King Loui's in Cheshire West and Chester

Warm and welcoming as soon as we arrived, lots of food choice and the kids meals were great value and a lovely surprise to include drink and a treat. The chips were the nicest we have had in ages they were hot, fresh and not greasy .We will definitely be back if we visit the area again!

Came to the chippy, looking forward to a nice chips cheese and gravy… very disappointed to get home and find out the chips have been changed to fries. Also undercooked too,

Fish was very greasy and the chips were awful. Mostly bits of chips and nearly all had black bits in them. Very disappointed sadly

Last time we were at Loui’s was about 32 years ago when the original “Loui” was there, it was always the “go to” chippy in the area and I am delighted to say that it’s still a cut above the rest, being run by Louis’ son. We were going to a show at Tarvin Community Centre so decided it was a Fish and Chips in the car for supper before the event. Service is exceptionally friendly, their online ordering system looks well used and efficient (we didn’t use it) , there were youngsters serving who were under training, and were obviously going to be great “front of house” with a smile and nothing too much trouble. If you are into a Fish Supper (or anything up to and including Squid!) , then there is no better option for you in the area (quite a big area!) Finally they have Stokes Tartare Sauce available to purchase, it’s the best ready made you can buy (in my opinion) Great !

Never ever had a bad experience here! The place is spotlessly clean! The portions are very large but the food is cooked fresh and is excellent quality! The staff were all extremely friendly, the main man offering chips to customers whilst they waited!

Very warm welcome and great chat while my fish was being prepared - you know it’s fresh when you see it being cooked - could have ordered online to save the short wait, but didn’t know how long it would take me to get there. Very surprised at some of the comments about the staff - they were very friendly and welcoming- making sure that I was made to feel welcome and even trying to ‘downsize’ the large chips - the portions are very large, especially when compared to other fish and chip shops I have tried. BUT the main point is that the fish and chips were perfect - my go to fish and chip shop is the Magpie in Whitby - this one is certainly up there with it, but a lot closer!

We regularly visit King Louis chippy and recommend to everyone. Not only is the food very good and portions are very generous - the staff are absolutely excellent! Everyone speaks to eachother with respect and they never seem to flap even when it's busy. They always have a smile. I always leave a small tip as well, but I've not seen many people do this even if I pay by card I take a few ££ to put in the wooden box on the till. I think service like that really does deserve it and would encourage everyone else if they are happy to do it! Very very good and will absolutely keep going back.

Excellent fish and chips. Let down by poor service. I ordered online. To be collected at 18.40. I didn’t leave until 19.20. And paid £1.75 for ordering online. The owner was very apologetic to everyone - but how about at least refunding the service fee? It’s a Saturday night. Easily anticipated custom, especially when your food is so good. Employ more staff, or pay a higher rate for more experienced staff? So, in conclusion, I would def visit again, but place my order in anticipation of it being ready to go, in 30 minutes before I needed it. You cannot charge £1.75 extra for a service you cannot meet. Good luck with your staffing issues.

Absolutely fantastic service, as always. I ordered my food online and I received a phone call to say my food was ready, I had put the wrong time, entirely my own fault, I was an hour late collecting it, when I finally arrived the owner had done the whole order again so my food was hot as he said ‘I couldn’t take cold food away’ thankyou and will definitely be ordering again.

Looking at the previous two reviews it appears the issue with this establishment is the owner. No point going into the detail but the episode with him resulted in an aggressive and totally unjustified outburst whereby I was accused of being a blatant liar. The owner is obnoxious and obviously full of his own self importance. After the incident he attempt to apologise and even admitted I was correct but the damage was done. Been a regular customer for some time but after this episode never again. To justify his apology the owner did say the reason for his reaction was because he gets stressed frying the fish. I tried my best not to laugh. If that’s really the case he should just go and get a life. No respect and you have just lost yourself around £50 a month in takings.

Having been a regular patron of this establishment for over six years, and having always been incredibly impressed with the quality of the food and the service. I was absolutely appalled by the way I was treated at king louies this evening. In fact I was so stunned that I found myself lost for words. I have never been spoken to so rudely as a customer. Whilst waiting in the queue behind a lady and her daughter, I was asked if I wanted any small fish cooking. I replied, that I’d prefer a large fish if ready. To which the proprietor snapped “ I asked if you wanted any small fish!!” I presumed he had misheard due my mask and let it pass. However when I finally got to the counter to be served by the young assistant, the proprietor proceeded to aggressively tell me that “there was a queue”… . I was somewhat confused by this statement as was the young chap serving me, as the statement made absolutely no sense in the circumstances… I was the only person in the shop at that point. So, just to be sure I’d heard correctly I asked “excuse me?” to which he responded with a more aggressive - “you need to understand that there is a queue!”. Now if there were several people in front of me waiting, or if I’d jumped a queue to begin with, this might have made some sense. However i had not. And even if that had been the case, there was no absolutely no excuse for that level of rudeness. From outset I was “welcomed” with a high degree of animosity, which was totally out of character to the normal reception received there. Even the young chap serving seemed shocked by the owners behaviour. Maybe he just got out of bed the wrong side.. But Needless to say, after being a regular customer for years, I will not be going back. Signed… Deeply saddened and disappointed

Phenomenal food and exceptional service. It was my first time at this chippy since recently moving into the area and the Manager welcomed me to the village in such a friendly and humorous manner - he’s quite a character! I ordered my food and whilst I stood outside with my Wife, 2 kids and the dog, we were given a free tray of chips and a couple of sausages to basically snack on whilst we waited... the manager said, “take this as a welcome gift from us to you, we hope you enjoy whilst we sort your order out”... What a nice way to be greeted! When we got home, the food was insane. The fish was HUGE, the batter was so light and perfectly cooked and the chips were spot on... this has got to be the best chippy I have had in a long while. Credit to the whole team at King Louis, they seem a great bunch of people. If I had one ask, I wish they opened maybe earlier one day so that I could treat myself to a chippy lunch, but nevertheless, I’ll be back in the evenings! Keep up the good work 👌🏻

OMG, it's frankly impossible to rate King Loui high enough- staff are amazing, nothing is too much trouble and the fish n chips are crunchy light batter on chunky white fish coupled with fluffy on the inside, crisp on the outside chips, just the way they should be - am also slightly partial to the curry sauce too 5 stars 🌟 are not enough!

I have been going to this chippy for over 5 years on and off. I travel from chester to enjoy their food. Over the last year there has been problems with my orders, but I didn’t complain or leave a negative review due to Covid and taking into consideration they maybe under a lot of pressure. Our Friday ritual is to order food and collect curbside for the family. I always get the fish dinner which has onions and mushy peas and gravy. I’ve always received the gravy and peas in separate pots. Tonight my peas and gravy were placed all over my chips and the onions were missing. My partner called and was trying to explain we have never had our food like this, the manager started to shout at her and passed the phone to me. His attitude was they have served the dinners this way for forty years? Odd as I’ve never had the dinner served this way, I prefer to pour my gravy on and peas bit by bit, that’s how I’ve always eaten the dinner and enjoyed it! He just hung up the phone on me. A big shame as we will never use this King Louis again, I’m sure his father wouldn’t of hung up.

The food is always great. Never had a single complaint. Portion sizes are huge! The staff are all so lovely and polite. It is always a nice touch when they remember you by name. And to think that they are now working during a global pandemic just so I can get a quick dinner? You couldn’t ask for more.

Excellent Fish 'n' Chip shop. We use it regularly. The fish is wonderful & we always request "lightly battered" Nowhere else does fish likeKing Loui. They also do great Pies, Curry, Chicken etc

I spent ages writing a worthy review on TA and it wouldn't progress my review... So I try again! Fabulous food and service. Having been a regular prior to retiring we always enjoyed a treat fish chop supper from here. We returned whilst in the area ( not far really) to be greeted with such courtesy and reverence! Take note other business providers thus us TRUE CUSTOMER SERVICE HERE!Quality of good was delicious ..tasty not greasy, light batter ..sooo yummy. Staff and the owner(?i forgot his name...shameful! I shall call KING Louis Junior!! We had speedy 'personal' service, and observed his skills at customer service and courtesy you don't see enough of theses days TOP MARKS!! Nice friendly staff and excellent food - good prices too! My son and I popped in whilst visiting the area and needed a quick dinner - KingLoui gave us just what we needed (big portions too)!! Highly recommended.

This family run business always has friendly staff and come once or twice they will remember your face and welcome you as friends. The food is good and portions big. Would recommended if you are craving a good fish and chips

Been out with the dog and kids at Delamere. Always wanted to try this place so stopped in on way home. Brilliant service, and food cooked fresh. Can't fault it. Well worth waiting to try it.

As a local I've been using Loui's for 30 plus years and I have seen it in its hey day and its present day operations as the "Chipee" has been handed down to sons of the owner King Loui himself. Less of the history more of the review ques out of the door at weekends prove that it is still popular however it is above averagely priced and can be a bit hit and miss not as consistently good as it was drawing customers from miles around but and this is a but when its good its really good. Good luck choosing the right day to visit.

Been going to King Loui's since I was a teenager, and this may have slightly factored into my decision to move to Tarvin! Such a shame they're not doing Chinese food anymore as that was sensational too. Hopefully it'll return one day.

I would travel miles for king Louie's fish and chips they are the best in Cheshire the family and staff the best in the business

Called this evening. The food was faultless, well cooked to perfection. Fish was one of the best I've had. Customer service was first class and many outlets could learn from these guys. Well done and keep up the good work. Will be back!

Desafortunadamente, acabamos de tener el peor pescado y patatas fritas caras. El maltratado en el pez era duro y gomoso y el pescado en sí era duro. Los chips grasientos y flojos. Para colmo costó 18. 00 para 2 chips de pescado y 2 potes de curry. El pescado se veía y sabía como si hubiera estado parado durante años y se hubiera endurecido. No volveremos

Undercooked chips, over cooked fish with loads of batter and hardly any fish. So disappointing as it is the only chip shop in the area, I would rather starve than waste my money here.

very strange place. bad atmosphere cold, unfriendly staff. not to mention the slimy undercooked chips. I couldn't eat them and felt sick from the few i managed.

Incredible customer service and very friendly staff. Arrived after a 4 hour train journey and hadn't eaten for 8 hours, so they offered me some chips for free while I waited for my food. The chips themselves were far and above the best chippy chips around; perfectly fried and soft on the inside. I wouldn't choose to buy from anywhere else.

Absolutely diabolical, opened 40 mins later than advertised. Still got kept waiting for another 20 mins, then get told he had no peas. Chips were undercooked. I won't be going there again. I think I'd rather take a 1/2 hour trip to chester. Arrogant staff too.

Visited king Louis for the first time in several weeks after once being a regular visitor. We ordered two fish and two portion of chips. The fish was beautifully cooked, so tasty, very large in size and tasted so fresh. We had to wait 5 minutes for them to be cooked but was happy to wait and was provided with some chips to snack on why we waited on the counter. The chips again were very tasty as always. Would have took a photo but we couldn’t resist divining into them when we got home. Looking forward to visiting again soon. Keep up the good work

I go here every so often for a supper treat and I've always enjoyed the quality of food they make at King Loui's, the staff are always very friendly and chatty too, it's a fun place to go to! I can't recommend King Loui's enough!

Had heard really good things about this chippy having just moved into the area but after trying it out I was left really disappointed. The chips and peas were ok but unfortunately the fish was so dry and overcooked that I had to leave most of it. Don't mind paying over the odds if something is good quality but unfortunately this wasn't one of those occasions. If they improve the quality of fish & batter I'll be back in but in the meantime I won't be recommending it to anyone or rushing back

I am absolutely flabbergasted at the negative comments I have just read about King Loui's. I have lived in the area for 13 years and have visited King Loui's on a weekly basis since then. The prices may seem a little high but the quality is worth it! I have just moved out of the area into Vicars Cross but I am still going back to King Loui's every week as all my family and friends agree - they are the best!

Cost a bomb for food and it wasn’t very good food. For its money and the curry sauce was horriable it made me ill

Ordered fish, chips and mushy peas. Honestly I was so hungry after moving house all day I could have eaten sawdust and been happy. Pretty much anything would have tasted good, well except it seems the fish and chips from King Loui’s who isn’t even a prince in my book or a remote third cousin of some forgotten Duke given the quality of food served. The portion of fish was minuscule and swam in limp batter dripping in grease. Forget crispy this was just soggy grease. And on top of all that, expect to get a little extra you didn’t pay for the next day. Stock up on toilet paper.

Visited king loui’s, thought give it another go. They have stopped selling the medium fish now so you can either have a large fish or small one. We ordered a large fish for £4.90. When we go home we were shocked by the size of it, so small for the price, not worth the money. It was very tasty and cooked fresh but was just so small.

Most of the menu , including the chinese meals are fine, but the key to a good fish & chip place is the quality of the fish & the batter. Curled up tails on fish don't do it for me , and the batter is often wafer thin, falls off the fish and can be over greasy. Luckily for the business, the staff are friendly & the shop has a monopoly in the locality(best in the area- it is the only one!) so customer numbers stand up- Good job there isn't any worthwhile competition. I regularly visit other fish & chip shops and this is only average compared to my other experiences.

If you fancy a take away while staying in Tarvin, you can't go wrong with good old fish and chips and these were good ones. They usually sell Chinese food as well but this was not available at the time of our stay

We ordered 2 mediums cods with chips. The chips were tasty and the cod was delicious with a gorgeous batter. Prices were quite reasonable too, so well worth a go!

Took a ride out from Liverpool for a trip down memory lane. Service was second to none. The fish and chips were delicious and a small portion served two generously. Will definitely call in again!

We've been going to this takeaway for the last two years, the fish are the best for miles around, although the chips are mediocre. We've also had a couple of chinese dishes, curry and chow mein, both were not very good.

Have had fantastic fish and chips here and have also had it that has given me a dodgy stomach for days. Portion size is equally up and down. Sometimes you get lots and think its great value for money, other times you have hardly any. Others in my family and circle of friends locally have had similar inconsistent experiences.Staff wise the same. Sometimes they are very friendly, other times they can be down right rude and arrogant. They benefit from no competition in Tarvin itself - if they had some i think maybe they would improve on some of the service levels and food consistency.

On 2 occasions this week I have been to King Louis around lunch time and I was served by the miserable old fella that works there and I was in complete shock both times at how small the portions where and paying the price I did it was disgraceful how he is ripping people off, one person seen him serving me and then that person refused to order food for themselves and walked out which I really do not blame them, something really needs to be done about him

King louis is the best chippy in the area the fish is the best tasting I have ever had wonderful and a great touch they give you a few chips to try befor you buy

The "go to"chippy in the area. Best fish and the grand kids love the chicken nuggets which I can assure you are big and succulent. They also do an extensive Chinese menu, best to phone ahead.

We've been getting a Chinese takeaway nearly every Friday for years, and we wouldn't go anywhere else for it. Friendly staff, and great service wouldn't highly recommend what we've come to call "charvin"

The most amazing fish and chips I've ever eaten!!! I have travelled from Cyprus to England to visit this amazing Fish and chips shop and i am absolutely excited with this food.

Recently moved to the area having visited King Loui's many years ago in the past. What can i say? Superb food food, cooked with pride, friendly staff who go out of their way to make you feel welcome, all cooked within a very timely manner. Will be visiting here for many years to come!

Been to King Loui's a few times over the past year, never been amazing but edible and convenient as just down the road, however today's visit was the final straw! I rang up and placed an order for collection of chicken fried rice, beef and black bean with egg fried rice, salt and pepper chicken balls and chips in curry sauce - to our disappointment all 3 of the Chinese meals were inedible! The chicken was rubbery and extremely over cooked and looked more like a 30 year old rotted fish than chicken! The beef was incredibly thick and chewy and the salt and pepper chicken was covered in a odd red glaze and had no salt and pepper flavouring what so ever! Having been to the takeaway before we were very shocked by the poor quality of food, I decided to ring up to discuss and was even more shocked by the poor level of customer service. I spoke to 'Anton' who was extremely defensive and did not apologies for the service at all, instead told me there was nobody in charge so I wouldn't be getting a refund and when I asked for contact details of the person in charge he told me they are a fish and chip shop therefore don't have an email address! Absolutely shocking customer service, WILL NOT BE RETURNING.

I travelled out of my way past 2 other chippys to b sorely disapointed 1, with the service 2, by the standard of food . i have been coming here for years but i dout i will bother with the journey again ! The customer service was not what i expect from the place and was made to feel as if i was putting the server out , they cudnt manage a smile or eye contact . i have previously had nothing but exellent friendly service !The food ...well. Gray looking soggy chips are never appealing! And the fish was cooked althou crisp on 1 side and soggy on the other ....makes u wunder how long it had been sitting there as normally they are cooked to order ! All in all very disapointed , and a wasted trip !! What has happened to the place ??

This is the finest fish and chip shop in Cheshire, a big boast as I have not been to every single one, however I've been here for 20 years and this is my opinion. People come from 10 miles plus to take away. Highly recommended, cheerful swift perfect service. Rick

We were walking from Chester to Delamere Forest on the Baker Way trail and stopped for lunch in Tarvin. Having looked at the pubs offerings we decided on the bacon and egg bap with a cone of chips at this busy takeaway. The member of staff who served us was pleasant and friendly, cooking the egg as we requested while there were 2 rashers of good bacon and the chips were freshly cooked and actually tasted of potato.The bap was the best I've had out since Liverpool in the early nineties.We will go out of our way to go back - recommended

We were staying in Tarvin for the weekend, popped in to order for 8 people - didn't have to wait long but were given a tray of chips for free to share while we did! Everyone enjoyed the food (1 chinese meal, a burger, some chicken and a lot of fish, chips, sauces & sausages) and we also received a free bottle of coke. Very friendly staff.

Having lived in Chester since 2007 the only ethnic cuisine we have struggled to find of a decent quality is Chinese. It may be 4 to 5 miles outside the center, but its well worth the trip. The meat in the dishes is chunky & clearly comes from fresh cuts. The veg is vibrant & crispy, no MSG here. The service is excellent and we we even offered chips while we waited (the first time that's happened to me in a chippy), but opted to take a quick drink at the George & Dragon opposite.

Good quality chip shop with plenty of choices on the menu with usual offerings as well as an extensive Chinese take away menu, all reasonably priced, and good portion sizes. Closed on Sundays but open other 6 days of the week both lunch and evenings.

Used to be good and a great place to stop for a take away on the way home. But now it's excellent. I must say the best fish cake I've had in a long while.

We have been to Tarvin numerous times in recent months to visit family up there. On our first visit we were in need of a snack and shared some chips, they were so tasty! We had a side of curry sauce which was also so nice. Every time we come to Tarvin now we make sure we squeeze a visit in! This place has a lot of fans in my family!

Super friendly staff. We enjoyed a bit of banter while we waited for our food. The chips were brilliant and the fish was great too. Real mushy peas and great curry sauce. Will definitely be back. Well worth the drive.

Having just moved to Tarvin I thought I would try out this place. I've been several times now and love the friendly staff and great variety of food. Not good for the waistline or I would visit more often.

The great thing about this 'Chippy' is that the quality never varies. You can be sure of first class product and service every time...We've been coming here most weeks for many years and the fact that the same family still runs the show could be the key to it's consistancy.

A brilliant classic chippie! The curry sauce here remains unmatched by any chip shop around, it's absolutely stunning. Chips and fish can be sometimes temperamental but overall a brilliant place to eat!

My husband and I get our fish and chips from King Loui's every Friday. The fish is always perfect (crispy batter!), chips are delicious, and the staff are super-helpful.

We were staying just outside Tarvin but decided to give this place a visit after seeing reviews on tripadvisor. We were not disappointed at all and got fish, chips and a carton of curry each. Our only mistake was getting a portion each as the portion size was very favourable and we couldn't finish what we got. The curry sauce was lovely and one of the better we have had from a chippy.The staff were very pleasant too and we were served very efficiently and professionally.If you are ever near Tarvin make sure you call into this place as you will not be disappointed.

I've been to King Louie's twice now for takeaways and both times I have been really impressed by the friendly and courteous service from the team... I wouldn't normally leave a review for a chippy but the guys really deserve the praise.I agree with the rest of the reviews on the food, great fish (ask for lightly battered) and chips, Chinese meals are also top notch although could do with a few more veggie options.

had fish and chips it was fantastic,.The fish batter was so chrispy and very hot the staff were so polite and helpful I will be back again next week.

Went at lunchtime,the fish was cooked while I waited and it was worth the wait.I went three times in a fortnight and all were great.You pay a bit extra but to me worth it
