HIBIKI Japanese dynamic kitchen & bar in Edinburgh, City of

Popped in on a Monday evening as I love ramen, noticed the 20% off food during the quieter weekdays which was an added bonus. It was very quiet but the service and food was fantastic, nonetheless. I had a glass of water dropped off by the waiter within a literal minute of being sat down. The food was very fast coming out and was delicious. Highly recommend.

We had the most wonderful time at Hibiki for my partner’s birthday lunch! From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed, and the hospitality remained amazing throughout our visit. We tried both of their ramen options—the Tantanmen and Tonkotsu—and they were absolutely delicious! The portions were generous, and the flavors were spot on. The pork belly starter was melt-in-your-mouth good, and the gyoza that came with the ramen was a lovely touch. The atmosphere was so peaceful and relaxing, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a special meal. To top it all off, we were surprised with a complimentary birthday dessert, which was such a sweet and thoughtful gesture. Everything was just perfect, and we can’t wait to visit again! Thank you, Hibiki, for making our celebration extra special.🩵

The place is exotic, you go down one level below the street, you are welcomed by Japanese decor and smiling and friendly waiters. The room is cozy and calm. The menu is simple but the recipes are elaborate. I had sushi for the evening, it was quite generous and very appreciated.

My man tc is the best. Been coming for several years now, and his customer service is 40/10. The food is also good and consistent, the restaurant is tidy, clean and airy. Location is very nice.

This restaurant qualifies itself as an “izakaya” style restaurant and from what I have experience it is not the case at all. I have been to Izakaya’s in Japan and this is nowhere near what you expect in a real izakaya. That being said, the interior decoration is pretty nice, and the service was great. Now about the food, I tried the tonkatsu curry and some sushi. The curry was good, but the tonkatsu was clearly bad. The chicken had a weird taste in my mouth, and therefore it could have been great but the chicken has to be fresher next time. The sushi was also not very good, the fish had close to no taste and the rice was way too warm to be eaten in a sushi. I am pretty disappointed by this considering the prices. I like the idea of trying to create an izakaya experience, but the menu and drink choices just don’t make sense at all… The only positive note was the service, the manager looked happy to be working here and was sometimes running to get our meals served as fast as possible 😅 I won’t be coming back sadly, I don’t really recommend this restaurant if you are looking for good Japanese food.

En Edimburgo por negocios después de un vuelo muy temprano no quería comida de hotel, ya había hecho cuatro viajes a Pret - un - pesebre ese día y me apetecía algo ligero y sabroso. Google Maps vino al rescate y llegué a las 7 de la tarde un día laborable pidiendo una mesa para uno. Personal muy amable, menú delicioso, difícil de elegir. Le pedí al camarero que eligiera por mí y no me decepcionó - un poco de maki de salmón recién cocinado seguido de fideos de cerdo udon - que ni siquiera estaba en el menú, pero el camarero decidió que es lo que necesitaba - no estaba equivocado. La mejor comida japonesa que he probado, precios muy razonables - ¡creo que Wagamama llegó a 11!

I was craving sushi and this was the perfect restaurant for my last evening in Edinburgh. TC was warm and welcoming upon my arrival. I ordered the spicy edamame (delicious) and the Chirashi Don (fresh and tasty) which came with miso soup and seaweed salad. Thought the portions were ample and I left very satisfied. The restaurant has a nice, calm ambiance and the service was fantastic. Highly recommend if you're in the neighborhood!

We both had ramen that came with gyoza on the side. The broth was super tasty and the meat in the dishes was really generous.

First, the food: the Tonkotsu Ramen was absolutely superb - every bite was amazing, including the broth. The egg was perfect, the pork was not chewy or dry, and it was topped with chilli paste that gently mixed with the broth as you eat. Simply divine! This bowl of deliciousness was served with a couple of gyoza, and bear in mind I’m not a fan of gyoza because whenever I have them I find them dry and chewy. But these ones, they are the best gyoza I’ve ever had. Daughter ordered some nigiris, maki, and squid karaage, which she said it was the best, better than our usual local Japanese restaurant. We finished the meal with some new dessert… sesame ice cream (really good sesame taste), and coconut black rice pudding (very good and a must, it’s a bit like sticky rice pudding). Now, for the atmosphere and service: beautiful and authentic feel to the place. It suits families, as well as for couples. The service was friendly but professional. Drinks served quickly and so was the food! Price was a little pricy, but it worth every penny. I would definitely come back again and I would highly recommended Hibiki if you’re around in Edinburgh.

Je ne mets pas excellent car les prix me semblent très excessifs : 18,80 livres (22,30€) le plat de 6 sur la photo, je vous laisse juger en fonction de votre appétit, mais pour un mangeur normal 12 est une bonne portion, donc en gros vous en aurez pour 45€ sans compter les boissons et desserts. Cela dit les makis sont excellents, tout est frais, bien présenté et plein de saveurs. Si vous voulez vous faire plaisir sans compter, c’est le bon endroit ! La salle est calme (mais un peu sombre en demi sous-sol) à quelques pas de la frénésie de la vieille ville.

It was my first time dining here and the food was delicious and very mouth-watering. The waiter, TC, also did a fantastic job of demonstrating how to use chopsticks appropriately and provided me with immaculate service. The atmosphere was very relaxing and felt authentic. I would strongly recommend eating out here.

This was some of the best quality sushi we have had. The salmon and prawns were very high quality. We loved the service and ambience of the restaurant. Highly recommended.

For us, it is a must if you go to Edinburgh. The food, the kindness of the personal, the quality of the food is simply outstanding. Due to my job, I have to go to Tokyo quite often, and I must say that the food here at Hibiki is the same (if not better) that the one I have in Japan. Last, I will say a big THANK YOU to the waiter we had all the times we where at Hibiki; TC, you are one of a kind and you make the experience at Hibiki a memorable one. We will be back (again).

In a sentence: if you fancy an overcooked, overspiced, and overpriced raven, look no further. As a family, we don't get out as much as we used to, and we prize every opportunity and purposefully look for experiences worth having. The staff and atmosphere were alright. It's a bit too shiny and not as authentic as one would appreciate. The food was where my troubles started. The prawn and veg3table tempura and chicken karaage were reasonable and pleasing. The ramen was an utter disgrace. The bone broth was beyond necessary suppressed by chilli and other spices. The egg/nitamago fell apart. The noodles were utterly overcooked. The meat/kasu was passable. My tantanmen ramen was drowned in chilli oil. No taste came through. The minced meat was passable for consistency. You should not worry about the taste, you won't feel it. Labelled as 'mildly spicy', it took me by so much surprise I had to order a glass of milk to breathe afterwards and a chicken teriyaki donburi to actually have something in me... And I easily burry a scotch bonnet in my chilli con carne, so this was unexpected. We make ramen. Know how to cook the broth over hours and hours. We delight in Japanese cuisine - home made or at a restaurant - and know most of the places in our vicinity. So at the end we've got the bill. £3 for a glass of milk... £100 overall, with the audacity of asking for £10 service charge. So this was the last time for us here. If you want quality Japanese cuisine, walk two blocks to Hakataya, pleasant, authentic, polite, and delicious Even maki&ramen has much better quality ramen, though I guess an ASDA instant ramen pot would surpass this. Just add enough chilli...

Very friendly waiter. Good food, especially the nigiri was great (salmon, seabass, tuna, fried prawn). Maki was tasty but unnecessarily big. Kaarage was good.

While not the best sushi I ate, it's tasty enough I'd comfortably come back here to eat from time to time. I especially enjoyed the nigiri selection - each piece had a different, fresh, well prepared fish.

Really enjoyed our dinner at Hibiki. The food was fantastic as was the staff. We each had something different, along with some sushi and all of us were very pleased. Would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are in Edinburgh!! In addition to the great food, we tried the sake flight, which was great! Learned a little bit about the different wines and enjoyed having the opportunity to try them.

Absolutely fantastic Japanese sushi & sashimi… food is excellent, very tasty, good all round menu. Sushi & sashimi to start was amazing, super fresh and prepared very well. The main rice dishes, nice portions, tasty and very well presented with fresh accompaniments. Staff were very friendly and attentive.. around great place to visit.

Little bit more pricey than some other places but quality is worth it. Chicken katsu was so tasty and came with veggies which not many places do- really neat takeaway boxes as well kept it very warm and didn’t spill. The pumpkin coquettes were okay but dip them in the sauce and they were delicious. Sushi was also tasty but had unrolled by the time they got to me 🫶🏻

Had a lovely birthday lunch here! The food was fantastic and we had such an entertaining waiter look after us, always checking in to see if we needed anymore refreshments or sides. They also catered for one of our party who couldn’t eat onions, garlic or chilli - making sure she knew which items she could eat and that her meal was allergy free. Wish I had taken a picture of the food but we couldn’t help but to dig in straight away. Would recommend the Tonkotsu Ramen 🥰

Really lovely evening at this restaurant. Don’t miss it. The surroundings are fun and lovely. Staff really friendly. Highlights although it was all fab were the spicy minced pork noodles, assorted sashimi and duck spring rolls. Lovely wine we had Malbec. A great filling meal just a short walk from St. Andrew’s square. Basement level but don’t let that put you off. A wonderful fun and tasty eatery.

Absolutely fantastic experience. We were treated to a sushi and sashimi tasting session, with the server providing instructions on each different dish. Then we went for the sake tasting board to really go bonkers. Fantastic service and food and can't wait to go back.

Ristorante giapponese frequentato per lo più da orientali, e poco dai turisti, che probabilmente segnala l' alto apprezzamento da parte di chi conosce bene la cucina giapponese. È un' ottima soluzione se si è saturi della classica cucina scozzese. Noi abbiamo preso un ramen eccezionale, forse il migliore mai assaggiato in vita mia. Ottimo anche il sushi, di cui però abbiamo fatto solo un piccolo assaggio. Il personale è estremamente gentile e sorridente. Prezzi medio alti per gli standard italiani

The food is great, but the service and atmosphere are so much better. If I lived in the area, I'd probably come here every day. Absolutely the best restaurant I have ever been to, and I seriously doubt I'll find something of similar quality, at least for quite a while.

We dined here for my partner's 40th as she is a big fan of sushi. This place did not disappoint !! The sushi was amazing and the pieces were huge. The staff were happy, chatty and very welcoming, good prices too. A must visit if you love sushi. We will be back next time we're in Edinburgh

There's more affordable and nicer places in town than here. Got the Tom Yum, which cost nearly £20 and all it came with was 2 prawns, noodles and broth. Servers were lovely.

Good atmosphere and great service, but the food is disappointing when it comes to value for money. Tom yum with 2-3 shrimps and lots of noodles for filler is not what I expect for £19. I live in London and used to getting more for less. Never thought I’d say that, but in this case it’s true.

Popped in for an early dinner after going a matinee performance and before catching our train back to the Shires. What an amazing space. Tucked away in a basement on North Castle Street, this is such a calm and serene restaurant. The staff member was so welcoming and friendly and the food was wonderful. I’m vegan, my sister is not, but we both had a tastie and beautifully presented meal. I highly recommend and will definitely be back. Thank you! The only thing I didn’t like was the huge TV screen, which showed a fair amount of dead stuff being prepared. Next time I’ll not sit where I can see the TV. Other than that, perfect.

I was looking for some nice Japanese restaurants, and I want to give it try. But I am very very disappointed with the food. We came in for dinner and the restaurant was not so busy. We ordered sushi, Sashimi, and some hot dishes. In general, the dishes not good for its price, the sushi is similar to take away quality, especially the rice is wet. The biggest issue we had is, we found big fish bones in our salmon Sashimi, in all three pieces. I think it is very low level mistakes, and it could lead to some very dangerous situations. So unfortunately I am won't come back to this restaurant and won't recommend for anyone who loves Japanese food.

This may be the best Japanese comfort food I've had since I lived in Japan. The chicken katsu curry was perfectly prepared, and the sake tasting was just delightful.

The service is impeccable! We were starving on Christmas Day scavenging for open restaurant and they let us in without booking! Both waiters welcomed us with water and Christmas crackers. The food was really tasty, I ordered mackerel which taste good and not fishy. We had a little accident with spilt water and the waiter came right away with napkins. They also filled our glasses with water through out the meal. The ambience are super nice as well, with music that is not loud and comfortable to be able to hear the voice of people we’re talking to.

I ordered gyudon, in the picture on the menu this dish looks appetizing with a lot of meat. When the dish was brought to me, I was disappointed, it contained 2 pieces of beef and the rest was onion. After eating I can taste onion in my throat and it made me vomit. I paid £19 for a bowl of rice with onions.

Although tucked away this Japanese restaurant is definitely a hidden gem! We were greeted warmly and given iced water upon arriving. The atmosphere and layout of the restaurant is perfect, and despite not having much natural light it feels warm and cozy. Our waiter was wonderful throughout the entire duration of the meal and made sure our experience was excellent. We ordered the tonkotsu ramen, chicken katsu curry, tuna nigiri and chicken yaki udon. All were delicious, great value and portions. The chicken katsu curry came with a side of miso soup which was very delicate and refreshing, a wonderful pairing. The tuna nigiri, although only 2 pieces, was served quickly and at the right temperature, very tasty. The chicken yaki udon was very sweet and rich, which I enjoyed however not everyone may. The tonkotsu ramen was definitely the star of the show however. It was served with a side of 2 chicken gyoza and was a large portion. This is the best tonkotsu broth I have ever tried, it was rich and bursting with flavour, unlike many I’ve had before. I will definitely be returning and recommend it to anyone who has appreciation for Japanese food.

My partner and I decided to reserve a table here after booking a holiday to Japan in 2024. It was a celebratory meal and one to get us excited for our journey ahead. We were encouraged by the positive reviews and the excellent sounding menu, offering everything that we were hoping to try. It was also a great opportunity for us to go somewhere new and support a smaller business. We had a great experience. We had never tasted sake before so we had the sake flight, which was very good. We shared the 8 piece sushi platter and I had the Katsu Curry, whilst my partner had the Tonkotsu Ramen. We finished up with the matcha ice cream and rice pudding. All tasted excellent. The portion sizes were adequate - not small but not massive either. The servers were very friendly and we felt very welcomed by all Perhaps the one downside was the toilets weren't the cleanest and the noren curtains (curtains in doorways) could've done with a wash as well. However, I'd most definitely come back for the amazing food and service.

We've been to Japan and loved the food, so we try and visit Japanese restaurants as much as possible in the UK. First time here was great, so visited twice more during the trip. Didn't disappoint; Great food every time. Will be back : )

I was at Hibiki on Saturday for a celebration dinner. There were 18 of us across 2 tables, along with some additional walk in customers. The service was excellent, the food was quick to arrive, considering how many of us there were & everything was hot! The staff never appeared overwhelmed, nothing was a problem & I was so impressed by their memory of who was eating what! Such great value for money too. Highly recommend!!

Asian people DON'T COME！！As an asian，can tell they are fooling people. even lemonade is straight from supermarket.

Came here with my parents who are usually not fussy eaters, but oh boy was the food here horrible. I got the ramen, which was so soggy it disintegrated in my mouth. They got the chicken and mackerel don, both of which were so dry it looked like the proteins were microwaved. The tempura was pretty decent however.

Went to Hibiki in the summer and chose it again for a lunch in town at the weekend based on that experience. Was not disappointed. The service is impeccable (the waiter even said glad to see you again), The food is amazing. The best duck spring rolls I have ever tasted in my life. There were many Japanese clients which is a great positive indication too! This will be a recurring favourite!

Popped in for lunch as just round the corner from our rental. Lovely inside. Staff was very friendly. We had squid and chicken karaage, salmon and sea bass nigiri and tuna maku. All the food was excellent. Would definitely return.

One of my new favourite places to go to for Sushi. Not a huge menu but a lot of good food. Sometimes that is all you need and good atmosphere! 08/02/22 Back to Edinburgh again for business and visited Hibiki, sushi is quality and love the relaxing atmosphere.

Lovely atmosphere, wonderful food and very friendly staff! We were very welcomed by TC, a lovely young professional. I definitely recommend it!

Friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere make a great home for the wonderful food. Highly recommended if you're after some sushi or Unagi.
