After trying several Japanese restaurants in Edinburgh, this one is by far the best of all. The taste of the food was amazing; we couldn't even stop talking about it outside the restaurant. Highly recommended, and I'm marking it as my favorite Japanese restaurant.

We spotted this little place while on one of the trams, and after seeing the images of the food online decided to try it. Holy Katsu it has THE best japanese food we have ever tried! I was there with a friend from Southampton and both of us were overwhelmed at not only how good the food looks but also how delicious it was! Very cosy little place, cat lovers especially will love this little gem. Very friendly owner and majorly talended chef. Cannot recommend enough, beautiful food, would happily revisit next time we're in Edinburgh!

Kawaneko is truly one of the best restaurants I have ever been to! The food is so delicious and reasonably priced for its portion. I would recommend the karrage bento - the sides it comes with are great, and the chicken with the mayo sauce is just WOW. It is the most hidden gem in Edinburgh!! Its interior is cosy and Dawn always greets you with a friendly welcome. There are only 4 tables so definitely email/phone ahead to reserve! I can’t praise this place enough - I have taken my parents, my boyfriend, and any visiting friends here. It never disappoints :))

Amazingly authentic Japanese restaurant located along Leith Walk. Been there a few times and each time the food has been beyong amazing! The owners are lovely and clearly have a deep passion for bringing delicious Japanese cuisine and culture to Edinburgh. The restaurant is small but not claustrophobic, always cosy and warm (would definitely recommend booking ahead to avoid disappointment!), and also offers other interesting items, such as books, manga, figures and trinkets. Can't recommend this place enough!

This is a small, cozy café/restaurant with a cat/anime theme and the most friendly staff and great food - big portions and very reasonable prices. Be sure to phone for a reservation. We will definitely come back :)

Really friendly staff. The cafe is quirky and cool with lots to see. There is an anime cat theme and they also sell anime books. The food is very tasty. The karage chicken is crispy and delicious - not dry- cooked to perfection. They have a range of Japanese pop cans too. The food portions are very generous. We would definitely visit again when next in Edinburgh. I would recommend this to anyone- bring your appetite!

This is by far my favourite Japanese restaurant in Edinburgh. And I know what I’m talking about because I’m Japanese. Amazing attention to detail by the chef. Great service, chilled out atmosphere, delicious food that doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg. It’s a tiny restaurant so make sure you book in advance.

One evening we passed by and saw the delicious looking food so I couldn’t wait to dine here with my kids. The interior is quirky and sweet with books and souvenirs you can buy. We ordered the Karaage bento, croquette bento and Japanese hamburger bento. The food was all excellent. They tasted exactly like the restaurant in japan! Really delicious. The plate came with lovely Japanese pickles , salad and Japanese Egg tamagoyaki on the side. We couldn’t finish it with its generous portion so they kindly packed it in a Bento box to take it home. I would definitely come back again and would highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you are looking for an authentic Japanese food !

I often come to Kawaneko Cafe for home comfort food. Today mum n I had soup, a deep fried oyster bento set and a pork chop bento with gingery sweet soy sauce. Plus a pot of tea. We really didn’t mean to eat much but we ate everything. 😂 We can’t help it - it’s too good to leave behind even just one grain of rice.

The best Japanese restaurant in Edinburgh. I think it’s the only place that make fried oyster and it’s delicious. I love all the details of the shop, and how each dish has a variety of sides. The staff here is very friendly, I definitely recommend it to everyone.

Tried a few dishes here. #1 for me is karage with miso katsu sauce - many large pieces of juicy fried chicken, crispy outside with sweet & savory sauce. #2 is pork katsu curry which comes with really good fukujinzuke (福神漬) relish! Kaki fry oysters were a little on the dry side but still decent. Cute cat theme with lots of comic books

We ordered a bowl of ramen and 10 pieces of sushi. Serving time is EXTREMELY terrible. Waited 60mins for the ramen, But the 10 pieces of sushi never came. We waited 90mins and asked the waitress , and she said its still in process, unbelievable. We have to cancel the order and leave. Although they waived the bill, But we will Never coming back again. Worst ever dining experience in Edinburgh

Wow. Just wow. Where do I even begin... Let's start with the food. The chef (I believe they said his name was Sujan) is a black belt in the ways of ramen. I had the tantan broth with duck that was falling off the bone. Beautiful. Secondly, atmosphere and vibe equals the food. The manager is this really cool guy named Zu. He gave us a great experience and definitely lifts the place up even more. Had great service from Milo as well who even let me build a custom ramen that wasn't even on the menu. Place is fire, back soon.
