Kweilin in Midlothian

Like going back in time, run down and in need of attention - just 5 tables were occupied and 3 had issues. Nothing to keep the basic food warm, spare ribs came without a warm water finger bowl, asked and got a tiny bowl of stone cold water, had to chase drinks which had been forgotten (like the next table). Very pleasant staff but really have to watch what's going on in the restaurant - NOT a complicated thing to fix and should be sooo much better. An experience we will not revisit at this

Gave this place a try as was passing by and was hungry. It doesn't look the cleanest and the place was frozen. Food was OK nothing more nothing less.

We ordered a takeaway for collection, customer service was fab and the food was ready within 15minutes. Since the orchid was taken over by new owners I haven’t been able to find a chinese in Midlothian that serves the same crispy shredded honey chilli chicken/beef! The dark colour with sesame seeds, sticky sauce with lots of honey and Garlic. I’ve come across Other places out with Midlothian but not ideal when you live here. We thought we’d order It and give it a try, also ordered chicken curry, boiled rice, salt and chilli chips and chow mien. The chow mien is greasy but really tasty. It looked great but once you start to tuck in you realise there’s more bean sprouts than noodles and that sort of ruins it for me personally. The chicken curry is pretty watered down flavour wise, not the best curry to be honest but it was okay. Salt and chilli chips were okay, tasted more of 5spice rather than that chilli and garlic taste I’ve had in most other places and there wasn’t the usual onions and chillis through them. Chips were crispy though which was nice! The rice is rice, done the job. And the crispy honey chilli shredded chicken was not crispy, it was soggy, large chunks so not shredded and tasted like a sweet and sour sauce which is like an orange red colour. The food was okay, I mean we ate it! But just nothing to write home about. The search for some decent crispy shredded honey chilli chicken continues.......

Really good food from here. Large portions, good price and v tasty. The sweet and sour sauce is NOT fluorescent pink/orange like some others!

Consistently best prepared and cooked Chinese takeaway food in area. Going to go at Xmas too. Everything top drawer.

Brilliant local Chinese takeaway. Staff always very friendly and food is great. You can sit in as well which is a nice bonus. Very reasonably priced for food and drinks. Always first choice when we are looking for Chinese food.

Ordered chips curry sauce and rice and got home rice was stone cold and found a black hair in chips. when calling Chinese to try resolve issue, making things more difficult they asked us to bring back the food which was already plated up back into the original boxes which were in bin, messy and not nice to have to do. When arrived at shop no apology what so ever or care that food was cold said they wouldn’t give us full money back and guy serving was arrogant and unapologetic. Won’t be back.

Poor customer service that left a bad taste in my mouth and that’s without talking about the food. Ordered two portions of chips and curry sauce and one portion of rice to collect, upon getting home (1 minute drive) I was astonished to find my rice stone cold and to make matters worse finding a black hair in beside my partners chips and curry sauce. When trying to resolve this issue the man on the phone asked me to re-package all the food and take it back. Man in shop was very rude and only offered part of a refund and never once apologised. Won’t be back!!

This is a solid place to get a Chinese takeaway from. Our meals of choice which are always tasty: - lemon chicken - sweet and sour shredded beef - spare ribs - egg fried rice Is very consistent and well priced. Would mark it 5 star but they don’t accept card and you don’t get free crackers if you pick two mains and rice.

I read other reviews and noted how many delivery customers complained about waiting time. One even suggested 'sitting in' to eat as it might be quicker. Well, my advice is don't! After waiting 1 hour for our starter to arrive, my party and I upped and left after paying for the drinks we had consumed, and went to an Indian cuisine restaurant in the nearest town, Dalkeith. Read my review of that establishment, if you can find it. Sitting in is just as long, if not longer, as ordering food for delivery. We will not be going back there. Neither will we be ordering food for delivery. The sad thing is, the food is good.

Expect a bit more... so bland and small portions. Defiantly a not return.. Doesn't except cards, prehistoric, come on it ain't rocket science

Great food, great service, great location and great value for money! I have eaten here a few times and have never had a bad meal.

We've had a couple of take-away meals delivered since our previous favourite, The Orchid, changed hands. Whilst the food was relatively good from the Kweilin it was certainly nothing special. Despite being told the food would take around 1 hour to be delivered on the second occasion it took more than 2 hours which seems ridiculous. Not exactly fast food! We won't be back I'm afraid. If you want to try it out I would recommend you don't go for the home delivery option.

After moving to Midlothian 2 years ago, one of the places we were disappointed to leave behind was our local chinese takeaway. However, after ordering fron the Kweilin our Chinese food cravings were satisfied and up to (and for some dishes even exceeded) the quality and flavour we were used to. Service is quick and friendly and portions are very generous. Usually in our house 1 order of fried rice, prawn crackers and 1 main does 2 people...although my husband can nom a full main to himself! Haven't had a bad meal from here yet 😁

Hay una mezcla de chino a domicilio en Gorebridge y la mayoría de ellos son normales. Kweilin, sin embargo, es una joya escondida. Para una China, este lugar es sencillamente excelente. Solíamos vivir en Edimburgo antes de trasladarnos a Midlothian, y yo diría precio este pequeño lugar como la mejor comida china para llevar que hemos encontrado. No parece gran cosa desde fuera, pero por dentro es espacioso y confortable. Muy buen servicio y comida. Es tan bueno tener un gran restaurante chino que puede sentarse. Su lado para llevar es muy concurrido, pero recomiendo que vienen para una noche. Los aperitivos y platos principales era de £25 por dos. No puedo discutir con eso.

We tried Kweilin after getting fed up of the consistently awful Chinese takeaways in Bonnyrigg and Dalkeith. The food has never disappointed us and always arrives promptly. The only downside is that you can only pay by cash!

We've been here many times with many children and they are always super accommodating and quick to serve . the food is always well priced and tasty. I'd recommend if in the area.

We have stayed in a few local towns but have always returned to the Kweilin for our chinese takeaway! It's definitely worth a try to see if it has you as hooked as us! Our family have used it for lots of years and wouldn't go anywhere else. We also phone and collect the order which they usually say will be ready in 10 mins.

Food was lovely but sadly spoilt by having to wait for 2 hours for delivery. Kitchen should really not take any more orders if that's the case!

Decided to try sitting in instead of going for takeaway. We were the only ones sitting in on a Saturday night although takeaways were busy. Service was polite but very slow. There was only one staff member on out front and he was having to run back and forward with takeaway orders. Food took a long time to come out of kitchen and didn't all come together. Even with some of the main arriving and then he would go deal with takeaway before being the rest from kitchen and then getting us plates. Food wasn't the best restaurant Chinese I've had. Was an Average takeaway quality. Portion sizes were average. Staff member was very polite, just very overworked. Would visit again for takeaway, but would avoid for sitting in.

Usually come here for a weekly takeaway but I decided to sit in this time as I had some time on my hands and I had brought a few family members.There's the normal anglicised chinese foods that are known by the majority of the British people. The spring rolls are particularly delicious and the meat dishes are very well prepared. Service is polite and speedy. I enjoyed a nice and relaxed weekend meal here. Will sit in here again if the circumstances of time allow me to.

Came in here for a meal. The service is quick yet friendly but I have to say that the place is very cold and the staff refused to turn on the heating for some reason (it is Winter!).The food here is the bog standard "British Chinese" takeaway. It's not going to tantalize your taste buds but it will satisfy a craving for comforting food. My wife and I enjoyed our spring rolls and fried rice dishes- highly recommend the beef and chicken dishes too. Will be back again with friends in the near future!

Sat in last night , restaurant really cold. Service was good however meal very disappointing . Dinner plates were warm but my meal arrived 5 minutes before my partners and both we're brought on cold plates . The plate warmer failed to keep the food warm. My spring roll starter looked as it had been bought from Iceland and his soup was greasy . £30.00 incl 1 drink each was was not acceptable , won't sit in again .

Have had several perfect meals, love the banquets. Very polite and friendly service always. I can't understand why more people don't eat in, it is not much more expensive than a carry out and so much more of a treat. Very reasonably priced, much cheaper than in Edinburgh. This restaurant once provide us with a carry out for 21 people at a distance of 10 miles away - it was absolutely stunning food and arrived in perfect condition, exactly on time!Love the food!

Beautiful food always piping hot and freshly made this is without a doubt the best in the area and the staff are lovely and friendly would highly recommend

I have had a great deal of take-always from the restaurant and also sit in meals everything is piping hot and they always have a great selection, the staff are very friendly and the place itself is very nice. Well worth a visit

We went to the restaurant following reviews on here, having lived in the area for years but never been. The rice paper chicken and roast duck were both excellent, and exceptionally friendly staff. A lovely meal and would definitely go again.

Had quite a few takeaways over the years but had never sat in. We went along a few weeks ago for a meal and it was excellent. Not many people seem to eat in the restaurant but it was very busy with takeaways. Good value for money as well.

One of the best..or perhaps the best Chinese in the area. You won't find any other place in Midlothian with such polite staff and of course, amazing and yummy food. Some dishes are particularly brilliant such as the rice paper prawns and spring rolls. I came here for my parents anniversary and they loved the restaurant. If you have not been, then you are missing out!

I have been eating in the Kweilin for many years and it never disappoints. There is a whole ritual around the presentation of your meal and you have the impression that the waiting staff are keen to see your approval of their wonderful food. It is a delightful place to eat. You feel pampered.

The food here is just divine. I come here regularly with my family for a meal perhaps once or twice a month for a treat. The service is great and the restaurant is very well decorated and comfy.The food, above all, is just simply fabulous. It tastes fresh and full of flavour. I always order the chef special mini spring rolls here which are to die for!

Great service- staff are attentive and helpful and very polite. Furthermore the food is great, taste amazing and I come here every weekend for a takeaway and the occasional meal in the restaurant. Faultless.

We use this place quite regulary and I have to say they know how to cook certain dishes. The Rice Paper Chicken starter is absolutely wonderful.Service can be a bit sporadic, and delivery times could be improved.But if you are looking for a lovely Chinese meal in Midlothian, you'd be hard pushed to find something better

This place has consistently good food whether I sit in or take out. The decor is lovely and the premsies are clean.However sometimes the service is a tad too slow but it is usually friendly. I recall one waitress who was slightly impolite and looked very angry whilst serving me and my family. Asides from that the food is fabulous here! A huge range of dishes at good prices. The chow mein and chef spring rolls are amazing.

There are not many places to eat out here in Gorebridge that are worthwhile but Kweilin is an exception. The place is large and roomy. Service is pite and very friendly. I love how everytime you come to sit in you get free complimentary prawn crackers. Drinks are served at a good pace and the food usually comes on time but sometimes there can be a delay.The food tastes fresh and full of amazing flavours. The starters are all very good, I suggest people try the chicken satay on skeweres and the chef's mini spring rolls. The chow mein and rice dishes are also to die for. The place seems very clean and proffesional. I also see lots of people coming in out out of this place to order takeaways and there does seem to be lots of deliverys.I reccommend you try sitting in to gain the full experience.

Out of all the chinese within Midlothian- Kweilin is one of the best I have been too. The service is consistently good. The staff are quick and efficent. Drinks are served promptly and the food does take a little longer than expected but the flavours are fresh and simply delicious. I had the Chicken in Black bean sauce and fillet of beef cantonese style. Both dishes were amazing and my husband loved his curries. The rice is nice and fluffy whilst the ships are crispy.The decor is a prominent red theme and the place is large and roomy. There are plants and statues throughout the restaurant. The music playing is very soothing along with the muted lighting.I highly reccommened you try out this place. I order takeaways here when I don't come in with my husband. Both are equally good!

Service is quick and snappy- always given a complimentary dish of prawn crackers on arrival. Good choice of drink and a huge choice of dishes.The curry and chow mein in particular are very nice to eat and so are the black bean saucee dishes. I come here all the time and they also do delivery too. The takeaways seem to be bsuy all the time- no wonder because the food is top-notch!Decor and atmosphere is great too. Highly rec.

Sadly this place doesn't seem to have many sit-ins. Not sure why that is but I feel sorry for those who miss out because the food is scrumptious. I come here with my wife on a weekly basis and service has always been consistent. The service is always friednly and snappy. Food comes quick and piping hot.The food is always of a high standard, fresh and packed full of flavour. The atmopshere is also good with nice chinese music and red oriental decor. I love this place and there seems to be lots of takeaways and deliveries. However I urge people to sit in to get the full experience!

Pass by this place a lot but I was invited here by one of my friends for a meal. The decor is lovely with an oriental red theme. There is also nice traditional orchetstral music playing whilst we eat and the lighting is softly muted- which I loved.Service was quick and friendly- drinks were served fast and food was delivered shortly afterwards. The menu has lots of dishes to chooses from- we opted for the Kung Po and blackbean dishes which were a treat! Piping hot and full of lfavour the food was.There is also a dessert menu but we were full so we passed on that.Seems to be very many takeaways and deliverys but not too many sit ins which is a shame as the food is fab.Toilets were small but very clean just like the whole place. I would recommened this place and come back eagerly.

Visit this nice restuarant a lot for the past few months ans the food has been a a consistent high quality. A large range of fairly priced dishes which are sreved piping hot & quickly. Kids loved the food too and service is friendly as usual. Facilities are very clean and decor is lovely. Also has nice range of deserts from ice-creams to fried treats. Cannot wait to go back this week! Just shame that it is usually quiet for sit ins as it is a lovely place with great food.

I only went to the Kweilin for a takeaway. I have to say the service was excellent and the premises itself were spotless. I have to say the decor of the restaurant area was really nice and I would have had no qualms in actually having a meal on the premises. I didn't find the food outstanding or fantastic though. The prawn toasts were really really greasy, so much so that I couldn't eat them all. My husband's chicken and mushroom dish looked nice, he thoroughly enjoyed it but I wasn't overly impressed with the deep fried chilli chicken I had. Again I felt it greasy and heavy but the sauce was nice. It tasted like a bog standard Chinese takeaway.

Great food although a little slow on delivery, especially when i live less than 5 minutes from the place. Only ever used the takeaway side of it, never sat in the restaurant. From what i have seen most people use the take away service instead of sitting in, never seen anyone in the restaurant

we used to stay in gorebridge a few years ago when this restaurant first opened it was amazing back then, the service was very good and staff friendly, we popped back in the other night for a take away and we could not fault it was brilliant and amazing you should really go for a nice relaxed meal here!! One of the best chinese around!! by far!!

I just passed by this restaurant and was feeling hungry after a long day of work, so I decided to pop in a for a quick takeaway. As soon as I stepped in I noticed the lovely red oriental decor whcih was beautiful.I ordered a chichken chow mein, friend rice, chips and of course...curry sauce! I only waited for about 15 minutes and passed time by reading the nicely supplied newspapers. The waiter was friendly and the food came quickly. The food was full of flavour and tasted fresh, unlike most chinese restuarants' food which has that "old" taste as if it had been left in a freezer for 12 months. The chicken chow mein had a delicious taste, filled with crunchy bean sprouts and lots of succeulent pieces of chicken, I would definitely go back for more!The chips were cripsy and not the usualy soggy mess, the curry sauce is just fantastic. It tastes like authentic chinese curry but has something that separates it from other curries!Great vaule for grest food, try it some time!

We popped here for tea whilst staying at Kirkhill Mansion. The service was spot on and the food was tasty and fresh. This place may not be that busy with sit in diners but they obviously do a large number of takeaways judging by the amount of food coming out of the kitchen. Clearly a popular choice.

Visited here between xmas and new year. Food was some of the best Chinese food we've ever tasted. Service was excellent and no-one continually pestering you or taking away plates before you'd finished. We find this a problem when dining in Chinese restaurants. Tastefully decorated and nice welcoming atmosphere. Very reasonably priced. Couldn't fault it.

Food is always good here and the service is excellent. It never seems to be busy, which is a pity - go try!
