Left the restaurant in tears. How upsetting - I have been going to Kaltur with family and my other half since 2017, when the service was exceptional and the food was amazing. The food today was still okay, however, the prawns were held back by the waitress to be brought out last, meaning they could not be eaten with the cold patatas bravas and tomato bread. But first and foremost, I warn you, do not turn up as a walk-in asking if they have a table after a long day at work as you will be accused of being "rude". Despite being nothing but a quiet and content diner, enjoying the flamenco music and messaging my husband about how relaxed I was to be there. Even after the slow service, I was about to order a dessert and another drink, until after mentioning the late arrival of the prawns, I was immediately accused of being "rude" which I have never been told in response to a polite complaint. I am offended and also, in hindsight, unimpressed with how the service and food has declined that I won't be returning. I lived in Barcelona for 3 years and this food has gone from being authentic to mediocre tapas nowadays. How sad, as it has been earmarked as a place for birthdays and anniversaries for years gone by. No more after such careless service.

Beautifully cooked food and fantastic service. The patatas bravas with deep garlicky sauce were off the scale. Tempura cod came with a lovely ratatouille and the cheese board had some lovely additions such as a confit onion dip.

Popped in for an early evening dinner. Restaurant looks very quaint and cosy. Wine selections were good. The Blue Garcia white wine was particularly nice. Food was very good although I found it to be very over priced. £16 for tapas beef stew is steep. We paid £81 for 5 tapas bowls and 2 glasses of wine. Which I feel is too exspensive. The quality of the food was good and very tasty and would recommend if you love Spanish food. The tempura aubergine were by far my favourite. Some of the crochets had no ham at all...mostly cheese. Patatas bravas was nice enough. The beef stew although exspensive was delicious. The garlic oil prawns were bland but cooked well. Staff were attentive. Overall we had a lovely experience the only downside as said before was its a little pricey. Don't think we would return for that reason.

Food here is some of the best I've had in Newcastle. Tuna tartare, lamb, ham croquettes, bread with mushrooms all spot on. We had 3 drinks. 2 gins and 1 vodka. The only strange thing was that my friend who got the 2 gins asked for the same thing twice but got 50ml the first time at 9.50 then 35ml the second time at 7.50ish. No explanation really.... Bill came to £44 each which I was happy to pay for the brill food and lovely experience. Service was brill too from the lovely waitress on Saturday. We would have paid a fair bit more if we had got the recommended number of Tapas (I wasn't that hungry at this visit) This branch is smaller and more intimate than the Dean Street branch (so they probably didn't appreciate me on the centre high table regaling my mate with hilarious tales 😂). Has the same very cool vibe - white painted osb tales, bright and classy. Right next to the bigg market too. Booking essential Highly recommend

Unfortunately a bit of a let down for us, we attended during restaurant week on a Saturday evening, on our arrival we were informed there was no prawn or pork dishes! We ordered our food and after eating pointed out we had not received our tortilla . It came 25 minutes later, we asked for dessert menu and like before were told they had no crème brûlée! Such a shame as we had looked forward to this experience all week.

The restaurant allowed bookings until 10pm, we had booked for 9.30 but were late as a result of the taxi and traffic. We had been told on the phone at 9.45 that the kitchen was still open until 10pm. Awful, would never go back. It took over 40 minuets for the first two tapas to come after we were told ‘it’s tapas, you have to wait’ repeatedly by the rude waitress. A £40 bottle of wine had sediment in it and tasted worse than a £12 house bottle of red from an Italian. We ordered a course that never arrived, the water tap didn’t work in the toilets. The food was bland and unseasoned. Absolute disaster, wouldn’t recommend it to my worst enemy!

I have always walked down the street in front of the restaurant and it always caught my attention to eat authentic Iberian ham since it looked spectacular in the display case, we booked the other night, and the truth was a bad experience, unfortunately we did not make a good choice when ordering the food, the prawns were small without salt, the ham looked like raw meat fillets, the croquettes melted on the fork, the cold bread, and finally the lamb had onions that were not caramelized are burnt onion. It was disappointing for me since I am Spanish and it is really a pity that the dishes come out like this since the prices are high they could make an effort to care and serve the customer better. It is a constructive opinion so that the owner can improve the quality of food

This was a nice venue for date night. The food was nice and having each dish come out as it’s ready made it easy to appreciate each item. The cheese board was a highlight, definitely worth it and more than enough cheese for 2 people. However, I can’t recommend it for a *first* date as the place is quite small/noisy, so you wouldn’t be able to hear each other well, lol. It has a great atmosphere though and felt very cozy. The service could have been better, we had to flag down waiter each time we wanted to order a drink or ask for water, and there was a miscommunication with the kitchen about the availability of a dish (which was kindly rectified on the bill, anyways). Nice wine list. I would take a friend visiting here and I would come again.

My wife and I have been to both Kaltur restaurants and each time we have really enjoyed what is as near an authentic Spanish experience as you can get in Newcastle. Someone complained about dishes coming out at different times, well that is what you would get in Spain. Some of the food we have tried was not really to our liking but we were trying items we would not normally choose. The food prices are very reasonable with larger portions than you get in other tapas restaurants in the area. I do have one complaint and that is the wine prices which is one of my pet grumbles wherever we eat.The mark up for simply allowing you the use of a couple wine glasses is ridiculous. A bottle of wine you can buy from them at £17 is £32 on the table in the restaurant. To get that extra star they need to charge less for the wine and we would probably eat and drink more!

Full disclosure first of all: I was recommended this restaurant by my nephew who used to work with the chef. He told me he was one of the finest chef's he'd worked under so how can you not follow up on that. The High Bridge restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and compact and we ended up being perched at what may have used to be the kitchen hatch. I'm not going to lie, when we saw it I was a little bit wary that we'd been shoehorned in to the only space they had but it turned out to make the meal so much better (which is a feat in itself - see below) as we got to see how the kitchen worked and got our food handed to us literally fresh off the stove by the chef. Anyway, enough about the restaurant..... Most tapas places you go to have miniscule portions. It's a case of "We recommend 12- 15 dishes each to fill up a mouse" so I usually go heavy on the bread. This is not needed at Kaltur. We ordered 5 dishes in addition to the bread (Patatas Bravas, Iberico pork cheek with smooth spicy cinnamon sauce and crispy fried potato, Huevos rotos with black pudding and.... some other things I can't remember but are in the photo below) and we were honestly stuffed after the fourth dish. It was a battle to eat the pork cheek but I'm always willing to take one for the team. And so much so I had a cake with my coffee afterwards. The standard of food was honestly amazing. Because we could talk face to face with the chef he was probably bored from hearing me gush over his cooking for 2 hours. I refuse to use the phrase "melt in your mouth" but the pork cheek..... well, I'll leave it there. And the Huevos rotos is a must for anyone who likes black pudding. The whole meal was £90 for 2 - including a bottle of wine - which, admittedly, is pricier than your average high street chain tapas restaurant but it was completely worth it. My partner is still raving about it 5 days later. Believe my review, believe my partner, believe my nephew and believe the high score on here - Kaltur is a must in Newcastle

20/08/2021 Extremely disappointing as travelled from North shields after viewing menu on line only to find lots of items changed or missing?? And the prices had increased quite significantly. When this was explained to staff I was told nothing had changed even when online menu was shown! the staff member then tried to convince myself that pork cheek was the same as pork ribs!! really? The food however was good although the 3 dishes ordered were delivered at different times spoiling the experience. Please update your online menu to reflect your restaurant menu and avoid £40 in taxi fairs and a disappointing experience.

Kaltur began their corporate lives as importers of authentic Spanish products to the UK restaurant and home foodie market and recently they’ve branched out into cooking and serving Spanish cuisine in High Bridge Street in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK. I’d first read about Kaltur over at Secret Diner, which is a guide to the eateries of the North East of England. As I was due to be in the region for a couple of days in early July I thought I’d give it a try. It being a Thursday evening I didn’t book in advance but was warned by one of my fellow diners that without a reservation we were unlikely to get a table, Newcastle being party central any night of the week. A phone call two minutes later confirmed that they were full, save for three places ‘at the bar’. Well that seemed a shame but we decided it would do as we had no plan B and were feeling ready to eat. In the event I could not have been happier, if they given us the best table in the house. The restaurant is tiny and these three seats ‘at the bar’, which is really ‘the pass’, gave us a commanding view of the entire place out of the corner of one eye as well as a bird’s eye view of the kitchen and the opportunity to interact with the two chefs who worked in the smallest space imaginable to produce an array of mouthwatering tapas dishes for us to try. Sometimes you can ascertain whether or not restaurant staff can be trusted, at first sight. In this case all of the guys here, including the off duty waiter who’d called in with his grandfather to have a glass of wine gave us such a warm and friendly welcome that they immediately won our confidence. The menu is extensive and consists of lots of interesting tapas/rationes sized dishes and few main courses. We couldn’t decide what to choose so suggested to the chef that he simply keep passing us little dishes from his side of the ‘bar’ to ours until we tell him to stop. We ordered a bottle of wine (recommended by the young off-duty guy mentioned earlier) and then battle commenced with a couple of servings of Jamon Iberico Guijelo carved from the leg which was positioned just in front of me at the bar. It was all I could do to stop myself hacking off the occasional slice as the meal progressed. Rosy salty/sweet meat with a delicate aroma typical of the hams from this colder region of Spain and with the taste of the acorns on which the little piggy had dined before sacrificing itself for my pleasure. This was one of those occasions when it was very easy to simply dive in and start eating whilst forgetting to take a photograph or two to hare with readers. I did manage a few though. So in summary, this little place goes right to the top of my list of places to eat when I’m in the area. It’s fun, serves great dishes, has a great attitude to food and is very reasonably priced.

Decent food but poor and unwelcoming service. The food is good - not excellent - but the service, considering how small a venue this is - would not put it on my "one to recommend" list. For the same price per head there are many other places in Newcastle you'd be better off spending your money. Decor/ambience not great either - we visited in December and the place was cold and the toilets were dirty and in a state of disrepair.

This is one of the worst food experiences in Newcastle. Firstly it is massively over priced. You don't mind paying for quality but sadly it was not value for money. The food was salty, greasy, cold and all disappointing. It was served in cold bowls with cold side plates. The prawns did not taste fresh, the sausage wasn't cooked well, the potatoes and veg were way too salty, the ribs were chewy...there is nothing good to say sadly. Then the bill comes and you see the price...terrifying. Also 2 out of 3 of us who attended have been sick since we got home. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Lovely little place. More concentrated on the wine rather than the tapas - I only say this as there’s a bigger wine than food menu! Had 4 dishes between 2 of us- as a meal I wish we’d had more but as like food to see you through the night drinking it was enough. High bridge street location is quite small so when full gets really loud, I’d like to try the Dean Street one just to see the different. Will be going back!

This is a small lovely Spanish tapas restaurant in the heart of Newcastle. I really liked a couple of dishes, patatas bravas were also very authentic. My favourite dish was the dessert - torrija, a typical bread-type pudding with natilla (vanilla-flavoured Spanish custard). Natilla tasted just like the one I had in Granada. If I may recommend something: please make more wines available by glass; also, my octopus was a bit chewy and tough, it should be melting in mouth (maybe it was overcooked). But otherwise, this is an excellent and fun place.

We were really disappointed with Kaltur after reading some good things online. Quality of food was poor and service was incredibly slow, one dish at a time. We ordered six tapas dishes that came over the course of two hours - given the restaurant was only about a third full, this was unbelievably slow. Mixed bread was ok...it was bread... Some oils other than the table olive oil would help. Deep fried prawns came as six overdone small prawns spread over sliced iceberg lettuce. Calamari was anemic and underdone. Huge amount of salt on both prawns and calamari and no sauce or mayo to accompany meant both were really dry. Chorizo was ok. Monkfish was quite nice, but took nearly two hours to arrive. Final tapas was grilled Mediterranean vegetables covered in salt. Added a photo to give an idea. Overall food wasn't good, presentation and care were lacking and it would be nice to have more than one dish on the table at a time. There are far better places to eat in Newcastle.

Wine selection was good. Food was amazing, best tapas in Newcastle. It's small therefore difficult you find a table without booking.

We have tried Bubble Cha recently and it’s a very good place for a good price bubble tea for the large cup. The staff were friendly and they have different types of bubble tea too. The service was quick and location was great too.

Visited yesterday for the Sunday lunch set menu, we both chose the Chicken Supreme Roast Dinner, which was really nice, lovely buttery mash potato, nice big yorkshire pudding & loads of gravy. Then chose Apple Crumble and Sticky Toffee pudding for dessert, both of which were really nice. Staff were really friendly and checked in regularly to see if we needed anything else. Would definitely return again and would highly recommend a visit. 👍
