This used to be an amazing pub about 10-12 years ago. What on earth has happened. The beer to be fair, was fine, 3/5 CAMRA rating. The clientele, Christ. By the pool table stank of BO. 4 guys openly doing coke on the sink the toilet (regulars), and talking about it in the pub. Pool table, decent 2 years ago, awful now.

Me and my girlfriend walked to the door and asked to come in, bouncers asked for ID and £100 from me for entry "haha" bouncer humour we just handed over our ID's. They accept my girlfriends no problem and she goes ahead but for mine they both look it over and say "it's fake or not you in the photo" which makes no sense as it's either fake or not regardless of who's in the photo but they couldn't even tell me which it was and just fully declined me entry. Assuming at this point it might still be a "give us £100 for entry" type joke as it would be crazy idiotic to not know if something is fake or it's somebody else I ask if they're being serious to which they say they are and they threw my ID on the floor which cracked the corner and agreesively invaded my personal space in an attempt to Intimidate me. These two bouncers were gigantic oak trees of men and they were being confrontational and agressive to me whilst trying to get my girlfriend in alone and were visabiliy unhappy that she followed me away from the pub. This behavior is completely unacceptable and is just straight up bullying.

Popped in here back in June 2020 after cycling part over local trail. Got in early doors ....12ish sat at handy round table with our panniers by us out of the way of the rest of the customers. half an hour latera couple of the locals arrived (this was midweek ) One of the men asked if he could sit with us. The rest of the large pub was empty bar one customer on the other side of the pub.. We were must have been sitting in their customary round bench and table. After he was given a refusal two other men arrived and sat at the next table making racist comments which my wife and daughter picked up on, They also began coughing and sneezing into the air, possibly because they must of heard of Covid 19. We therefore took our time to finish our drinks as more customers arrived and stared to fill up other tables. We thanked the Barkeep who was very good and commiserated with her that she had to put up with these tyoe of people every day as basically she had to see them every day. Most awkward. Not been back there since even though we are in the area 9 to 10 times a year for various reasons.

I like visiting pubs of all types when visiting a new town. On my visit here there was a raffle and competition taking place which was pretty noisy so I sat outside instead. Probably not a pub I would take my partner, or visit again if staying in town.

On arrival asked to find somewhere to sit by some unhappy old man behind the bar, it was our first visit so not knowing which direction to go in a half filled pub wasn't a great start! Found a table, which hadn't been wiped down! waited around 10 minutes at the table no one came, so went to the bar, and the old man screeched table service go and sit down and wait, informed him we had waited patiently for 10 minutes, he muffled something which I didn't hear. so I sat backdown to discuss with my friends to head somewhere else. 5 minutes later, a lovely lady came over to our table to take our order, very polite and very apologetic for the waiting time, and explained she had only just arrived on shift. straight away realised the table was not cleaned and swiftly took care of this, and replenished mats too. Had a great sense of humour, and knowledge of drinks available and also provided substitutes if it wasn't available. Following our order being taken our experience changed, prompt service, from the lady who then informed us of the staffing structure, and that she was the landlady, and stated Paul was the landlord, which was the old rude man we were greeted with on entry! The pub became busier during our time there, the landlady kept on top of our refills, and was polite and humorous each time, despite being rushed off her feet, as the landlord had taken a seat for nearly an hour playing on his phone, and ignored several other customers requesting drinks! The landlady was apologetic for the waits and was taking a crazy amount of orders, yet still kept up and people appeared happy. After finishing up and leaving the landlady thanks us for our custom, and also recommended other local businesses available for drinks and food which was nice to see that local community spirt! We returned back a few days later, young girl on shift who looked exhausted but was polite when taking our orders. landlord walked past us on his phone, we managed to get his attention and asked if the landlady was around, to which he rudely responded no she's not, what do you want her for?! We responded that we felt she was really good at her job and gave off great energy to the atmosphere, he frowned stating I wasn't working and walked away. Clearly has an ego issue!! After an hour or so the Landlady did appear, and came over to say hi, and even took some of our orders despite it being her night off. Had clearly took notice of our group as she remembered our drinks order and humoured things from our previous visit, which was a really nice personal touch!! unfortunately our departure ended on a negative note, purely due to us ordering a round of drink for last orders, 5 minutes received them we told by the old man to drink and leave as he was closing up, again extremely rude!! Highly advise they get shot of that old boy and let the Landlady run solo, as the atmosphere when she's not around is very depressing and unwelcoming!!

Me and my 2 kids holidayed in Bideford for a week from Manchester and my son who's 14 wanted to watch the football game so the day before the match I called in and asked if children are allowed in and what time they are allowed to stay, is the pub child friendly and the staff assured me that it was very child friendly and they would be welcome to come in and watch the game. I asked a few times are you sure it's ok for kids and was told yes definitely. So on the day of the match me and my 2 children called in, ordered soft drinks and sat down so my son who loves his football could watch the game. The landlady approached me to tell me it may get rowdy and swearing which I said if it got too bad I would leave with them, what I didn't expect was having to leave after 20 minutes of arriving because one of their regular customers who was sat on the next table started shouting at the top of his voice for any f@#$ing Manc b@$#rds to leave the F@#king pub at once. He was vile and disgusting with his behaviour and language, he was a older man so should of known better. Very brave of him behaving like that in front of a single female with my young daughter and teenage son. Needless to say we left pronto. He was well known to the staff so must be a regular. I certainly won't be returning to this pub/guesthouse again in fact this experience has put me off taking my kids in any family friendly pubs/guesthouses in the future.

I think I can clarify some of the points in the previous reviews, the waitresses are great nice an friendly, the fish and chips was disappointing straight from the freezer but I think I know why it's not quite right, I overheard some locals saying it used to be a rough old place but it had been done up so as for the land lady she's probably the same one and doesn't understand criticism and how to use it to make the experience more pleasurable so make of it what you will, my food and beer was ok nothing special but it did the job.

I can quite honestly say this is the worst food I've ever received in a pub. The Kings Arms sits on the quayside in Bideford a 16th century watering hole that is nicely situated to attract passing customers and could do so much more with a revised menu fresh local produce and a chef that isn't deluded to think he's Gordon Ramsey and over charge for a salad. Freezer boxed cod and chips to fryer to your table at nearly £10 Where you could go next door to Mr Chips and get fresh cod and chips for £6.50.Also a small bowl of frozen chips is going to cost you £3.95 Overpriced junk that is unpalatable and if you think that's bad for chips half a roll with lettuce, tomato and 2 slices of over cooked back bacon for just under £12.00 it makes you want to phone up the rip of Britain team . My best advice is avoid the kings Arms like the plague The only think this place has got going for it is the young lady that served us found her to be attentive, sociable. And friendly such ashame the food. Price and cooking has let her faultless serving down.Currently I have 25,000 to 30,000Readers of my reviews on Trip Advisor I really hope every last one of them never considers dining at this establishment. And one would hope the owner takes criticism constructively and takes appropriate action to resolve these matter.Mr Michael CollinsNantwichCheshire

On a nice day you can sit it front looking over the River Torridge or if you prefer there are plenty of seats inside. The Chefs board basically the same as the menu. But be warned if ordering a starter & main they will be served together? Took us a bit by surprise with the table full of food and a race to eat it before it goes cold! They aren’t able or wont deviate off the menu! Met up with a family group for drinks and lunch... weather changeable so at first asked to eat outside... the staff kindly rearranged the tables to seat 9 of us. We were totally disorganised but the staff were calm, took our drinks order then returned to find out what we wanted to eat. By this time it had started to rain so we all went inside and again the staff moved tables to accommodate us. The food came out promptly. It was all well cooked and tasty; particularly the mussels which at £7 were a bargain, in a cider broth. One of our party had to return their bike before joining us so we asked for their food to be kept warm in the kitchen; again, there was no drama, they were just worried the food would be spoiled, however, it was fine. This is a friendly and clean establishment in a lovely location overlooking the river. I would recommend it for a good value for money lunch.

This is one of those ancient pubs that’s been around for centuries and is situated by the west side of the bridge over the Torridge. It’s all olde-worlde inside which I rather like when compared to the formulaic and antiseptic managed chain pubs that blight our country.Unlike most pubs in the town it opens at 10am and serves breakfast. Strange pricing on the brekkie…£5.10 for a single Full English or £5.50 for a double Full English. Not wishing to be churlish I went for the large and an equally large G and T to wash it down. (I make it a rule not to drink anything stronger than gin before noon.)We ate outside at the tables to the front and enjoyed the view towards the river. The food arrived promptly and was hot and good. We stayed for a couple more drinks, enjoyed the sunshine and chatted with other grockles. All in all, a pleasant start to a day in Bideford.

Yet again we went to the pub on a Saturday night and left almost immediately. As ever the customers were of our age group, people, mainly couples in their 40s upwards. However, as ever, the pub was being run for the satisfaction of the young bar staff, playing very loud, repetitive rave type music. There is nowhere to escape the music and have a conversation. Added to that the staff are clustered together talking and are invariably reluctant to serve you. We are regular visitors to Bideford and we first went in the pub over ten years ago. Under the previous management it was a friendly, busy pub, full of locals enjoying a convivial evening. Now it has all the ambience of a sixth form common room. Granted, the pub does have a better atmosphere in the day - so why can't this be replicated on a Saturday night?

We stayed here one night b&b. If I could have left I would have, but I had a couple of glasses of wine so could not drive. We had paid upfront too, so did not wish to lose our money. The bar shut very sharpish at 11pm, they were hurrying us out, so we went upstairs. We then heard the staff on the phone to their friends (our room was directly above the bar) inviting them for a lock in. We then had to sit up all night listening to them argue, swear, shout, say really offensive stuff and it was so loud they might as well have been in the same room. They were disgusting. The room was very basic, no way worth the money, pretty poor facilities, and we are by no means posh or snobby and very used to roughing it! We were very annoyed. I did pop down to ask if they could keep it down, but they were too drunk to care. it was supposed to be a treat of a night away and it was a nightmare. I felt very sorry for the lady woh came in to do the breakfasts. She was very nice, but very slow as she had a lot to do on her own. Beakfast its self was fine, but we were in no mood to enjoy it. Ruined our weekend away. They really should not run this place as a b&b, I think as a pub it's fine.

We should have left straight away when the bar maid/ manager ignored my request to have a glass full to the top with ice to go with my reorderlig cider. When paying nearly £5 for a bottle of cider I expect to have it the way I request it. This mistake would normally be rectified by putting more ice in the glass but before I had a chance to ask for more ice the cider had been poured in the glass. However I ordered food for the family. Frozen lasagne and fish fingers for the child. I didn't let the boy eat the fish fingers when the came as they were cold and grey and looked like a dog chew. Not nice at all.Food all over the floor, smelly toilets and drunks standing swaring at the bar.

Back to Bideford for another walk around and looking for a pub in which to have a good meal...after about an hour we ended up back on the quay and went into the King's Arms (and was that a lucky decision!) We were fortunate to have found an empty booth to sit in and decided on the omelette and their Indian curry. Bar staff terribly busy with the crowd at the bar, but friendly and helpful all the same. I myself had an excellent Lager & Lime (so many times the taste of lime just isn't there) which was pleasing. Being meals are cooked to order you'll have a bit of a wait but it is so worth it! My omelette was delicious, oh so good and it comes with a good sized salad and loads of chips and every bite was wonderful! Hubby's curry? It was the hottest curry he's ever had! And that made it the best curry he's ever had! We enjoyed chatting with the chef herself and gave her our rave reviews! If you are in Bideford and after visiting all the wonderful stores and shops you simply must have a meal and a sit down at the King's Arms on the Quay!!

Been to this pub restaurant a few times now when we have been that way, a really friendly place and the food is great. The fish and chips are lovely and the portions are generous, if you are in Bideford I would pay a visit. Friendly staff and used by the locals I would say.

We stopped in here for a hot drink on a cold rainy day. We ordered 2 cream teas. Oh my dear life.. I was in a bit of shock with them costing me nearly £10 but when they came we understand why.. 2 teas with extra water and 2 scones each with plenty of cream and jam. We loved this place not only for its lovely cosy atmosphere, aswell the fact that both our dogs were welcome and fed treats by the pub manager lady. Thanks that was a really nice touch.

8 of us plus a baby decided to eat in this pub on the last day of our family holiday. What a BIG disappointment it turned out to be.We had to wait an hour before our meals arrived-no joke with an 8 month, 6 and 9 years old children. We felt proud of the way the children behaved when they were feeling so hungry. The meals arrived and what a complete disaster it turned out to be -one person had ordered beef curry but was given chicken. He complained and was told that the beef curry had all gone. He agreed to accept the chicken and after a wait was given his money back.My daughter had ordered steak with salad but was given steak and chips-.this was exchanged. I had ordered pate which never arrived until I asked what had happened to it! My daughter is an ex pub manager and works in a restaurant so knows the standard of customer service which should be given . We all felt badly let down and sad that the last day of our holiday should end like this-especially as the sun had come out and we were sitting inside. It was our first visit to Bideford and if this is the type of service which is the norm.then it is most certainly the last!

I visited this pub last week whilst on holiday with my family, for dinner. We chose the pub mainly because they allowed dogs in the bar. The bar staff were very friendly and helpful and the pub had a nice atmosphere. The food was of an average standard and of varied quality. I had the cottage pie which was tasty and seemed home made but my brother had the plaice and it was obviously frozen and not fresh. I would probably not recommend this for food as there are lots of better alternatives in the area but would recommend for a few drinks.

We were told about this inn by our friends in Bideford. I was surprised it wasn't in any of the hotel comparison websites like booking.com or Laterooms, as it is in a great location on the riverfront. It is also good for pubs/restaurants nearby- well within walking distance to most night time places of interest. The pub itself is very popular and a good pub to use for drinks and evening meals. We called a few days before Easter , not expecting any availability for the Easter weekend, as we had left it quite late to book, but we were pleasantly surprised that they did have a room available, at a very reasonable rate! (£70 per night)Tea and coffee are provided, as well as towels. There was a lovely view over the river-we watched the sunrise up over it.The room had an ensuite bathroom, with a full size bath. Plenty of storage space for clothes. The tv had freeview, with a very helpful list of what channels are available, and what numbers they are.Breakfast is from 8am-9am, with a lovely fried breakfast. We didn't need parking but its only opposite the hotel. The only problems we encountered were that the room, especially the bathroom was a bit cold and that the ceilings were quite low in the bathroom, so my other half who is tall couldn't stand up fully to shave or shower, but that is due to the old building.

It's obviously a very old building, but the inside's been altered enormously - no more tiny drinking rooms, no more "dottles" littering the floor, no more drunken sailors with parrots, no more press-gang - the pub's gone respectable, like everywhere else, it's more or less open plan, and what sense of the past there is comes largely from old photos on the wall. Cider OK. Can't say anything about the food because I didn't eat there. Ditto the rooms because I didn't sleep there. Staff friendly, but I got the impression many were brought in for the season. Customers respectable holiday-makers rather than locals. Position excellent, right in the centre of town, across the road from the river and the famous bridge, round the corner from St Mary's and near where buses stop. If you want to sit by the river, far better to do it here than risk your life on the "footpath" by the river wall, dodging skateboarders, cyclists, people with wheelie-bags, etc. What's more you can get a drink.

I ordered a Ploughman's lunch and was very disappointed to be served a soft, cotton-woolly textured bap type roll. The waitress, all smiles, cheerily asked if everything was OK and I commented on my disappointment with the bread. She was all apologies and said she'd refer my comments to the manager. The lady-manager came over to hear my complaint and was quite combative in her defense of the meal to the point of being rude. Quite clearly she had no idea, or maybe didn't care about good customer relations. Left a nasty taste (excuse the pun!)

First impressions the pub looked a little dark and dingy but we were pleasantly surprised, it is a typical old English pub.We sat in the window which was nice and spacious for all of us.Menu was a typical pub menu was had a good variety to choose from and the food was very good.Bar staff very friendly and helpful, gave my 5 yr old nephew a picture to colour whilst we waited, very welcome! Had a good experience here and were made to feel welcome would definitely go back.

We were looking for a lunch time snack while travelling around Devon and came across this 'olde worlde' pub on the quayside. My crab sandwich was delicious and came with a light salad. My husband had a bacon and stilton cheese baguette; if the baguette was warmed the cheese would have melted slightly and been even more delicious. The staff were very friendly and the whole atmosphere was warm and cheerful. Can't comment on the beer as we had tea, but I would think it would be good (plenty of regulars in!).

Stopped by for a few drinks and some food last Saturday. The staff were good and the drinks were fine (if a little over priced) but the food was basic pub food. I had a burger which tasted like I got it from the kebab shop around the corner. Was average for the price I thought.

The Kings Arms has stood on Bideford Quay since Grenville, Drake and Raleigh drank there. There is a good selection of local ales, as well as cider. We stopped in for a coffee and bread and butter pudding - which was excellent. If you're in Bideford check out this bit of real history.

Just popped in for a quick drink - great location on the quayside and very friendly female staff. However, very tatty interior - scruffy net curtains and cushions - making it very dingy. Personally not a place I would eat in!Whoever owns/runs this is missing a trick.

We ate here a few months ago and it was ok not really inspiring, we re-visited last week and were very impressed, there was menu with plenty of choice and also a set menu for £20 for 3 courses, we ate of this and it was brilliant, lovely dishes, presented very nicely and the service was much improved also.

Service very good. Food excellent value, also Weatherspoons tries to buy locally produced food if possible and also ethically farmed food, RSPCA approved. Quite comfortable, but can become noisy. Good coffee. Toilets upstairs... quite a long walk if in a rush!

Last Thursday, I ordered a Black Forest hot chocolate and specifically requested it be made extra hot with a foil lid to keep it warm. However, by the time I reached my car, removed the foil, and went to sip my drink, it was lukewarm. Despite the staff assuring me it was extra hot, it wasn't. Perhaps the staff should focus more on meeting customer expectations rather than chatting about non-work-related topics."
