Le Cafe du Marche in Islington

I would not recommend this otherwise lovely, ever slightly secretive dining place for vegetarians. My starter was lovely but the only vegetarian main, was very basic. Prices are too high. I liked the live music.. You pay for the ambience not the food in my experience. Service was good.

Just few steps from Hercule Poirot home and office (Florin Court) we found this beautiful and stylish restaurant where the great detective could have his lunch! Perfect food, drinks and staff, you do not want to leave it.

Wonderful ambience as usual. One of my favourite places to be in London. Red wine was cold for both bottles which was a bit of a let down. Otherwise a lovely evening.

We went to Le Cafe du Marche for my birthday and had a wonderful night out. The food was amazing and the live piano music made it really romantic. Definitely my new favourite place for date nights

4 of us for lunch, old chums catching up. Excellent food - the shared Chateaubriand for 2 was just superb - the best I have had for a long, long time and copious - portions here are not mean. We were all very happy with our meals and the wines and port were excellent. We pushed the boat out and we received value in return. Friendly and efficient service, warm ambience, charming surroundings. Pre-prandials at the lovely old Fox and Anchor next door, altogether a delightful afternoon. I will definitely go back and soon. Highly-recommended.

As someone with elderly deafness the noise level is important. even when full later on the noise level was tolerable. Piano noise was just right, perceptible without being intrusive. Cote du Boeuf was satisfactory, soup de poisson was very good, Cotes du Rhone was good, balanced and complemented the meat.

Waiting staff knew nothing about the wine list; one waitress even started searching for the wines on her phone to find a description!

The food was pretty disappointing in all honesty. The starters were cold (which is ok) but it tasted like it was straight out of the fridge, rather than room temperature. The mains were good but the veal was extremely tough and chewy (as it was a thin cut). The dessert (chocolate tarte) was perfect. Would not recommend again for these prices. The execution of food was sub par.

Everything was spot on. Beautiful restaurant that feels like an authentic French countryside bistro. The service was top class. The food we chose was all outstanding and the portions were very healthy despite very nice presentation. The wine list was hearty. The price very reasonable for this quality of food. A pianist played decent stuff throughout the evening. A first rate evening.

Tucked away and little known by Londoners. This French restaurant is top class ambiance, service, food, drinks. Price very decent at about £75 a head three course and drinks. It’s class and you won’t regret coming here.

Wonderful evening as always, never disappoints. It has two areas; one very romantic and the other more open and light.

Very enjoyable lunch in a charming setting. The food was well prepared and attractively presented. Service was attentive and prompt. I will go back for sure. If I had one bit of development it would be for the Maitre d’i. He was polite and efficient but unsmiling/warm - an off day? It impacted the otherwise very positive feeling of the place.

Apart from 5 star cuisine and ambience a BIG shout out for Annassa who found my mobile and glasses on our table. Cleverly she took them home with her as the restaurant was closed for a couple of days and she kindly met me the very next morning to give them back! It’s that thoughtfulness that will persuade me to return again to this gem of a restaurant in the years to come. An excellent find! And thanks Annassa 👌🏻

We were two couples looking for a midweek dining choice near to our office and booked based on optics alone without reading reviews or asking around. Really glad we did. Overall, the experience was excellent surpassing expectation on most levels. Not sure I should recommend though as doing so may make it harder to find a table next time we look for one!

I had the terrine to start which has a poached egg on top but egg yolk was not runny , which spoiled it Waiter complained we hung our coats on wrong coat hook but there was no direction so we chose nearest to where we were sitting , weird to comment therefore

We visited Café du Marche for our works Christmas celebration last week. We were a table of 13, so a large table to serve. I cannot praise the service we received enough, the staff were attentive, friendly and very adept at serving a large (and probably a little drunk) table of guests. When our food arrived each dish was put in front of the right person without any needing to check who had ordered what which I thought was very impressive. Glasses were never empty and anything we needed was catered for. The food was fantastic and we had a wonderful night which was enjoyed by all. I would highly recommend this restaurant for great food, atmosphere and service, we will definitely visit again. Thank You Café du Marche for a fantastic evening

As always I had a great meal at Le Cafe Du Marche. It has been one of my “Go to” restaurants for many years and it invariably never disappoints. Conceptually simple with great food and well priced wine.

Wonderful dinner. The team kindly adapted to our booking mistake and we had a great evening. Classic French cooking and good regional wines. Cannot wait to return!

This was a return to Le Cafe du Marche for the first time in many years and a first time for my guest. The staff were highly attentive but not overbearing and the food was delicious, as was the wine. The fries could have been a little crisper but this is a very mild criticism. The surprise entertainment from a jazz duo of piano and double bass was an added bonus! Definitely returning soon.

As usual the service and the food was excellent. I have no problem in recommending this restaurant. It really is worth a visit!

After having been a returning customer for some 30 or so years Le Cafe du Marche never fails to impress. Food as always was excellent, the wine superb and the service attentive but unobtrusive. With one of the party in a wheelchair and then on crutches she was accommodated with any fuss or bother. Needless to say we will be there again certainly early in the new year probably to celebrate our join birthdays. The place is a hidden gem which one would like to keep hidden for selfish reasons, but that said we are glad that it appears to be very well patronised.

We had a fabulous time here last night . Great atmosphere Great food Lovely staff What more could you ask for and the pianist just tipped it all off. Will definitely be back.

Great place. Everything a restaurant should be really. Pity more don’t follow this traditional French model which has stood the test of time. So nice to have live (unobtrusive) music too. And staff that just do their job professionally and discreetly instead of lecturing guests on each course or constantly interrupting conversations to upsell booze or ask how everything is (they already know it’s good). My pheasant was cooked beautifully. Will definitely return.

I've been wanting to dine at Le Cafe du Marche for years. It's been around a long time. We arrived at 12 noon. By 1pm it was full - largely of business people (not many drinking booze!). The set menu has recently gone up in price (website now adjusted) but is still good value. Wonderful french bread and butter immediately served. Mrs had a crab tartlette to start (she loved it) and I had a superb game terrine. I could have been in France. We shared the cote du boeuf which came with good fries and a bit of slady stuff. Plenty of drinks, a decent pinot noir red called Enfant Rascalle (or Terrible or something similar). No room for pudding. A very enjoyable and relaxed couple of hours. About £100 a head. Only downside was the rather 'offish' service from one lady although still a solid 5 star review. Will 100% go back one day and may not leave it 35 years this time.

My first visit since the pandemic ended. Fantastic wine, food and vibe as usual.

This spot is great for a meal with friends or a romantic night out. It's tucked away in a lovely corner of Clerkenwell in one of those rare old buildings full of charm and character. Service is lovely and the kitchen is very accommodating of dietary requirements (and any last minute affogato requests!)

Perfect French comfort food for a Friday in November, based around the cassoulet

Walked through the covered cobblestone courtyard into the restaurant and almost into Paris. The vibe put a big smile on my face and my companions. Wonderful ambience, simple tasty French food, all with fries and side salad, and a glass of red. Whats not to like.

The food was excellent, completely delicious and extremely good value for money. Also an excellent wine list, with glasses of wine very well priced. The ambiance is terrific andvthecwaiters charming. I have been before and will go again, many times I hope!

I love this restaurant and the ambience is always very inviting. Crab starter was a little underwhelming as parts were a bit cold and you could tell the pastry case was only married up with the contents before serving. We all had the Cote de Bouef which was fantastic as always. All in all a great lunch and my clients loved it. Best steak and frites in London hands down.

We last visited 5 years ago😱. Has always been our aim to go again. So it was a real treat to finally go whilst we were going to see Blanco White at the Barbican. The perfect combination 😍 Food was excellent waiters very attentive and knowledgeable. Just hope it won’t be another 5 years until our next visit

A stones throw from Farringdon meat market. Tucked away in a quite corner, As you walk in, you feel you really are in the middle of Paris. It has a very rustic feel. Live piano player in the background lifts the atmosphere. Food is simple but full of flavour. Cote de boeuf is excellent juicy and tender, served with "chips and salad" with a selection of sauces, nice and simple, and very yummy. will be back asap

I have not been to this atmospheric restaurant for at least 20 years and i was quite pleased to see that little had changed regarding the decor and furniture. The menu is short but the dishes offered had a gallic appeal. My host and I opted for the 2-course menu at £39.95 both starting with Soupe de Poisson which was a deep, rich red bowl of real Marseille style flavour accompanied by croutons, aoili and some grated cheese. The soup arrived hot and quickly. So far so good. Then, surprisingly, service fell of the fabled cliff and our Cote de Boeuf (for 2) with sauce bearnaise (£19 supplement) arrived after about an hour of waiting without any meaningful explanation. Disappointingly the meat was rather cold and quite tough which considering it was premium priced was not acceptable. This was accompanied by a satisfactory bottle of the red Cuvee Garrigue from Languedoc (£29.95). I much enjoyed the company but the service and beef quality should be so much better. Interestingly, as I was leaving another table was complaining vociferously about very tough Roast Partridge breast so perhaps there is an ongoing kitchen problem that needs attention before reputations are further dented?

Delightfully French ambience and delicious food. Love that you get chips and salad with everything (though chips are to share). The service was a bit slow - it took a while to order the food and a long time for the bill toarrive. But overall a lovely restaurant and very welcoming staff.

Excellent service in a lovely ambience. The food was well presented and didn’t disappoint in flavour. The restaurant was buzzing creating a lovely atmosphere - not so good if you were planning an intimate meal. All in all a lovely restaurant and we hope to return one day.
