Kirin Chinese Food in South Cambridgeshire

beeen going to Kirin on and off for the last 3 years, honestly foods been great, even if it has gotten abit pricier due to the inflation, really recommend the chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce, and the special rice/noodles always hit the spot, if you can do take the prawn crackers (huge, tasty and fresh, hard to find such beauties anywhere else)

Personally I'd say this is the best chinese takeaway in cambridge. Singapore noodles are amazing!! So much flavour and a good level of spice! Even though I've moved from the area and it's not local to me anymore I still if in the area will go to this chinese for its great food! The lady serving is super friendly and very polite. Always a pleasure to speak to her. Would highly recommend this place!

Had the king prawn fried rice and at a great price

Tried the Kirin for the first time last night. There was a steady stream of customers ordering in person or ringing and collecting orders but service was friendly and quick and food prepared without unreasonable delay. The place looked spotless. We ordered black bean chicken x2, pepper squid, noodles with bean sprouts and onion, egg fried rice plus some crispy seaweed. With the exception of the seaweed (which was crispy but strangely sweet to our taste) the food was great. I am not Chinese but previously lived in Singapore & Hong Kong, so have eaten a fair bit of Chinese food in my time and think that I am able to make an informed comparison. The food we had from Kirin was pretty good and we will go again. Oh yes, and absolutely no problem at all paying by card!

Solid low pressure food for that comfy night in. Word of warning, they don’t stand out next to the Coop and I drove past at least once, but they are there on the map more or less exactly where it says they are. I’m not sure if call it “cheap”, but energy costs being what they are they probably aren’t making much of a profit. I had the chicken in black bean sauce, egg fried rice and large (as opposed to mini) spring rolls. The chicken and spring rolls were solid, nothing to write home about but no complaints. I have to say though, the egg fried rice was _amazing_. I don’t know how they did it but it blew me away. The worst part was having to drive home with the smell of the prawn crackers, of which they kindly threw in a massive bag. Staff were super friendly and ordering was pleasant. They’re also open all afternoon on a Saturday, which simplifies things for us who are out and about earlier. I was a bit dubious after a bad experience with a different local Chinese take out, but these guys have reaffirmed my faith in the local take away. I’ll probably be going back on a semi regular basis.

Basic standard “Chinese” menu that hasn’t changed in at least 20 years. It’s cheap and cheerful and quick. Unpretentious and decent enough, if somewhat unremarkable, and a Fulbourn institution it most certainly is.

Ordered a meal from this place last night. The chicken meat in the house special were uncooked (still pink). The fried rice were cold and hard. Never come again . Don’t waste money here anymore!!!!

The worst take away I ever had. Do they really know how to cook? Better off to have a pot noodles instead.

We have ordered a few times now from Kirin and really enjoyed our meals. High praise for the beef in black bean sauce, amongst other choices. Very fresh, flavoursome and good cuts of meat, with plenty of meat in the sauce. Very generous portions too.

Our local Chinese, great food and great staff. Always look forward to a Kirin.

Tomé una comida para llevar desde aquí hoy la primera vez que lo intentamos y no volveremos. Pidió pato crujiente y estaba realmente crujiente, casi sin carne, todo era piel seca y crujiente con algo de carne seca. El curry de gambas estaba viscoso y las gambas tenían un olor extraño, como si hubieran estado sentadas un rato. La carne de chili crujiente estaba bien, al igual que los rollitos de primavera, pero para 38 fue una decepción total y cuando llamamos para avisarles, la señora respondió que si no le gusta la comida, ¡no regrese! ! Quería una cena rápida, así que entré y pedí albóndigas de cerdo a la parrilla y salteado de pak Choi. Sorprendidos al descubrir que solo aceptan efectivo, debería haber un letrero en la puerta que indique claramente esto. Cuando abrí los paquetes, las albóndigas estaban claramente HERVIDAS, no a la parrilla, y el "pak Choi" no era el verde oscuro que conocemos del supermercado, sino el repollo blanco chino (hakusai) o simplemente el repollo blanco inglés. Volví a preguntar si me habían dado el orden equivocado y ella dijo que la palabra pak Choi es la palabra china para ese blanco. ! ! ! ! Lo tomé, pero no volveré allí ya que no puedo estar seguro de que lo que se anuncia es lo que obtendré. ¡El menú se ve bien, pero no es lo que piensas! !

Had chicken curry and fried rice here, the fried rice was not fried. It was most definitely boiled and the chicken in the curry was slimy like it had been coated in something and it was still pink in places. Don’t know what part of the chicken was use but there was no chunks of meat, they were all flat. Needles to say but there was upset stomachs all round the following day. I would never go back there which is a shame as it’s quite close to us. It was not cheap either, it cost a small fortune and I wished I had returned the food but after a long day at work I couldn’t be bothered taking it back so it all went in the bin. I honestly don’t think the owner would have bothered if I had returned it as he’s the only Chinese in the village and people just seem to put up with crap!

The old owners had the best Chinese takeaway in Cambridge but left and for some reason things changed and now its just ok.

I ordered duck in plum sauce and got duck in sweet chille sauce and I called as it did not say on the menu it had chillies in it like having no nuts in it for example. They said to me that the chef said the plum sauce is not nice so he added chillies sauce to it to make it taste nicer. Omg that's the way to do it. Just make nice plum cause because what they had done could have caused someone some serious problems. Not good at all.

Appalling!!! Beef?? Questionable!! Virtually raw in both the curry and the chow mein. Curry was like gloop on a spoon and chicken balls were burnt on outside and raw batter on the inside. BBQ pork was like cardboard and flavourless. Overall the rice was the only edible item. Will never use this place again.

Found bits of chicken in my portion of chips! Not very happy as I’m vegan and do not believe in eating animals! Very bad cross contamination, be aware if you have an allergy!

Haven’t tried the Kirin for about a year as my last one wasn’t great but thought we would give it another go. When I called and they said it had changed owners I was a bit sceptical but Have to say it was the best Chinese I’ve had in a long time! Looking forward to having another one! Shame they don’t take card still.

Having relied on the place for many years my previous review expressed my extreme disappointment with the new owner's standards. However, they seem to have got a decent chef in now and the takeaways are not bad. Portions are smaller than previously but the food is now almost back to the way it was. It is however patchy. At times I've had soup that was tasteless and watery but most dishes are OK now. I assume some cooking is occasionally undertaken by less competent cooks. Still only cash taken which is annoying. Must be honest though, it is improving after a very bad start.

I had heard that the Kirin had changed owners, so though I would give it a go. Glad I did, the food was delicious, and tasted wonderfully fresh. I had the salt and pepper prawns, and my mum the salt and pepper squid, both of which are our favorites, so a dish we had had at many a Chinese restaurant, and this was the best we have ever had. My step dads usual of beef chinese and sweet and sour chicken, was also very yummy. Highly recommended!!

Well we have had varied meals here since it changed hands. They only take cash now, which is fine for us, but must deter some, at least you can get cash from the co-op next door. Our latest meal was really good, the shredded chilli chicken was great, we have found the beef version a bit soft at times, it should be crispy! Never had an unpleasant meal, just sometimes not quite there, and sometimes enjoyable, hence the 4* rating. Jolly handy to have in the village, and always friendly enough fast service.

the chow mein is great and very cheap, definitely recommend. Fried bananas are also a delicious dessert, i'm obsessed with them

The Kirin is a staple take away for us when friends and family come to visit and we've been customers for 4 years. The food is always delicious and they make the best prawn toasts, loaded with prawns - the speed in which our orders are turned round is amazing - 10-15 mins wait maximum. Yes there has been a change in ownership, and to take over such a successful, well loved business can be really tough, but they're doing brilliantly, the food is delicious, the service is as friendly and courteous as ever - what more could you want. Oh and the cash only thing, yes it was a bit of a shock when we pitched up with empty wallets - but we got over it (there's a cash dispenser next door).

Have used this takeaway most weeks for years and years. It was very good food, and well run. Went in yesterday to find new owners. They would only take cash, not cards, (though this may be temporary.) More importantly, I had the worst takeaway I've ever had from the Kirin. The food was greasy and in some cases, burnt and inedible. Very down-market cooking. I threw quite a bit away. Won't be going back. Can't see how they are going to survive with these standards.

Good standard food and lovely cheery service from Tina. Most dishes great in fact. Would have been 5 stars but very occasionally the ribs can be a little tough. However that is a small point and we are very lucky to have this takeaway in Fulbourn.

Good quality Chinese take away. The service at the desk and on the phone is normally good. The food is always very good, and has maintained that standard over several years. Never disappoints.

Nice late night take-away to end a summer day's cycling. Chips with curry sauce. What could be better? Stopped here while cycling back to our B&B late at night.

The portion sizes remain generous but the food seems to be different from what I recall. Maybe a change of supplier or a different chef...Complimentary bag of prawn crackers, which I don't generally eat anyway, so they get fed to the ducks. But a nice touch for those that do enjoy them. Service remains very good and would use again.

I thought I'd try the Kirin in Fulbourn. We placed our order and were told it would take half an hour. When we arrived back after 40 minutes we were still waiting for our order. What seemed very odd was the fact that people who had seemingly ordered after us were reviewing their food before us. On getting the food I thought the Sweet and Sour Pork Balls I ordered were quite dry. The mixed starter was very good. Not sure I would order from there agian.

Lovely chinese food. The lady at the front desk always gives us free prawn crackers and our kids a treat! Wouldn't be the same without her!!Plenty of parking to go and pick up and right next to the shop. The only problem being they don't deliver!

We ordered a take-away for six on a Saturday evening. We phoned the order through and drove the ten minutes to the shop. The shop is in the High St, and there are parking spaces in the lay-by right outside. Our order was ready when we arrived. All the dishes were perfect and we were given free prawn-crackers and some free ribs. We will be using the take-away again in the future.
