinely heartwarming. Steak is one of the best in London. I'm shocked they are not famous. Worth a detour, Go there now, not sure how much longer they will keep it up.

Petit restaurant ouvert depuis 30 ans. It wasn't easy to find a restaurant in this locality on a Wednesday night that wasn't either empty or rather desperate looking. However if you find yourself in the nearby Holiday Inn Express and want something different to their brightly lit, homogenous and soulless canteen you may want to give this place a try. It's off the main road so isn't obvious to find and the steamy windows weren't that inviting but it at least had people in. And in contrast to the Holiday Inn Express, people who as far as I could tell through the steamed glass appeared to be enjoying themselves. The service was very friendly and attentive and the food was well cooked. I went for traditional Chinese fare from a fairly eclectic menu including Malaysian and Thai as well as Chinese. It was very nice and also good value. If you're in Watford on a Wednesday night in November my general advice would be to leave at the first opportunity but if you need to stick around to eat you'll find a welcome and some respite here

We have visited Cambodia on several occasions and found that the food in Lemongrass quite different to anything we experienced in that country. Yes the situation and ambience of the restuarant is quiet, the staff very pleasant but having said that the restuarant has little to commend itself. The food was OK but very ordinary and for what we ordered was relatively expensive, even by London prices. To make matters worse they then added a further 10% to the bill as we were a party of 6! In general we were disappointed with Lemongrass and I am given to believe that my son and daughter in law (Cambodian national) and who live in Camden will not be returning.

We are very lucky to have dined in what I believe via the internet the only two Cambodian Restaurants in the UK. What a delight to have been to the London Lemongrass. Their meals are prepared to the 70's - 80's style of food available in Cambodia as I was told by the head chef. If you imagine, Thai food, only lighter and more delicate that will be what you get. Unfortunately we did not have my preferred, before writing a review, to eat there more than once, option as we live very close to the other Cambodian Restaurant, in Cheshire. Both share interesting feature as they both are small, intimate, and very friendly eateries. My wife and I decided to go as we have booked a tour to Cambodia we will certainly be looking forward to our experience if this is the standard of food to be expected. The Lok Lac is a classic dish made from finest fillet, Royal Amok fish dish is exceptional. The spices and balance is really to my taste, the wine list is short but I personally would find it hard to say which wine goes where. On the whole it was for us a very pleasant experience with good service. I personally enjoyed having a chat with the owner and his son over the counter as I was paying my bill. Would love to go again found the atmosphere very friendly and no problems with anything.

This was one of the best meals I ever had. I went to Cambodia and loved the food there, so I was desperate to get a good Cambodian meal. If you like fancy restaurants with nice decor, this is not for you. But the food is delicious!! The service was friendly. We tried several starters, and of course had the Lok Beef and the Amok fish for main. Absolutely delicious!! We went at 6pm, and were the first guests. It was raining, and we came in wet, so they put little heaters. I love the fact that the menu is small - better less dishes but all of them good. We loved the place, and loved the fact that there was nothing fancy about it - just freshly made, great great food!

I went on Good Friday with a group of people to enjoy Cambodian food here. I was very impressed with the food and the quick service. Each dish is cooked individually and I loved the delicious flavours. I would highly recommend this family run restaurant to anyone open to trying new dishes.

This is a small café style restaurant around the corner from Camden Overground. They have three members of staff including the solitary chef who is the co owner, who cooks fresh food from scratch. This place doesn't get much passing trade and I got the impression that they have a regular clientele. Whilst this is a positive, it can also mean that new customers don't get the attention or are taken granted for, which is certainly what I felt.I ate just after it opened, and in spite of it being empty I was asked to sit in the corner next to the window where there was a cold breeze. I asked to sit at another table and was directed towards another table in the corner which had not been prepared. I was told that the other tables were all booked, even though I said I would be in and out within 30 minutes. I found the other co-owner who deals with front of house to be a little direct.I asked the waitress for advice on what to eat and chose the spring chilli chicken with steamed rice. What I hadn't been told was that this was a very dry dish and wouldn't go well with rice. And, whilst the dish was full of fabulous favours, the chicken was lukewarm; disappointing!

I was excited about coming to this Cambodian restaurant with some friends. The first thing that struck me was the basic décor and a slightly odd smell. The waitress was very cold and so was the restaurant. Even though the restaurant was half empty I felt as if we were an inconvenience. I’m fairly sure the only time the waitress managed to smile was when we paid at the end. The other thing that bothered me was how the cutlery, glasses and plates all looked a bit grubby. I wouldn’t say the menu is particularly Cambodian. We had the mixed starters which I would say were more Chinese. The starters were perfectly nice, but we did wait what seemed a very long time for them. The mains came out slowly (I think there is only one or two chefs.) One person’s main course was forgotten. No apology or explanation was offered when this was eventually provided. I had a prawn dish. It was tasty and freshly cooked and so were our sides. The fish amok (the most Cambodian thing on the menu) looked like it was probably microwaved and the curry sauce had separated. We concluded it was best to skip pudding.

Visited on a rainy saturday night with a group of 8 friends for a birthday celebration. There was a warm welcome although the restaurant was quite cold. The decor is very old-fashioned. The food was tasty and quite good portions. Not the cheapest restaurant in the area about £30 per head with booze. The main criticism is that we were all drinking beer and they ran out by 8.30. The bar is very limited so we either moved on to wine or water. It is a very small restaurant and one chef cooking so not everyone got served at the same time. Some dishes/side dishes arrived 30-40 minutes after the first person had been served. The menu is quite restricted and the side dishes are quite expensive £6-7 for braised cabbage/asparagus. Overall a pleasant experience but I won't be rushing back.

I wish I were going to be in London long enough to try every dish on this menu. The dishes are made with fresh ingredients, and cooked perfectly. I am not familiar with Cambodian cuisine so I'm not saying it's 'authentic' but the flavors and approach of the dishes were unusual--sharing elements with other SE Asian cooking but interesting and different. I visited the website afterwards and it's very interesting to learn the story of the owners. I highly recommend a visit; the place seemed ordinary when we sat down but once the food arrived it seemed quite extraordinary! We had a starter, the Spicy King Prawns, and the asparagus--all great choices, and just the right amount of food for two people who are moderate eaters. Cost, 25 pounds. Having alcohol would put the price up, of course. The server was quiet and efficient. Highly recommended. -- But do make sure you get to the little place on Royal College in Camden, not the other one with a similar name!

OMG. I was taken to this restaurant by a friend who used to work there. She raved about the amazing food. I was absolutely delighted when our chosen starter of Crispy Duck arrived at the table - the presentation was stunning and I just had to take a pic! Note the pancakes were beautifully rolled & placed on the side of the presentation platter. I had never seen such a lovely display as this before in any other restaurant. The duck was moist & tender and oh so crispy. My friend said I had to try the Loc Luc steak & the asparagus, & so I did. The steak pieces were unbelievably tender & cooked in an extremely delicious sauce. The asparagus was truly wonderful - crunchy & doused with garlic & butter & had a lemon peppery flavour. I didn't think I would have room for a dessert but was urged to try the banana cake by Maria, the waitress serving us. The banana cake, as they call it, came nestled in a banana leaf & smothered in coconut cream. Maria said it was to die for! and Wow! I loved it. . . I shall return!

My partner and I have eaten in this little restaurant several times and have never been disappointed. Don't be put off by the plain/basic decor. Everything is cooked fresh, no pre made heavy sauces. All fresh and tasty. Would recommend the Luc Luc steak. Absolutely delicious melt in your mouth peppery steak also the Indonisian prawns are very good. The most surprising thing on the menu is the asparagus. Get a portion and you will be raving about it for weeks. When we have taken our friends to eat here we have ordered a portion and everyone has loved it. You could eat them on their own they are so good. Please give this restaurant a try. There are not many privately owned restaurants around anymore as the big chains are opening up all over the place. It would be sad to see individual little places like this disappear, especially when the are offering something a bit different which is also very good.

After spending a month in Cambodia last year we were desperate to taste our favourite dish - Fish Amok - once again. We live in Scotland so we don't have Cambodian restaurants around the corner so we took the opportunity on a trip to London. We presumed that due to London/England's diverse cultures that you could buy galangal, finger root and kaffir leaves on the streets, but we're guessing not. Alas this was not authentic Fish Amok that we craved at all, it was more an indian curried fish dish, there was certainly no coconut cream in there. The fish itself however was cooked to perfection and it was tasty, it just wasn't Khmer. We laughed at the mango salad, instead of green raw mango shreds in a vegetable salad we were given fresh sweet mango with onion, oh dear, clearly no raw mangoes available in London either! We took two friends with us who enjoyed it so perhaps if you don't know what you are missing then it is fab! As other reviewers have stated the lady who serves in the restaurant is not what you would describe as a 'people person'. The only beer available was Tiger, which is great, however Angkor, Cambodia or even BeerLao or Klang would've been more authentic. However it was fine value for a London restaurant and it was tasty food, just not authentic. We shall await another return to London when an authentic Cambodian restaurant pops up!

We have been looking to an Khmer / Cambodian Restaurant in london, as it is difficult to get typical Khmer kitchen in my area. The dishes we had chosen were good and delicious but Khmer Lok Lak was not particularly Cambodian. (maybe another recipe?) And I missed Papaya Salads and Morning Glory, which was my favourite dish in Cambodia. Service was nice and friendly. Overall nice and delicious restaurant with fair prices, but not really authentic Cambodian food as I know it.

A group of us went there expecting authentic Cambodian food. Some of the dishes were quite nice (like the soups for example) but the rest didn't seem particularly Cambodian. Deep fried prawns and the other starters were nice but not particularly inspiring.Service was a bit hit and miss (e.g. forgetting cutlery and giving one small bowl of non authentic rice crackers between 8 of us).Wouldn't rush back!

We went with our Cambodian colleague and were thoroughly disappointed. The main course was almost 9 pounds and we got food that was only amount that fit on a side plate. The food was very basic and nothing like the amazing food in Cambodia. Complete disservice to the real Cambodian food. The quality was poor too. Seriously over priced for a dingy interior too.

We wanted to repeat our past experiences of cambodian cuisine and were surprised by this little place, the available choices and the taste of food. The restaurant is not far (5min walk) from the tube station. It's quite small, about 25 places, and very quiet. The kitchen is visible at the far end of the main (and only) room. We had some problem for reservation, had to try for about 3 hours before anyone answered the call, but after this they were very kind and accepted a reservation only 1 day in advance and at late evening with no problem. We suggest calling in the evening, too. There were 6 of us, with one kid and one teen (plus other 8-10 customers and 1 take-away) and we ordered not less than 20 different dishes among appetizers, main course and dessert. The cook, who we think is also the owner, was a wizzard: he worked very hardly alone, but managed to prepare all the different dishes in very short time (almost no waiting between deliveries of new dishes), also for the other customers. We tasted (among the others): Cambodian soup (with shrimps, coriander and pineapple, slightly hot, very tasty), mixed appetizers Treats Galore B (really great! 5 different types, with sauces for dip, mini-spring rolls, mushrooms etc.), spicy pineapple chicken, buddhist cabbage, Lok Luk fillet steak, banana fritters... The flavours are in no way hot but are quite spicy, suitable for western tastes, with contrasts between salted and sweets that continuously surpise the eater. The portions are not big, so 2 dishes+rice is probably too few: better to order the complete meal (appet. to dessert) or to try 2 appetizers. The tastes were very good, they reminded us the tastes and flavours of our tavel to Phnom Penh: our expectations were satisfied and those among us who did not know the Cambodian cuisine were pleased. At the end of the meal we also had the opportunity to meet the cook, who presented himself and asked our feedback (very first time this happens to me!)The only con of this experience was the lack of any Cambodian beer (only Singaporean brewed Tiger was available), but we can live with this ;-)We cannot guarantee the food is 100% Cambodian, probably some shades of other asian cuisines exist, nonetheless we absolutely recommend this place for an unusual asian cuisine experience!

Having enjoyed Cambodian cuisine immensely on a holiday there last year, we scoured the web for a UK-based Cambodian restaurant and came up with Lemongrass. Although it now trades as a 'Pan-Asian' restaurant, there is still a strong Cambodian flavour and plenty of choice. The decor and location looked a little unpromising but were more than compensated for by the excellent food and quick, friendly service. The food was fresh, tasty and plentiful. We enjoyed the garlic lemon mushrooms and traditional soups (hot and sour with fish and prawns) to start, followed by the gorgeous Spicy Pineapple Chicken and the Fish Amok. The ginger rice and Buddhist cabbage were perfect accompaniments. The desserts were also fresh and delicious, especially the sticky rice and banana cake. Highly recommended.

I was a bit dubious at first seeing Time Out stickers on the window dating back to 1997 and it being an empty restaurant on a Saturday night didn't bode well either. Being empty we had a good chance to look around and the decor and atmosphere aren't exactly inviting either. We gave each other some hesitant looks.Such apprehensions were quickly dispelled with the starters arrived. The satay was succulent, the spring rolls were crispy but light, the mushrooms were fragrant, even the prawns (which I'm not normally a fan of) were gorgeous and fresh. We looked at each other and went: whoa. The mains didn't quite live up to the promise of the starters but it was good to see them freshly cooked in the tiny kitchen and arriving piping hot straight from the pan. My beef was easily the best choice: tender beef in a lovely pepper sauce. I've no idea if this is an authentic Cambodian dish or an invented westernised one but I didn't care, it was gorgeous.Starters, mains and drinks for a meagre £20 a head rounded off a very pleasant experience. All those Time Out awards can't all be wrong.

The restaurant is quite small and simple and we were really expecting great food as we are going to Cambodia next year and it is the only Cambodian restaurant we could find in London. We were a group of eight. I arrived about ten minutes after the others and I found both waitresses cold and unwelcoming straight away when I walked in. My friends already ordered platters of starters to share and when we asked three times when they would arrived on the table, the main answer we received was "yes". So apart from being quite cold, the language barrier did not help to have a good experience. The service would not have been such a problem if the food had been good. When the starters came, we had eight different starters to share. Six of them were "finger food" from a supermarket (little samoussas, little spring rolls, chicken satay, fried prawns) clearly not homemade. The two remaining ones were a "leek fritter" which I did not like either and mushrooms cooked in black pepper and ginger. The main dishes were a bit better but had nothing really special. I had Indochine prawns, which were about eight king prawns pan fried with ginger and spring onions. The other type of prawn dish available was just a bit more spicy. At our table some friends also had two different sorts of beef dishes and one chicken dish, again there was nothing special about them. The chef talked to us directly from the kitchen and he seemed to be a very nice person. When I look at the other review on Tripadvisor, I wonder if the restaurant did not have to cut corners recently because our experience had nothing to do with some of the great comments I could read there from last year.I really cannot recommend to go there.

Small cafe with large outdoor seating serving great malaysian food - we went for lunch, they had beef rendang and chicken ayam as well as three vegetable dishes. The serving size of the chicken was large! I had the bandung which was also perfect and just as I remember. They also had teh tarik and milo.
