La Fleur de Lys in North Dorset

Our first time at The Fleur De Lys for dinner. From the moment we set foot in this small hotel, all was perfect. We were shown to the bar where we had aperitifs, then to our table . We all had different starters and mains; all were absolutely delicious and beautifully presented! The service and atmosphere was low key yet excellent. This was our first time at The Fleur De Lys and certainly not the last! well done!

The booking for the mid-week evening meal for 2 was made via e-mail conversations, direct with the hotel, and proved to be quick, easy and efficient. It is suggested that no matter when you are going that a reservation is made in advance to ensure you get a table. The restaurant is situated close to the centre of Shaftesbury on the B3091 (Bleke St) and has a small free car park for those who are driving, with additional public car parks within easy walking distance. The restaurant is situated in the basement of the House and is where the heritage of the historic mansion really comes into its own. It has a cosy ambience with original vaulted archways made from traditional Bath stone adding to the intimate feel, plus plenty of tables overlooking a secluded woodland scene and countryside beyond. On arrival we were greeted and shown to a small bar area for pre-dinner drinks and nibbles whilst choosing our menu choices. The ambiance of this room and the small room where we ate was entirely in keeping with the fine dining experience we were to enjoy. The service provided throughout was impeccable, well-informed and quite polite. The evening menu has a choice of 2 or 3 courses and is a diverse mix of seasonal dishes, classic flavours and firm favourites, there being something to suit almost all. The drinks and wine menu are equally diverse and not overpriced All dishes are made from scratch, featuring, where possible, seasonal and local ingredients cooked fresh to order. Well worth the wait as they were excellent quality, well presented to a high standard (compliments to the chef on this). Portions are slightly on the small side, but each dish was a creation with pleasant groupings of textures and tastes. We chose the 3-course menu and besides the amuse-bouches (which was delightful) items of special note from our chosen dishes included the main of ‘Saddle of Dorset Lamb’ and the desert of a ‘Dark Chocolate Box’. I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant and would use it again should we be in the area – well worth it from our point of view, in very pleasant settings and definitely a ‘Fine Dining’ restaurant.

An excellent restaurant for a special meal in Shaftesbury. The menu offers a good choice of mains, and the Creme Brulee with raisins and Calvados was great. We stayed overnight in lovely rooms, with good service. Very high standards and a great place to stay on route to Cornwall.

Appalling owner. We booked a Mothers Day meal for myself, husband and 3 children. They had no children’s menu so we fed the children from our plates, when the bill was brought out they had charged us £10 each child for the use of a chair, no explanation, nothing to advise this was what they were doing. The owner was incredibly rude and condescending, ruined an average meal.

friendly place. Good food. worth a visit. 12 years since last visit but food excellent, choice on menu good. Wine excellent and reasonably priced. Service is up to you and they were worth a contribution. £39 for 2 courses very fair but £13 more for a dessert seemed slightly overmuch although the lemon beignets were excellent. Won't wait anither 12 years to visit.

Yet again a fantastic meal! The service is exceptional and the overall experience is great. Food is 10/10. A place I will always recommend. Looking forward to a return later in the year. Thank you all!

I stayed there on the 12/12/2023. The hotel itself is fine and the room is very comfortable. Breakfast is also quite good. But this is the thing, I forgot my vanity case didn’t realise till I was about to make my next trip on 1/1/ 2024 called the hotel and they told me the wife had the case and tried to call me she couldn’t get through so she put it in the bin. The vanity case and contents was worth more than £400. I really don’t know what to say.

Very highly recommended. A delicious Christmas Day dinner from the Christmas Meal at Home menu. A Takeaway with a difference. This is our 6th Meal at Home and it has never disappointed. The presentation of the dishes in the basket was thoughtfully done, accompanied by reheating instructions, crackers, tree decorations and a Christmas card. The food was attractively served in the microwaveable dishes, so we had to be careful in moving them into overproof dishes as we didn't use the microwave. The crab and haddock chowder was silky and delicious, and the little home-made dough balls a delight. Our turkey, vegetables and trimmings were all excellent, despite its being not easy to reheat a main course without spoiling it - very brave of you to entrust this to someone at home! Christmas puddings were perfect, with a delicate brandy sauce that set them off nicely. Portions the right size for this type of meal. We succumbed to temptation and ate the mince pies on Christmas Eve! The pastry was light and just the right amount of crumbliness.

We had the pleasure of dining in this beautiful restaurant and it certainly met our expectations (and some) … the food was incredible … especially the grapefruit marinated salmon & lobster … the service was perfection as well … and the environment was so relaxing and inviting … we all throughly enjoyed our evening here and hope to return again at some point … it was everything we hoped it would be … thank-you so much for the most perfect experience … and keep doing what your doing as it’s the best!!!

Food was stunning and had no issues. I had Dover sole and was just perfect. My wife had aged beef which was melt in the mouth.

I was invited here for a birthday meal having grown up in Shaftesbury it was great to go back. We read the menu on line and I was looking forward to our evening as we literally liked everything on the menu from front to back cover. We were greeted at the door by what i believe was the head chef and co owner and it was a very warm welcome and made us very relaxed. The drinks and nibbles before we went to the table were a great touch. Now the meal service and presentation were just another level as was the food itself and I don’t say that lightly as you will see in our reviews we have been lucky enough to have traveled the world and eaten in some fantastic and not so good places. The staff and wife(co owner) of the head chef was great to talk to and fully understands customer care,service and satisfaction. I am so pleased we ate here and are going to return soon. Having put their name in to Trip Advisor and found them at no1 we were not surprised and totally deserved by them well done and thank you…❤️

Faultless service, food and wine. A wonderful evening. We had fantastic starters of crab cakes with roasted scallops and the smoked duck. Mains were the sole and the beef. Dessert consisted of the soufflé and the chocolate box. Each were sublime. The wine list is extensive and reasonable with a great choice including half bottles. The service was attentive yet subtle and we were not rushed at any point. It really was an evening to remember.

This is a charming hotel which is run by a friendly and engaging couple. I chose to stay here because of its excellent reputation as a restaurant and the food and service lived up to that reputation. I stayed on my own for 2 nights and suspect that is why I was given the room with a window that faces a brick wall. It was small but comfortably appointed.🥲 . Avoid the “Sauvignon” room if possible. A charming hotel conveniently on the edge of town which I plan to stay at again.

This is a longstanding fine dining establishment with a well deserved reputation for excellence. We were welcomed with drinks and nibbles in the lounge bar and selected our meals from an extensive and thoughtful menu, before being shown to our table.. All our meals were cooked perfectly and accompanied by appropriate side dishes. It’s a long time since we encountered fine dining and this dinner made us aware of what we are missing. Thank you to the owners who gave us this memorable meal. You obviously care immensely about your craft.

From our arrival with a warm welcome and detailed explanation of the workings of the room and keys etc A lovely walk and exploration of what Shaftesbury had to offer.. the returned for the magic. On arrival downstairs for dinner a really well organised experience. Pre dinner drinks whilst we chose our menu choices. The service in the restaurant was impeccable and so well executed. …. And most importantly the food was absolutely delicious!! A comfortable nights stay and great breakfast to send us off on our way. So good we have booked a return stay and dinner for a birthday treat in November for our annual meet up with another birthday couple.

I have read all the reviews that rate this establishment highly. Unfortunately this was not our experience. We stayed a night there recently as part of a walking tour. Maybe the manager and his wife were having an off day which we all can have. We found the reception we received cold - it was almost like our presence and custom was an irritation bordering on inconvenience. The room was fine albeit the ensuite bathroom was up a couple of steps - I managed to slip and fall in the middle of the night trying to get back into bed. Shaftesbury itself tho’ is a gorgeous town and well worth a visit.

Stayed overnight on a walking break. The venue is very close to the town centre. The room was spotlessly clean and comfortable. The restaurant was formal but relaxed and the food and wine excellent.

I was amazed that our Waiter was unable to accept my Card Payment.He had to ask for the Chef/Owner to do this and bring the Mobile payment Terminal with him.This made me feel very uncomfortable.Then The person taking my payment hovered over me and was very persistent in that I could give a gratuity to the Staff,normally I would have done this,but because of this persons constant badgering I gave the Staff nothing.Lastly I noted that the decor itself was very tired and worn out..needs a big refurb.The Staff were really friendly,and we had been warned that the Chef was very odd to say the least..and this was from the Locals.Ending on a High Note the Staff were very nice and the Food was Ok.

This was the second time we ate here & went for the 5 course tasting menu with wine. Very good experience overall and love the food variety, mixture of flavours, textures etc. all were delicious, but my personal favourites were salmon & lobster starter as well as (to die for) honey filo pastry pudding. Service for us was perfect (both times we visited) a really nice combination of professional, observant, attentive BUT at the same time NOT at all stuffy, pretentious or over bearing. Price overall was very fair. Certainly not the cheapest place in town, but what you would expect for that quality of food, venue & service. We will be back!

During our recent trip to Shaftesbury my wife and I dined twice at La Fleur de Lys. On both occasions we were thoroughly delighted with our choice of venue. The experience begins with a warm welcome on arrival, and after drinks and nibbles in the charming little bar and perusal of the menu we were shown to our table in the restaurant. Impeccable service and delicious well presented food are the hallmarks of this establishment. A comprehensive and not overpriced wine list added to the enjoyment of the meals. A nightcap in the bar before leaving was a fitting end to a memorable evening. La Fleur de Lys provides all the charm and attention to detail that can only be found in an individual restaurant.

This hotel / restaurant takes itself seriously. It does everything right. Rooms and common areas are very comfortable in a traditional way. The food is amazing, quite simply - both in substance and presentation. We would come back to Shaftesbury just to stay here again.

No traveller could ask for cozier lodgings, kinder hosts, and better eggs, tea, and toast than what we found at the Fleur de Lys. David and Mary were extraordinarily considerate hosts. When I found that my backpack zipper had snagged and was contemplating ripping the whole thing open, David and Mary whisked the bag away and deftly, with pliers, managed to fix it and return it in working order with a smile. The Fleur de Lys is really an excellent restaurant with rooms and we were delighted with the excellent choice and quality of the dinner available. The menu was varied and interesting and the food beautifully presented. Our room was thoughtfully equipped and the bed was very comfortable. We had a great stay and hope to return soon. After walking to Shaftesbury from Cranbourne over a few days, staying in country inns, our final stop in the Fleur de Lys was an absolute joy. David and Mary who run the restaurant with rooms were delightful and very attentive with excellent staff. The standard and presentation of all the meals and especially dinner was astonishingly high and we regretted not dining there on our second night but had already booked elsewhere. The rooms were comfortable and well equipped with a laptop and internet access in all. We and our companions had the superior rooms which meant a bath and shower rather than shower only. Each room was named after a grape variety. Our friends room, Shiraz, was a little more spacious and had a full-sized bath. Sadly, our room, Muscat, had a bath that was short even for my 5’4” wife. For my 6’3” frame it was a non-starter. It was not enough to spoil our visit. One word of caution. The entrance to the car park is down the side of the building and very narrow. Do not turn in from Blake street but drive round to enter it from the road opposite. We both scratched our cars at the first attempt. Lesson leant. Despite the above a very enjoyable stay in a hotel in the heart of the town.

Food was excellent. The Chef is phenomenally talented. Each course prepared perfectly and presented as if it was art work. Every mouthful was a pleasure.The service was almost perfect apart from a young waiter who appeared to be a little off when I asked for something to be changed. But I will not allow that to detract from a lovely lovely evening. I am not from Shaftesbury area but if I am ever again in the vicinity I will be sure to visit again.

Some of the most imaginative dishes I have ever seen or tasted. We were given olives and lightly salted almonds while we chose our food. A really nice touch was the canapés before the starters. I had the fig wrapped in prosciutto stuffed with cheese to start, a stunning combination. My brother had the salad with chicken, my sister-in-law the salmon. Both said there were so many interesting flavours, it made the dishes unusual. My brother had the venison for the main. The sauce was rich and sweet, he was very impressed. My sister-in-law the lamb, she was very happy, I had the sea bass. We were given a selection of vegetables, we did not go hungry.My sister-in-law and I couldn’t Mange dessert but we both tried my brother’s passion fruit parfait, which was delicious, and had a layer of chocolate underneath. It was all good.In these strange times, I should also add that we were asked to sanitise our hands on entering, all the waiters and waitress wore masks and everything was clean. The chef had a chat to us and was lovely. It was all lovely. A thoroughly enjoyable evening. I recommend it.

We have lived in Shaftesbury for over 8 years and this was our first visit. We left wondering why on earth we had not visited before. Excellent service and a calm and relaxed atmosphere. Food was equally excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will be back again in the not too distant future. Very Covid aware with all precautions in place.

Stayed here for 2 nights and whilst the dinner on the 2 nights was really great, it could really do with some music and a few table candles to give it some atmosphere. Lovely hosts, Mary and David, operating under difficult circumstances and trying to keep people safe. Our room though was really awful, so small with too much furniture and the shower didn’t work , a mere dribble and no cold water in the sink. Think they must have a serious water pressure issue. Would definitely go back to the restaurant and maybe over night in one of the better appointed rooms.

We ate out with friends, table of four. The staff were very welcoming. The food was top notch. Three of us had the scallops, one had the lobster, each starter was perfectly to our liking. Main course was two saddles of lamb, one venison, one veal, again cooked to perfection, it makes a lovely change to be asked how we wanted our lamb cooked. Normally we don't have desert, but on this occasion we did, again top notch. I would highly recommend this restaurant, a little gem.

We booked here on recommendation for our Anniversary and we were not disappointed. As soon as you walk through the door you are completely looked after. The dinning room was lovely and cosy and the whole place had a lovely atmosphere.We had a three course meal and every mouth full was excellent.It is not the cheapest of places but for a wonderful treat and to be completely waited on it's worth every pennyWould I go again, absolutely. Eating here was a real treat. Great care was taken during the current coronavirus climate, and it felt very safe. Staff were very pleasant and extremely efficient. And the food - oh the food! We both agreed we couldn't remember when we had had a better meal. The cooking really was exceptional - well presented of course, but the flavours were wonderful - such thoughtful inspired cooking. We can't wait to find an excuse to go back!

We stayed at this restaurant with rooms where we enjoyed dinner in a tradional style restaurant. The service was good and all food was really delicious with a good choice of dishes, including breakfast before we left. It was lovely to have food served with nice glass and crockery. The only improvement we might suggest would be background music and a candle on the table.

First time staying overnight since lockdown began and a dream. The room was perfect with all those additional little elements that take things from the expected to the special; fresh coffee, fresh milk, fluffy dressing gown. However, despite this superb level of quality it was outdone by the stunning food, the evening menu and the morning breakfast were absolutely glorious. Without doubt we would recommend staying and/or eating here. Brilliant (plus it was my birthday - made special).

restaurant obviously closed due to corona virus, but they offer a limited choice takeaway service/ home delivery, last evening we had a super meal all cartoned up and ready to pop in the oven or microwave, the starters were salmon and lobster followed by saddle of lamb with veg and roasties. Absolutely lovely, and accompanied by a nice 2017 Chablis. Highly recommended just go on their website for further details.

The choices were excellent and none us could make up our minds as all the food looked appealing.We were not rushed at any time and the service was excellent, and to cap off a splendid meal the food was outstanding.We will come again, and its tempting to think that next time we could stay over!

Firstly, the food was fantastic. Can't be faulted. Marvellous.I was there with a group of friends so we made our own fun and were fairly unaware of others around us. However, we all felt that some music would enhance the atmosphere. Personally, I felt that the eating area was more like a hotel dining room (as opposed to a restaurant). The yellow walls felt cold and I'd like to see something warmer and more welcoming.I'd visit again with a larger party but would never visit as a couple because the lack of music meant that everyone was talking in low voices.

Visited this restaurant with friends on the last evening of our visit to Shaftesbury. What a find! we were thoroughly spoiled and beautifully looked after by Mary and her team. Drinks were taken in the bar whilst we chose what we wanted to eat and then we were shown into the restaurant. The tables were attractively laid and were not small so that we could sit comfortably. Canapes were served followed by starters, main course, dessert and coffee with petit fours. The service was impeccable and very efficient. The food was amazing, cooked on this occasion by David. if you are in Shaftesbury and want a superb meal in great surrounding and brilliant service then this is the place to go. It is not cheap but well worth every penny.

We went to the la Fleur de Lys on a wednesday in October the food was out of this world can't wait to come back and we will stay the night can't wait to eat the breakfast

A delightful hotel and restaurant, close to the town centre and with on-site parking. Our rooms were full of character with excellent en suite shower rooms. The restaurant, which you might need to book in advance, given its evident popularity, provided excellent cuisine; the venison was particularly memorable. The wine list was also comprehensive and well-selected, with commensurate good service.

Couldn't be more perfect. Really special foods looking beautiful, tasting fabulous. You know when on TV cooking programs like Master Chef, they rave about the depths of flavours and the presentation, well this was it. 10/10

Our first visit to this restaurant, have driven past many times over the last 4 years. Have been told by many that we should visit so today we did. Table booked for 7.00 we arrived early and straight away we were warmly greeted and shown a comfy seating area prior to the dining area. The first lady who met us introduced herself and made us feel very welcome and relaxed. We were then given snacks, main menu and the wine list. After a few minutes a second lady approached and asked if we were ready to order a drink.

Such a treat, all staff so attentive to detail. Was a one off for me but hope to repeat asap. Food n service xlent. Thank you

We don't get down to the South West very often but when we do we make a point of heading for Shaftesbury and La Fleur de Lys. Hospitality from Mary is first rate and David is a superb chef who really knows his stuff. Rooms are individual and comfortable. Dinner is of an extremely high quality with attentive service. My wife insists on coming here, if only for her obsession with their trademark strawberry souffle. Superb breakfast adds to the experience.

Last night had a superb family meal at La Fleur de Lys with 4 adults and 2 children celebrating our daughters 40th birthday. Staff were wonderful, attentive while being unobtrusive and could not do enough to help. The children had more children orientated meals which the chef was willing to do without any trouble. We provided a birthday cake which the staff cut up and presented it with a scoop of ice cream which just set it off. My daughter was very impressed with the whole ambience of the restaurant having never visited before and thoroughly enjoyed her birthday treat.

Lovely place to stay. Entrance snug to get in and out of but achievable. Shower could have been a bit more forceful but would recommend this place. Hosts couldn't be more helpful and the room was super clean. Very good. Enjoyed it.

Had never been before but so glad we did. The service and food were excellent. It is definitely on our must return to list.

My husband and i went to this restaurant last night for a lovely meal. We sat on the sofa in the bar area with a drink, with nuts and olives given to us while we waited for our table. We placed our dinner order while we waited.

Returned to our favourite venue when celebrating occasions, such as anniverary's, birthdays etc.. Welcome by Mary, as warm as ever. Wonderful staff, and service to match. Quality of dishes never vary, Lovely evening, So good to see how busy they are. Finally caught up with David at the end. Looking forward to our next visit. Thankfully not to long.

I was really looking forward to having a meal at La Fluer de Lys and I was not disappointed in fact my expectations were exceeded. My husband and I were given a very warm welcome which was just what we needed on a rainy evening by a very smart male member of staff who then took up through to the bar area which was warm and cosy. We then had a drink with some nibbles provided and chose from the menu and wine menu. When our table was ready we were taken through to a most romantic dining room it was really lovely. All staff were excellent at serving us and the food was top drawer. Our lamb was really delicious and the desserts were superb. Mary who is the manager, was so warm and friendly, we really enjoyed talking to her. After our meal David her husband who is the Head Chef appeared and came over to speak to us and we said how much we had enjoyed our meal and the evening. I travel regularly and eat at many top restaurants in the UK and abroad and can honestly say La Fleur de Lys is right up there in my top five.
