At last I managed to get to Walthamstow to try out this old established Manze's branch . Owned and run by the same family that had the Chapel Street shop ( now sadly closed due to unbearable business rates ) it did not disappoint . The pies were hot and fresh , mash was tasty and lump free and the liquor was full of parsley - the whole combination put together on the plate then one adds chilli vinegar and white pepper to taste . In a great loction , a great traditional shop in a traditional market .

What an absolutely wonderful old pie and mash shop, can see why it's listed and worth a visit in itself. This place along with the William Morris Gallery make Walthamstow worth a visit. The disappointing thing is all they had was minced beef pies. Nothing if you are a vegetarian of just dont like beef. I know some people will say that is a traditional pie and mash shop, but life moves on. Red phone boxes are very pretty but no uses them. It goes partly to explain why with a packed Saturday market the place was almost empty. If you've got four people here and only one is veggie, that's 4 customers you've lost.

I often have trouble suggesting "British restaurants" to foreigners visiting London. Hard to explain that there is not such a thing, really. Dilemma sold: Manze is one - despite the fact that it was founded by an Italian man. This is a fantastic little place especially if you are interested in interiors and vintage shops, as the original tile decor is definitely worth the trip. As to the actual pie and mash: indeed, nothing special. But the pie and mash is not the reason to you come here. Sit down on the narrow wooden benches, sip your watery tea, have a look at the old ladies around. This is proper old school.

Like myself, many born in Walthamstow have moved away, travelled the world during their careers and eaten in posh places. Why, then, are most of us born in Walthamstow drawn to our birthplace, with memories of our culture as it used to be but with modern realities almost completely changed? Bombed out physically and changed culturally, Walthamstow can still hang on to old times by its finger tips via Manzies. Is the food all that good or are we just desperate for our almost lost traditions and upbringing? Whatever the answer, this old chap always visits the L Manze Eel and Pie experts during E17 visits and hopes that Manzies will go on forever. Please eat there in order to keep this excellent place alive. That is your good deed for the day and one that you will enjoy as you are immersed in true London culture and tradition, at least while you are inside the restaurant! If you are a tourist from abroad, this is the true taste of old London, not fish and chips which is a meal of Jewish origin and therefore imported rather than part of London culture. You`ve travelled a long way. Too long to miss the chance of eating at L. Manzi, Walthamstow. Love it or not, you will have experienced a taste of my childhood from 1944 and beforehand. Did you know that the engines and chassis for London red buses were built by AEC in Walthamstow before WW11? Most of those workers ate at Manzies, including my father. Enjoy your eels and pies!! :-)

The restaurant room juts out from a red-bricked building. It is a sheer joy with tiles and fittings that take you straight back to Edwardian times. Take a second to look at the sign writing and gilt work on the frontage. Look up at the ceiling to see the tin plate patterned painted roof covering. Even the till, that takes away your money, looks the part. The individual wooden seated booths are just as you might hope. The food was not to my personal taste but the room was busy, so I concluded that I was in the minority. I visited for lunch primarily to see the decor, which itself is worth the visit. I remember that 60 years or so ago there were still a few places like this around, but now the tiled walls and partitioned wooden tables are very rare and worth preserving. The pie shop is self-service. The menu is traditional and limited to pies and eels. Prices are low. The pie was good, but not exceptionally so. The mash was excellent. The liquor sauce served with it is, I guess, an acquired taste. The tea was good strong builders, which is how I like it. So go to experience an authentic traditional East End diner and food which still survives in what is now a very multicultural area, but do not expect fine dining!NB no alcohol is served, and there are no toilets.

OK, so it is a cafe serving Pie and Mash, so basically you cannot give it five stars can you? The Pie and Mash was only OK, but then not over expensive either. Service was a little slow but I think the chap in front was buying a take-away for the 5,000 but with only one person serving there was a wait...but not the fault of the lady dishing up, she was lovely. The building is listed and in the pictures looks great, when you get in it looks what it is, somewhat tired. Benches to sit on are hard and only for those with small bums, there is not a lot of room front to back.We went because we felt we should....such places will die out, so everyone should go once...but sadly we would not go again.Walthamstow....the area...is VERY cosmopolitan. Overall I have to give it three stars, mainly because to give it five would be to rate it alongside much better places. Five stars for being different, but only three for what it is.Don't be put off though, go, it is part of London's heritage.

I very reluctantly and with a very heavy heart give this only an average rating. For me visiting a pie and mash is a five star event. However this shop reminds me of why traditions die out when they do not evolveThe shop is an absolute must see for anyone interested in working class history. The shop tiling and fittings are unchanged (probably since the turn of the previous century). They are of superb historical interest. The atmosphere is likewise unchangedI visited this shop on the basis of the reviews and was extremely disappointed. The (English London) staff were barely helpful, telling me they only had small pies and took no interest in our order even though the place was almost deserted (weekday lunchtime). The range of pies is extremely limited. They do jellied and stewed eels. It felt like I remember pie and eel shops from my childhood - condensation on windows, uncomfortable seating, unhelpful staff - a purely functional place designed to give the masses cheap filling food with no concept of making it an enjoyable experienceAs for the food. the liquor was excellent. The potato was good. The pie had very little filling and seemed to be mainly gravy and I found the pastry to be a little greasy for a pie shop pie.I would love this place to survive but am unsure whether it will unless it changes its approach. it is no longer the 1950s.Next time it's back to Goddards at Greenwich

I have been coming to this Pie and Mash shop for ten years. Service is quick even when there is a big queue. Food great. I getting a fruit pie to take home for later.

Evocative tiled interior where fops and dandies, tarts and squires have eaten over the decades. Feast on pie and mash served as fast as the cook can bring it from the oven. Treat your foreign friends to a truly English meal, washed down with a mug of builder's. Good hot food to make your belly smile.

The pies are always stuffed full of good lean mince meat and crispy around the edge. Cut them open and let the liquor in with some chili vinegar. I say "them" as me and my family, who have lived in the area for just a couple of hundred years, or more, always have more than one.The mash is nice as well. Cover the lot with salt and white pepper. Go mad and have a can of coke and a fruit pie for afters. Try the stewed eels - not for me but I am told they are good.Generations of NE London families have been served by generations of this family. I don't hold with north v south London but have to say that I have yet to find a P&M shop as good as this. Kelly's on Bethnal Green Road comes close. Those south of the river that I have tried have been nice but 3 or 4 out of 5. This is 5 plus. My thirteen-year-old rules out us ever moving because of Manze's!

Just popped in and fantastic as ever. Tried most in East London but this is the best. Worth the drive from Dorset.

One of the very best Pie & Mash shops in London. Classic pie & mash, Grade A jellies, wooded booths, heavy tiled walls and saw dust on the floor. Perfect.

A great pub for Craft Beer and Real Ale which is a few minutes walk from both Leyton underground station and Leyton Midland Station. I counted 24 Keg taps and 10 cask taps, and when we visited there were 7 different cask beers and 16 different keg beers offering a variety of styles and breweries. They also have a decent range of AF beers in the fridge. We've also had the Sunday roast twice now, and both times was very tasty, especially the rosemary and garlic roast potatoes. It's also worth noting that the Gravity Well brewery tap room is only a few minutes walk away (who are probably producing some of the best hazy IPAs at the moment), so it's worth the trip over to visit both.
