Kemp Spice in Brighton and Hove

I have agree with previous reviews we moved into area and tried it. The batter fell off our plaice. Good prices but questionable freshness. Our plaice had started to smell a little funky at one end. So we didn’t notice until we got to that end. The chips were proper. The battered sausage looked so cheap quality. I’m not sure I’d go back there again. But it’s so local. Service was indeed friendly and quick.

Horrible old brown chips not fresh at all, tiny portions, a very small ‘large cod’ and pies not heated through properly. Worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. And quite expensive too! Avoid…

A great old school chippy. It's been run by the proprietor for 34 years and still going strong. Decent fish and chips and a good variety of drinks in the fridge.

Decent wee chippy and the curry sauce is excellent but only served in the evening, there's a laundrette opposite so kill two birds with one stone.

WORST CHIPSHOP IN TOWN Awful.food chips must of been cooked 3 times over was hard and tough disgusting never again. How it hasn't been shut down is beyond me

It's a bog standard small take away chippy. They typically don't have a lot of precooked fish and so you may have to wait for it to be cooked. They also sell pies, etc.

Worst chippy in England? Almost definitely. The quality and portion sizes are a joke. This place must rely on walk in trade…nobody would go there twice. Avoid like the plague.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this place. Went once and swore never again. Years later I have been talked into going again and it was just as bad. Sorry. I'd try somewhere (anywhere) else.

For £ 8.50 small fish and chips you dont expect a mushy, obviously pre frozen piece of cod. We asked for a napkin and the bloke banged on about " it not grow on trees" hilarious and obviously below par business

Very poor quality. Chips tough & overcooked and fish mushy and tasteles (I added my own beans in the pic).

A local diamond, would highly recommend, every local community should have one!.

The owner is nice, fairly expensive for a chippy id say, but nothing compared to the prices on the sea front.

Felt really hungry after a couple of hours stop in Brighton following a 90 mile drive to drop my son and his gear at his new rental. Had an hour or so left parking on front so Googled nearest chippy and headed up to Kemp Town which was opening in around 20 mins. First time ever found myself waiting alone outside this tiny chippy looking in hungrily as the chipmeister prepared to serve. Put on my mask in anticipation and right on time the door opened and I could enter to order a spring roll, large chips and oasis drink (grabbed from fridge) for £5.85. I asked if there were any veggie sausages ready but was told these are understandably only cooked to order. My order was tidily wrapped up with salt & vinegar added and in a jiffy I was winding my way back to my car to enjoy my feast (which was delish) and got off home well-fed!! Recommended. John

people say that the Kemptown Chippy is a Brighton institution. I can see why! lovely friendly guy, fresh fried fish, crispy golden batter, hand cut chips, generous portions, and tasted great. we'll be back for sure!

Good old style chippy! An institution in the area. Chirpy chap on the fryer; the owner. He's been there for years! Support your local (he takes cash, and now card). Very safe Covid measures in place 👍

A fantastic little fish and chip shop, the food is great and the prices are too, the gentlemen that owns and runs the place is always happy to see people and have a chat. Proper food, proper prices, proper customer service, Defenetly Check it out if your passing.

Sorry but was really not a very good fish and chips at all. Picked up a medium cod and chips at around 8.30pm or so, was not fresh, tasted as though it had been sitting under the heater for hours, would rather wait 10 minutes and have fresh food made and enjoy my dinner rather than only eating half and having to throw the rest away. The guy was friendly and service was good but food was not acceptable for the price you pay.

Personally best traditional morish chips in kemp town, does a half portion, doesnt use chemical that whitens them like alot of chippys do these days. Havent sampled anything else their.

No he ordenado quitarle Kemp Spice en mucho tiempo. Pero lo hicimos en el fin de semana. La comida llegó rápidamente y estaba caliente. Pedimos 2 platos principales y muchos lados. El Chana Dhal era delicioso. El Okra no era muy agradable, pero todo lo demás era delicioso.A un precio muy razonable Nunca he comido una comida aquí, así que no puedo comentar sobre el restaurante. Buena comida para llevar y mucha.

I work near by and go to the kemptown chippy all the time. Brilliant fish and chips. I'm a big fan and so is everyone in my office! Really good price and the guys that work there are also unwaiveringly friendly and polite. Couldn't recommend this place enough!

Very happy with my order which tasted simply divine - made with fresh ingredients - a pleasure to eat. The portions were very big, so much, that I was able to save some for my lunch the next day of which was just as good as the evening before. The delivery driver was very polite and friendly, so earned themselves a £2.50 tip. Well recommended - would order again!!! :) :) :)

This is a small restaurant with fairly basic seating on the edge of Kemp Town but despite the modest decor it is worth checking out. Lovely friendly staff and great food and generous portions at reasonable prices.

The food didn't arrive. I had a voicemail saying the tried to deliver and I didn't answer the door, but I was at home waiting the whole time so it doesn't make sense. I'd already paid for it as well.

Comida increíble, hospitalidad increíblemente cálida, una experiencia increíble. Nos acabábamos de mudar a Kemptown y abrieron el restaurante especialmente para nuestra fiesta de inauguración un domingo por la tarde. Sirve comida que nuestros huéspedes no pueden criticar y todo el tiempo con una sonrisa y calidez. Sim es increíble frente a la casa y su esposo es fabuloso en la parte de atrás de la casa! Desde que tuvo muchos puntos para llevar y nunca me ha decepcionado. Solo desearía tener más amigos en Brighton que pudiéramos llevar allí para apoyar su increíble restaurante.

La entrega es a menudo mucho más rápido de lo esperado. Sin duda vale la pena probarlo y entrega gratuita dentro de un determinado radio. Encantados de haber encontrado un lugar con buena calidad de comida para llevar. No he probado el restaurante todavía, pero pensaremos en hacerlo en el futuro. Chicken tasted like vinegar and my ceylon was bland, could not taste the spice or coconut, could not eat past a few bites. The member of staff on the phone was unhelpful and insinuated it was my fault. He would do nothing to correct my order past a 10% discount on the next order which does nothing for me right now being hungry and out of pocket. A shame as they are usually quite good, now all they have is one less customer, I will not be ordering again.

A good Asian restaurant in Kemptown. Clean, bright and airy. Good service, good food. Lots of local regulars and a good trade in take away. Away from the city and well worth a visit.

I rate an Indian by the quality of their saag paneer. Good cheese, but frozen spinach and ridiculously sweet. I could have had this for dessert. One curry was overly salty - and we are used to seasoning. and not that it's a terrible niggle but no free poppadoms. so remember to order some yourself.

La comida era deliciosa y abundante. Un buen restaurante indio que se merece algo mejor de lo que ha recibido recomendaciones aquí, basado en la experiencia que tuvimos. A un precio razonable y el personal encantador.

Muy mala experiencia para llevar. ¡Probablemente lo ponga entre los 3 peores tópicos y yo tenga 56!mi esposa tenía gambas dansak, la suya era adecuada pero el arroz era horrible y seco.el mío era un pollo jalfrezi. el pollo parecía suave y ligeramente extraño en textura. el sabor en general fue insípido y el tomate estaba un poco apagado!el anacardo y el arroz con limón, que sonaba agradable, estaban secos e insípidos. los popadoms tampoco tenían sabor, ¡no sabía que eso fuera posible! nunca más viajaré a la maravillosa Agra en cinco vías para mi tratamiento indio.

Poppadoms were soggy and stale, and the korma sauce had split. All tasty enough, but the meat was dried out in some dishes.. I think there may have been some reheating going on, didn't come across as fresh

Spectacular chips and lovely blokes behind the counter. There are a couple of chairs by the window, but you can't sit there to eat since some person reported them for allowing people to do so without providing a bathroom. But it's possibly even better to walk round the corner and eat them on the seafront.

I have to say kemp spices was the most disappointing and poor curry I have ever had the displeasure of tasting...bland, watery, tasteless and horrific staff etiquette...stay away if you value your insides...

I swear that each individual Indian take away in Brighton is a front for one massive operation serving out the same slop regardless of name. Always the same issues; same cookie cutter menu, bland food. The curries have different names but clearly use the same 'gravy', food is always sloppy and spiceless. I pretty much have given up with the options in Brighton. Kemp Spice is no worse than the others, but then the others are all pretty ropey too. One thing, incredibly quick delivery, so thank you for that.

This is one of the best Indian meals I've had since loving here! Great service. Food was really full of flavour.

Disappointing and bland. We didn't eat most of it. Arrived far too quickly to have been cooked properly. Even the pilau rice tasted odd. We have ordered from here before and it wasn't great but thought we'd give them another chance but this was even worse. Shame as we like to order from local businesses.

Despite being warned off by locals in a Kemp Town pub, I went to Kemp Spice because it was close to my hotel. When I arrived, the manager was coughing violently and arguing with a woman. I asked for music (to drown this out). He turned it on, she turned it off, he turned it on so she sat in her car outside the restaurant and glared at me through the window! This sort of thing continued while I was eating with nobody paying any attention to me - shock, horror, a paying customer. I paid the equivalent of the take away price and left. No-one deserves to spend hard earned money being treated like this! The food was ok but I ate it SO fast to get out of there asap!
