Spent almost £100 on a special takeaway family meal. Starters were just OK, apart from pakora, which I suspect was made by someone who had never tasted pakora as it was like the sweet and sour chicken balls you get from a cheap Chinese takeaway with no gram flour or spices in evidence. Terrible. The main courses tasted suspiciously similar so I am pretty sure a base curry sauce was used, with some coconut milk added to the korma and some radioactive red colouring left over from the 1980s added to the tikka masala for good measure. They were not unpleasant but bland. The naan was all wrong too, it wasn't chewy with a slight yoghurt tang like it's supposed to be, and didn't even look to have been near a tandoor. I can't believe they are passing this off as Indian food. Frankly, it's an insult to the whole subcontinent.

Went for a meal with friends, was greeted to a black sofa and an empty counter to begin with, wondering whether it was a takeaway or restaurant where no one greeted us. Made our way to the restaurant where we were shown our table. Poppadoms and drinks soon arrived to the table. It was then a 40 minute wait for our starters which were 3 mixed meat kebabs which were tasteless and bland. My friends chicken was also pink in places which was concerning. We then had to wait another 40 minutes for the main to arrive, which brought another concern as we were sat next to the kitchen we heard the ping of a microwave 5 minutes before the arrival of our mains. I had the lamb rogan josh. The lamb was quite tender and enjoyable however the sauce accompanying was more reminiscent of tomato soup then curry and it was utterly bland and tasteless. Some of our naans were also raw in places. It then took us 30 minutes to get the bill despite asking 3 times for it and finally the ordeal was over 2hours after we had arrived. If you have any self respect for yourself or Indian food i would avoid this place as I have been throwing up since and had to take time off work after it. How this place has managed to stay open is a mystery.

We visited here as a group of 5. Popadoms were on the table within 13 seconds and the beer was cold, the only two positives all evening. We ordered 3 mixed tikka platters between 5. 40 minutes later when they turned up, the meat was wet and the coating was falling off everything, amongst the worst mixed starters I’ve ever had. Waited a further 30 mins for mains to arrive, the less said about them the better. There’s a Coop 5 minutes down the road which is lucky, as I’ve had better microwave meals. Chicken was tough as old boot and the sauce was as bland as Matt Hancock. Took us 20 minutes and 3 attempts to pay. The waiter who was taking the card payments kept making awful, awkward jokes about cards being declined, which after the awful experience we didn’t find funny. Definitely won’t be back.

Middle of a pandemic, thought we'd support a local business by ordering a take away. Appalled to see none of the staff were wearing masks. Presumably the kitchen staff weren't either? All the starters were cold, it was mostly deep fried stuff too which was terrible unless it's hot. The curries themselves were warmer but often contained entire seeds chunks of herbs that crack your teeth and shouldn't have been left in. This place used to be good but nowadays I'd recommend going elsewhere. Dunno what happened to them.

Went for an evening meal at Khyber for the first time in 18 months. We have avoided eating in until now as the last 2 takeaways were a poor standard and lacking flavour. We were hoping for better following good reviews from friends; we had fantastic looking and tasting starters, mains were not great, mono-taste, chicken was a solid brick. Lamb was ok, sides were nice. Many friends have raved about how great the Khyber Pass is but we were underwhelmed with the dishes we chose. I would go back if friends made the choice but would probably stick to a couple of starters as they were the nicest bit for me.

We had the onion bhajee and vegetable pakora to start both fresh and delicious. For main we had a chicken dish(can’t remember it’s name) which was one of the best curry’s we’ve tasted fresh and vibrant flavours, and the Goan fish curry which was spicy and full of meaty pieces of fish. Wine was good, staff friendly really good place.

Friday 25,01,19 a group of us, 7 in total, went out for a curry as part of our sociable's group. Luckily we booked in advance as this restaurant has taken Southwell by storm. We had an excellent night that was complemented by some fantastic food. The menu has the standard curries but for those if us that are more adventurous there are other dishes to tempt you. Really do not under estimate this place, sure the entrance is a bit shabby but Ali has plans to change this. The food is first class as is the welcome and service. True l think the success of this new venture has suprised Ali but he is coping. Watch this resturant as it will become the "go to place" for a curry for miles around. Go visit and see for yourself his menu offers all the normal stuff but where else can you get beef, duck, fish and rabbit curries.Thank you Ali and all your staff for a great night, great food and service. After 20 years or so of having great take aways from this restaurant we now find something has changed with the food. Not sure whether this restaurant has changed hands in the last few months or whether they have a new chef but the food is now pretty poor by previous standards. We had a very disappointing meal tonight, we won't be going back. The food has changed & lacks that real depth of flavour you expect from a good curry, the chicken tikka masala was terrible. Looks like its the Chinese restaurant or we try out the other Indian restaurant down the road. After previously recommending this restaurant to others we will now be advising them to give it a wide berth. Very disappointed after all these years.

My husband and I were in the Nottingham/Derbyshire area over the weekend visiting family and friends, while there we dined at the Khyber Pass on King Street, Southwell. When we arrived we were greeted in a friendly manner and shown to our table, ordered drinks and perused the menu. The menu was laid out in a very straight forward format such as Starters, Non- Vegetarian, Vegetarian and Seafood. The main dishes included poppadum’s and chutneys in the price which I thought was very good as in many restaurants these are classed as a starter and you pay extra for them. While we were waiting for our main course to be served we ordered a jug of Mango Lassi as our friends had never tried it before, when it arrived the waiter chatted to us about the drink and the various flavours available, he stayed and talked for a while even though the restaurant was busy making you feel a valued customer. I ordered my usual main dish as I enjoy Vegetable Korma; it’s very mild and cooked with lentils, coconut and fresh cream, my husband and one of our friends both ordered chicken Mamma Cook, which our friend said was yummy and my husband’s comment was “ok”, (with main dishes they offer a choice of either rice or salad). The Mamma Cook dish was made with chicken, tomatoes, onions and peppers and the menu said it was to create a highly flavoured dish, prior to the main course both men had also ordered the same starter another chicken dish called Shaan Tikka, this was pieces of marinated chicken with a golden chick pea batter topped with a sweet chilli chutney. Throughout our visit staff stopped at our table to check everything was ok with our meal, my main dish was a bit dry so I asked for more sauce which wasn’t a problem and within a few minutes my dish was returned with lots of sauce and steaming hot. When we had finished our meal the bill arrived with mints, Yummy, Yummy, we were offered complimentary drinks on the house and again asked if we were happy with our meal.I found the staff friendly and helpful and will be returning on my next visit to the area. I noticed that they do takeaways and had offers such as…. 2 for 1 on Mondays and Tuesdays…. offered set meals for one, two and four. Ladies toilets were downstairs if you are less mobile (sorry gents I didn’t notice where yours were). We parked in a carpark just around the corner which was free!! Opening hours are from 18.00 daily and if you wish to book during the daytime there is an answer machine to take your reservation. (We phoned earlier that day to book our table for four, leaving our contact details in case they were fully booked).

The drinks were served promptly- we are all light weights so it was soft all the way- as usual only sugarfree options were diet coke and water but the coke was fizzy and fresh and a full glass. We had popadoms and pickle tray which was lovely- smooth pickle rather than the lumpy so it was easier to judge how much heat you were going to get!We shared a platter starter and some onion bahjis which were all very nice. Some of us had seafood tali and meat tali and I had chicken tawa- I prefer the hot and spicy and it was spicy and just the right level of hot without interfering with the spicyness. It was a lovely meal and felt very unrushed and leisurely without being tardy. After stressing to the waiter that my wife suffers from a sugar allergy the food served contained tomato puree and mangoes, but following a polite complaint to which the chef was alerted our dissatisfaction was exacerbated by an ensuing argument, during which it was made clear thatwe had ordered wrongly with no effort made to atone for the restaurant's error. One mouthful of my own excuse for a Tawa dish swimming in colouring and preservatives wasenough and we were forced to leave.

We eat here regularly and always get good food. the chef specials are worth trying and they will fine tune to your taste (ie warmer, cooler, less garlic etc etc). Staff always welcoming and friendly and the owner will talk to you about the different dishes, their origins, ingredients etc. would happily recommend.

We quite regularly buy takeaways from here and whenever possible we eat in. The food is always excellent and the restaurant has a nice relaxed atmosphere, you feel rushed to finish and move on in some places but certainly not here. Highly recommended!

My wife and I together with my son and his future intended dined at the Khyber Pass. The Indian menu was varied and individual dishes beautifully cooked accommodating individual taste. For example I asked for an Indian salad with plenty of green chillis on it as an accompanyment. The chipatis were of a good size and Peshwari naans very sweet and to the taste of some of my dinner guests. We mostly had beers but my wife enjoyed a mango drink which was chilled which she considered something special. The staff were attentive and keen to secure feedback on our opinion about the meal which was complementary. All in all an enjoyable visit.

What a disappointment! In my opinion this restaurant has no atmosphere and distinctly below average food. My tandoori king prawn dish included almost raw onions and was very over dry. The prawns showed no evidence of being cooked in a tandoori oven and the dish was distinctly below average. Worse still my garlic and lentil side dish was a fairly tasteless 'gloop', didn't seem to have much garlic, but did have a distinctive taint of burnt spices. One of the worst curries I've ever eaten.I shall never return.

I've heard many brilliant reviews for this restaurant, however we either went on a bad night or this Indian is extremely overrated. Initially staff were extremely friendly and made us feel welcome however that's one of the only positives I can think of. Once sat down it took another 5 minutes for a waiter to come and take our drinks order despite the fact they weren't busy and had plenty of staff on. The drinks were poured out of a value pack bottle and were served flat, in a place like this and for around £3.60 for a pint of soft drink you would at least expect them to have a machine. The mains came out cold and when cutting into my chicken I was horrified to find grizzle and some undercooked pieces. The food was extremely disappointing after all the reviews we had heard. At the end of the meal we were also charged for items we had not asked for however when questioning the bill the manager became quite sheepish and aggressive. We will all definitely not be eating here again and much prefer the Indian further down the road as it is a friendly, good value place with amazing food!

We were taken there with friends, who have been many times before and love it but, I have to admit, I don't really know why! I'm pretty certain the onion bhaji starter were not made fresh on the premises as they closely resembled a well known frozen food supermarket's offerings. My curry was supposed to have been made with fresh mint and yogurt but had clearly been made with mint sauce! Vinegary and inedible. The tarka dahl was like a puree and was swimming in oil.In fairness to the restaurant, they noticed I hadn't touched my curry and took it off of the bill and they were very friendly and kind but I have had many curries and this was far and away the worst.

I have had 2 takeaways from here and have been very disappointed both times. The first time our meat was chewy and quite unpleasant. I decided to put that down to a bad night and risk again but our second meal was equally disappointing. The meat samosas were very thick and dripping in fat. The chicken tikka masala had a very distinctive vinegary flavour and my madras was lacking in very much meat. Maybe I am spoilt by my local takeaway in West Yorkshire but in my view this is one to avoid.

Good food cooked well, only downside i started to find was that the dishes started to taste the same, no matter what you ordered?

Having been recommended to this restaurant they did all to live up to the glowing reference from the locals ! Excellent Indian cuisine and when they say authentic they mean it !! I'm from Yorkshire, home to some of the best and the staff at the Khyber certainly matched those. Will definately be returning !!

Went there for dinner with my two daughters and wife. The staff were welcoming and the fact that they've been around since the mid 80's shows with the maturity and confidence in the delivery of their service. The food was superb. The blend of spices in the dishes were masterful. For those of you who like your food spicy and hot, I'd recommend the "Tawa".This is, one a very few restaurants, where you don't need to pay extra for your additional portions of rice! A welcome treat for avid dinners like me who look for value for money. It's just a shame that I don't live any where locally. Will definitely visit again if in the area.

This was our first visit to the Khyber Pass (though my partner did recall visiting over 25 years ago!) They were very friendly on the phone when taking my booking and even more friendly in person.Very clean tables with just the right amount of space between them for privacy.Excellent menu with a large selection of vegetarian meals as well as the staples. For starters the vegetable pakoras were sublime, so tasty and in the lightest non greasy batter I have ever had. The onion bhajas were the size of cricket balls and seasoned very well. All our food was just really wonderful and as regular Indian partakers we couldn't fault a thing and have put it on a par with Akbars in York (my fav).Even thoughbthe food was excellent, it was the staff who made our night out. So attentive, offering suggestions, chatting to us like we were regulars. By the end of the evening we really did feel like we had been here every week, as it felt very comfortable, familiar and so easy. Well done to the team at The Khyber Pass for making a "one off trip" in to a "must go again!"

Had a take away today from here, nice staff but very average food at best, we ordered 4 main courses, butter chicken… spicy? Chicken biryani….spicy? Garlic chicken…spicy? No, non of these dishes should be spicy!!! not from anywhere else, also dried chicken that didn’t taste at all like chicken. The rice was also dried and hard. We will never go back. Not good enough for £80!! If you are going to charge that kind of money for a take away then it needs to be decent!!. Not good, find another curry place

We are staying in Newark for the weekend and this takeaway was recommended to us by the hosts of our accommodation. It certainly did not disappoint. The portions were good, food was fresh and arrived hot. It was very tasty and if we lived nearby would definitely order from again :) Lucy, the delivery driver, was also lovely and arrived on time - Thank you so much
