The liver. Second largest organ in your body after your skin. That's why, when you eat, you get hot. That huge organ is working overtime, sorting the fats from the proteins, sending vitamins this way and that. Helping your hair curl, your lungs fill with air and your brain compute splitting three ways. And they say Sunday is a day of rest. Not for the liver it isn't. Not if you visit the Anglesea. My liver has sorted many a protein. But none I doubt as gleefully as the plate of molecules set before me at the Anglesea. My liver sent messages to my brain telling me to stop ingesting said ingredients on the plate. But my brain translated that to my mouth to simply ask for more gravy. The friendly server dutifully obliged. When my better half's mouth finally obeyed her liver and uttered the words, "I can't eat any more" my arms completely disregarded my liver's pleadings, reaching over to dust off her left over succulent beef. Every bit as good as my pork belly and only a firm beef eater or pork belly lover would err on the side of one against the other. Pork belly is a much abused cut at the Sunday pub lunch. I had a pork belly roast lunch the other day and I chewed through it like I was chewing through my 10 year old Adidas shell toes I can't bear to part with. But let me state for the record. This pork belly. Sensational. Crackling that does as the name describes. No chew. Pure crackle. Unctuous layers of rendered fat beneath. And tender strands of meat to chew on. Three layers of absolute heaven. Surrounded by gravy of perfect viscosity. Which you can ask for more of. Steamed veg that crunch and snap. And roast potatoes thick of shell and fluffy of innard. These are better than I can do at home. And they are pumping them out by the second here in the busy kitchen. A production line of perfection and the standard bearer for all Sunday lunch roast potatoes. These are the ones. Thick cut gravlax with a punchy, well textured horseradish cream was an excellent way to start proceedings but perhaps unnecessary given the generosity of the main. Each pudding that came out looked the business but alas couldn't trigger enzymes that would work on what came before quickly enough to allow room. The Anglesea is alive with people all day and getting a table on Sunday can be tricky. My advice is book whatever time they have. We took 4.30pm. The place was buzzing. If you can take your eyes off the beautiful roast set before you, you will discover a wonderfully warm, cosy, bustling old pub with panelled walls and open fire to the front. Brick walls adorned with local art for those at the back who are dogless and want to gaze into the small kitchen with five chefs working furiously to deliver. It's like staring into a fire. Their endeavour allows your contentment. Dust the roast off in your own time. This is lazy Sunday afternoon stuff and you won't be rushed. Give the liver a chance to regain its composure. The Anglesea has been packing locals and outsiders in for many years and this is why. Roll me home and get The Antiques Roadshow on. Sundays have never tasted so good.

Absolutely faultless food, one of the best gastro pubs in west London, but the waitress brought the wrong bottle of Italian red wine 3 times, and when we ordered a second bottle managed to uncork a liberal splash all over me. And on arrival home, my clothes smelled like I had been in a chippy that hadn’t changed the frying oil for a bit. If you book the restaurant section, make sure you don’t sit too near the kitchen or wear old clothes! Otherwise, couldn’t recommend it more highly. Not sure who the owner is, but time to upgrade the kitchen extractor fan system methinks.

I just didn’t see the 4.6 star tonight. Food: - chargrilled octopus: the meat in itself was tasty and cooked well. However it just came swimming in half a bottle of oil, literally. - pappardelle beef ragu: good flavors, but there was barely any beef ragu, and pasta were slightly undercooked and I really do like my pasta al dente Service: Decent service, greeted with smiles, however our dessert/coffee order hadn’t fully gone through and we waited 40mn until reminding ourselves to them. Atmosphere: The place itself is nice, but it is Extremely loud, and horribly smoky from the kitchen, all my clothes and jacket (and hair!) smelled terrible - like burnt. Wouldn’t necessarily recommend especially as there are so many better places and options around the area!

Delicious roast but a new vegetarian main option is needed, £19 for an enormous bowl of bland pesto pasta with fried potatoes in, feels like there should be a nut roast or something similar on the Sunday menu particularly, a shame as it’s so good for meat and fish eaters but really lacking for vegetarians

We went there to celebrate the birth of our grandson with our son in law’s parents. We’d initially been allocated a table by the kitchen and wanted one nearer the bar - but at the time nothing was available. Then the wonderful scarlet (our waitress) came over and said she’d sorted out a better table. This made our evening. Then the food - it was really excellent (paella, chicken, swordfish) and a bottle of champagne. The thing I loved about the place was just how friendly all the staff were - and they seemed to be enjoying themselves almost as much as the guests! Highly recommended and once again thanks Scarlet for being such a super waitress.

This was by far the worst restaurant on our recent London visit. Poor service and the worst fish dinners ever. We arrived at 7:30, after having to make a reservation on Open Table and guarantee it with a credit card. If you don't cancel within 48 hours of arrival you will be charged. To cancel, they make it difficult by requiring you call them, versus doing it on Open Table. For USA tourists like us, that means an international phone call. We sat for 10 minutes before a server came with menus. Another 10 before a different server took our order. We both ordered a fish dinner that was supposedly a whole sole. 30 minutes later a male server arrived with our fish dinners, which were over $32 each. The fish were coated in a breading with ganush sauce topping piled over the fish. It looked good. But upon taking bites, we discovered it was nothing but bones with about 1/4" of a gummy white fish. We had to scrape off the topping and breading to get to the fish and try to remove the bones. Both fillets were literally mostly bones. The worst rip off ever. Avoid this tourist trap! You will avoid poor service, with an insulting service charge added on top of the over-priced meal.

Always reliably good. The menu always has seasonal changes which means there is always something different. The summer minestrone looked delicious as did the fresh asparagus. The parpadelle with ragu - very tasty - not cheap at £21. One person ordered the burger which was said to be good. The spaghetti with clam - a bit too much lemon possibly. Good service although a bit slow to deliver tap water...

Terrible experience. Turned up at 3.30pm on a Friday afternoon to a pub that was 30% at capacity at most and was told couldn’t have our prams out despite 2 sleeping babies and plenty of room. Awful customer service, no sense of wanting to help or be accommodating. If the pub was full we’d have totally understood and if the pub started to fill up we would have moved on but stated we only wanted to stay for one drink. It’s isolating enough being a new mum, let alone being turned away from an empty pub. Very disappointing indeed.

We were invited by friends to meet up for Sunday lunch, not usually a favourite as we often find we can cook Sunday lunch as well at home. On this occasion however we thoroughly enjoyed the whole day. The venison tartare was rich and full of flavour with a nice side of marrowbone. The burrata salad was fresh, tasty and a lighter option. Roast beef was delicious and properly cooked and the vegetables were crisp, with some excellent roast potatoes. The portions are substantial so make sure you go feeling hungry. **AVOID** The manager is one of life’s charmless, computer-says-no, officious sorts. He came over to our table to insist we woke up our baby - who was sleeping in her pram - and sit her back at the table. Something to do with her cluttering up the place…even though she was tucked in the corner, completely out the way (by the manager’s own admission). Some rubbish about “policy”. The Orange Giraffe Pub Co. should put more thought into the individuals that head up its pubs. When you leave it to the sort of weapons-grade pedant that runs The Anglesea Arms to set the atmosphere of your venue, the customer does really begin to question why they are paying c.£70/head for fairly average food and drink. We won’t be back.

Wrong Plaice Wrong Time. For the past 5 years this pub has been my go to for a good ol sundee roast. Today we were once again served a delicious pork belly 10/10. Unfortunately we ordered two servings of the Plaice. One came out great, crispy skin and deliciously tender meat dripping in juices. The other came out grey, weird looking and tasting. I think they mixed up the plaice! For the folks who don’t know, plaice is another word for a Flounder, a dumb bottom dwelling fish that you can scare with a torch and stab in the head with a spear. The chefs seemed “floundered” themselves when we mentioned one of the dishes tasted completely different. “You must know fish better than us” I believe was the response, I guess I do. Still, not very comforting to hear from the chief of staff. Lessoned learned though - don’t bring a flounder to a pig fight!

Deceptively larger inside than it appears from outside, this is a go to pub for me whenever I'm in London. It's a Fuller's pub, so all the standard ales & lagers are served. Currently there is a 20% reduction on those from 12am to 4pm Monday to Thursday, so really good value.Stand out for me is the vibe, and great service from Nic,Zoe & all the bar staff, really friendly. The garden out back is large with a lot of tables. The food served is from a Thai menu, & while not my cup of tea,it seems really popular with other customers.Overall,a cracking pub, comfortable with a good atmosphere.
