We had a lovely coffee each and 1 x date & walnut scone, 1 x cheese scone. Cannot fault the food or drink. But I was disappointed that even though I requested no butter and asked for a small amount of onion chutney instead. I was charged the chutney as an extra. Considering I can buy chutney cheaper than butter I found this rather mean! I then went to their next door shop to buy a ginger loaf cake, the first one I picked up was out of date by 2 months! I gave it to the lady at the counter, not a thank you uttered for pointing it out she just proceeded to put a reduced sticker on it. I don't think I would be buying a cake dated best before the 5th March on the 2nd May!

Well it does look like a nice spot to sit and have a cuppa but the staff make the place less pleasant. The staff seemed constantly rushed off their feet when, as far as i could tell there were very few customers. Two staff on that day and the male of the two served us. He got the order wrong but charged us correct price so we didnt bring the error up as we could see from the conversations that went on while we waited for our drink that speed was not their forte so we weren’t about to enter in to discussions about wrong order. Hot chocolate and cake were fine. Staff manners were lacking. Staff turned away customers when there was ample room, all other customers already seated had their order so can’t understand their reasoning. They kept saying we are full and their is only two of us! Crazy way to run a business. I agree with the faulty towers analogy made in another review. This could be a great place if run properly. So i would say go, see if you catch them on a good day but if you are three or more people be prepared to be turned away. A guy with a dog was welcomed at the door and asked to sit outside, understandable, however as he tried to come in to place his order ( which you need to do inside) he was told to leave dog outside. Hows this possible if you are on your own. Bit of common sense from staff needed to enable lone travellers chance to order while they have their dog. A kind bystander offered to stand by the door with his dog. Ridiculous! Less running round like headless chickens, maybe an update on some equipment so it doesnt take forever for orders and stream line menu to items that can be processed quickly. There is at least one other tearoom in Thornton maybe that one is nicer i can’t comment. But Lavenders is in such a nice location with outside seating. Please owner of this place make it the lovely place it could be on a consistent basis.

Consistent at least. After many years of visiting now and then it’s lovely to experience the same terrible service. Rude from the off (even though almost empty) these people have zero manners and love to make you feel unwelcome from the off. I see it’s the same owner offering the same sub standard service. The younger staff are great and always helpful, just the old folk who struggle to smile. Just popped in whilst waiting for something…made me chuckle tbh. Go and experience the lack of warmth and polite service for yourself. I’ll be coming back just to wind them up. P.s For god sake! Don’t ever to take your children there, they hate kids!

We have regularly been for coffee lunch here always good. We arrived this time to a rude gentleman which when asked if we could have a table for 6 (4 adults and 2 children) we also needed a high chair, I was rudely told he could only seat 2 tables of 3 splitting the family up, despite an empty outdoor seating area ! When asked my he muttered something and stormed off. Shame as was rude and clearly has an issue with children.

On a beautiful summer's day this looked like the ideal spot for a light lunch. We had an hour to spare before our car park ticket ran out, thanks to a planned visit to the (closed) motor museum not being possible. We sat outside and ordered toasted panini and some drinks. The drinks arrived promptly and we sat back to enjoy the delightful surroundings. And we sat and sat and sat! After 40 minutes we asked how things were coming along with the food. "Just another five or perhaps 15 minutes" we were told. We said that wasn't good enough, and were refunded our money, (less drinks). We just made it back to the car park in time. It's an undeniably pleasant spot, but just don't order hot food. They only seem interested in serving scones, presumably there's no need to send someone to Italy to fetch those!

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry about my experience at Lavenders. We arrived at opening on Saturday morning looking to have a sandwich and a drink for breakfast. I was greeted by a very welcoming young lady and seated in lovely surroundings. It goes downhill from here. I ordered a sausage sandwich, just the ticket for a lovely Saturday morning, I was told after about 10 minutes or so that they had no sausages. OK, could I have a bacon sandwich? The lovely young lady went to check, no they had no bacon either. How they didn’t have any basic breakfast ingredients on a Saturday morning at opening is beyond me. It gets better (or worse depending on your view point). We finish up as we were hungry at this point and we heard a major disturbance inside, shouting etc, the owner then storms outside and starts to close the tea room turning around the sign, we found this strange. There was much more shouting which was then preceded with all the staff being told to leave! Life has its ups and downs but the shocking service to customers, and the poor staff leaves a lot to be desired. So, a lovely location but avoid if you’re hungry. If you do go, don’t ask for a bacon butty or you may get more than you bargained for!

We called for a snack/light lunch but ended up full. My partner ordered posh cheese on toast which came with coleslaw, chutney & a side salad. It was delicious - thick slices of bread with two kinds of cheese. I ordered a high tea, which was also very good. I chose ham sandwich along with fruit scone & a pot of tea. The ham sandwich had a chutney on and the scone came with jam & proper thick cream. Along with another pot of tea the bill came to £22 which was fine. We also asked for extra hot water which came with a smile.

After visiting Thorton-le-dale we were looking for a quick cup of tea and cake, a short rest before setting off on our journey home. We noticed the tea rooms in a loveley location and walked over to sit at one of the empty tables. There were 4 people, 2 couples seated and eating. The closing time was stated 4pm, we arrived at 3.30pm. A short time later after being seated. We were Rudely & Abruptly told from a distance " Excuse me! We are Closed, You have just walked past our closed sign". Neither of us noticed it, we wouldn't have taken offence if we were approached at the table and advised in a more polite tone of voice. Other diners turned to look. The "Lady" the turned and walked away, said no more & went inside. We left and found what we needed directly across the road at a much cheaper price and much better service. We finished our snacks and walked past the tea rooms on our way to car park, there were customers still seated and eating. We could have been easily served and finished before them, but in hindsight pleased I didn't spend money there. It's not what was said but the Rude and Abrupt manner in which it was said. Manners cost nothing and reading reviews from other customers it does appear we are not the only people to experience this unnaceptable behaviour. Avoid this place, it's only the location by the Beck that is attractive. Much better service and Pricing across the road, spend your money with people that are Polite and want your custom.

A staff member walked inside but did not acknowledge us nor the couple behind. We waited but no one came to seat us so after a 10-15 min wait we and the other couple walked off. We went across the road, were seen and seated straight away by staff. I noted previous comment and cannot speak about staff shortage or attitude if staff as that would be unfair. However, a simple acknowledgement would have been acceptable. The cafe location is good and they appear to be COVID compliant.

As someone who is shielding, it is so lovely to be able to visit a tea shop like Lavenders where they are taking Covid seriously. The staff are all very pleasant and are clearly working hard in these very trying times. Food, prepared individually for each customer is obviously going to take a little longer than it used to but personally I prefer to know that there’s no risk of cross contamination. The actual quality of the food is always top notch and the scones are possibly the nicest you can get. Having been for lunch again today I’m hoping for another rain free day when I can sit outside and enjoy a lovely lunch before winter! This is the 4th and final time my wife and I have visited this tea room over the last 5 years or so. We have always found it very overpriced, slow service, and very unfriendly. Apart from a young man who served us, the rest of the interaction with the staff was not very pleasant; they do not convey the spirit of the usual friendliness of most Yorkshire folk. The mature chap who showed us in told us we had to wear masks as we went in. This is totally ridiculous and unnecessary, because it is neither practicable or a legal requirement to wear a face covering when eating inside, and certainly when not eating outside; so why on Earth do they insist on you wearing a mask whilst entering the tea room, when you take it off as soon as you get inside. This is being over zealous to an absolutely ridiculous degree. We only visit Thornton-Le-Dale to go to Mathewsons, so next time we will take a packed lunch. We thought this time that perhaps it was just previous staff that were so unfriendly, and we would give give the tea room ‘another go’; sadly the experience was not any more pleasant that previously.

Myself and my husband visited yesterday to enjoy a tea break in the sun, I now wish we had taken our business to one of the other lovely places in the village. After walking inside to purchase some biscuits I picked up a box in order to read the ingredients list on the back (a requirement for whom I was gifting them to). This provoked an extremely rude reaction from the member of staff who pointed to a very small, poorly positioned sign and told me that I would now have to buy them as I had touched them. I would’ve quite happily bought the biscuits as I understand the rules and regulations due to covid-19, however, to be told in such a manner was quite frankly rude and abrupt. Later in the day I went into a different shop and explained that I would not touch anything to be met with the lovely response ‘oh don’t worry we can just sanitise it after’, something which could’ve easily been done at the lavender tea rooms. I understand that the present situation has plunged many businesses into a panic of new rules and risk assessments, however, politeness and the ability to not ruin someone’s day with your tone is not difficult. Your reply to your previous complaint is that you are ‘working hard to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit to lavenders’, well I believe you need to work harder and think about just how your tone may affect somebody’s day. The contact I had with a box of your biscuits did not compromise safety but it did ensure that we will not visit again nor be recommending you to anyone. A real shame.

This is a lovely setting, the room and the cutlery and crockery would grace any Michelin Star rated place. Cute extras like doilies and cosies on the teapots are nice.Service was quick , even with a slight kerfuffle with the order, but no worries, we’re all human. The tea, coffee and cake we ordered were all really good and prices are fair and square, so far so good. However, food-wise there are a few issues. The two leak and potato soups were unseasoned to the point of being bland, also very small amount of spud, I actually had the devil of a job finding one at all. I ordered my soup as part of a deal which included a sandwich. Because of this deal my soup didn’t get bread awarded. I ordered an Egg mayonnaise sandwich with my soup. I received what I would describe as a medium sized bread cake , the type you get in supermarkets as a pack of 6. The Egg Mayo itself was the from a catering tub, runny as could be , pretty awful really. This was served on its own, uncut, without any garnish, salad or crisps. It was a rather forlorn looking thing that looked like a Truck drivers pack up. The total bill was £21.90 I think, I left still ravenous and topped up with a sandwich and a sausage roll from across the road. My wife ordered quiche that was quite nice but also tiny, with a little bit of coleslaw. Stop for a drink it’s nice, however consider your eating options, especially if you belly is rumbling or your watching the shillings.

We sat in this cafe that looks very nice for a lunch. my boyfriend ordered two sandwiches asking for a tunamayo and a ham and cheese (on the menu it was presented as a yorkshire ham, cheese and tomato but he simply asked for a cheese and ham). when the sandwiches arrived in his there was simply cheese and tomato, so my boyfriend stopped the waitress to point out that the ham was missing. I worked as a waitress for years and I know it would have been enough to apologize and put some ham in the sandwich (since we wouldn't have wanted a new one anyway because we had to take the bus 45 minutes later). instead the waitress first claimed that in that sandwich it was necessary to choose between ham and cheese and then when my boyfriend showed her what was written on the menu she told him to go to the cashier to see how to solve. at the cash desk she pretended to say that my boyfriend had ordered cheese and tomato and when he replied that it really wasn't like that, she went off puffing. after that my boyfriend said to, what I think was the owner, he had not liked the girl's attitude and that after all this he didn't really want the sandwich anymore and wanted a refund (word that the owner made him repeat 3 times! we are not English and maybe the pronunciation was not perfect but we live and we have been working in England for two years, and this is a tourist town that should therefore be used to tourists and different accents or slightly wrong judgments and honestly this seemed a slightly racist attitude.) the owner replied that he should stay calm and that it was he who didn't like his attitude. he gave him the money and said bye in a really rude way.it is the first time that such a situation occurs to us and, precisely because we have done these jobs, it is really rare that we complain and ask for money back, but it was really an unpleasant experience.

Will be back soon!

We came here last year for lunch on a day trip to Thornton Dale and I said we would come back and we did! Great food, great service, lovely little place. We were served very quickly on a busy bank holiday. Very clean place, plenty of choice of snacks, sandwiches, and meals, including a dedicated children's menu. This will be our regular stop after long drives around the area. Recommended!

It is a lovely café in the centre of Thornton Dale, the food is nice but is over priced in my opinion also as well the elderly gentlemen who served me he was very rude, he didn't seem to have any people skills considering it seemed like he owned the café and you would of thought you would want people to come back but clearly he didn't care about that and as long as you were putting money into the till he didn't care. Instead of going here I would highly recommend going to Baldersons across the road...

We had a wonderful afternoon tea at Lavenders as a birthday treat for our mum. We had a pre-booked table waiting for us (party of 8), and the service was prompt and efficient. The afternoon tea was a selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes, tea or coffee. All the food was delicious, ranking highly as one of the best I have had. The owner, Howard greeted us on arrival, and his staff were very pleasant. The presentation was classically "English", befitting of the beautiful village of Thornton-Le-Dale. We wouldn't hesitate in returning to Lavenders again.

Short visit, we sat outside on a beautiful day with the dog. Just had coffee and juice and a couple of sweet things. The cream egg brownie was delicious and the chocolate chip scone was fabulous with clotted cream and Nutella, what a clever take on the scone for chocoholics like me!! We will be back to try some savoury items!

Having been visiting for many year and being able to reminisce over a scone jam and cream about my late grandfather I was left very disappointed when I took the family here in the summer. We were a party of 7 adults, a 8 yr old and well behaved toddler. We sat outside over two tables waiting to be served only to be approached by the same rude and obnoxious man that served me the year before. His customer service skills had not improved. His issue was that we were a group who sat upstairs. Seemed odd last time and I put it down to a bad day but to have the same issue a year later it’s clear this is his approach to running a business. Last time I gave you the benefit of the doubt that maybe you had a bad day but I was left embarrassed as shocked at his behaviour which he proceeded to conduct in front of my parents. Thank you for ruining my favourite memory with my grandfather. We promptly got up and went and spent our money where it was welcomed. I’m sure this attitude isn’t condoned by the other staff members because as we all got up to leave a lady came out to ask us why we were leaving. I explained and although she apologies why on earth would we want to spend money here. We will do our annual visit again this year and hopefully this rude elderly man has left or has a change of attitude. You should be accepting off any paying customer in the village as over the 30 years of visiting there is little reason for people to stop by now days. The passing trade is dwindling rapidly and shops shutting at a rate of knots.

I have been coming to this cafe for a number of years and generally had few reasons to complain. The staff have always been lovely. One one occasion, however, I was spoken to sharply by a lady I believed to be one of the owners for reasons which escape but didn’t seem to be appropriate at the time.

Having visited this cafe on a number of occasions my last visit was tainted by a very rude lady in the kitchen. I walked into what used to be the shop to buy some food to take away. The shop had turned in to the new kitchen only a week earlier, there were no signs up to show this. I apologised once I realised I had walked into the kitchen but the woman in the kitchen just said firmly 'This is the kitchen, can you get out'. I was really shocked and upset by this as there was no need to speak to any customer in this way. If you want to maintain local customers who support your business through the quiet months then consider employing staff with basic people skills..

What a lovely find on our way home from a seaside visit to Filey where we got caught in a storm. We ordered tea and a scone each and my son had a lemonade and a slice of cheesecake. Unfortunately they had run out of lavender scones but it was 4.15pm so I had a fruit one instead. I loved the fact the tea was served in china teacups and the scone was warm and delicious with lovely jam. All served quickly with friendly staff. Lovely location in such a pretty village. Great place.

Not easy to get parking unless you walk from the municipal but it’s a lovely sheltered spot to watch the world go by. Prices a little higher than villages around but Thornton Le Dale is lovely. Good coffee and toasted tea cakes but cakes much smaller than some other places like say, the Station House at Cloughton. Decent service and top location, definitely worth a stop especially if you can park in the square.

Lovely clean quaint café in a nice setting. We had salads and a pot of tea for brunch in the sunshine, and the food was quite nice. However, the crusts on our bread were mouldy and some of the salad was slimy. In fairness, the waitress must have noticed I'd picked the mould off the bread and brought us some fresh - I left the slimy salad on the side of my plate. We'd ordered the first lunches after they'd stopped serving breakfast, so sadly I deduced that it was yesterday's bread and yesterday's salad. It wasn't bad enough for me to complain, it wasn't enough to put me off, and, what we had was tasty. Service was good. I did notice (maybe the owner) getting shirty with a customer because he tried to sit down outside which was a bit alarming - I gathered he wasn't eating, he wanted a drink and he was ushered inside for some reason?! I think I caught that the tables outside were reserved for eating? I find that strange? Nothing better than enjoying the Yorkshire sunshine and a pot of tea! Now that type of attitude puts me off from returning and if I'd have been the chappie, I'd have gone across the road ...

It was busy when we arrived but they reserved us an outdoor table for 4 of us for 30 minutes later. The menu was a decent size with plenty of options and I had the goats cheese salad with honey dressing. I think this was maybe the best salad I have ever had; it was absolutely delicious! It was a decent portion with 2 massive pieces of cheese and I ate every speck of it! My partner had a jacket potato with cheese and pineapple and said it was also great. The staff were very pleasant and friendly and the prices very reasonable. What topped it all off was the setting; what a delightful little gem we found!
