Our first visit since John & Diane took over running the KGV again - our Sunday lunch was superb. The beef was very tender, the roast potatoes were crisp and everything was hot and served to our table by helpful and friendly staff.Very reasonably priced for such an excellent Sunday roast - can't wait to return.Highly recommended!

Excellent quaint traditional family pub. Took my mother for a lovely roast dinner. Situated in a residential road it could have been very ‘clicky’ but this was not the case. The landlord was welcoming and his mum is a gem!! Excellent food, lovely people and felt totally at home!! Have already booked to go again

Contrary to the last review which seems unbelievably written without having actually visited the pub, I can assure you all that this pub is still going strong. As a regular, I can inform those interested that the beer range is now enhanced with up to 9 craft keg beers as well as cask. Freshly prepared Sunday roasts are 2 for £8.95 and represent great value for money. The landlord now supports live music with up to 4 gigs a week which has revitalised the pub at a time when so many are closing. B&B is now also a key part of it's success. So rather than critise a pub without actually visiting, pop in, and enjoy this great, friendly backstreet boozer.(PS The kitchen was given a clean bill of health when revisited but Medway Council demanded £180 to rescore it!)

Food was ok, hospitality atrocious. We were told on arrival by the publican Leon that he was expecting 40 rugby players in for food so wanted Sunday lunchers gone by 4pm ! Not the best reception when our table was booked for 2.15 and it is a pub that is open until late. The whole experience was uncomfortable we felt like we were watching the clock and not really wanted there, and to make it worse we were frowned upon when we decided to order dessert at 3.40 We have been regularly going to the KGV for 17 years now BUT NEVER AGAIN with him running it now or shall I say ruining it now.If you want to spend your afternoon listening to moans then this is the pub for you ! If you are looking for a nice friendly welcome then avoid this pub like the plague!! Such a shame.

Our group of 11 plus often drank here buying rounds of £30 plus - and whilst it used to smell of grease (which was resolved after a good clean with sugar soap) it was a quite nice place to go. However, last night that had a private function for Burns night ( a day late and no signs there was a private function that evening) we had brought drinks and then the managers mother came over and was very rude telling us to move as the tables were reserved (no signs on or near the tables) after we explained there was no signs she left and returned 15 minutes later telling us to move. No apology for their lack of organisation or inconvenience to us. Won’t be going there again.

I was in the KGV on Sunday evening two weeks ago with a friend and all of a sudden Leon the “Manager” went into one and kicked everybody out and closed the Pub. There were a number of customers who were half way through their meals. He slammed his till on the bar and started swearing. This was about 6:30pm in the evening. He had a band booked that evening as well. It turns out he had been duped by a guy who walked into the Pub and asked him if he wanted to buy wine from the local off licence as they were closing down, he said I’ll have £90 worth. So, he dispatched his cook with the money but when he gave the money to the First guy he was off on his toes, so he had to return to the pub empty handed. This was when Leon exploded. Its unbelievable that he reacts so badly to his customers over such a trivial amount of money. Clearly, he has no respect for his customers, to treat people like this when they are half way through their dinners.

The KGV is a real gem in the heart of Medway and sadly is one of the last few genuine real ale pubs around in this part of Kent. If you choose to visit, you will be transported back in time as you step inside, with a strong maritime theme running through the pub. The naval heritage of the venue and surrounding area is clearly celebrated via the memorabilia hanging from the walls, which makes a refreshing change from the usual beer mats and horse shoes commonly found in similar types of pub. So as you sit sipping your pint, you do find yourself wondering who was sitting in the same place a couple of hundred years before. The best time to visit is on a Sunday evening, where you can catch folk musicians having a jam together, creating a rather unique ambience which is all too rare in the pubs of today. The beer on offer is excellent, with a good range of draught beer from a wide variety of local breweries. In my opinion, this is the primary reason to come to the pub. Leon, who manages the KGV knows his beers and is great at helping you to select a beverage which will be to your liking. There are also a great range of scotch whiskies, gins, rums and Belgian beers which should not be missed.

Unfortunately Denise’s Famous Sunday Lunches are a thing of the past, but you do have to hand it to Leon he does keep a regular turnover of staff to keep things fresh, not worth learning their names as they probably won’t last, same as his beers, for a real ale pub he has a disappointing selection, he prided himself on Kentish produce when he started but for some strange reason he no longer seems to favour the garden of England’s brews and prefers to import from Sussex and further afield. Some say he won’t last but I have a feeling he may last longer than some may want. The friendly atmosphere has evaporated since he now has a new “management” consultant (his mum). I’m afraid not the pub I remember.

Went here today for Sunday lunch with the family and we were not disappointed. The welcome was really friendly and all the staff were lovely. Good sized portion of meat and potatoes and then pretty much as much veggies as you can eat which are brought separate containers full of broccoli, cabbage, chunky carrots and cauliflower cheese. We were asked if one was enough and we asked for another which was no problem at all. We also were given a jug of extra gravy which was very welcome and I got the impression that we only had to ask if we wanted more. All in all it was very good for the price, the bill came to just over £40 for five of us and that included drinks. If I had to be picky I would say that home made Yorkshire puddings would elevate the meal to a higher standard however the rest of the lunch was so nice that we didn't mind a frozen Yorkshire. All in all we were very impressed and would definitely go back again. I could barely finish mine and we were certainly well fed. Thanks for a lovely lunch.

The landlord of this pub organises a yearly local beer festival which we attended a month ago. The festival programme included an invitation to visit the pub and obtain a 20% discount on food, for up to a group of four, on production of the programme. This we did and we were not disappointed. The roast Lamb and Beef was expertly cooked to a succulent tenderness, accompanied by crispy golden roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and four veg.,all washed down with a brilliant pint of Harvey's Best Bitter. It proved a difficult choice when it came to dessert, we really wanted to try them all but finally settled on Sticky Toffee Pudding and Custard. Great choice! There is a great deal of naval memorbilia on the walls, so should be an attraction to anyone who served in the Senior Service.

A local recommended this pub. Your small traditional English pub. Luckily, considering it was a Saturday evening, there was table room for our party of 8. The staff was very accommodating with our orders. The menu is very basic which you would expect for a pub like this. The only negative is that the menu does not cater for vegetarians. One of our party is a vegetarian and as there was no options for him, we had to ask the chef if something could be rustled up of which the chef obliged, making jacket potato, cheese and beans. There is also no desert menu either. There was background music but it stayed just that 'background', allowing myself and my party to be able to have conversations and not have to shout over the music to be heard. The food took nearly an 1hr for us to receive our food BUT the chef did say she was on her own and did pre-warn that it might take some time which we accepted. Once the food arrived, OMG!!! it was delicious, especially the mash. Everyone in the group commented on how lovely the mash tasted and I have to admit, it was the best mash potato I have tasted in ages. Everything was cooked extremely well, all plates were empty except for the odd few garden peas lol (they do not serve mushy or processed peas). The drinks we had with our meal was very good. Overall it was a very pleasant and enjoyable evening, food and drinks was excellent with a very decent price to match.

As we had travelled there anyway we decided to order food, one steak burger, two omelettes and chips. There was about six people in this pub, after about an hour we asked where was the food and the barman stated it was coming, after an hour and a quarter we asked has he forgotten about and our lunch break was only so long and now we will have to make the time up in the evening again he stated the food was coming, again after an hour and 25 minutes we asked again to be told probably another 10 minutes. We had to leave and get a refund without lunch all afternoon. The is no direction or customer communication in this pub it really soured what should of been a pleasant get together, not sure what the food is like but my advice is to avoid at least the lunch time session if you have less than a two hour lunch break

Apart from the obvious antecedents scattered around its old walls, The "GuV" ex Radio Kent celeb, specialises in an astonishing cellar of Belgian Beers, more than twenty premium bottled ales up to 13%aba and all at around £3.50, a bargain as you sip them ruminantly over an hour in its premium glass. I cannot laud the landlord too highly as he hates kissy kissy. His other peccadillo is his Caribbean rum nights where real white, pale rums are sampled at a degustation night. Its very much a small locals pub some don't come in mob handed. It was the officers area and rude behaviour from the lower ranks (aka plebs) would be meted with the cat. Its a pub to treat like fine wine. Some old farts might regale you with tales of the mad Pole and his crazy wife many years ago

Hot food is available while the pub is open but a big selection of dishes is served each lunchtime and evening. The Sunday roast is so popular you could be disappointed if you don't book. Also offers rooms to let which include a four-poster bedroom which overlooks the village green and a family room with a double and a single bed. The bar area is decorated with naval and military memorabilia as it is walking distance from Brompton Barracks, the HQ of the Royal Engineers, whose officers often use the pub. There are also many links with the Navy from the times that ships from the Royal Navy used to dock at Chatham. The King George V is perfect if you are on business or visiting the area for pleasure.

I drink here regularly and always have a good time. The bar staff create a great atmosphere which then carries through to the customers. What I didn't know until recently was how nice the food is, you can tell that as much as possible is homemade I'll definitely be eating in the KG5 again!!

Based on previous reviews here on TA we turned up here on a Friday night having not been able to eat in the Premier Inn a couple of miles away.Obviously popular as quite a few people had a meal but you need to be aware that this is essentially a pub for locals and not the place for dressing up for a quiet romantic meal. One could imagine how busy it must have been in the past when the dockyard was open but it is now one of the few pubs still open in Brompton.A fairly small menu, which is no bad thing, but my wife wasn't overly hungry so she opted for a starter only, whereas I had a starter and a main course. Prawn cocktail was fine as was my baked Camembert which was almost a meal in itself. The sirloin steak was very good value and the home made chips were amongst the best we (my wife had to sample some) have ever had anywhere.Friendly enough staff but I have to say that if this is No 1 in Gillingham it doesn't say a great deal for anywhere else. Having said that, if I was ever back in the area, I would certainly be happy to revisit.

After the best Sunday Roast I have had this side of the Irish Sea I convinced my mate to come for lunch. A simple menu done really well the cod portion was amazing, the lasagne was just damn tasty and the chips were spectacular. The landlord keeps cracking ale, fresh lager and a rum, whisky wall to make you weep.

Found this pub on google whilst staying in Chatham and it was a lovely classic British pub. The landlord and landlady made us feel so at home as if we were locals. We asked for some food not realising it was too late but they still cooked us a pizza which was fantastic. Great atmosphere would definitely go again if in the area.

Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Place you can take your granny or current squeeze to. The new landlord and his wife have breathed new life into the pub. Some great music nights - a pub with a piano and some good opportunities to sing along. Good selection of real ales and ciders. Agree with other reviewer that Leffe on tap is a boon. Well worth a visit for lunch or long boozy evening with friends. Even has a four-poster bedroom for B&B if you're too squiffy to drive home (hic).

I grew up in the Gillingham area in the 80s and, back then, Brompton was not somewhere you’d want to go out in – but it’s changed so much! After a trip to the Dockyard we called in for a pint – several real ales were available and ones we’ve not heard of before, all well kept. The staff were friendly and the menu looked good, so we booked a table for later on, went for a walk up to the Lines and back, and returned later. The menu is simple (eg lasagne, steak, lamb shank, fish and chips) but the food was good with sizeable portions and good prices (steak £10, f&c £7).

April 2015. Been in before for a decent pint of local ale, and a chat with the regulars who I would describe as welcoming and amusing. For the first time I thought I'd eat here; just had a fantastic steak and chips. Work colleagues had sausage which they said was excellent, and we met the farmer who provided them! Beers were great. As expected given the landlords knowledge of local brewing. Definitely one for a return visit, and I'll include planning a meal next time. Can't wait!

Popped in as it was mid way between respective hotels for colleague and I.Area looks pretty rough to be frank, but this boozer was a literal oasis in a desert!Behind the RE Museum, it's a 10 min slog (uphill!) at a fast pace from the dockyard.Eclectic range of beers.. Leffe on draft! Yes.. on draft! (How many pubs this side of the eurotunnel can claim that accolade!) and very reasonably priced menu.8 quid for decent fish and chips. Bargain.Decor is traditional, with a strong naval leaning (which suited my colleague, a former matlock) but even a mere landlubber such as myself was made to feel welcome.Great boozer. Well worth making a trip.

This is a good option in Medway for a Sunday Lunch. Booking is advisable as it gets very busy. The food is home-made and nicely cooked and traditionally done. The vegetables are in serving dishes for you to serve yourselves which is nice. There are always meat choices available and all are very tasty. The gravy is well seasoned and again delicious. The owners are friendly and welcoming and the staff are always courteous and kind. I have not eaten here on other days so can only comment on the Sunday Lunch option.

We had sunday lunch here at an early sitting at 1pm. Beef/ lamb were the options and I have to say the food was really hot and tasty and generous servings. The pub were great at catering for a vegetarian with lactose intolerance, and were excellent in providing my vegetables separately and vegetarian gravy. The only down side was the service was very slow on that particular day - most of the staff were helpful and friendly.

I often visit this pub full of naval memorabilia from the ships of Chatham division - and further afield. My latest visit coincided with the a three day real ale festival involving the KG-Five and five other Medway pubs reached by minicoaches operating half hourly to each ale house. But it was about the food that I write. It's cooked fresh on the premises (no prepackaging), and varies day by day and night by night, with 12" pizzas, curries, traditional English salads and chip-accompanied meals.I enjoyed the luncheon of sausage and chips, but it was later in the day when I returned and ordered a pizza that the cooks came into their own. There was just one proviso that I had - it didn't do my self-imposed diet any good whatever!

Despite it's English rose style, the owner of this pub travels to and from Belgium buying collections of unique beers to serve in his pub. As pubs go this one really is unique, they have tapas, free chips on Tuesdays, pub meals, and of course a large Belgian beer menu. They have really got a wonderful community spirit yet we foreigners feel truly welcome every time.

Visited the KG5 today with my family. The group comprised of 10 adults and 4 children. The meal, which I would consider as a 'traditional Sunday roast' was outstanding. I cannot fault the quality of fresh vegetables and meat that was served by their polite and friendly staff. At £8.50 per person I would highly recommend this establishment.

Despite it being Fathers Day we managed to get a 3.30pm booking (food served til 4pm).Even though it was busy, as expected, the food was excellent and in my mind unbeatable value for money. A choice of three meats (beef, turkey and lamb), all the trimmings, great roast potatoes and plenty of veg - really tasty.Add to that the usual friendly service, a superb choice of drinks on offer, four real ales + Belgian beers etc it all added up to being a nice afternoon. It is not just Sundays that the food is recommended as there are indian (Wednesday) and steak (Thursday) nights as well as other options and menu's.Thankfully it is one of Medway's pubs which haven't changed over the years while landlord John (and Diane) put in a lot of other hard work providing things like the Medway Beer Festival once a year where real ale enthusiasts can revel in plenty of unusual choices.Keep up the good work.

The KG Five at Brompton is one of the few surviving pubs frequented by the Royal Navy, and is just a short distance from the Cannon, popular with the Sappers from the Royal Engineers barracks. The pub's landlord is enthusiastic for real ales, ciders (beware of Magic Bus!) and perries, and is a sponsor of the zannual Medway Beer Festival.Good meals are generally available (though the staff usually go home in the afternoons). It is intimate, packed with ships badges left by visiting crews and the walls are surrounded by pictures of the former battleship.
