Kerbisher & Malt in Hammersmith and Fulham

When this was previously Kerbishley and Malt I went twice and found it very average for cod and chips. when it changed owners and Became What The Fish as I had visited their premises in Ravenscourt Park twice before and found it to be average and expensive for the portion of cod and chips so I decided to visit this one in Brook Green. I had visited quite awhile ago and again found it to be average and expensive for the portion. This month Mar 2024 I visited for a take away and what a difference the portion was huge and fried to perfection. I came back a few days later and it was different staff I got home with the takeaway and found a small portion again and it not fried sufficiently batter was very pale and horrible not crispy at all and the few chips were also pale looking and not sufficiently fried, it is not worth £15.50 for a smallish fish and some chips not adequately fried enough.

Nous sommes arrivés à 20h40, on s’est fait refoulés ils n’avaient plus de poisson. Dommage pour un fish & chips. En semaine un mercredi, mais tout de même ..

It is now named “What The Fish”. I had the Haddoc with chips and a side pie. Thought it was very good, fresh and nice portion. I’ve been here before when it was named Kerbisher & Malt and frankly didn’t taste any different from todays new owners.

My landlady recommended this fish & chip restaurant in the Brook Green area but I was disappointed The fish was not a huge size but was tasty, the mushy peas were ok but the chips looked like they were the end of a previous cook Maybe I was unlucky

Lordy we have being having cod and chips from here for a number of years and was always great but the cod last time was smaller than usual but put that down to a blip but tonight’s looked more like a fish finger!!! Normally the box just had enough room for the fish but I kid you not they could have fitted 6 fish in the box so doubt I will be ordering again.

Wow! What happened to this place?! I have been eating there occasionally for many years. But my visit this week left me shocked. Their original offering was that they served really special fish and chips at twice the price of a regular ‘chipper’. And that is exactly what I experienced in the past - premium product, premium price. A reasonable proposition. But this week... same premium prices but food that is vastly inferior to a ‘greasy spoon’ type establishment that charges half the price. I was given the smallest fish I have ever seen served as fish’n’chips. It looked lost sitting in the middle of the take-away box (the box is the size of a proper fish). The batter was greasy and hollow which means they don’t know how to cook battered fish. The pot of calamari had a hidden layer of lettuce to disguise the lack of calamari. The onion rings were also greasy and hollow, overcooked to a pulp. Overall the food was bland and tasteless. A dismal experience. I have to conclude that they are struggling as a business and trying to skimp on ingredients and skilled staff. £25 for a meal that was inferior to a £10 feast from an authentic ‘chipper’. Go elsewhere!

There is no substitute for Fish and Chips, especially when it’s hot and freshly cooked to perfection, as we found today at K&M. For people with small appetites, they thoughtfully offer ‘small portions’ at lunch time, reasonably priced but still too large for us. The fish - haddock - was excellent, but for us the chips, fluffy inside and crisp outside, were the crowning glory of a satisfying, yet inexpensive meal. We loved the mushy peas and crunchy gherkin, which we shared. No production number, airs and graces, just a pleasant place for a nosh. We park our car at Tesco’s superstore just behind, following up with a bit of retail therapy afterwards.

Went here for the evening and it was one of the best fish n chips I have ever had, and Ray told us to try the fritter mushy peas they were fabulous as was the food. And Ray plus the staff were very friendly. Eugene

Da unser Hunger sich in Grenzen hielt, wir aber unbedingt noch Fish & Chips probieren wollten, haben wir uns für die kleine Portion entschieden! Zum Glück, wir bekamen einen Teller gehäuft mit dicken, knusprigen (vor allem nicht nach schlechtem Fett schmeckenden)Chips und dazu ein großes Stück Fisch in leckerer, dünner Panade. Dazu gab es hervorragendes, selbstgebautes Bier. Aufmerksame Wirtin und lustiger, freundlicher Koch und alles in einem originellen Lokal!

Dire qu’il n’est pas gras c’est minimiser un peu.... je me suis fiée aux avis précédents, je me suis déplacée jusqu’à ce petit restaurant situé dans un petit quartier sympa plein d’hôtels et la déception absolue.... Fish & Chips gras, le goût y est mais il n’est pas transcendant.... il est plein de gras... l’accueil est super froid, distant.... les prix sont corrects (10£ environ), les sauces sont payantes.... le meilleur, le meilleur non ça n’est pas le meilleur !

I ordered two portions of chips at the shop but popped out for ten minutes whilst they were prepared. I picked up the order without checking them. When I got home, I opened the boxes and both were half empty. (Could easily get both portions into one of the boxes). This was unusual, as on previous occasions the portions fill the box. I felt cheated, so I bothered to call them. It was a waste of time. The guy was disinterested, blaming chefs who sometimes 'can be more generous'. IMO, it could easily have been rectified by an apology. But they failed. Miserably.

Travelled alone and stayed B&B; nearby, didn’t order their famous fish and chips, but calamari with salad there tonight! The calamari comes with thin batter and the squid is soft and fresh. The server suggested to try the tartare sauce and it is really tasty. Good and worthy dinner!

Último día en Londres y queríamos volver a comer Fish and chips. Los calamares a la romana tenían buena pinta pero no los pedimos. Es un sitio barato pero no por ello de baja calidad, el rebozado era casero y el pescado estaba jugoso.

My wife and I were finishing a three-week trip around the UK, and we had an afternoon and evening free before flying home the next day. We opted to take the Tube to the Hammersmith stop and walked up the road to this place, which we had been to before and which we again enjoyed. There are many fish and chips restaurants in the UK (and in London itself), but this is our favorite. Great food in a simple setting.

Always super fresh tasty fish , calamari, salad and their IPA is very good, they actually a bit too generous with the chips!! Always good.

I don’t think that you can beat this place for its delicious multiple fried chips and the light batter but what we really really like about this place is that it cooks the fish superbly.

Ordered cod, chips and peas. Note you have to order everything separately it does not all come as one. Very nice decor which is contemporary. You can eat in or take away. Seemed to get confused at one point with my order as I think they thought I wanted to take away when I had asked to eat in. Didn't respond to it and they soon rectified the error and presented it on a plate. Only reason it is stopping this reviewer from giving top marks. Food was good, almost couldn't finish the plate though!

It's nice to find a decent fish and chips in London these days. Kerbisher and Malt is a fine addition to Brook Green and a great alternative to the mediocre chain options of Hammersmith Broadway.

I stopped in for dinner on a quiet Thursday evening. Service was friendly, interior space was spare and light-filled, meal was very good. The "light" fish & chips special was generous, not overcooked, crispy and piping hot. I especially enjoyed the fennel and dill side salad. Will be back!

Skusiłam się na klasyczne fish&chips.; Ryba doskonale wysmażona, domowe frytki i zimne piwo dopełniły całości. lokalik niewielki, ale poza menu plusem jest przemiła obsługa i fakt, że otwarte mają do późna.

Todo perfecto. Fish and chips muy bueno y muy abundante. Todo casero. Atienen rápido y el cocinero es español siempre dispuesto a ayudar. También tienen calamares, gambas, ensaladas.... Hay varios tipos de cervezas, una de ellas es una tipo Ale edición propia del restaurante, muy rica. El precio unas 20£/persona. Hay pocas mesas pero creo que suficientes. Una opción estupenda para probar el típico sabor británico.

Arrogant, rude and aggressive staff. I ordered a calamari lunch meal and received half a pot of lettuce and half calamari. I complained but was told the portions are always the same, they're not as I'm a regular customer (not anymore). Before the conversation ended the manager snatched the food from me and threw it in the bin and said he would give me a refund instead. This was in front of a shop full of customers. They need to treat their customers with more respect if they expect to receive any repeat business.

Entramos en este pequeño restaurante aconsejado por todos los buenos comentarios que habíamos leído sobre el, sirven el típico fish and chips de Londres,la diferencia es que es pescado fresco, es un rebozado casero, tienes un montón de variedades de pescados para elegir y está buenísimo... además de todo tipo de entrantes riquísimos. El menú del almuerzo es una gran relación calidad-precio. 6 Ish Quid para picaduras de pescado o dedos de pescado y patatas fritas. El pescado y las patatas fritas es mucho más caro. Me encanta la comida crujiente pero a menudo es demasiado crujiente, especialmente las papas fritas, prefiero un poco más. La salsa de curry (tailandesa) es espantosa, y lo intenta demasiado.

Nous avons testé plusieurs fish and chips dans Londres, mais vraiment ceux ci étaient les meilleurs ! Poisson justement cuit, panure (plutôt une très fine couche de pâte à beignet) croustillante et sans sensation de gras dans la bouche, et une folle sauce tartare maison vraiment délicieuse! Seules les frites étaient un peu épaisses à mon goût (Je préfère les petites frites allumettes), mais cela reste une histoire de goût!

Found this restaurant on Tripadvisor, my hotel is very close. I had the battered cod with tartarsauce and chips. Chips were very crispy like I like them and the fish was perfect. Good sauce also.

Locale accogliente ed informale.

The web site makes it sound amazing, but I definitely did not agree. Fish was “fine”, but not even close to “best”. Chips were really poor: cold, like eating little packets of mashed potatoes. Absolutely NOT close to what they claim. Seemed to me typical industrial frozen, as per every lousy chicken shop on every lousy high street. AVOID.

The fish had a thin greaseless crisp coating. The fish was perfectly cooked, moist, flavorful, fresh. One of us had haddock, the other cod. Both were large portions. The chips were brown crisp outside, creamy inside, perfect. Their house made tartar sauce was excellent. Older descriptions and menus list coleslaw and their own brewed beer, neither available anymore, but not needed. Small place, reserve if you aren't doing takeaway. I recommend eating in to get the fullest crispness experience. Window service, seat yourself.

We asked our hotel where we could find the best Fish & Chips close by. This was his referral. A little pricey but we enjoyed our experience. Not fancy and not your upscale restaurant. You order at the counter and they let you know when it's done. Just a small Fish & Chips place in a somewhat trendy neighborhood. Clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. I'd go again if in the neighborhood and had cash to spare.

We found this place looking at a Netflix documentary. We came to try. The ordering process was smooth. Food arrived in 10 mins. We had a cod and a plaice. Both were light brown and the fish inside the batter were overdone. It was like a cream.

My friend and I went there today (7th September 2018) both looking forward to our lunch. We ordered two fish and one portion of chips to share. The food arrived, the fish were really small even with all the batter. The chips portion looked unusually big. We were too hungry and started eating but ended up filling ourselves with the chips and not much fish! We had both eaten there several times before and had never had such small portions. Not sure if I ever go back.

Il locale è piccolino, abbastanza caratteristico. Si ordina alla cassa e poi ti portano i piatti al tavolo. La porzione è abbondante ma sinceramente ho mangiato del fish and chips migliore in città. Il fritto era abbastanza pesante e -soprattutto- aveva un retrogusto dolciastro che non sono riuscita ad apprezzare.

This was my second visit to K&M.; I came back in 2014, so while visiting in 2018, and wanting fish and chips, I came back. I enjoyed my Cod and Chips. Thought it was consistent with my previous visit.

Siamo arrivati verso le 20.55, il locale chiudeva alle 21.30, ma ci hanno chiesto se potevamo prendere il fish & chips Take away perché "stavano chiudendo". L'abbiamo preso da asporto, risultato: l'olio in pochi minuti ha oltrepassato il cartone. Dalla fretta non hanno nemmeno avuto voglia/tempo di farlo assorbire. Sale inesistente. Non ci avevano messo neanche delle posate e dei tovaglioli. Pessimi!

So this place looks great and seems to have solid menu. I made the mistake of ordering the Calamari; while very tasty, was one of the smallest portions and the smallest calamari rings i've ever seen (think the size of a ring for a normal finger, no i'm not exaggerating). To be fair, it was very tasty and the tartar sauce lovely (although the lemon mayo was minging).

Su scampi también es increíble!

Bad chips, not real potatoes, small fish and soggy batter. Very expensive. It is a franchise and this one is not cared for.

I've concluded there are no good fish and chips in London... this place changes nothing. It may make fish and chips acceptable to Brook Greeners but it is a far cry from real fish and chips that you find in coastal towns across Britain.

Locale piccolo e semplice ma molto accogliente, pesce fritto o grigliato al momento (con tanto di schermo tv che mostra i cuochi in diretta). Ottima qualità delle materie prime, servizio gentile e cordiale, buonissimo rapporto qualità-prezzo, in una zona non super centrale e turistica, ma comunque molto piacevole di Londra (Hammersmith, hanno però anche un altro locale)

We were staying nearby Shepherds Bush Road and saw this unassuming fast food restaurant. Fish choices are good, I had cod and my husband had the haddock. Portions were plentiful and not greasy; the slaw was exceptional and they serve local beers. The chips were okay and that’s the reason for the 4 rating.

Yo estaba tan avergonzado al descubrir que el foid44 esta vez fue atroz. Las patatas fritas eran tan seca como para ser unedible y el bateador pescado estaba lleno de aceite. No pudo acabar la comida y me quedé con la sensación totalmente estafados, cincuenta libras más pobres y aún extraña hambre. No correrá el riesgo de volver a este lugar. Totalmente decepcionante y un desperdicio de dinero.

I've been to this location twice now & highly enjoyed it both times. The service is friendly & prompt while the food is tasty & fresh. The restaurant itself is very charming, clean & modern. Looking forward to going back the next time I visit London.

Localino carino, semplice, ci sono 3 tavolini rotondi e un bel tavolo e di legno lungo. Personale sempre diverso, ma tutti gentili e sorridenti. In una settimana trascorsa a Londra, ci abbiamo cenato 4 volte!! Il pesce è fritto al momento, così come le patatine. I calamari erano il nostro piatto preferito, ma ottimo anche il merluzzo fritto o grigliato. I bambini sono ben accolti ed hanno un menù per loro. Buona a la birra. Consigliatissimo!!!

Best fish and chips I have ever had delivered! Was sceptical at first because as a Yorkshire man I like my fish crispy and hot, was not disappointed and the chips were plentiful and hot.

Often fish and chips in the UK are a greasy take away snack that you get wrapped up in paper. Kerbisher and Malt is I guess what you would call posh fish and chips. The little sit in cafe is comfortable and quant and they provide a fresh, cook to order daily selection of fish and chips. Real tasty and satisfying!
