La Orient in Elmbridge

LaOrient is an absolute gem! From the moment we arrived, John the host made us feel right at home. He’s incredibly friendly, attentive, and clearly loves making sure everyone has a great experience – the service is genuinely second to none. We had the Wesley set menu, which was fantastic value. It includes a choice of 5 starters and 3 mains from a great selection, plus a duck course served between courses – a really nice touch! Everything was delicious, but the standout for me was the salt & chilli chicken and chicken curry – packed with flavour and just the right amount of kick (be warned, it’s got a little heat!). We left full and happy, and John kindly offered us takeaway tubs for the bits we couldn’t quite manage. We’ll 100% be back again soon – and next time we’re bringing friends. Highly recommend if you’re in the Fareham area!

Lies lies lies .first deliveroo promised to deliver food then restaurant promised to deliver food after waiting 1.5 hours then received a call telling me it had been delivered lies lie lies then a call to say sorry food won't be arriving .what kind of service and behaviour is that to a long serving customer . If I treated my customers like that I would not have a business for long .shame on you I hope your restaurant fails

Four of us ate in the restaurant yesterday. John is a great host, very welcoming and friendly. The food was lovely, large portions and beautifully cooked and presented.

Always incredible food for a really good price! I really love this place, it is a blessing to have such high quality gluten free food close to home. The crispy shredded chicken and the sweet and sour chicken are so so good, and the service is exemplary!

We arrived for dinner as a group with mixed requests for different types of food and not sure what to have. Jon was amazing suggesting a varied menu we all loved the lemon chicken was devine, the sweet and sour tasty and embellished with Strawberries which matched perfectly. We had a wonderful evening with fantastic food. I would heartily recommend you give this place a try.

We are new to the area and this restaurant was recommended to us. We ordered a takeaway this evening. I have to say, this was the nicest, tastiest Chinese meal I have ever eaten....no gloopy msg based sauces, lots of fresh vegetables and every dish had a distinct and different flavour of its own. The only minor complaint from those that had them was that the peking ribs were tough and chewy, but this didn't take away from the over all quality and value for money. We will definitely be ordering from here again, and look forward to booking a table for an eat in experience.

We had our first visit since before covid on Friday, the food is still excellent and the new decor is very good. The staff and owner were really friendly and helpful. My wife was also impressed with the variety of teas on offer. All the dishes were well cooked and presented, and the generous portion sizes had us taking doggie bags home, too. We will definitely be going back.

We came here years ago on a visit to fareham, and the food was very good then. We decided to come back to try it again and the restaurant has had a full make over, the food was absolutely outstanding, the staff and owner were great people too. Thank you for a great meal and we will definitely be back. One of the best Chinese meals we have had.

Gorgeous food in a very friendly atmosphere I highly recommend a visit

The only problem with this restaurant was it’s too far away from me. I live nr Manchester and was visiting family hence the visit. I’m no Chinese cuisine connoisseur but I do frequent Chinatown in Manchester and La Orient was some of the best food I’ve ever tasted. From the dim sum starter including their special prawn balls, to the ribs and the crispy duck, everything was quality. Every main dish including prawn kung po to the crispy chilli beef was polished off by all of us, and best of all, it’s owned and run by a lovely family who are warm and hospitable. Can’t fault it, 5* throughout and the only complaint is I’m too far away to enjoy it more often!

From the moment we walked in everything about the place was impeccable. Fantastic personalised service, every item of food was just perfect, right down to the drinks and dessert. Even the kitchen staff came out to check how the food was, extremely friendly service, couldn't find fault in a single thing.

I’m still in the restaurant while I’m writing this because it is simply the best chinese I have ever eaten!! The presentation, the plates/bowls used are so beautiful and unique! The owner and staff are just wonderful, polite, welcoming and very kind! This is a must, how I’ve not been here before is beyond me! Very reasonable priced for such fresh food. We will be coming back!!

Had 2 takeaway collections for the past 2 weeks now and both have been exceptional.

I came here with my boyfriend for our anniversary dinner and we had a lovely evening in this local family-run restaurant. The food was beautifully presented and was served piping hot straight from the kitchen. We had a selection of dim sum and prawn toast for starters, which really hit the spot. The chilli beef was the highlight for us! One of the best things about supporting local businesses is the people; the owner John is super friendly and attentive all the way through our meal. The barman even treated us to some Japanese plum wine and we were able to select our own cups, which was a nice touch! I would highly recommend this place and will definitely come back again.

The restaurant has been shut for years but after a total refurb has now reopened, it’s totally family run now from front of door to kitchen. I was so pleased it reopened as I used to live going to the restaurant years ago, the return is excellent, service with a smile and food best expectations, we had a mixed starter, very generous portion sizes, then duck followed by main course, struggled to eat it all (certainly won’t go hungry here) The ribs were done in a honey sauce which I’ve never had before but will definitely have again. Another great thing was not being rushed, perfect amount of time between courses made for a great evening out. If you get a chance try this family run restaurant you won’t regret it

We are so pleased to see our favourite restaurant back in business again. We've celebrated so many occasions at La Orient with our family and friends, so it was great to see John and his family back in business. The refurbishment is impressive and the food was excellent as usual. John is and always has been a great host. Thank you for a wonderful evening and especially for catering for the vegan in our group, the food was delicious.

Had a fantastic Chinese here Friday evening. Service was excellent, friendly and very entertaining. The menu may be small or reduced compared to your typical Chinese menu, but what that ensures that the quality of each dish is bang on. The ribs we had for starters were great, the steamed pork dumplings with their home made chilli oil dip were excellent. The salt and peppercorn chicken wings were some of the best I've had. All the mains were great, their black bean sauce is amazing, the sweet and sour was delicious, the portions were generous, so much so we had to ask for take away containers because it would have been a crime to waste the leftovers! Thoroughly recommend, it's hard to find a decent Chinese restaurant, this is right up there for me as one of the best around.

Moved to the area nearly 3 years ago and by far the best place for Chinese around. Been to the restaurant twice since the re opening and the food is superb, even my 8 year old who is very fussy and not one for Chinese food enjoyed it so much she wants to go back for her 9th birthday. Food was amazing, full of flavour, big portions to the point we had to take the rest home between 3 of us and the staff lovely as always. Thank you so much ❤️

I've always enjoyed the dishes we receive, but the last few times I've ordered one or more dishes have been substituted or completely missed out. The first couple of times I gave them the benefit of the doubt but when it happened yet again in October - and they have not responded to the email I sent after more than 2 months - I have reluctantly decided to stop using them. They never provide refunds for missing items.

Order took way too long the driver did apologise, when it came one of the items was wrong food was tasteless cold and probably the worst Chinese takeaway we've had would of sent it back but we'd waited long enough for food.

Every time I order through just eat they promise within 1 hour and it’s often nearly 2 hours u tip delivery, the last three times I’ve had to chase them for an update and eaten late in the evening. Poor service.

Having recently moved to the area this was my first and last take away from La Orient. This is an objective review of my experience. I ordered direct via La Orient website one hour before delivery was requested. My food was 30 minutes late and not my order. On phoning La Orient they were able to redirect the driver to bring my food and take whoevers food I had to them. To be honest this wasn't a big issue - mistakes happen. However what was an issue was the standard of the dishes I ordered; which were S&S Chicken Hong Kong Style, Plain Chow Mein, Chips and Soup. None of the food was hot. The S&S Chicken was bitter - the chicken was chewy The Plain Chow Mein was dry and claggy with no taste - not something I have experienced before The Chips were a bizarre texture very dry and chewy as if they had been reheated - they were pretty inedible Normally I would keep the left overs for another day, the reality I did not eat what was on my plate and along with the leftovers have all been binned. I may has well got £18 and set fire to it. To the owners I would say, if you are going to offer this cuisine please offer a quality of food that stops reviews like this. It has given me no pleasure to write it, I would rather have had delicious food.

This place ruined mine & my sons Christmas. We both had the sweet & sour chicken Hong style & spent all night & next day throwing up. The stomach pains were horrendous which make me think it's food poisoning. Also our food was late & when we called the woman had no clue what we ordered. If I have my way,this place will be shut down. A huge disgrace....

Not a proper Chinese. Rice was hard and boiled. Veg hard. Tasteless will never order again. It's more like English food not Chinese. Even my wife could cook this and she's an awful cook.

seriously i don't understand why this place is so highly rated, this place is the Damien Hirst of the cuisine world.If you want awful Chinese curry with a hint of a metallic taste then happily go here. For people who want great food go to the golden boat in Portchester. No man should ever suffer the meal i embraced with my family this evening. The chicken curry has a rust taste (not tangy, metallic!!!) to replicate the same experience: put some fairy liquid onto a plate then dip your tongue in it. Now if your wondering why i gave it a one star its because the rice was good, but how can you fail rice? this is the bare minimum of Chinese and all the family's that love this are probably mental handicapped (but are also more obviously more handicapped in their taste buds)

Really bad experience tonight, waited over an hour and a half for our food which was warm at best and extremely bland, very overpriced aswell for what we received. You expect a certain standard when you order a Chinese and this was well below that standard. Will never be ordering again from here, 4 small pieces of prawn toast for a fiver is a robbery too!

Only Chinese food place I've tried since moving to the UK and I'm impressed so far. It's pricey, but the food I bought yesterday has lasted 3 meals, so it's worth it in my opinion. I'll be going back at some point.

Don't like leaving bad reviews at this hard time but although the food was delivered promptly it was of poor quality the rice noodles were over cooked or microwaved, the chow mein was bland and was filled with onion as were all the dishes and that's all you could taste, the kung po was so bad it was like a sweet and sour and no cashew nuts. Unfortunately 75% of all the food went IN THE BIN and they certainly weren't cheap, never eating from there again lots of better places in Fareham

The best Chinese restaurant around, a great menu with plenty of choice for everyone, all cooked fresh to order and definitely worth the wait on busier nights

After a riveting morning of work meetings - during which, I could barely hear a dicky-bird, due to a terrible ear infection overnight, I headed for a pub. (I had got tired of colleagues recreating scenes from Fawlty Towers’ ‘Communication Problems’ episode).Severe dizziness, and imbalance (not from the alcohol) lead me to leave the pub earlier than intended......and head for this fine venue to procure a takeaway This has always been my favourite Chinese in Esher. Food is consistently decent, service good, and food cooked speedily.Deciding I was once again, ‘worth eeet’, quoting the great sage that was L’Oreal, I decided to spoil myself rotten.As Alan Partridge once said - ‘Ruddy Hell.....it’s Soft Shell Crab’ (Soft Cell), which I did, in fact, opt for as one of a duo of Starters.....along with Satay Prawns....Both starters were supremely delicious and cooked to perfection!Main of Mussels in a Black Bean Sauce was a winner! Delicious mussels in a great sauce.Vegetarian Noodle accompaniment - fantastic and excellent.Fortunately, whilst binge rewatching the superb ‘Friday Night Lights’, I was, indeed, so very grateful there were English subtitles, rather than Tagalog, Icelandic, or Turkmen. Excellent takeaway, as always

Waited over 2.5 hours for delivery and food delivered cold. No answer on phone. No refund given. Poor service and rubbish food.

Had excellent meal delivered from here this evening. Have had meals from La Orient from time to time, and they have always been of a really high standard - far above average I would say.

My family's favourite place to eat, great service, extremely friendly workers and overall 10/10 Chinese food.

This was our first visit to the LA Orient on 8th of February, very busy we all had the set meal at around £24.99 each, the starters came out in good time, then we had crispy duck,the service was slow waited some time and then we had the main dishes. However we must have waited about 40 minutes, we were not to pleased and then informed that they had a few staff off sick. We received the the food after a further 10 minute and it was great. We would return again but will check they are able to deliver a better service next time.

The secret is to go early, we always go now at 6.30pm as by 8 o'clock it is rammed and then the service slips. One of the problems they have these days is the amount to take away thy do as it seems to swamp the kitchen!

I have been going to La Orient for many years with my family and really like the place, however on our last visit there was a bald Chinese guy working there who was just so rude and unhelpful. I can't remember seeing a more miserable person serving in a restaurant. Such a shame as all of the other staff are lovely.

Very disappointed. Delivery took an hour and a half and the food was way below par. Incredibly oily and greasy, chicken balls nearly broke my teeth, they were that hard and crunchy. My dog even refused to eat them. Some people might like this place, but not for me. Would have complained and asked for the dishes to be re done, but couldn't be bothered with the wait.

We visited there a couple of months ago..the place is a mess due to them having a 're-fit'..whilst waiting for the food there was a smell which I can only describe at cat urine and unfortunately the food smelt the same..we won't be visiting again

Well maybe we were unlucky on our last visit to this restaurant? But, dear reader it was not much better on a recent visit, well the service was slightly improved, but they appeared not to care. That must have been because the food had not improved at all! Nort sure what has happened, as in previous visits it was a place to eat, not anywhere near the standard of the Good Earth, but cheap and edible. No longer, so we will not return.

Food OK at best. Service? Seemed like an issue for one very surly waitress. Food came out sporadically, drink service had to be hunted for & I really didn't enjoy the experience. They charge top prices as in Esher, best they up their game as this was pretty awful compared to Good Earth, which is more expensive, has better food & service. I won't repeat going here.

The food was ‘ok’. Not outstanding for the price. The worst thing about the visit was the service, incredibly poor and unfriendly staff who made us feel unwelcome on a special family event. Wouldn’t come again.

After a hellishly long day, in London, I decided I wanted a copious amount of alone time, back in my lair, so as to re-watch ‘Whiplash’ and The Usual Suspects.’I could not be bothered to cook for myself, so I opted to get a takeaway from this venue.Food is always very consistent and decent here - the service is quick, staff fine - ergo, very reliable.Ordered a selection of starters - sesame prawn on toast, vegetarian spring rolls along with a main of vegetarian noodles.All the food was very enjoyable.I’d say - there is very little difference in standard between here and the incredibly expensive ‘Good Earth’ which is also on the High Street in Esher.

The food here is fine BUT they have a major service issue. The restaurant is clearly focussed on takeaways and gives these priority-- so, in our case, the service was erratic (missing a starter) and we had to leave without a main course an hour and a half after we arrived and after a lot of chasing.

We forgot to book but they squeezed us in on a really busy Friday evening. Excellent service and fabulous food. Lovely spices and beautifully cooked scallops. No complaints from me. Loved it.

Horrible experience,you feel like your in north Korea. You are not allowed to laugh, children are not allowed to talk at all. Lady at the counter is like Kim joung in. Always looking at your table. I feel sorry for the staff working there. Good night be testy but after looking at the counter Kim joung it won't be. Miserable piece of s***t.

Great food, great flavours, lovely staff! Sadly theyre renovating at the moment so can't have a sit down meal but take away was delicious!

Have eaten here twice and on each occasion the food and service was very good. Theres not a lot of food but then again its not that expensive so an extra dish or two won't break the bank. The decor and lighting is a bit dated and reminds of places I ate in whilst Hong Kong twenty years ago, not being very nostalgic I would prefer it a bit more modern (Orient Wardour Street?) and even though I'm local this does restrict my visits there.

Offers a great range of food, service quick in time for the cinema. Definitely recommend the deep fried salt and pepper aubergine, sooo good. 😋

Whenever we go to Esher and fancy a Chinese Meal this is our preferred stop. Nice food, good service, reasonably priced. What more do you need?

With two young children in tow for their first Chinese meal the restaurant could not have been more charming, accommodating and helpful. Kids can’t wait to go back.

We often go there for lunch with children. The prices are moderate. The quality of ingredients is superb.

We were astonished to order a simple mixed veggie dish - it came on side plate and both me and my husband were able to just have ONE scoop each. We ordered a couple of shrimp dishes which were on the small side too (but expected for shrimp). Rice portions are TINY so you will have to order one order of rice per person. We are slim people, ordered three main dishes between us plus rice and drinks, and still left hungry - this can't be right. In addition, all the mains came out in 5 mins after ordering (we came to dine, not have fast food and leave in a hurry), dishes clearly microwaved...

Good long-standing Chinese restaurant in the middle of Esher High Street. Parking is available to the rear in the Elmbridge Council Car Park. This restaurant competes with the Good Earth Chinese Restaurant a 100 yards away on the other side of the High Street.

Ordered a takeaway last night haven’t had one for a while, beef & duck was crispy and can’t fault the other dishes, food was also hot on arrival lovely end to a day in the sun, thank you La Orient
