Kyoto Sushi and Grill in Birmingham

The all you can eat sushi is worth the price of £33.80. There are numerous rules. You have four sittings. 3 dishes per person plus sides over a 2.5 hour period. We have dined here many times and the sushi roles are what we recommend. They come in portions of two and are made to order. Colourful well presented and tasty. The sushi roll choice was varied and covered all bases you would need to get lots of variety. The fried dishes like the octopus balls were very fresh just not to the standard of the sushi. The edamame beans also had a few pods of beans which were hairy & older looking compared to the expected vivid green pods. It’s £33.80 per person. They said to us that cash was “preferred” but offered no card payment alternative. There is a cash machine across the street so this is not the largest inconvenience. Service charge not applied to the final bill. The service was slower than expected. But I think it’s because we ordered our second sitting after we finished the previous one and therefore didn’t have the “steady stream” of dishes coming to the table. Would definitely come back. Perfect for a weekend lunch time in the city after shopping.

Good sushi, fast service. Reasonable price. We had the all you can eat, which is 3 dishes per diner for each round. You can have as many rounds as you want. You can choose from every dish on the menu. We'll definitely go there again. It's only a 5 min walk from New Street station if you're in the train.

Great food and decent value but all you can eat but only 1 scoop of ice cream per person and can't order more? Seriously? 1 scoop =1 star sort it our guys!

Had fantastic experience! 😍 The food was delicious and full of flavor, with a variety of options to choose from and they had HALAL options. What really stood out was their unique offer where you could sample everything on the menu at different stations, which made the dining experience even more exciting and enjoyable. The concept was fun, and it allowed me to try a wide range of sushi and other dishes. I wish that the service was a bit faster. We asked for a water several times to be served. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a tasty and interactive sushi experience! 😋🤩

I'd been to Kyoto Sushi & Grill several times with my brothers before the menu changed this year, and always enjoyed the experience. Food was great and the service used to be decent. We used to go for the lunchtime special which was £24.50 pp for 6 main dishes and 2 sides (and an additional 10% service charge). This is the first time after the menu has changed that we've been to Kyoto's. My brothers and I were skeptical to come due to the menu change and price increase but we wanted to try it out. While the food was still good, the service has become horrendous. We usually spend an hour there - this time we spent 1 hour and 45 mins due to the food taking so long to be served. This was to the point where we started ordering rounds in advance because they were taking over 20 mins for each round. Whilst waiting for our 3rd round, we became less patient so we asked why the food was taking so long, and only then did they let us know that they only had 1 person making the Sushi. Could this not have been said earlier so we could manage our expectations? Considering it is now way more expensive (£33.80 pp and £1 extra for each serving of Sashimi), the least we would've expected was good service. I don't think we'll be coming here as often as we used to. 😔

Food is okay taste wise. Quality wise the sushi isn’t the best, the rest is average. Could have been better for its price. Also the policy of only ordering 3 dishes per round per person makes everything so much slower.

My favourite sushi place in Birmingham because of the all you can eat option. The food definitely adds up, and you get full quicker than you can ever imagine but it’s still worth it. It definitely my favourite Japanese spot to go to!

We had our first date there, we got engaged there and have our anniversary every year there food is really good. Edit: we went there for our yearly anniversary today and I just found out about the 2 star hygiene rating. Please get your act together. I won't be coming back with such a low score.

Me and my boyfriend went for valentine's day and, despite it being busy, we got our food quickly and it was delicious! The quality for the price is absolutely amazing! The tables can be a bit small for the amount that comes though :) Had an amazing time and can't wait to return!!

Couldn’t really understand how this restaurant has a 4.5 star rating. The food is quite over-priced and tastes very average. Many of the dishes have a very small portion size. The Bao bun is so tiny and priced at £6! The peach iced tea tasted so bad that that it was hard to drink it. The chicken ramen soup tasted average and thus the 2 star rating else would be 1 star. Decor could be better too. Service was alright. This restaurant really needs to improve its food taste and quality and be realistic about the prices!

The food was absolutely lovely. Found the attentiveness of the staff hit and miss. I had jasmine tea to drink which is stated on the menu was refillable. I had presumed it would be a fresh cup of tea each time, but was told no, they had provided me with a teabag and I had to reuse it-three times to be precise as they just added more boiling water. Found this rather poor. Also, cash only payment. When you're paying for two £33 buffets, it isn't that convenient.

Amazing food. All you can eat sushi and sides and starters. Decently priced. Accomodating halal diets. My wife and I throughly enjoyed our experience here and cant wait to come back for more!

The restaurant is declining. I have visited this restaurant a few times before, but this is the worst experience I’ve had so far. The portions in the all-you-can-eat section have become smaller and smaller, and sashimi now requires an additional £1 charge. It’s no longer as good as it used to be. I won’t be returning or recommending it to my friends.

Really good Japanese food, great selection even if you don't like sushi.

Used to come here with my girlfriend and it was a great bargain for the price of the food and what you get. It has gotten more expensive per person with the Sushi Buffet. You get 4 rounds of orders and 3 dishes per order and we could only get to 3 orders before we were full and got our money's worth. The only thing I must say about the food is i noticed the quality of the rice on the sushi seems to be dryer and not as fresh which i think let's it down. There are more expensive restaurants in the area with better quality food but I guarantee you wouldn't be disappointed if you come here with what you pay for. Speaking of payment. I'm not a big fan of the fact you can only pay by cash meaning you'll either have to go to the cashpoint beforehand. We are in 2025. Everyone uses card/contactless. This is the only disappointing thing I could think of the venue.

The a la carte sushi buffet here is great value for money at £33.60 in the evenings. Highly recommen the food. Sometimes I wish the service was a little faster, we asked for water a few times and it took a while to come.

Food was great but I would recommend them to get rid of ALL YOU CAN EAT business model as restrictions like limited quantity orders per round, is time consuming and inefficient.

recently dined at Kyoto Sushi, and our experience was made exceptional thanks to our server, Jack. From the moment we were seated, Jack went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect. He consistently checked on us without being intrusive, making sure our drinks were always full and all our needs were met before we even had to ask. Jack was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, answering all our questions with patience and great recommendations. His warm, attentive, and professional demeanor truly elevated our meal, making it one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in a long time. If you’re visiting Kyoto Sushi, I highly recommend asking for Jack—he’ll make your night unforgettable!

We used to love this restaurant as we did enjoy the food here, but after the sashimi being removed from the all you can eat menu (just 2 choices left with an extra charge per dish), sadly we are not coming back again.

This used to be my regular sushi spot for the past 3+ years and I loved going there but unfortunately it has gone downhill. We came for the all you can eat option but the service was much slower than before. We received one small plate of sushi and then had to wait another 10 minutes for every other plate even though the restaurant was less than half-full. They didn’t return our order card so we couldn’t place another order without repeatedly asking the waiters. To make matters worse, they kept bringing the wrong items or skipping some altogether. At one point they even skipped an entire round of our order. It was hardly the “all you can eat” experience we expected. I understand that it’s a business and that prices have been raised and portions have gotten smaller, but at least still let me order the food I want. To say the least, we were disappointed because we genuinely loved coming here.

Great to see the buffet back in action! The selection is better than the previous AYCE choices especially with the bigger variety in sushi and even the hot foods. The Okonomiyaki has improved as well, so unsure whether this is due to a change of chef. The only downside of the food was there was no Japanese pannacotta when it was mid afternoon on a Sunday, so that was disappointing especially it’s limited to one per person. Can’t fault the service as everything was cleared up quickly and drinks were topped up regularly!

I don’t even know where to begin. Our Sunday meal turned what should have been a relaxing meal into an absolute disaster. Firstly the blonde waitress seemed like she did not want to be there, we politely asked for water multiple times and she did not bring any water, I had to go to the bar myself and ask again, she huffed like we were being unreasonable. It looked like she just wanted to just get back to speaking to her friends and scrolling through phone, same with another male staff. I would recommend this place but the management team needs to address some of these staff issues. Overall the meal was really good just a shame about the service.

The food was horrendous. The prawns were dry and flavourless. The mussles were awful. The korean chicken was again flavourless. However the staff were very attentive and the service was great. Gave 1 star as I didnt go there for the staff 😭

Heard about this place and was in the area and thought we would give it a try. We love eating sushi and were looking forward to this experience. We opted for the buffet option and were not disappointed. There are two main menus to choose from and even though it sounds complicated, it isn’t. You can only order a few dishes at a time which makes sense as I can imagine people can get carried away and this saves on food wastage. We had an excellent waiter Jack who chose our first round for us as there was so much to choose from! He did a great job and we started picking items ourselves. There is a little wait between the rounds but everything is freshly prepared so that is to be expected. All in all we were very happy with the food and will be back again. My only gripe is that I wish I had a bigger belly to eat more sushi!!

Oh my goodness, what a treat. We've been several times now and can confidently say it's the best around! You won't find something better, especially at this price.

Staff were really friendly. Food was subpar but you get what you pay for. We were seated next to the windows and the window sill was really dirty and dusty. Personally wouldn’t come here again but if you’re looking for good value and don’t mind the quality/freshness of the food, this is the place.

Update - 31/08/24 We revisited Kyoto for another mouth watering feast. We had the jasmine tea again, and two pepsi. Service fell a bit short on this visit, as we waited over an hour to receive our second choices, though the 3rd and 4th came very quick. Food was delicious again, mostly sushi choices with a few of the hot meals later. Old review ---- We opted for the buffet, jasmine tea and two glasses of soft drink. Food was delicious as always. sushi, duck, oysters, tempura, stir fried vegetables, soup, Korean style chicken and finished with red bean buns . Aways look forward to a visit.

Was stuck in traffic called up to let them know, they held the table and made sure everything was okay. We had amazing food all night and was thoroughly enjoyable!

I loved the dividers next to us that ensured a little more privacy while we were eating, and the food and customer service was phenomenal. Especially after having karaage fish and tempura pineapple for the first time.

The food was good, that I will praise The service was the worst I have had To start, all of our food arrived BEFORE our first round of drinks, no check back and 3 members of staff asked if we had ordered, what annoyed me the most was when I waved a girl down to ask for more drinks she rolled her eyes and her attitude was disgusting, this was the first time I have ever been to Birmingham and I'm very upset about my first meal out in this city and it was for my friends birthday If you want servers who ignore and do nothing, by all means come here 🙄

I was very disappointed with this sushi buffet. The selection was extremely limited, and the quality of the food was subpar. The sushi seemed poorly made, with canned tuna used in many rolls, and the salmon was far from fresh. Overall, the experience did not meet my expectations at all.

Lots of choices and the people there were lovely. Quality has improved since we visited a couple of years ago. Wish I could grow 2 stomachs before eating at this place.

It’s the second time we visited here. I think they must have changed the cook. We’re disappointed because the food quality is not as good as before. The choices of food are fewer and the way they handle the dishes is also strange. First, the tempura is not in the tempura batter. Secondly, it’s very very strange that the “grill pineapple” was like putting leftover bits into batter and deep fried. The Korean grilled beef is the only item which remains in good standard. The service was okay. But if I were to visit again I will not order the buffet.

GAVE ME FOOD POISONING!!! Served me obviously reheated cold chicken in their chicken ramen soup. The dish was served to me lukewarm. The chicken was slightly warm but got colder the deeper into the bowl it went. We complained and got it replaced for a new one that was definitely warmer but still had narutomaki that was cold at the bottom. I finished my second bowl but then 20 minuets after I was horribly sick. We informed the staff there who still made us pay over £50 for the meal. The staff were welcoming, and very apologetic about the situation. Service during the meal was a bit abrupt, and we had to remind them to return our order card several times. I am honestly disappointed. For a place with such good reviews I expected a far better meal and service.

The best japanese restaurant located in the arcadian. The sushi is amazing and the waiters and waitresses were very friendly and attentive :) if you love sushi this is your go to place !

The food was FANTASTIC. The service was EXCELLENT. The sushi bar was AMAZING.

We came here last month for lunch and we opted for the set meal option. We ate all that is in the picture. There were plenty of options within the menu and you really get your money’s worth. I personally enjoyed the sushi and okonomiyaki. The only thing I can say is that the waiter forgotten to give us our drink and the refill of water a few times. Also the refillable tea is actually not tea they will use the same tea bag and just refill the water apart from that all is ok. Staff were helpful with the menu options. Overall the dining experience was still good and we were really full afterwards.

Went with my family after hearing reviews and I must say I’m incredibly disappointed ! The food was incredibly oily to the point I had to use tissue to squeeze it out . We all got home and started vomiting . Forgot to mention the food is hardly cooked :/ think we’ve got food poisoning.

The food at kyoto restaurant. .badly cooked very thing was microwaved back up to be served back to people nothing is fresh to eat at this kyoto restaurant .this is the worse service ...at times we where waiting for are food for a 1 hour from them to be served at awere table when it came the food was very cold we refused to eat. .me and a friend was very ill the next morning with food poisoning. .we spent a £100 on this meal .we advise people not go to the restaurant if won't to be ill the hygeine of this restaurant is poor the toilets are dirty and smell very bad ...its an waste your money at kyoto restaurant .this one of the worst chinese restaurants inside the China town birmingham city centre. .!!

I had the buffet option here for lunch at around half 1 on a Saturday and just had to say wow. Everything we ordered was fab. Fast service even on a busy Saturday and the staff were lovely. They walked us through how to use their table buffet menu system so you don't even have to move. Definitely a hit. The restaurant is cash only but there is a cash point at the Tesco on the same road. The bathroom has an accessible stand alone toilet with a wide door but I'm not sure what type of accessible bathroom it is. Wide doors at the main entrance but not automatic and if you are making an evening of it they are night next door to a bar with outside seating so all good for the (hopefully) dry summer. They have plenty of vegan options as well as meat ones and you can pick all your dishes individually. They don't have a children's menu that I saw but there's plenty of options including sides. My only regret is not having enough room to try everything but I did have desert. A thumbs up from me and the other half.

Came to celebrate my daughters birthday with family as she loves sushi and came on a Sunday at about 1.30pm and the place was quiet. Service was prompt however the explanation - delivered very patiently - of the various ordering options was complicated to understand between a la carte, lunchtime menu and all you can eat buffet. However the staff helped us to understand what would be the best value for our group and so we ordered accordingly. One member was gluten intolerant and was offered a special menu but options appeared to be quite limited. Additionally, although the restaurant has a halal sticker outside, we were advised that some sauces used were not suitable for halal so these would be omitted and we were provided alternative sauces instead. As a result some of the food tasted quite bland although the preparation and delivery was prompt and presentable. Most of the sushi, poke and gyōza were excellent, as was the beef bulgogi and miso soup. The banana fry dessert was a hit as well. Would recommend visiting for a different dining experience, but come with time on your hands to get to grips with the ordering system.

You get to try quite a few Japanese dishes due to the way they operate (buffet style). All very tasty.

The best sushi I've found in the UK They offer unlimited sushi that is made to order from a selected menu. You order in rounds depending on your group size and are not limited to what you can order. All the options are of a high quality and if you have more than 2 rounds you're getting high quality sushi at incredible value. Other products are also available such as soups/sides, ramen bowls and fried/cooked options. I have been here many times now and the consistent quality is worth travelling for.

One of my favourite sushi places ever. All you can eat means you can sample lots of different dishes which you would otherwise not try. Food is such good quality and serving staff are always so friendly and attentive. It has gotten a little more expensive in recent years but I guess that's the cost of living. Certainly worth a visit if you are a sushi lover

Terrible experience, would not recommend. I was put in a corner with no waiter to look after the area. The buffet only allows two dishes per person per round and you need to wait 15 minutes for a measly four sushi dishes.

Overall decent japanese buffet. Around £32pp after service charge. Sashimi doesn’t come as an item alone, instead it comes as a set with sushi. Kind of obvious it’s a business strategy to limit people from keep ordering sashimi.

Never had an issue when coming here. I do miss the old buffet style menu they had as it was easier to finish and eat within your means. The new menu is still pretty great with a lot of vegetarian/vega options too, you are bound to find something you’d enjoy. I have never had an issue with the service, we went on a busy Saturday evening with no reservation and was still seated promptly. The cards were taken whenever we had ordered and food did take a bit longer than normal but it was not the end of the world. The sushi is of course not going to be top level but it was still tasty and fresh. Decent portions for the bigger items too. Would recommend but there are many reviews saying otherwise. Guess it depends when you go and who you have in service.

Great food, friendly staff, always come here to treat myself

I am surprised with all of the positive reviews for this place! Unfortunately everything I ate either was undercooked or tasteless. The best thing was the ice cream at the end but that was Limited to one per person! The sushi didn't taste fresh, service took a while to serve food and when asking for knives and forks and straws this took about 30 - 40 mins to arrive! Service charge and cash only. For 40 quid a head I would recommend going elsewhere in brum as there is loads of choice for sushi or other tasty eats.

Kyoto is one of my favourite restaurants. The food is fantastic the staff are great and the prices are extremely reasonable. For the money you are getting incredible quantities of food. You are unlikely to leave hungry or anything short of fully satiated. The food is often very high quality and having gone here for the first time, having never previously had sushi, I am now entirely sold on sushi being awesome. I'm also not bad with chopsticks now.

I had the crunchy tempura chicken rolls and some korean spicy wings and will definitely be returning to try more food with the all you can eat buffet option for £30 given the welcoming environment creates by the staff and the quality of the food :) also insanely fast waiting times, it must have only been 5-10 minutes before we received our first dishes and not long after for the katsu curry my friend ordered!

This is a great place to have good sushi and their buffet menu allows you to have an “all you can eat” experience at a fixed cost. We went on a weekday dinner but still booked in advance (just called them) as they're often quite busy. There is a limit of 2.5 hours for ordering food which is long enough to allow tasting of almost all of their dishes included in the buffet menu. This menu also contains a decent variety of desserts. The great thing about this menu is that all the dishes have photos against them to help you guide visually as well. There is a good variety of drinks, which is separate from the buffet menu. The service is good and fast and the staff takes good care of you by explaining how the buffet menu works and how to place the orders. I would recommend this place for anyone looking for an all you can eat sushi experience as it is good value for money.

Best sushi in town. You can come with people that don't like sushi and they will love it. There are loads of option for vegan and vegetarian as well.
