Just had lunch here. The pub itself is large, nicely decorated, spacious and comfortable. Unfortunately today there appeared to only be two staff on duty trying to managed a busy Friday lunchtime. Due to a large queue at the bar, my friend and I both ordered our food, separately, via our phones. She orders two starters as her main and I had ordered the set lunch deal. Her's arrived ok and she enjoyed her food. When my food didn't materialise, I realised the kitchen had made a presumption about the two starters, so I asked for my main ti be brought out. Even though my friend ate really, really slowly, my food didn't arrive for a good 30 minutes and she'd finished hers by then. I had the catch if the day. It's wasn't great. Hard, greasy peas (I presume they were supposed to be buttered), the chips were a little al dente too and the all of the 'Catch of the Day' was quite greasy as well. And then I waited for my pudding. That took at least another 30 minutes to arrive after my plate was cleared. We won't be in a hurry to return.

Hate writing negative reviews but my feedback to staff fell on deaf ears. I ordered steak sandwich which was the worst steak sandwich I’ve ever eaten - bread was sodden and limp, lambs lettuce looked a week past its best and chips tasted like they’d been cooked in very old oil. Tough steak covered in a nasty sauce which obvs made the bread wet mixed with slimy mushrooms. Staff couldn’t have cared less. How can you get something so simple so wrong!

Lunch today Friday 14th Feb was great. I had chicken schnitzel it was delicious and the chips were plentiful and lots of salad too. Thank you King Will.

Lovely place, good food and good value for money

We came in for food at lunch time and was greeted with a warm welcome and then proceeded to have, excellent food which was piping hot and very tasty, really good service, friendly staff, was served by someone called Ethan, who made sure our experience was really good by having good chat. And was very patient when waiting for us to pay the bill with struggling to go through the vouchers, we will be back.

Honestly, it's one of the best meals I've had out we will be giving back. 10/10 A++

The portion size for the festive menu is a bit on the small side.

We held our office Christmas party on Fri 13th December and the evening worked out very well. We were allocated the space at the end of the restaurant (for about 20 people) so there was enough space for everyone to circulate and sit down when the festive buffet was served. The food was plentiful and tasty - definitely good value for money.

I came here for the first time and pub was lovely and the food was lovely but the attitude from the the staff was shocking… i came with my sister and my 2 kids and her two kids..ages 2 year olds 4 year old and 11 year old… the youngest children were excited too see each-other so as you imagine alot of excitement happy screams jumpin etc… the man with the pigtail was getting so annoyed and told us that level of behaviour is unacceptable.. he then continue looking at the kids talking about them to the staff and was counting to himself 123 as if he had to control his anger… the waitress older woman with messy bun walk past my child stood still and threw her hands up in the air and shook her hand because my 2 year old child walked infront of her… my kids were not behaving badly just excitement.. my sister then called her other half to come get her 2 years old daughter because she felt she couldnt have here there as she screams with excitement… the kids settled and ate their dinner and was no bother before we left my 4 year old pulled his chair out… and the waitress said to him “you best put that back because if an old person falls over you be in the world of trouble” also the waitress brought my main dinner out with my starter which i said i dont want my main now im eating my starter for her to get annoyed about that….. food was lovely but the staff are not welcoming they are rude and ive never had that bad customer service before

We were a party of 15 for our Xmas meal. The food was excellent, they managed to get each course out at the same time, waiting staff were really good. All the staff were very welcoming and friendly. I would highly recommend excellent in every way we will be back. Thank you

One of very few pubs serving chicken wings with chilli or bbq sauce with added bonus of sizing for £12 (enuff for snack for 2 adults & 2 children) If eating with children turn left for seating, children not allowed in bar area.

Staff was repeatedly rude (man with pigtail in back in restaurant hall). I have no other way to explain this rather than discrimination. Just in case, be aware that the attitude to you in this pub may depend on your background.

Servers are very friendly and the quiz night has a very fun atmosphere

We attend weekly for the quiz and food. The service is always good. We have a regular booking as we have a wheelchair user with us. Jill looks after us very well.

We love the quiz and the pub, we are here every Wednesday, Anthony is a great quiz master. Staff are great and WE LOVE JILL! She’s the best. Food is so delicious (chicken wings especially) and there are loads of offers on the Ember Inn app, highly recommend.

Always used to come to the Wednesday quizzes so we popped in after a rainy walk and the kids ate, portions were fab, lots of menu choices and good value.

I have always found the food good at the King William, the facilities are clean and everything works. The staff are uniformly cheerful and helpful.

This is the best local pub in St. Albans, I come here a lot with my family and friends. Atmosphere is nice and staff are lovely. Ash is an amazing character and looks after everyone who comes to the pub!

Shambles, the female bar staff was rude, abrupt and spoke like she never wanted us there. Said she was short staffed but not our problem. Will never be going back

What a lovely place had family down for the weekend so booked a table here well so glad I did as the whole evening was lovely thay couldn't do enough for us we had a three course dinner all mouth watering the staff was so friendly and helpful really recommend this place

My wife is allergic to shellfish and fish, we were served by Ashley who very correctly asked if there where any allergies and took my wife through the questionnaire. He then went to the kitchen to check if the batter for the haloumi was used for fish, which it was. he told the kitchen to make up a fresh batch of batter for my wife's meal. Absolutely excellent Ashley. Both our meals were very well cooked and delicious. A big thankyou to Ashley and the chef.

Booked a table a week in advance with special request to have table for 4 in main dining area near the fire. Got confirmation of booking but on the date the booking was not recognised by the landlord.

Friendly and good service. We were asked about allergens. Chips with the main course we're soggy bringing food score down. Atmosphere score fell because of screaming child at nearby table.

“Un-dog friendly” pub which is ok with not sorting out 2 dogs in 2 separate cars barking their heads off in their car park with all windows closed in June…

Manager walks around with a sour face. Not very welcoming at all constantly stares if your ina big group. Wouldn't waste your time going there.

The service was excellent we were made to feel very welcome Food was very good again. Only disappointment was the Eton Mess. No meringue and squirting cream so not up to usual excellent standard.

Breakfast with Santa ! I booked this online on 23rd Sept 2023 and paid for 6 people. I was called to say they weren't doing this event or hadn't been informed they were ? on 3rd Oct I cancelled the booking. I am Still waiting my refund ! I have telephoned about 15 times, I have sent an email to customer services,I have sent a good old fashioned letter by post all to no avail. I was informed they refunded me on 16th November and sent the receipt (I have asked if they are using the HORIZON system !) of which did NOT have my card details on. I was informed 2 weeks ago that the area manager would contact me ( ticket no. 66574947 ) but again I have heard nothing ! I am an extremely busy person and do not have the time to keep chasing this. PLEASE can someone look into this matter and refund MY money . This has gone on for 5 months now. I can honestly say this is unacceptable customer service :-(

Dreadful Front of house man was lovely but the food was awful we ordered all food to come at same time ,BIG MISTAKE !!! Firstly my friend chicken skewers came and was dry she waited a while for her chips my side of garlic bread came before the pasta main i ordered it with then we was told 5 minutes ,,!!!! After 5 minutes i asked why she had not even got her chips , Bless him he was told by the kitchen something was broken !!! 🙁 what the fryers ?? Then my dinner came it tasted nice but the presentation was awful and most of the pasta stuck together ,I asked what the chef was doing and why such a catastrophe but no answer from the kitchen we ate our food and left ,usually its okish for cheap and cheerful but i certainly will not go back ,,But a big thankyou to the young man running round serving at bar and serving food he was great ,but the food not so great

Thank you we really enjoyed our visit to your Restaurant on Quiz night. The mushrooms were spectacular, The steak cooked to perfection and the Belgium waffles a real treat. There was a nice atmosphere and the service we received from Jill Edwards(I hope I remembered her name correctly) the assistant manager was top notch! Full marks to her and the chef, and the staff behind the bar. Professional, helpful and pleasant. A fine evening enjoyed by all.

I came with christmas party. Despite fact that all dietary requirements were aknowledged, and gluten free option should be included as stated by organiser. The only food available for gluten free ( I am celiac) was a plain ciabata roll. All meals and other stuff was with gluten.

A Christmas meal for 12, superbly pre organised and great communication with staff. Food arrived all together, amazing food and plenty of it.

We had our staff Christmas party at this lovely pub yesterday and I can't recommend it highly enough. We had our own area which was great as there were 11 of us and we had plenty of space to move around and mingle. We ordered the new Christmas buffet menu which was amazing!! (Highly recommend this). All dietary needs were catered for. The food was high quality, very generous portions and the vegan options were perfect. The pub is beautifully decorated and felt very festive. The staff are all super friendly, helpful and welcoming. We loved it and will definitely book our staff party at the King William again, especially as the buffet menu was so good!

Don't go if you have to be gluten free. No menu showing gluten free items.

The food as always was very good and decent sized portions, there were five of us, my Mum and Dad, my Son and my two Grandchildren. The waitress we had Catherine was very attentive and was extremely helpful and polite, she comes highly recommended.

Staff need to greet customers with a smile Manners an courtesy go a long way in Hospitality. They may be having a bad day but don't take it out on the customers. Food good but portions too small.

We regularly attend the quiz at the King Will on a Wednesday night and are never disappointed. Great tasting, value for money food. Good customer service and a nice atmosphere.

A nice enough place let down by not having any draft ale at all. Four beers were unavailable, two because no-one on the staff knew how to change the barrels. Had to settle for Guinness, whose tap is hidden as the landlords would prefer you buy one of their own beers.

We enjoyed our lunch and the only improvement I can suggest is a slightly healthier menu, eg more salad choices and new potato options. I didn't find any healthy desserts either. I was pleased to see the calories listed on the menu.

Not impressed with the food very small portion and very expensive. Won't be going there again.

Spent a few hours here. Pleasant pub. Polite and friendly staff. Food was perfectly fine. It was a quiet period when I was there so hard to really judge the atmosphere. Would return again if ever local.

CONS: We had Sunday lunch. Broccoli, carrots and parsnips were undercooked and had too much bite. Not enough gravy on initial serving. I had veggie Wellington and although I asked for Yorkshire pudding I didn't get any. PROS: Clean, good service and good range of beers including low alcohol.

Great setting, friendly welcome. Delicious food of amble amount. Good value for money. Easy to access and park without having to faff about entering reg numbers. Very attentive staff with non intrusive manner. Really enjoyed my visit. I'll be back.
