My friends and I booked a pre theatre meal here not really knowing what to expect and we can honestly say this is our new place to eat. We all had fish and chips which was absolutely delicious as well as piping hot. Desserts were varied but we all were amazed by the large portion sizes, including the ice cream. Toby ,our server was an absolute credit to the restaurant ,with his attentive service, helpfulness and friendly personality. We asked if Sangria was available and although it wasn't on the drinks list 2 jug fulls appeared at our table as they kindly made it up for us and was actually the best we've ever tasted.

Decent menu and not overly expensive. Was fairy quite for a Saturday night but that suited us fine as we were on our way to nearby cliffs pavilion. Food was decent quality, waitresses were both nice and attentive.

Came here with friends as part of a Groupon deal. Good selection of sandwiches and cakes which were all delicious- especially the Viennese biscuits! Lovely view and decor inside was nice. Staff were polite and helpful although there was a wedding on so they were a little stretched. Not sure how much it would be direct with restaurant but the Groupon deal of £11 was well worth it!!

We travelled to the coast for a traditional day by the sea and planned a traditional fish and chips lunch. We booked on-line via "Open Table" website, in advance, having read reviews and were pleased with the menu choices and location of the restaurant. This is a small restaurant/bar in the reception of a hotel. The hotel access is via steep steps - no obvious disabled access. Luckily our elderly party were mobile but were we to have needed wheelchair access it would have been very difficult. The restaurant entrance does not have any obvious host staff or manned desk. After waiting several minutes we made our way back to main reception to advise of our arrival. Not only did the hotel have no record of the booking, despite me providing the email confirmation, but they also don't have any arrangements with the Open Table website, so worth noting if you ever try to book with them. We were then left waiting for several minutes whilst the waiting staff prepared a table. Unfortunately by the time we were seated, we were presented a very limited hotel menu, not the one advertised on the website, and certainly no traditional seafood options, and certainly not worth the trip to the coast. We unfortunately did not keep our booking and left so we could take our elderly party somewhere else more suitable.

To be honest I had high expectations of this restaurant. I was sadly disappointed The waitress was very good Service was slow - my steak arrived well done and I had ordered medium rare - it was take away and they cooked another which was ok -no seasoning quite tasteless - my new potatoes had been heated in fryer very greasy My grandsons chicken was ok but sauce tasteless and seasonal vegetables dumped on plate also not seasoned. No salt and pepper on table nor were we offered any Will not be returning unless they invest in a good chef. I could have done so much better !!!!!

Turned up on a quiet Sunday. Parking is either resident permit machine or a app so bear this in mind . Wanted to change our sandwich fillings but our selection was already prepared so ring in advance if you wish to do this . Standard of food was great polite waitresses and took one bit of cake home and had refill’s of coffee. Pleasant afternoon overlooking the estuary on a sunny afternoon

Worst afternoon tea I have ever been to. Would not recommend. I don’t like butter so asked if I could have some sandwiches with no butter…. I was then told no because they had ran out of bread. It he wait or then said instead could I get you something else I said a scone. He comes back and says there is a bit of drama in the kitchen and out cook has just walked out. So I got no scone either. Of what I did it really basic afternoon tea didn’t enjoy it.

My husband and I booked this restaurant as it is very close to the Cliffs Pavilion and thought it would make a nice change to have a really nice meal with cocktails and be a little spoilt before going to see Michael Bolton. We arrived 10 minutes early and the waiting staff were still in their coats but this said they sat us at a table, there were no menus available as these were waiting to be printed!!! but they did give us a cocktail menu. We ordered two cocktails which were lovely, we were eventually given a menu between us after sitting there for around 25 minutes, when we finally put our order in we asked for another 2 cocktails, only to be told they had a wedding there the day before and had run out of one of the ingredient's in our cocktail, this also happened to the table next to us, they ordered a bottle of wine, only to be told they had none and could they pick from the 3 they had! The food was ok, but I was expecting something a little up market, Ive had better fish and chips from our local chippy and much cheaper. The sad thing is this is a lovely hotel in a very good position and if the owners were to only open their eyes and improve on service and the quality of the food, it would be packed out I am sure.

The food, service, setting & staff were all brilliant, huge selection of sandwiches suitable for vegetarian & meat eaters, the cakes were all home made & delicious. From booking to leaving the staff did above & beyond to make it an enjoyable relaxing afternoon, we were even given boxes for the few bits we couldn't quite manage - too good to leave ! Me and my boyfriend went here for our anniversary meal a couple of weeks ago. I cannot fault this place at all. When booking over the phone I casually mentioned that it was our 4 year anniversary. I wasn’t expecting the amazing service we were given! We arrived to the restaurant a little late, but the staff were truly amazing and reassured us there was no problem and sat us to our table. The table was clothed and had beautiful rose petals scattered across it and looked fabulous. I wasn’t expecting this at all! Now for the best bit- the food! We were given a menu full of variety, I have never seen a place like it in Southend. The restaurant was lit beautifully with candles and being an autumn baby at heart the decor with the pumpkins was warm and welcoming. I had the pork fillet and my partner had the bbq chicken supreme! He’s such a fussy eater so I was so glad we found somewhere that has something he likes! The music was great and the restaurant was lively, mixture of kids and adults. It is such a great menu for a reasonable price! 3 courses for £20! I was in my element. We had extra sides and cocktails which were also amazing. To top it all off the staff brought us a cheesecake to share and wished us a happy anniversary. I have never been anywhere with such amazing service, quality food and such a friendly atmosphere. I noticed on the way out they do afternoon tea also, this is something I am going ahead with booking. I will be back again!!!

Been visiting Great Tides for Mummy meet ups. Food is always really good, they have light snacks and sharing platters on offer as well as the bar menu and there is plenty room for buggies. Staff were very helpful and friendly. I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a nice and relaxing place to meet up with Mummy friends for lunch or just a coffee. They have a large baby changing area too which is so hard to find in town. Chefs will happily make baby led weaning friendly foods.

We live almost next door and love to eat here. It is open to all, not just hotel guests. But the food, until recently, has been poor so we stopped going. But this year has seen a huge change! We decided to give it another try, and what a surprise. The menu is different every time we go (once a week), although I think it changes even more often than that. Always loaded with such great choices it's hard to make up your mind. Presented beautifully with very high quality ingredients. There are adventurous dishes, such as pigeon and venison, alongside more standard ones like fish, pork fillet, steak and chicken. All served with well-presented vegetables. Great for pre-theatre meals. We are really pleased to have this as one of our regular restaurants and totally recommend it.

What to say about this place. The new chefs have transformed this average diner into one of the best places to eat in Town. With the advantage of probably the best-located restaurant in Southend (views across the Thames, very close to the Cliffs Pavillion Theatre) and a reliable and charming waiting staff, all that was needed was a great chef, which they now have. I like the fact that the short menu changes weekly, and the chefs like to show off their range with Indonesian nights, Game Food nights, etc. My only thought is that it would be nice if it opened later, but as part of a Hotel, maybe 9pm is late enough for the Residents.

Decided to try this restaurant as we were going to the Cliff's. When we arrived we were the only diners but were soon joined by a few others. A very pleasant waitress showed us to the conservatory. We had a Tastecard so chose from the a la carte menu. The smoked duck starter was good and then we both had steak - one sirloin, one ribeye. Both were cooked as requested. We managed to squeeze in dessert. The sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream was lovely. This place isn't cheap but excellent value with the 50% discount with the Tastecard. They also do reasonably priced set menus. We would definitely return.

My husband and I do not like posh restaurants where the staff stand on ceremony and was almost expecting this when we made a spontaneous decision to eat at Lamplights simply because we had been walking for miles, were starving hungry and cold and it was the nearest place serving food. We were reasonably dressed but it wouldn't have mattered if we'd been wearing jeans and trainers, as other customers were. It was refreshing to be able to be comfortably casual in such lovely surroundings. We were greeted by a helpful, friendly waitress who seated us at a nice table by the window with a lovely view across the estuary. On returning with the menus, she didn't mind one bit when we asked if we could move to another table because we were already cold and the air conditioning wasn't helping. It had been quite warm earlier in the day, so it wasn't surprising the air conditioning was still on. She seated us at a secluded, romantic table away from the window, took our drinks order and returned quickly with them. The place was practically empty because it was somewhat early for dinner but this didn't detract from the lovely atmosphere of the place. The food was as excellent as the service, beautifully presented and great value for money. The arty presentation gave the impression there wasn't an awful lot of food on the plate but it was deceptive, in fact we had to leave some of the main course because we didn't want to be too full for dessert, which were small but incredibly rich and absolutely divine. We would definitely dine here again, on the off chance or a special occasion. Really impressed!

My husband and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and the meal really made it a special occasion. The food was well presented and very tasty. My husband very much enjoyed his burger and the fish I had was lovely. My starter was the smoked duck which was so delicious! My only criticism is the fact they don't do cocktails of any kind. Their bar staff could do with learning just a few basic key cocktails. The decoy is done to a very high standard and the views across the Estuary are amazing, especially on a sunny early summer evening.

I have dined at Lamplights brasserie many times over the years and have only ever had one bad meal there, but i have now had one of my best meals there. I dined there with my other half on a quiet December evening. The brasserie (like the hotel its situated in) has undergone an extensive refurbishment lately and it looked lovely and rather upmarket too. Anyway for starters i had prawns in a herb and butter sauce and its was my first time of eating prawns with their little beady eyes and tails so when the starter came to the table i was abit alarmed (i did wonder why the waiter brought me a finger bowl at first) but those prawns were DELICIOUS ! they were moist and meaty and tasted of fresh prawns and the herb sauce was delicious too. I could have quite happily ate another portion. My mains was steak, house chips, mushroom and the most delicious sauce i have ever had - port and stilton. I always seem to be on a long quest to find the perfect steak over the years and i think i may have found it, this steak was cooked to how i asked (medium rare) and was simply beautiful. my housechips came in one of those cute little metal containers with the handle and they were lovely as was my mushrooms. other half had lamb shank and mash which he really enjoyed, we couldnt find room for dessert but all i can say is a big WELL DONE to the chef as they was a truly top class and quality dinner i actually want to go back there and have it again really soon. Please read my review of the westcliff hotel to see my review of the breakfast and sunday lunch (they were really scrumptious too)

Had a very pleasant meal at Lamplights yesterday. Staff were very pleasant, venue was also very nice, some renovations going on at the moment but that didn't affect us at all. Food was nice, little over priced but we used our Gourmet Society Discount card which made it very reasonable. Food was nice but some of the dishes lacked a little "something" (thyme & lemon chicken, could have done with a little thyme & lemon butter maybe as it was a little dry, & the pumpkin & ginger cheesecake was VERY nice ,but the sauce could have done with a bit of a kick as (what I believe to be) pumpkin sauce was tasteless. All food presented very attractively. Hubby's lamb shank was really nice, with loads of lamb on the joint, but again the sauce could have done with being a little richer. Hope that doesn't sound too "moany" as it was a nice meal. Hope these couple of pointers are taken as constructive critique, not just a moany old crab having a go!

Booked this restaurant with a taste card, so the 50% of the food bill made it very good value. Had a table for 5.30, so restaurant was very quite. Was given a choice of tables, so chose one next to window overlooking the estuary. The very efficient and friendly waitress took our drinks order, and left us to peruse the menu. My wife chose the leek and potato soup which came with a piping hot roll, and she said was very nice, I had the fried whitebait, which was plentiful and also very tasty. We both chose the beer battered cod with chips, which was piping hot and very nice. Neither of us had room for a desert. After a short chat with the very friendly Polish waitress, we paid the bill and made the short walk to the Cliffs Pavillion. Even without a tastecard they have set menus with 2 courses for either £12.95 or £15.95 which looked very good value. I would certainly recommend this restaurant for an early evening meal prior to a concert/ show at the Cliffs.

My partner and I were after somewhere different to eat in Southend. We live in the town, and are currently struggling to find anywhere decent to eat.We found this with the Gourmet Society app, and with a whopping 50% off with the card we thought "Why not?!"The only stipulation with the offer is, you must call to make a reservation first. So called and spoke to an incredibly polite young lady who booked us in for 6pm.We often pop into the Westcliff Hotel for a wine or two pre-show in the bar, and love the atmosphere here. The staff are always friendly and attentive, and they have a good choice of wine, however we have never eaten in the restaurant before. We were greeted by a lovely girl, who sat us down promptly. She took our drinks orders and gave us time to peruse the menu.I get very excited about food! So always check our the menu on the website before I go anywhere, however, when the prices and menu on the website are completely different to the menu in the restaurant.I chose the mackerel pate to start and my partner had the duck terrine. Both were brought out promptly and were both ample and delicious. The salad was fresh and delicious. For the main, my partner went for Chicken Tikka Skewers which comes with large sweet potato chips and he chose the sauteed mushrooms as his "bit on the side". Huge portion size, well presented and according to him, scrumptious.I went for the rib eye steak - medium rare with house chips. This comes accompanied by a huge tomato and flat mushroom. Presented beautifully, and a lovely thick steak, but so so so disappointed that it was SO overdone to the point of chewy! Such a shame to ruin a good steak like that. However, I will say, of we hadn't been in a rush for the show at the Cliffs and had we had more time, I would have sent it back and I don't imagine it would have been a problem at all as the waitress was a star!Dessert - I had a rather bland custard tart, nothing to write home about at all. My partner thoroughly enjoyed his pecan pie, and I must admit, it looked wonderful.Overall, a very pleasant evening, lovely atmosphere, attentive staff, and such a bonus that it was 50% off with the Gourmet card. We were going to a show at Cliffs on a Tuesday evening and wanted a meal before the event. The restaurants next to the theatre were fully booked and the one in the Theatre had no reviews so I was reluctant to try it, plus the recommended one was a long walk down to the seafront area and it was a wet night. I thought this isn't good; the fish and chip shop was the only other option I could see. By chance we spotted the Westcliffe Hotel and the Lamplights Brasserie just up the road. I remembered it only had one review on Trip Advisor, but that review praised it so we took a chance. I’m glad we did because it was excellent. We got there 15 minutes before it opened but they made us feel welcome and we had a drink in the lounge bar while we waited. It has a nice bright dining area and the service is friendly and efficient. The food was all freshly cooked and very tasty. The vegetables were properly cooked “all dente” just as we like them. The stilton and apple salad starter was very good and the Fish Pie main course was really fresh and tasty with a nice cheesy mash topping. My "chefs special" Beef Stroganoff was also excellent with plentiful melt in your mouth pieces of meat. The side dish of vegetables was also well cooked. Both the food and drink prices are very reasonable (there was an excellent choice of two for 10 pounds from the main menu if you wanted). We will go back there for a meal during the day to enjoy the view across the estuary as well as the food. Sometimes its worth taking a chance and thanks to that one review we found a good place that saved our evening. Incidently, we also enjoyed the show as well !

this was our 2nd visit, the first time there were 23 of us and this time 32. food was a carvery which was very nice, plenty of really good fresh veg and 2 different meats. all freshly cooked and the best roast potatos i have had at any carvery.the staff are great and after our meal we always sit in the lounge and have pots of coffee and lavish amounts of alcohol. the children are catered for with a seperate menu or they can also have the carvery. there is a choice of either 1/2/3 courses including coffee and mints and they usually have a nice 2 piece band playing a bit of background jazz, the children love the it. the staff are very friendly & chatty and nothing is to much trouble, my only gripes on this visit would be that they ran out of turkey, not good really seeing as you have to book in advance so they know how many to cater for and 2nd we only had the one waitress so each table was served seperately and so while we were ordering our desert the rest of our group were finishing theirs or had already left the dining area. more staff would have been preferable.

Went for dinner and a drink yesterday and the service was great, the pub was full and just a great vibe all round. The guy that served us was very attentive and polite. The burger and the fish were lovely - we will certainly be returning.

We came in on Wednesday 16th, with a disabled young man. The meat was good, but Yorkshire puddings were rock hard. Full of air. The veg was overcooked the peas where like bullets. But I went into the ladies' toilets and how disgusting it was. The toilet brush was absolutely awful. If the toilet is like that, what is the kichen? I took a picture. Will show you!!! I wonder what the company would think if there had done an inspection?
