This is a great pub with friendly and welcoming staff and locals. The home cooked food was excellent and the service superb. A variety of ales (cask and keg) and lagers are served in this Camera pub. We'll certainly be going again and would recommend this pub to anyone wanting a drink and/or a meal.

We decided to have dinner here one evening after a day in Dumfries as we were staying in a farmhouse nearby. The children were entertained with the bag of outdoor toys and a grassy area to play. We sat outside in the beer garden. Ordered the fish and chips and it came quickly. The best fish and chips I’ve had in a long time! So fresh and battered lightly and to perfection. Thoroughly enjoyed ! Our friends are coeliac and the GF choice was great! The really enjoyed the GF macaroni and GF risotto. Staff were helpful and friendly. We will be back when staying in the area again. Would love to try the Sunday lunch ! Massive thanks for a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and top notch food.

It was great to be back inside a proper pub, with a log fire in the bar too! The covid regulations are adhered to in an impressive and reassuring way. Current opening hours were clearly displayed outside, which is something other local places could learn from. I noticed a large covered area in the back garden and only wish it had been warm enough for us new pensioners to take advantage of, since a pint before our meal would have been great. We received a warm welcome for our 6.30pm booking and service was efficient. Ginger beer all round (!) and we dived straight into the main course. The beef bourguignon with cheddar mash and a good selection of veg was tasty and welcome as was the lamb shoulder. Finished with apple pie or sticky toffee pud and custard and we were out on the dot of 8pm. Only niggle was that the food wasn't piping hot but I'm beginning to think this is a custom in this part of Scotland. It is a pub I would return to if we come to the area on holiday again.

We regularly eat here and have found the food excellent and very fairly priced with a varied menu. The service is exemplary; I have peculiar dietary needs and these are always catered for. Usually we go to meet with other vintage/classic car owners but have also been for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries or when we have visitors including my vegan son. We visited this evening, whilst on holiday, with family. There was sanitiser available on arrival and a clear 1 way system, throughout the pub. Several other COVID measures, including antibacterial wipes and occupied/vacant signs in the toilets were welcome additions. All of the staff wore masks and were very pleasant and friendly. The service was most efficient and helpful, without being intrusive. A few prior reviews noted that the pace of service was an issue, however, we were offered drinks promptly after arriving and food was delivered without delay. The selection of food was plentiful, with something to suit every taste. We opted for starters including garlic mushrooms, smoked mackerel salad and soup of the day. The food was all piping hot, on arrival; aside from the salad, of course! We all thoroughly enjoyed this course and left nothing! Our mains followed promptly; including roast beef, haddock and chips, sea bass, macaroni and the steak burger. Portions were generous and again, we all enjoyed all of the food. Everything was fresh tasting and the dishes were evidently homemade. We were all quite full after the delicious food, but couldn’t resist the choice of desserts. We opted for Apple Charlotte and Panna Cotta. Once again, these were excellent and again, homemade. The meal, service and atmosphere were faultless and we would not hesitate to return, nor recommend the pub to others; it was thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.

However when they did arrive they were delicious, no complaints, pity the same couldn’t be said of three of the six meals which were steaks , they were tough and grisly, I have cooked better steaks from ALDI .

We needed somewhere to eat early as we were on our way to the Cinema in Castle Douglas. They do food right through. We ate in the dining room, warmed through by a blazing log fire. The food was good, above usual pub standard, and our fussy needs were catered for happily. The three of us all agree, pork, gammon and my salmon were yummy and well cooked and presented. Win. Unfortunately we were in a rush so had to pass on deserts, but the landlady, knowing where we were going, said call back later and I'll sort puds! So we did, 10pm gone, and we sat in the public bar and devoured cheese cake and ice cremes. Hubs and friend played pool, I chatted with a local and enjoyed the music - two local farmers playing accordions who kindly played my request. It was a delightful evening and despite the distance we shall be back. Thank you so much.

We were a group of 5 including 3 vegetarians. We had lunch in the bar area. The menu was varied with a wide choice of dishes. We all had starters and a main course. For starters 4 of us had breaded mushrooms with garlic dip and one had nachos. All very tasty and filling. For mains two had battered haddock, one had scampi, one had chicken burger and one had steak and ale pie. We all had chips. The chips were home made, crispy on the outside and absolutely succulent inside. The portions were very generous and everyone was delighted with the food. A good choice of beers were available and Puce Moose and Raven Ale were chosen. Really good well kept beers. First of all il start by saying possibly it was an off day for the chef or a change of chef because the majority of the reviews are excellent. A group of 9 of us visited on a Sunday, we were but 1 the only table in. Most ordered the roast beef, couple the burger and 1 the chicken. I ordered the steak pie. We waited nearly an hour but that was ok because at least you know your meal is being made fresh. My plate arrived steak pie, broccoli, carrots and chips. Sadly the only thing on my plate that was hot was the chips. The stew was tough and dry, hardly any gravy and the pastry was chook Never have I experienced tough pastry. The veg was rock solid and cold. I do like my veg with a bite but I don’t think it seen a minute in hot water. Roast beef was dry and the same about the veg. I believe the chicken was nice but same about the veg. Sadly below standard food for restaurant prices. Hopefully just an off day for Cook that day!

20 years after we visited the Laurie Arms and after reading the reviews decided on a return visit for my husband's birthday. We were very disappointed. The welcome was ok, but I certainly have received better. The place looks a little tired and in need of some modernisation as we recognised the stuffed fish in it's case from our last visit. The two waitresses who arrived shortly after us were pleasant but there was lots of whispering at the bar as they went around their tasks of cleaning the cutlery, which was slightly off putting. We both ordered pate for starters and expected a slice or a small dish of pate, but what arrived was a dollop on the plate, unattractive to say the least although it tasted ok. My husbands steak was over cooked and at £23 we expected much better. My scampi was fine but the peas and chips were bland. The extra portion of onion rings were plentiful but not nice in appearance or taste. We have since learned that the business has been up for sale for the last year and perhaps the owners have lost interest. Unfortunately not the birthday celebration we planned.

We dined here twice during our 5 days in Castle Douglas and we loved everything about it. We had two vegetarians in our party, and they recommended the gnocchi, which was perfectly cooked with a very tasty sauce. The fish and chips were light and perfectly cooked, and the side vegetables were not overcooked. They have a good selection of ciders - we especially enjoyed the cider on tap, and the strawberry pomegranate cider. The owner is friendly and welcoming, and even put us in the fancy dining room, which was officially closed, when the bar was full. You MUST try the sticky toffee pudding - the butterscotch sauce on it is to die for!

Disappointed after reading good reviews. Desserts and fish pie lovely the rest not so good. Restaurant prices for sitting in bar and having bar food. Burger tasteless and in cheapest white bun (£10). Prawn cocktail consisted of shrimps tossed in Marie Rose sauce on top of leaves (£6). Left 2 out of 3 vegetables that came with fish pie - not everyone likes pickled cabbage and courgettes! Staff very friendly but unfortunately would not go back based on this experience.

My wife and I ate here twice during our weeks holiday in Castle Douglas. It is a very good country pub, nice log fires and very friendly and welcoming staff.Menu choice was very good - regular menu supplemented by a wide choice of chef's daily specials. Food is cooked and presented very well. No issues with any of the dishes ordered. Very tasty.Homemade puds to follow mains were good too!! (Yummy!)Pricing was reasonable for both food and drinks.

Real Ale pub with lots of awards. Excellent for hospitality. Got offered 3 tastes before selected favourite. We had already eaten by the time we encountered this gem. Food looked good and other eating patrons ate up and complimented the food. Will certainly try this establishment next time we're in the area for food.

Visited on Sunday evening. I can honestly say it's the best meal out I've had in a long while. I ordered the lambs liver which was perfectly cooked so easy to get it wrong, complimented with fresh vegetables including red cabbage, a nice touch. Delicious and all for a very modest sum.

Homley village pub with traditional real ales on offer. Friendly bar staff. The food is very good too. Would definitely recommend. Reasonable food prices. It's also nice to sit in front of a roaring fire.

Arrived here on Saturday night to stay in our van on the car park. It's a lovely old worldy pub and the landlady was very pleasant. There is a variety of games - we played darts, pool, scrabble, chess. The cider was lovely and the landlady was nice enough to give us some hot water for our water bottles before we went to bed. Great little pub. Look forward to visiting again in the future :)

We were recommended this pub by the man whose house we rented (Larch House). We booked by phone but was running late on our way up from Cheshire, Sandra was fine when we rang to let her know. 7 of us ate in the bar as we had our dog with us, wide menu choice, good sized portions, lovely homemade steak n ale pies with lots of fresh veg, tasty good quality burgers, chicken & chorizo skewers, good pint of bitter, they even boxed up desserts to take away as we were too full to eat them. Nice quaint homely pub with ample parking and friendly welcome.

Never stay at this hotel. The restaurant food is delicious and large portions. My family use to regularly eat here every Sunday before Covid. After Covid there's a staff shortage that affects the quality of the services. I only visit the restaurant again because the hotel is closing on the June 2nd this year. It is sad to see the hotel close. Hopefully someone buys this hotel and turn it into an apartments.
