This gem, hidden in the heart of Portland is great !!! It's like a small town tavern where everybody knows your name. The Hostess / Bartender / Waitress Lady greeted us warmly🥰, cleared a table, and made some excellent meal, drink, and appetizer suggestions. We both ordered the "Dungeon Burger"; my friend had the soup side and I chose the fries. I had an excellent sweet-tart Moscato blend to sip with my meal and my friend chose a soft drink. While we waited, the music ambience was excellent rock music loud enough to give us privacy in our conversation while not being loud enough to hinder our conversation. Our food arrived... WOW, the fries were fries, but the Dungeon burger was a most excellent flavorful experience. The usual toppings were good, but the burger patties were cooked to perfection !!! The flavor was terrific with pink in the middle, just as I love it. It was a culinary delight bursting with flavor, moist and juicy. I found it juicy and messy (if it's not messy, it isn't awesome) and incredibly delicious. I WILL return !!! I can easily recall the flavor to this minute. For a late evening meal, I highly recommend this McMenamins !!!

Feel bad writing this review. The poor employees working here appeared to have been set up to fail. Two servers, and it was super busy. However, the food was so bad. $20 for fish and chips that had two super small fish chunks(literally resembled Gordons frozen fish) wish cold fries. The server was nice about it, and gave us a beer on the house. Beers and ciders were good. Very over-priced for what you get. This company needs to step up their food game. Its bad. Put as much work into you food as you do the atmosphere. PLEASE.

Pub food minus any flair to set it apart. This time out our service was faulty. Little check up. No water. No bill just told the amount. No offer of extra napkins when it's kinda there thing. Too bad

I typically don't like McMenamins bc of what I've heard about cleanliness and how staff were treated by managers at other locations with this company. My friend and I stopped in. Got some burgers and drinks. Had a gluten free bun for my burger and a side salad. My only wish is that they had more gf food and drink options, like a hard cider or gf beer or cbd sodas... Our server/bartender/host was exceptional. They were closing early due to staffing but he handled it with grace. Give him a raise and get some more help bc this place is wasting its true potential.

DO NOT EAT HERE I worked one single shift here before noping out. There are health code violations out the wazoo. Grime on every surface (yes, of course on the surfaces right above your food!), food stored and labeled improperly, little handwashing, and plenty of cross contamination for folks with allergies. To top it all off, there isn't even a proper dishwasher. I was told to put dirty ramekins back in storage, ensuring every customer would get some dish grime mixed in with their ketchup. I ate here a few times before working and it's a wonder I ever survived.

You know...I booked a poached shift.....and I did a great job...and then they blocked me!!!!! So. Idk If I'm honest I LOVED THE STAFF. I guess they didn't love me 🤣

Ppl beware of mcMenamins hands down worst place to work for they say one thing and once you actually get pass training they only schedule you 22hrs a week how can anyone live off that..? THEN TO TOP IT EVERY MCMENAMINS I WORKED AT HAD THE NASTINESS KITCHENS THEY DONT CLEAN THEM WELL AT ALL DUSTY AND OLD FOOD EVERYWHERE AND EVERY SINGLE MCMENAMINS HAS MICE OR RAT PROBLEMS I WOULD NEVER EAT ONE AGAIN IDK HOW THEY KEEP PASTING HEALTH CODE GUESS PAYING PPL OFF WORKS FOR THEM

Food and drinks are always great. Rotating temp staff means service will vary on a monthly basis, but the permanent ones have always been great. PSU students get slight discounts. They also recently reversed the awful decision to charge extra for fries. A little on the expensive side but location, service and food quality make up for it.

Typical street pub. Took us a minute to find it relative to where Google maps put us. Chicken sandwich was ok, beer was meh but drinkable, tots saved the evening.

I'd consider average bar food. All our drinks were really good!

Nice laid back vibe. The staff were nice and the food was good but overall this Mcmenamins felt like a time warp back 10 years. They were out of multiple drink and menu options. Park is OK, it’s downtown so there’s street parking but it kinda depends on what’s happening in the area. The building and patio are cozy. It’s nice that they have something in this part of downtown.

Super cute little McMenamins tucked away in a building, not too far from the zoo, Arboretum, etc. We sat at the bar, which was fun on a rainy day. Good vibes and food.

Took a minute to get a beer in a less than half filled pub but the ambiance and smells are soothing and pleasant. I’ll be back to try the food.

I'm an unabashed McMenamin's fan. The service has improved a lot since the days of post-pandemic short staffing.

I asked about student happy hour, ($2 off well drinks); opted for a shot cos at least I'd get more drunk for $5. a shot is 9.50 LOL

Great place for a drink and a bite.

This place was quite a surprise. We picked it because it was close to our hotel and one of the only places in the neighborhood that served food late at night. From the outside, I assumed it would be a cheap little bar & grill but the food was far better than I predicted. The hummus plate was full of tasty veggies. The cajun tots were pretty good too. I highly recommend this spot.

Had a good time here. Played a bunch of Pokemon go then stopped in for a few whisky’s. I had Riley as my bartender. Nice lady and she let me have control of the tv so got to watch some baseball. Good vibes and cheap drinks. $25 for like 5 mixed drinks so pretty happy with that. Did have a crazy homeless dude light a fire outside their front door so that was wild

I came in and it was super busy so i sat at the bar expectong to wait but the bartender (ekla??) Was really nice and made me feel welcome, and he got my food and drinks for me super fast! Him and the server (caitlyn?) Were constantly telling hilarious stories. Really liked the neighborhood vibe and how casual it all was, will definitely be coming back here!

I'm so glad they take more risk with their beer than national brands like "The Ram" do! They only carry their own beers, and they suck! McMenamins is on point by comparison!

The food is amazing and the beer is better. I let the bartender create my flight, and he did a great job. I enjoyed all the beers in the flight, The Longest Night, a bourbon barrel aged Ale, was amazing. I would highly suggest giving that beer a try.

Come here at least 10 times awful experience 9 out of the 10 times. Last year a pregnant lady served me and she was so kind when I was ignored by others. This place is close to me and convenient but I won’t come again. I would not recommend to come if you are a person of color for sure. Food was not bad, but bad service effects food temperature of food and mood when eating

Food was good, drinks were tasty and the waitress was friendly.

Really poor service. Had a sign saying to wait to be seated, but then told to “come on in” by the bartender who then walked away. Was never offered a refill on water, the waitress didn’t know the contents of the burger on their menu, and rather than ask if we wanted a check (we intended to stay longer and order more beer) the waitress simply walked up with a card reader and asked for our card. The food was pretty good tho.

If you want horrible service and a server who can't handle more than 1 table go here. If you want to hear about your servers bathroom filled with emotional support rabbits go here. If you want trash service go here. If you want to sit around and not be served. Go here. This place is miserable. Went twice for lunch and both times were a complete wash. Homeless people also occupy the patio. Go to Safeway first. Go to the burrito shop down the street. Go anywhere but here. Awful place. McMenamins should be ashamed of their staff and quality of service here. Even the soda was flat. Place sucks

My friend and I have been coming to this spot for years and I love it here. The atmosphere is cozy and it has less eyes than the usual McMenamins. The drinks are a little pricey but they are always incredible so it is usually worth it. I can't wait to come back again soon.

Terrible service. Ordered the fish and chips. They were okay (frozen fish from US foods). Small portions of fish. Pretty steep prices at that. We got to see our waitress every 20 minutes at most. She wasn’t busy. Just standing around or not around at all.

Can't beat the beer flight as regards both quality and price

My boyfriend and I take bets every time we go here on what they're going to mess up. We have gone to this restaurant maybe 20 times so far, (really close to our apartment) and they have messed something up every time. My favorite time was when my mom ordered a peppermint hot chocolate (on their seasonal menu) and instead of making it was cinnamon. My mom asked the waiter why it wasn't peppermint and he scoffed at her and said he didn't know what she wanted him to do. If you go in expecting them to mess something up tho, it's pretty fun. We make a game of it.

I went there today to eat lunch. The service was mediocre. The food was even worse. It seemed like it took the waitstaff forever to cook a cheeseburger and fries. And on top of that, the fries were cold and so was the cheeseburger. I won't be going back there to eat no more. And I was the only person in there at the time. The manager should be ashame that her waitstaff didn't give me excellent service, especially since I have been a regular customer. Oh well, I'll take my business else where. And all those people who rate this place as great, well, they're white. And since I got shifty service, I reported this location to their corporate office. Whether anything changes, it don't matter because I won't be going back there. But maybe the next person of color won't have to go through what I endured.

Casual pub with a nice selection of local beers on tap. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The food is pretty good, and I especially enjoyed the soup of the day, which was Hungarian mushroom barley.

I like to try different pubs of all styles, and Just Ales is certainly unusual. I have now stopped here for a drink on a number of occasions as the pub is close to the bus station. The landlady is happy to talk through the choice of beer and cider listed on the blackboard, I have never had a problem here. On my recent visit she suggested a blend of dry and sweet Hecks cider to my taste, and it was lovely. I always call in here alone, but generally get into conversation with other drinkers, and the landlady. It always makes a great end to my visits to Wells.

Love Mcmenamins! Each location is a little unique. Had the Portland dip and it was delicious! The Cajun tots are a must and the blackberry cider is always amazing!

Great service! We brought the dog with us, and the entire staff was so accommodating! Not only were there amazing options for outside seating, but they were sure to bring water out for the dog without even asking! That was a first for us!

A nice place to go after a show at the Old Church Concert Hall.

Chef had phone and wallet on the cooking area where the food is put together, disgusting and disturbing with no common sense of cleanliness. No gloves and touching food. The beer and water glasses were still soapy. You have been warned.

Food is great, and most servers are great about checking. Except, not all of them, one of them hardly checked in on me and waited until it was too late for me to order anything else.

Always order through doordash. Out of probably 15, 20 times ordering, 3 have been right. When I call to ask how 2 of 4 items are missing the person on the phone was rude and wouldn't help. Don't eat here, not worth it. Maybe it's just a buncha kids who don't know what they're doing.

Once upon a time this place was really great. Pity, those glory days are over. I spent about about an hour and a half standing up, waiting, just to get a takeout order for a cheeseburger and an order of fish. A long wait might have been excusable if the food wasn't both sub-par and expensive. And while my order was first, I got it last to boot. Oy. Never again.

Great neighborhood place with decent pub food. Very edible gyros and great salades. Burgers are quite good. Aim for the cajun tots! Fine array of local NW brews and ciders. Score a booth and settle in! Very friendly and attentive staff.

Classic McMenmins. Walking directions was a bit odd. It’s just stopped in the road and we found out we needed to go up stairs and through a court yard. But found it. Nice, clean and staff is very polite. Well worth coming to as they all are.

Friendly staff - Good food. Handicap cart will go in there. Was the Copper Kettle many years ago. Typical McMenamins quality. Some PSU professors eat there.

The pub is cosy and sweet and has a charm. I would have given this four or five stars - but it is let down by the poor service from a very rude, weird, unpleasant character working there - who is completely devoid of charm. A short lady with glasses, older - and just really strange in manner - impolite, arrogant - just a bizarre thing that she has been given a job which should be based on being civil and friendly to customers. Her manner is so strange and unpleasant and rude - that this alone would put be off ever returning to this pub.

We had the best service at this location. The food is always good. We've eaten at several locations and have not had a bad meal. Very chill atmosphere. Would highly recommend it.

My first attempt to dine at this location was meet with a hand writen sign stating that they were short staffed and wasn't going to open till 2pm, well after my noon lunch break. My second attempt was meet with a hostess that totally ignored me and my need for a table to be seated, instead she slowly lumbered to help all the other guests already sitting at there booths or patrons sitting at the bar. I understand being short handed and understaffed but you STILL need to make ALL of your guest or potential guest feel welcomed and invited. That involves communicating with guest your empathy at the wait time, letting them know that you'll help them asap because you vaule there business, and then moving at a pace that reflects that. Better yet she could've quickly just seated me (it's not a huge dining area) or said "go ahead a sit where you'd like, and continued helping the other guest. I felt completely invisible, perhaps she felt I wasn't worth her time. I WILL NOT SPEND MY MONEY AT PLACES THAT TREAT ME AS A SECOND CLASS CITIZEN, period. I've mostly have had positive experience at McMenamins so this was even more tragic and unfortunate.

Another classic mcMenamins location that needs no introduction.

Used to swing down here for a burger and tots when I lived in the apartments above more than twenty years ago (when I was still too young to legally drink). While this location is not as psychedelic as some of the other McMenamins in PDX, the food is characteristically good.

Rude lazy staff horrible food and only have menus on ur phone so how u have a good that's charged and has a qr scanner

Had a great meal tonight. The food was great but the best part was the service. Sophia was an absolute gem and I could not have better. She made sure we were taken care of, including giving great suggestions on different food items. She also went out of her way to give great suggestions for local places that we need to check out while I’m town. I’ve never had better service in my life and couldn’t give higher praises about Sophia.

No physical menus and the digital menus dont show any drink prices so it's a guessing game. Happy Hour goes from 3 to 6 (the menu online doesn't say).

They have always had delicious burgers and salads this my first time visiting Market St so far the staff are friendly and nice I felt welcomed service was fast.

This place is great, yes like everyone else in the country, they may be short staffed but their personalities, hospitality and polite conversations made this one of my most pleasant restaurant experiences in a loooong time. I had the Mystiq 18 burger with lettuce wrap, it was prepared perfectly, the lettuce even wrapped the burger, unheard of in a non vegetarian place. So impressed with my entire experience. I'll be back for sure! Oh and the beer was good 👍

Decent pub, slightly off the beaten path, however has a decent range of local beers, and the food was good too.

My friend just got out of the hospital a couple of weeks ago, decided to venture out with me last evening. We have been here before and enjoyed, and was on the streetcar, so easily accessible for her. We checked online to be sure you were open, and it said til ten pm. Arrived about 9:05pm, chairs and tables out, signs lit, but dark inside, and no sign of life. What the heck???
