Fantastic fish and chips. So much so that we're off back again tonight. The chips and onion rings are to die for with everything freshly cooked.

The atmosphere is always good with locals and walkers - good craic. Almost forgot the real ale which is always being changed. Proper village pub at the heart of the community with an amazing landlady !

Food wasn't great - one up from frozen really. Had steak pie and the portion was small filled mainly with congealed gravy and 3 small pieces of steak and one lump of fat, and the peas were uncooked. This cost £15.95 and did not warrant the price for the quality of the food - can get this sort of thing in Asda for £5! Disappointing as reviews are misleading and was expecting a nice quality meal for what I paid for it. Other diners wanted Sunday dinner but had sold out and everything else seemed to be of limited availability. Sorry but wont be going again.

The staff at this pub are amazing! Our wedding lunch was cancelled the day before due to the new tier restrictions. On a recommendation from the owner of the holiday cottage we were staying in we tried them for a last minute takeaway meal instead. Apparently they do not normally do this at lunchtime but as soon as they heard it was for our wedding they immediately agreed with very short notice. Choice of food was brilliant and all was absolutely delicious....home cooked, hot, good sized portions (and puddings were particularly good!)Without ever having sat down in the pub I would recommend it to all and when we return once Covid restrictions are lifted, we will certainly be looking forward to a visit and meal “inside”!Thank you again!

Spent a week in Bowness-on-Solway and the Kings Arms had been recommended to us by the owners of Solway Cottage. Our first impression driving past was that it was just a small pub and didn’t look anything special - how wrong were we!The owners, Pam and Annette along with their family were some of the most welcoming, nicest, friendliest people we’ve ever met. We ate in there on numerous occasions throughout the week as the food was just excellent. All the meals are home prepared and cooked with the chips being some of the very best we’ve ever had.All in all we want to thank Pam, Annette, Sammie and Meg for making us feel so comfortable and wish you every success with your new venture.

My son and I drove over to Burgh on Sands, then on to Bowness for lunch. The mist and drizzle spoilt our chance to admire the views, but at least we had a fine lunch at the Kings Arms. The staff were extremely friendly, very professional and diligent re virus safety, and the meals were excellent. I had fish and chips which came with salad and mushy peas, and my son had steak pie with the same trimmings. Apart from the quality there was plenty of it. My son thought the real ales were decent (not great), and I played safe with Peroni (always good).

Decided to do a walk round Drumburgh and Glasson which should have been 5 miles however decided to do a detour to the King's Arms in Bowness on Solway. Rang up with 3 miles to go to check pub was open ( as 2 previous were shut) and serving food. Spoke with a lovely lady who told me they stopped serving at 3pm but, as we had done a long walk, would ensure we got something to eat. On arrival met with a friendly face and served great sarnies and chips with nice pint of Wainwrights. We came in this pub 8 years ago when we walked Hadrian's Wall and everything has been updated. Lovely pub and great staff, thanks for looking after us.

Many people end or begin their Hadrian’s Wall journey at Bowness and tourist money is beginning to trickle through the economy of this tiny village. The Kings Arms was for a long time the only option but is now in competition with Hunters Bistro. We booked KA because they answered the phone and were pleased with the choice. Sammie the main cook fully understands dairy free and gluten free and it‘s good to be able to order with confidence. She’s also super-cheerful and has her heart in her job. The fish and chips was delicious. The pub also sells the Wall passports and T shirts, and had all its COVID protocols sorted out.

Despite living nearby, I'd never visited this pub until now. Parking is a bit of an issue which we expected, but we found a spot eventually. From the moment we walked in my whole family felt very welcome, what a lovely atmosphere this place has. It was busy due to the 'Eat out to help out' scheme but this didn't affect our experience at all. We ordered a mixture of mains, one of which was the trio of minted lamb. I must admit, it was a little pinker than I would cook it myself, but my word it was divine. The chicken goujons were amazing (so my teenage daughter said anyway), and we all commented on the quality of the home made chips...yum!We will definitely be back again soon.

As the sole pub / eatery in Bowness on Solway, the Kings Arms must hoover up pre and post-Hadrian's Wall walk trade. The food is suitably sustaining - plenty of pies, steaks, and traditional pub fare. I enjoyed a tasty - although volcano-hot - lasagne served with chips and garlic bread in an orgy of carb-loading. Prices are extremely reasonable. The décor is old-fashioned and the pub permits dogs, even in eating areas, which might not be to everyone's tastes. However the King's Arms served its purpose more than adequately.

We had come into Bowness to start our Hadrian's Wall Walk. We wanted to experience a "real English Pub". When we opened the door to the Kings Arms we had stepped into what felt like a construction zone. All of this disappeared with Megan's fabulous service, cheerfulness, hard work and a pint. She was wiping down tables and assured us all would be set back to normal by dinner time. As we sipped our beer she was friendly, answered our questions and was a wonderful hostess. She was right. By dinner time the place looked like the thriving pub it is with locals and walkers all being tended to by the very cheerful and helpful staff. We told everyone we came across that was heading West on their walk, "Stop at the Kings Arms and say hi to Megan from the Canadians!". We are grateful for such friendly hospitality to start our walk off in such a wonderful manner. When construction is finished to their addition I imagine the Kings Arms will be an exceptional place to stay as well!

The place wasn't busy and I got a quiet table, scrounged some reading material, and looked over the menu. I'd had standard pub fare for most of my stops along the way and decided to go with the special of the day...Lasagna. It wasn't bad. A local ale rounded out the meal. It remained quiet 'till I was ready to leave and I was able to overhear the local gosip as the bartender and barmaids chatted nearby. Nothing fancy, not too expensive, food was hot and good and in good quantity. What I needed having finished the 84 miles of Hadrian's Wall that afternoon.

Beer good and service lovely. Afraid that's as good as it gets. Pub very dated and tables a little 'sticky'. Food adequate but of no quality. Shame as the village craves a little quality as many tourists in area for Hadrian's Wall Walk. Hope there's an investment in pub as it could be a goldmine.

As the only pub at the end of the Hadrian's Wall Path the standard of food on offer was very poor. Reasonable atmosphere but there was very poor choice and the absence of any other choice in the village means complacency has seriously set in here.

This was to be frank a bit of a time warp. It was the venue for the celebration of our End of Wall Walk dinner, but after some very good eating experiences along our route, this was just pub grub from the 70s. No complaints about the food, but it was nothing other than the completely ordinary. The chips were good. The chicken curry, home cooked, was just bizarre.I don't want to give the impression that we were misled in any way, but I think that the pub trades in its way of operating on the fact that it is the only restaurant in town. And at the end of 16.5 miles from Carlisle, we were in no mood to look elsewhere. This I a shame, because I imagine that, as a business opportunity, there is considerable scope for development here. Hadrian's Wall walking will become increasingly popular as overseas holidays become more expensive. Yet people are prepared to spend more if what they are buying is seen to be a quality product. The welcome that we received was genuine, and the beer was good. But do not expect a banquet.

Good pub grub. Cozy with lots of Hadrians wall walkers and locals. Pretty much the only place in town for lunch, dinner and drinks.

Lovely home style food, lots of it and very friendly staff. It was recommended to us by the owner of the Shore Gate House guest house.

We had fabulous and wholesome delicious meals here and a thoroughly enjoyable evening with great beers and ales. We look forward to revisiting in the near future and once again enjoying their welcoming hospitality.

Nothing wrong with the welcome in the only pub in the village, nor the bar food on offer, which was properly cooked and wholesome. The choice of beers on tap was a bit limited to summer ales, if I recall correctly, but this probably changes later this year. A good honest pub, nothing fancy but perfectly satisfactory for drinks and food.

Had sandwiches and a pint here for lunch. Very good. Thick door-step sandwiches and they did a half-portion for our 6yo son. Worth a visit.

No choice but to eat here if you don't want to drive anywhere but the food was OK with large portions. Vegetables were a bit overcooked but it's a nice pub in a lovely remotr viullage.

A really quaint pub and the food was really delicious. The beef pie and the chicken Kiev was gorgeous. However, this review would have been very different if the landlady hadn't been on her toes and saved the situation all because of a waiter who really had no idea. One of our group ordered the gammon, egg & chips which arrived cold and really hard to cut. So we sent it back saying... If there is a hot piece of gammon available just take off the cold meat and replace it with a hot slice. The waiter returned with the same plate which still had the cold gammon and my fellow diner was told that he could eat the cold one for now and a new one would be arriving soon. So there he sat for 8 minutes with the egg and chips getting cold, a very unhappy diner! We were NOT happy..... until the owner arrived with the new meal and realised what the waiter had done. She was soooo apologetic and honestly so!I'm glad I'm now able to write this excellent report about the food because it was so yummy but it could have been so different; all because of an untrained server. Hopefully he'll be given a bit more training on how to read a situation with a "paying" guest. I'd happily eat here again.

The best dog friendly cafe in the lakes. Gorgeous food and the warmest welcome. This is our go to place when walking in the north lakes. All of the food always hits the spot but the cakes are just gorgeous!

Thought we would give this place a try as we saw it when coming back from Lodore Falls a few weeks ago and thought location was good. Booked Sunday lunch for 2 adults and 2 teenagers as a pre-Christmas family lunch out. On arrival no one greeted us and we waited in line at the bar to be told, not shown to, which one our table was and to come back to the bar to order. This is fine but at hotel restaurant I would expect staff to come and take our order - main course Sunday lunch £24.95, burgers the kids had £21.95 so not cheap. Inn on the Lake Glenridding for example is less expensive and far superior in location, class, service and food quality. I ordered roast beef and when it arrived I actually got lamb - no problem mistakes happen - but it did mean i had to wait for it to be replaced whilst the rest of my family ate their meals. When beef arrived it was dried out, as if heated under a grill. No one checked on us during the meal but asked if everything was ok when they came to clear. I told them my beef wasn't great - half of it uneaten - and they said i should have told them and they would have replaced. Fine, but bearing in mind i had already waited for it to be replaced once and eaten after others had finished i didn't really want to go for round 3. My meal was removed from the bill but the experience for a family lunch out was spoilt. We were in the restaurant area that doesn't allow dogs but close to the open doors to the dog friendly area - I love dogs but the smell coming through wasn't pleasant from time to time, especially when eating. Generally i think it is expensive and disappointing for what it is, pub type service and food at restaurant prices. £9.50 for puddings for example is excessive for the environment. A shame as location is great to stop for lunch if walking around Derwentwater but I wouldn't recommend based on pour experience today. As a final comment the staff did seem genuinely apologetic.

I visited Oilys with family and just after the meals were served my brother had taken ill. One member of staff in particular was so helpful and attentive. Part way through the meal we had to leave to take my brother home and the same lady offered to box up all our meals for us as we had only started. Excellent service. The meals were delicious and it is just a shame we had to leave early. Luckily my brother is okay and we will have to go back sometime for a better experience.
