After leaving it for far too long we returned to our favourite restaurant in the UK last week. I've written before how good it is and I'm about to do so again. Living in Birmingham we have a choice of Michelin starred restaurants on our doorstep, now sadly one one less with the closure of Purnell's, but it's a scenic round trip to a Cheltenham restaurant that tops them all. Obviously the level of cooking at these places is top notch but the overall experience of LCS is what sets it apart. There is no tasting menu but set lunch and dinner menus (two or three course) - which offer incredible value - as well as an extensive a la carte menu. The wine list is extremely well put together and has a pricing range which suits all pockets, unlike some of its contemporaries! Some reviewers bemoan the lack of music; others compare it to a library or church but not in a good way. We find it has a calm and pleasant ambience. The tables are well spaced and people are chatting and laughing quite freely - possibly helped by mobile phone use not being allowed in the dining area. We had the set lunch menu which allowed us to taste gurnard for the first time as well as an exquisitely cooked beef and ox-tongue dish which melted in the mouth. The cheese board is - as it always has been - a masterpiece, arriving in a wicker basket full of cheese for you to choose at the table; or let chef David select for you allowing for personal preferences to be included. The coffee and petits fours are a sublime way to finish your meal. The latter are particularly fine, varied and plentiful. I haven't mentioned the nibbles, amuse bouche or the breads including a signature brioche with bacon but they, and the excellent front of house service provided by Helen and her team, all combine to consistently deliver a superb dining experience. Parking is available at a nearby car park, currently £2.30 for three hours - a time span which is perfect for a leisurely lunch - only a short walk away. We won't leave it so long for our next visit!

Excellent food service and nice amuse Boucher. Bread is excellent and the cheese board very impressive. Wines were good and the value for the standard of food excellent - wondered why I haven’t been here before!

Excellent food, wine and service. For a Michelin star restaurant, the Savage Mushroom, as we locals call it, is excellent value. A two course meal of this standard for under £50 is a bargain - but then it isn’t really a two course meal. There was a pre-pre starter and a pre-starter! Then excellent bread. Then after our meal there was a pre-dessert! And after the actual dessert - if you still have room - the coffee and petite-fours (miniature puds) are another bargain at £4.95. I won’t go into Instagrammy detail about the different dishes except to say that you can pay the same amount in a chain like the Ivy or Cote for a bog-standard scoff , or visit the CS for a meal you’ll long remember.

Once again we are so impressed with the quality of the ingredients and the skilful cooking in Le Champignon Savage. Each plate looks like a work of art to be appreciated as such. We treated ourselves on our 50th wedding anniversary and it was amazing. Thanks.

Exceptional and Fine Restaurant- all our dishes had distinct flavours and so much care in preparation. Also I felt truly relax as no loud music like in most restaurants. You truly can taste the Micheline high standards. Lovely costumer service and very knowledgeable. If I could would give more stars.

This was my second visit and Lynda's third. This is such an amazing find for a small venue. Run by a husband and wife (I believe) and exceptional food and service. Very surprisingly a Saturday afternoon was very quiet but the food was so so so good. One of the best meals we've had for quite some time, and it was up there with the best 3*. We realise that the star system has very many facets but as far as the food is concerned, Chef, take a bow. We shall be back in due course and look forward to the pleasant exchanges with staff as well as great food

I wanted to book an evening table but none were available. However they managed to give us a table at lunchtime. Wonderful. The flavours of every dish were mind-blowing. I suspect that every dish was classically French based. Is it expensive, sort of. Is it worth paying the money? Absolutely. Exceptional food never comes cheap. Do yourself a favour and awaken your taste buds with a visit here. It's an experience.

One word, incredible. This is comfortably the best dining experience I have had recently, the service was attentive and friendly from start to finish, and the food was delicious in every bite, the wine list was varied and interesting, and the explanations given for each dish had you enjoying the food before you even ate it. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough if you are here for a special occasion.

4 stars because the food preparation technique was excellent. But, based on this experience, I'm 50/50 as to if I would try again if passing by. This is just my personal option, and obviously based on my palate, but I found both of my dishes to be overly rich. My dishes would have also benefitted from some brighter/lighter colored ingredients, in terms of presentation. Service from the older lady was perfect, professional with the right balance of friendliness, but I found the younger server to be extremely cold, almost aloof ! The lunch special pricing is more than reasonable for the overall dining experience. I did have an early lunch appointment and with only two other tables occupied, it really did feel 'dead'. Once some other tables were occupied, the atmosphere improved.

This is an extremely good restaurant and in fact very good value for the quality of the food. The wine list is very good value and the better wine is in fact exceptional value - some bottles would be 3x the price in London. The ambience is a little austere but there is excellent art and flowers on the table. Two hours for dinner flew by and I would strongly recommend it.

The food is without doubt up there with the greatest - David has been cooking at these premises for many years and sure knows his stuff and so does his wife Helen who runs front of house with truly great skill. Last night four of us all enjoyed every morsel that we ate. Stunning canapés and amuse bouche followed by excellent starters - the Scallops and pheasant were a joy. Main courses were also fantastic - my Belly pork being joyous to eat. The Cheese platter is something else and Helen knows every one of the probably 30 or so cheeses on the board and their details. I let her choose my cheeses and my oh my they were delightful. Thank you all for a lovely evening we all enjoyed it immensely

Really great food and service, however I just can't give this restaurant 5 stars given the whole experience was dampened by the awkward atmosphere. Each course was delicious, the cheese board especially was a great experience being given the option of so many to choose from, and they were all very tasty, with smaller plates served between courses. The wine selection was extensive and the one we chose was lovely. The service was also great, struck the right balance of attentive, very polite and friendly but not in your face. The restaurant itself, is quite dated; however we could definitely overlook this, if it wasn't for the fact that it felt like a stuffy library. There is no music at all, and it made us feel like we had to whisper as we could hear every word from the few other tables. Unfortunately the food wasn't incredible enough to overcome the awkward feeling. I've had much better experiences at other restaurants (including those without a Michelin star!), so in all honesty we wouldn't return.

We went for dinner on a Saturday night. There is absolutely no atmosphere as other reviewers describe. People speak in hushed whispers and there is no music. The decor is dated. Our starters had a hair in it and unfourtunately due to the inattentive staff this wasn't rectified until others at the table had finished their starter - a restaurant charging £40 a plate should do better. The scallops were a particular lowpoint, exceptionally bland. The reaction of the staff to us letting them know there was a hair in the food was unpleasant and rude. No apology offered, the plate was snatched away without a word. We left after this. Staff were fairly professional about handling our decision to leave and did not charge for the starter with a hair in it. Choose somewhere else, you will get much more for your money and a far more pleasant environment at other local Michelin starred restaurants.

I have high expectations of this restaurant due to awards presented to this restaurant some years ago, and high valuation by commendators as shown in their website. However, I don't share the same experience. The food is OK and decent, not the finest quality. The servicing staff are nice and helpful. However, they didn't check if we have any allergy at all. Also, they served chef presented tapas with blue cheese and I don't eat blue cheese. The decoration is neat and tidy. I would expect more characters or classy decoration giving relatively higher price point of this restaurant.

To me thiis place seriously lacked atmosphere, it was uncomfortably quiet, the interiors lacked finesse and the 'wow factor'. The food wasn't as impressive as one would expect from a Micheline star establishment. Both the starter - scallops and the main course -venison had sauces that tasted just a touch too sweet for the savoury nature of the dish and there was not enough in the dish that counteracted with that sweetness. The texture of both dishes was lacking something substantial or crunchy that would offer an interesting, exciting viriety to the composition of the dish and balance out the foamy creaminess of the base and the sauces upon which the meats were served.

Was looking forward to our visit after seeing the publicity, but disappointed. Great service, interesting canapés and good food, however, not Michelin standard in my opinion. The presentation was lacking in both the main and starter (compared to other such acclaimed restaurants) and not the technical excellence I would expect for an establishment with such a reputation charging £60 for two courses. The decor seems a little ‘cheap’ and verging on the edge of dated. Would happily return as the food was great, but horrendously overpriced for what it was....left hungry, portion sizes weren’t great

Fig para una indulgencia suavemente insistente.

No podemos esperar. Gracias.

We came here to celebrate our 5 years anniversary. We had one of the best meal and best experience here. The service is excellent and food is full of surprises. We have already started planning for our next visit. Thanks for keeping such a good standard and serving delicious and well thought of dishes. We hope to be back again soon

This was a delightful experience from the elegant dining room, well spaced for Covid compliance, and the excellent service to the exquisite food. There was a very interesting and successful combination of ingredients in the main courses with many delicious extra courses, creating a memorable meal which was not too heavy. I would definitely like to visit again if I am ever in the area.

David’s cookery and Helen’s hospitality were excellent. 4 course a la carte menu eaten by myself and my partner. My selections were: Entrees, Pre starter of bone marrow custard which was excellent, a starter of Pigs Twitter, Snails and Pigs cheek (the presentation was fantastic but my only criticism of the whole meal was that the pigs cheek was dry and was not ‘falling apart’, it was not the best slow cooked pigs cheek I have eaten), lamb breast for the main, a pre desert of espresso flavours which was one of the best pre deserts I have ever had, bitter chocolate and pistachio delice with pistachio ice cream and then the cheese selection which was excellent.Be sure to have the Cabrales blue cheese from Spain. It is excellent!

We were staying in Cheltenham and booked this restaurant based on reviews on TA. The fixed menu dishes we chose were delicious. There were little tasty extras served which were also delicious. The waitresses were able to remember every detail when describing the dishes and the cheeseboard with around 15 cheeses - great memory skills!! We thoroughly enjoyed our last meal in Cheltenham and would recommend this restaurant to anyone staying in the area wanting a special foodie experience.

A very good meal with very powerful but well thought out flavours. Service was very impressive, wines well, chosen and good value. The extra courses were interesting and stimulated the taste buds. Cheltenham is very fortunate to have such an array of good restaurants, with the Champignon Sauvage at the pinnacle.

Amazing! Probably the best meal I have ever had. Ordered from the 3 course set menu which is £75pp, however it is more like a tasting menu! We were given 4 courses which were not included in the menu, which were all absolutely delicious, especially the pre-dessert! Service is impeccable, all waitresses were absolutely lovely. Worth every penny!

It was nice but unfortunately, I feel the only thing I will remember about my experience will be the high cost and it’s winter menu in the hight of summer. Would I recommend or return unlikely. Also it was my wife’s significant birthday and what they did was very sad

Brilliant! Even with Covid all precautions were taken to make this an excellent dining experience. You get what you pay for. Good value for money.

We had our first post-lockdown meal at Le Champignon, and couldn't fault a thing. All safety measures are in place - sanitiser, one way system, tables spaced appropriately. Most importantly, the food and service are still absolutely perfect. An amazing meal.

Had a fabulous meal here whilst staying in Cheltenham. Delicious flavours and beautiful presentation. All staff were lovely and friendly whilst also being very professional and skilled in their work. Plenty of room between tables and safe precautions taken in light of current Covid situation. Thank you for making our evening a special one.

No idea why the Michelin guide chose to "downgrade" this wonderful restaurant from two to one stars. Their inspectors must be idiots. This was my first post-lockdown visit and it was every bit as good as it had been before. I went for the fixed price menu, stunning value, and had three great courses. Gurnard to start with and pollock for the main: both cheap ingredients but beautifully presented with so much extra on the plates. And then the cheese, for which Le Champignon have always been famous for, and again it did not disappoint with a terrific selection of English and continental cheeses. Finally, their wine list show modest markups for a restaurant of this quality so our meal could be accompanied by a premiere cru chablis.

Remains our first choice when choosing a restaurant for special occasions. Booked as soon as reopened after lockdown knowing social distancing would not be an issue. Once again exquisite food coupled with discrete, knowledgeable and friendly service. Wines very well priced. Remains leading culinary experience in the county and excellent value as a mitchelin star restaurant.

Absolutely loved being back here after lockdown. We went on their first night after being allowed back to open and we were not disappointed.Apart from hand sanitising, having our temperature taken on the way in and a few arrows on the floor, I am relieved to say, the restaurant still maintained its authenticity with safety measures in place. The tables were always a good distance apart anyway. The menu was mouthwatering and adventurous as ever. The food absolutely divine from the appetisers, freshly made rolls, starters, mains, desert and petit fours. Our favourite cheese board did not disappoint either, although a smaller selection than usual, the waitress recalling all the names and strengths of the cheeses plus their textures and their origins was pretty impressive.A fabulous night, with exquisite food and terrific service. Cannot wait to return. Thank you Helen and team.

What a lovely experience. Knowledgeable and unpretentious staff, fabulous food...the best amuse bouches....a real treat and petit fours to die for. We had lobster followed by venison all cooked to perfection with a nice bottle of red, at a reasonable price. A pleasantly quiet ambience with subtle music. We'll be back !

We eat out a lot in Cheltenham but hadn't been to Champignon Sauvage for many years. As soon as we tasted the superb food we asked why it had taken us so long to come back to this amazing restaurant. Without a doubt one of the best meals we have eaten. The service was friendly and very professional. Perhaps it was the Michelin star that had put us offend a sense that the food would be very expensive. With the set meal options it isn't expensive and the wine list offers some great reasonably priced choices. We are lucky to have such a great restaurant near us and will be back soon.

Treated my husband for the set 3 course lunch. Such an amazing restaurant. We’ve been here several times and it just gets better. The food was exceptional, as always and my husband was made to feel very special for his birthday. It’s not pretentious in any way and we always feel it’s great value. We will be back.

The food was amazing and overall ana amazing experience. The restaurant was nice and modern and it was very smart. Although my only complaint is that it is quite small so many people can't get tables.

We sat down in the corner of the pub with our drinks planning on getting food and probably staying there for a while. The table was not reserved in any way, we were sat there for over 30 minutes having a nice quiet drink until the rudest, scruffiest man with long greasy hair and moustache came over and told us to 'get up, I need the table'. Didn't even bother to explain why, or even apologise then just stood there saying 'get up'. I genuinely didn't even realise he worked there.. I thought he was some random man asking us to get up. The pub was full with no other tables available. We were clearly an easy target being one of the youngest (29 and 31). The pub was full of over 50s. Not our fault you couldn't organise enough chairs and tables for a larger group. Clearly an error on your behalf. Safe to say we will never step foot in this place again.

Daphne is always a great place to get away from the festival crowds in a pretty side street just off the Royal Well Crescent and a short walk from the vibrant Promenade. Ilhan the owner and chef is always there with a warm welcome and cooks everything fresh to order. We love the fillet steaks and last night’s were just perfect, not an ounce of fat in them and cooked medium rare just as we asked. The mixed mezze mini salad starters are really tasty too, including minty tabbouleh, fish and beetroot salads, all home made and served with baked bread. It is a family run business and so if you can book ahead that’s great to help them prepare service but they always welcome walk ins too.

Very disappointed. The place was cold so sat in our coats. I had a coffee to warm me up which cost £4.75 - ridiculous price. We had to wait an hour for our food even though it was not busy. The food was nicely cooked but very small for the price. Will not be going back in a hurry.
