Whilst staying here on holiday at Hidden Valley we decided to book for Sunday lunch. Had a lovely plate full of roast beef and pork, roast potatoes, roast parsnips and carrots, green beans, cauliflower cheese, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding and plenty of nice rich gravy. It was lovely and hot, plus great friendly staff. Highly recommended.

We ordered 4 roast dinners (only option on a Sunday) but the beef was overcooked and chewy. You couldn’t even cut it up without difficulty. Service was ok, but no smiles. No apologies or discount offered when all plates were collected with beef left and we gave our feedback. A lovely setting but that was it.

We looked up the menu on e-mail and we liked what we saw So we booked table. When we got there all they had was pizza. If we wanted pizza we would have go to Pizza Hut in Barnstaple. If you want a good night out with good food and service I would advice that you do not go to Lakeside

Arrived at campsite Saturday. Had the most amazing pizzas Saturday night. Didn’t fancy a roast on Sunday as it was such a warm day. We were aware the restaurant was closed on Monday and Tuesday but, sadly it hasn’t been open for food since! I was told that the owners are cooking so they will just decide on the day. Had to go back out to get a takeaway and still have no idea if it will be open tomorrow 🤷🏼‍♀️. Just have to wait and see I suppose

My wife and I recentlyhad a Sunday lunch at the Lakeside restaurant. It was a very hot day and we ate our meal outside. We were served by Jess, who is an excellent waitress. Nothing was too much trouble for her. She was very helpful and polite. The meal itself was cooked to a very high standard. When we are in the area again we will definitely eat there again. Others have mentioned the location as being wonderful and it certainly is I think that it is two years since my last visit and nothing has changed. Others have rated the food as being "over-priced and basic" and that sums it up fairly succinctly. I asked my Grandchildren if they wanted Dessert and my Son in law took the menu and said "Not at £5 for a bit of ice cream, they don't! - which summed it rather well

We have stayed a few times over the years at this caravan site and had taken the kids several times for a meal. Every time the place looks more like a scout hut or working man's club (nothing wrong with that if that's what it is, but it's not), and the carpet & tables were sticky. We also had a fine display of dead flys and wasps on the window ledges. Food was OK and basic, but overpriced.

Ordered a vegetarian option for the carvery lunch and was presented with 3 vegetarian budget sausages and a Yorkshire pudding in a dinner plate. Vegetables were served up in bowls so you could help yourself and roast potatoes were the same. I personally found that the roast potatoes were undercooked and the sausages which I have never been presented with for a carvery lunch were disgusting .

What can go wrong with ham, egg and chips? To summarise: two thin slices of tasteless, packet ham, two small (cold) fried eggs, and about a dozen oven chips, for which we paid £8.95. One of us had the "homemade" banoffi pie, which was a tiny slice, consisting of possibly two mouthfuls, and this was charged at £5.50. Complete and utter waste of money, and I went home starving. We have just returned from a weekend at the Hidden Valley Campsite with the Motorcaravanners Club. The organisers asked if we would like to have Sunday Lunch in the restaurant. As the A-board at the entrance was advertising Turkey, Beef, Pork and Lamb we said yes because my wife only really likes Turkey, and a table was booked for us all for 12.30pm. We arrived at about 12.32pm to find that there was no room on the group table so had to sit on a separate table, which was OK. Unfortunately the only meats available were Beef and Pork. The main tables meals were served but nothing arrived for us. A member of our party then came and told us that our meals had been served to the main table, he had tried to tell the manageress that we were sat at a different table but she wouldn't listen. I then called the manageress (Betty) over to ask where our meals were. She said that she had made the decision to serve the main table first and the smaller tables would be served after. She then added that we were late arriving anyway. What happened to customer service. During the meal the waitress came and asked if we were OK, my wife said she thought that the manageress had been very rude to us. She apologised and went and told the manageress who just smirked at us. My meal of Beef was OK but the Pork my wife ordered was very fatty. This was a very disappointing end to what had been a very pleasant weekend. When we went to pay, the manageress was preparing deserts and ignored us, when she did acknowledge us she tried to charge us for drinks from another customer. We won't be returning to the Hidden Valley Restaurant again.

The food is perfectly acceptable and the prices charged were both fair and sensible. The patience displayed by the Staff to small children was remarkable and I would particularly like to commend "Betty" for her work. The Lakeside is a small restaurant overlooking a beautiful Lake. There are a number of fine Rhododendron and Hydrangeas which look splendid in Season. The Restaurant is sited at the Hidden Valley campsite and although the main Barnstaple to Ilfracombe road (A361) runs right outside there is no intrusion of traffic noise. There is an area for people who have their dogs with them but it is not in the main restaurant. This may be just as well as dogs are not, at least generally in the UK, seen in restaurants unlike France.

We had passed The Lakeside a few times while out and about in the car and was really looking forward to having a meal there as it said dog friendly and food looked nice on photos however when we got there we were very disappointed to find that even though it says dog friendly and we had our two small dogs with us there was only a very small bar area with a few tables which were already taken by people who hadn't got dogs with them so they could have sat in the restaurant area which wasn't busy?? The lady behind the bar said we had to sort our own table out so not the most friendly welcome so we managed to get the only table left and sort our own chairs round it. After about ten minutes there seemed to be an altercation with a couple who were sitting behind us and the waitress and became very awkward so we finished our drinks and decided to leave. We couldn't sit outside as it hadn't been a very good day whether wise so all in all really disappointed.

We went inside to order lunch at 12.45 to be told that the staff were just about to have their full English breakfast so we would have to wait!! At 1pm we ordered. Although they have a breakfast menu on show it is not available except for a group who come once a month!!! The staff are obviously an exception. We ordered Welsh Rarebit. It was a slice of toast covered in a group which tasted like a good half a cup of cinnamon paste with a small amount of eggy cheese grilled on top. I was told it was from an original old recipe and I was clever to have spotted the cinnamon!!!! If we hadn't laughed so much we would have cried. We will not be going back EVER.

We stayed at the Hidden Valley Campsite, which is where this restaurant is situated, and The Lakeside, really made our whole holiday so good. The welcome and service is amazing, and although we were only there for 4 nights, by the time we left we felt like we had been going there for years. Our 6 yr old Son Max loved going there as much as we did, and he was really upset to leave. Although he did promise Betty that we will go back next year, and we certainly will. Everyone else there seemed to be treated in the same way, which was great to see. The food was very good indeed, it was straight forward, honest food, cooked really well. It was great value, and the breakfast was also a delight. There were 3 drink son draft: San Miguel, Tribute (Somerset Pale ale) and Thatchers Gold cider. This was a great selection for such a small place, and I kept on changing my drink, which is most unlike me. I also thought that for a captive market, that £3.90 per pint is very reasonable. As for the comment further down about the half pint prices - that's just economy of scale, and nothing peculiar to this venue. All in all Betty should be very proud about the experience that she and her team deliver at the Lakeside, and we can't wait to return next year!!

Just got home after a lovely weeks camping at Hidden Valley. The campsite and the staff were great and whilst it was the normal UK mixed weather, we made it to the beach most days. This review is really about the Lakeside Restaurant which I believe is under different ownership than the campsite. We ate at the restaurant on four different occasions and the food was generally excellent. The reason for my low score on review was my experience on our final visit. We had eaten dinner and my partner decided he wanted another pint. I didn't want another pint so just had a half. When I went to pay the bill, I was watching as the items were rung into the till and noticed a half pint was £2.50. I asked how much a pint was, assuming it would be £5.00, expensive but ok, and was confused when I was told a pint was £3.80. Even with my abysmal maths, that makes a half £1.90.I queried why I would pay an extra 60p for a half and was told that the price was clearly shown on the menu, which in fairness it was, but the menus are whipped away once you have ordered. I was then told that the incremental pricing was due to VAT and having to wash up the glasses. As I walked away, I said it was a shame as the food had always been excellent but I now felt like customers, who wouldn't want a pint are being penalised (ripped off), and that I would put something on the website. As I walked back to the table the barmaid began yelling at me across a fairly full restaurant that the price was on the menu and that there was no need to put anything on the website, which seemed an extreme reaction to customer feedback. In the tirade, I was also told that they were cheaper than any of the surrounding pubs - hard to believe if you have a pint in two halves that costs you £5. My advice, go eat there - the food is good, but if you only drink halves, either don't bother or buy a pint to share with someone else and take 2 straws! Myself, I'll be back at Hidden Valley but I'll give the Lakeside Restaurant a miss.

Only 1 other table occupied in the restaurant so atmosphere was lacking and staff can't complain they were too busy. Our party arrived at different times and attempts to place a starter order by the first people to arrive were ignored. Waitress made mistake on order which should have been obvious as she had noted down 9 dinners for 8 people but she still tried to say it wasn't her mistake. Food didn't arrive at the table until an hr after everyone had arrived and an hr and a half after initial part of party. Bill was a one line total with no breakdown of items so suspect we were overcharged. Food was generally ok but can't say better than that and the lasagne was over cooked and tasted like a pre-prepared microwave meal. Waitress asked if everything was ok then turned and walked away without a word when I mentioned my lasagne was overlooked.

Betty made us feel more than welcome, on every visit even remembering our drinks (no ice). Food was excellent even encouraged to try different meals on the menu, good honest opinion given on desserts aswell. If just passing stop by for a cream tea, gorgeous to say the least.

We regularly stay at Hidden Valley and have visited the Resteraunt a couple of times since it opened last year. Whilst agreeing that the Lake could be more picturesque if all the floating weed as removed, this by no means deters from the woodland and rustic feel of the surroundings. Our experience of the resteraunt food was very good, especially having tried the Pork in Brown Sauce on my latest visit (chefs speciality), delicious !The girl at front of house is always helpful and attentive to our needs and though we have yet to try the Sunday Roast, everyone we have spoken to have said how good it is.Maybe on our next trip in July we will see for ourselves.

Hmmm!!!Was expecting so much because of the advertising on local radio.Disappointing would just about cover it. The place had the atmosphere of a doctors waiting room.We were the only people there. The girl behind the bar was helpful, the coffee and the sweets we ordered were passable, cleanliness was good, toilets had a light with a detector on it so you had to go into a black hole before it came on.The lakeside walk took us past rows of stored caravans which obviously hadn't been moved for months, some of them for years. The farm across the main road looked as if in had survived an explosion.Cannot see me either going there again or recommending the place..

This was a tired site in need of some TCL.The location had so much potential but didn't live up to our expectations or indeed the photos. The lake and surrounding area was sadly neglected...discarded grass cuttings, weed dragged from the lake and left in piles, rusting/rotten benches etc. It was oddly quiet for a bank holiday weekend, unlike other sites nearby which were fully booked. For us the biggest disappointment was the on site restaurant, be careful what you order. My other half had gammon and chips tasty but overpriced, l had a cheeseburger which was undercooked and lukewarm in the middle. I politely asked if the burger could be cooked a little longer and the bar maid happily took it to the kitchen. Minutes later the cook came to our table with my burger and a packet of two raw ones which she proceeded to poke with her bare hands whilst telling me the burgers were from a butcher and no matter how long she cooked them they would always be pink in the middle and it was safe to eat. By this time my burger was stone cold and had been handled by the cook with hands that had touched raw meat. I have a child with allergies and have always made my own burgers and over the past 15 years always cooked them with no pink/ raw meat in the middle ....it's not rocket science. This lady left me feeling embarrassed and hungry, why did she did to humiliate me?

We are local and used to go for lunch at Hidden Valley years ago when an excellent chef used to cook there. It unfortunately went downhill when it changed hands and we stopped going. Recently we noticed a board at the entrance again advertising Sunday lunch as we thought we would give it another try. We always liked the environment there and the current owners do appear to have done some work to upgrade the restaurant. However, the Sunday lunch was very poor and we will not be going back again. When we asked the waitress whether the beef was rare or well done, she said "I don't know, I'm a vegetarian"! She seemed reluctant to ask but did eventually return to say it was "medium". We both ordered the roast beef at £8.95 each. When the meal came, there was one small slice of beef on the plate and it was actually over-cooked - certainly nowhere near "medium"! The portion of meat was exceedingly mean for that price. Dishes of vegetables were brought to the table; the green beans and sprouts were overcooked and we thought probably frozen, the cauliflower was overcooked and pappy. The gravy was from a packet. There was no sparkling mineral water available, the only option was soda water. We won't go back which is sad as we are always looking for nice places to eat locally that are good value. This certainly isn't.I'm sure it is a lovely site to stay on, but my advice would be to go out for Sunday lunch - there are SO many better roasts within just few miles for the same price or cheaper! Try the Aggi in Braunton or for only another pound go to the Williams Arms - you won't be sorry!

What a gem of a find. Lovely quirky little pub. My wife is a coeliac, and most of the main courses on the menu were gluten free. Delicious food, very friendly staff. We had the added bonus that the local folk band were practicing, so great food, nice chilled music & lovely surroundings. Definitely a 10/10.

Bad first (not that bad ..😆) A bit old and dated, dispite the newish tile panelling Batter was nice but a little oily on the fish (soaked into the batter) The good.. HUGE battered fish - (suggest you just get the small one) cooked perfectly Sirloin steak was tender and cooked perfectly (ordered medium) I was pleasantly surprised on the quality, as it's a basic takeaway with a restaurant attached and it was under £20, so no top steak restaurant - but kudos to the chef, best £20 steak I've had, and better than some classier $$$$ places I've been, For that £20 I also got onion rings (perfect), salad - quality greens, few cut up bits of capsicum a couple of mushrooms, tomato, fried tomato too and plenty of chips cooked perfectly and very nice. (but best chips in UK I've had is at Lochgilphead - Scotland) Constructive criticism only - I was VERY happy given the price, Way better than a lot of places I've been to so far in the UK, and would definitely eat the same dishes again. Staff were friendly... This is at the end of the tourist season too. (Oct'24)

Me & my partner came here on 5/9/24 on a very rainy day. We both grabbed a little drink and a treat here and relaxed in the lovely cafe after a long wet walk from Croyde bay. The staff here were wonderful and all really lovely! The millionaires shortbread was the best I’ve ever had and the cheesy chips were delicious! There is a wide variety of drinks to choose from, both hot and cold. Really lovely vibes and will definitely come here again!

Location wise excellent. Unfortunately, this tired old looking pub has definitely seen better days! Need of major investment, but it would definitely be worth it. Years ago, this pub was full of customers all of the time.

One of the best Sunday carveries that we have experienced, with a wide range of vegetables & meat; welcoming staff, especially Kim & Wendy, nothing was too much bother
