Meal between a couple of friends in November 2024 Summary: overall too expensive, the dishes are good, careful presentation The dishes are tiny, tapas style, but without the price of a tapa... The waiter pushes the consumption a little too much when ordering, which makes you uncomfortable... The style of cooking is not clear, said to be a combination of several foreign cuisines but we get a little lost, and the associations are not always relevant The crispy chicken is absolutely uninteresting (and expensive!), the sauce that accompanies it called cherry sauce does not have the desired effect, it looks like a mayo-ketchup mixture... nothing to do with it. map. The neighbors at the tables complained that the spice intensity was too high, but that was not our feeling. We had 3 additional glasses to accompany the dishes. 12.5GB a glass for a rather ordinary white wine (white Albarino), it's too expensive. Mixed experience

Going on the premise alone I wasn’t sure what to expect but I was really blown away by this restaurant. The food and cocktails were sensational. I’m still thinking about the Dashi broth on the broccoli and the smoky beef tartare now. I also really enjoyed the fat washed rye in the old fashioned. A place that is full of ideas. Attentive service. Only wish would be to turn the music up a bit!

I dropped by casually on a weekend night when many stores were closed~ The above-average meals provide a plan where you can try every dish during your first visit. It’s a bit like the concept of having a small cup of beer of various flavors. (Choice of seven or nine paths) I ordered two different varieties of red wine, half a bottle each~ Overall, it is very relaxing and comfortable. It is not a restaurant for tourists! Worth a try!

Ordered more than half of the menu and pretty much every dish was excellent - not a particular fan of the gumbo nor the eggplant though nothing wrong with either. I don't know what sorcery was used with the food to make it taste so good but the flavors were magic! The macaroni - just wow! At the risk of sounding pretentious, the texture of the chicken gyro was exceptional. Absolutely loved the whole mackerel in rendang sauce - was so tender... just amazing! Even the potatoes... seriously. Too busy eating so no time to take photos. Will be back for sure! 2nd time around wasn't as good since they changed the menu... Some hits but some misses... The 3rd visit was good again - some really well-made tasty stuff although a bit awkward to share some of them... still not a fan of a couple of them but nothing wrong with those. They also have a place at Edinburgh Street Food with a limited menu so you can try some of their stuff there. Overall consistently pretty good - small plates mean even if you don't like where their creativity took them sometimes, you'll certainly love some of the dishes. Safe to say they know what they're doing in the kitchen. Make sure to save room for their well-thought-out desserts with the perfect mix of textures and flavours!

I visited the restaurant at lunchtime and had the 7 course tasting menu. The food was reasonably tasty and some of the dishes had interesting and unusual flavours. Some were fine, but quite basic. Overall the experience was fine, but I found that it is not good value for money. At £50 per person for the 7 course tasting menu it was not worth it and I will not go again. In that price range for lunch you can find so much better value in Edinburgh.

I booked Junk without really knowing what to expect - I was worried it might be slightly gimmicky given it's ethos of upmarket 'Junk' food. I was proven more than wrong. Firstly the staff were amazing - so charming and friendly and the perfect amount of attentive. The hot honey margarita was so good I had to order two and I had an espresso martini at the end of the meal that was creamy, foamy and STRONG. Now to the food - the snacks were perfect and left you eager for the main dishes, the crowdie/chilli oil hummus with the bread was maybe my favorite part of the meal. The tomato small plate was 10/10 and the main of 'chicken Caesar' finished the savory dishes off perfectly, the Caeser dressing was so strong and tangy. Desserts were good of maybe a couple of notches below the savory food. I'll be back here.

Disappointing birthday dinner. I was looking forward to trying Junk for my birthday however unfortunately the dining set up, very busy service and finding tinfoil in my food made this a disappointing experience. We were sat at high stools opposite the bar, facing the wall. It was cramped and busy with waiters passing behind us much of the time so difficult to relax but they couldn’t accommodate us at a table. This setup didn’t work well for the small plates menu as we ran out of space quickly. The staff were doing their best but were visibly very stressed. Initially the food was lovely (fried chicken, confit chicken, Bombay potatoes, monkfish special, broccoli) but I found a piece of tinfoil in the confit chicken. Our server apologised and took the plate off our bill. We weren’t offered a replacement dish or some drinks by way of further apology. The food was genuinely tasty up to that point but the overall experience was really disappointing. I was looking forward to trying some of their drinks but it wasn’t a relaxing experience to enjoy a drink. I’d love to see what this place is like on a good day and their Sunday roasts look tempting but I couldn’t recommend it from this visit.

I was not prepared to be blown away! I’d tasted their food at Edinburgh Street Food and it was insanely good, but I like to keep my expectations on an even keel. I knew they’d produce good food, but what I was served was incredible! They’re bar & restaurant is on South Clerk Street, it’s unassuming inside and out and gives nothing away. However set a foot inside and the staff are lovely, very welcoming, attentive but not in your face. The menu is simple but this is elevated and sophisticated junk food. About A Mouthful - 3 dishes at £5 each Sharing’s Caring - 12 dishes, 3 dishes for £32 and they recommend 6 dishes for 2 people so expect to pay £64 They do have a lunchtime special available, selected dishes, 3 for £25. We tried the Wee Buns of Fun (£5) - white crab, brioche, szechuan Better than Gregs (£5) - chicken sausage roll, mango, curry These 2 ‘starter’ bites set the tone. It sets your tastebuds up for the party that is about to commence, as well as a feast for the eyes. The szechuan in the Wee Buns of Fun really creeps up on you and makes your mouth tingle but it also creates the need for more. Greggs have nothing on this Chicken Sausage Roll - sensational and if they sold these in full size, there would be a queue out the door. We chose 7 of the dishes plus dessert. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully cooked, perfectly balanced; well seasoned with every element carefully placed on the plate to play its part in creating exceptional mouthfuls of food. Legs Like a Duck - confit duck, tattie scone and Hoiracha. Your eyes light up when you see this being delivered to your table. The tattie scone holds this together and I loved the popped rice on top. The textures are the magic in this dish. ‘Mon Ya Bass - stonebass, makhani and onion bahji. I love their play on textures and flavours. The fish was impeccably cooked and I commend the chef in cooking that fish skin to perfection. The onion bahji was crunchy and perfect for mopping up that curry sauce. Monsieur Crab - soft shell crab karaage, gem and yuzu. Crunchy and moreish in all the right places. The lettuce brought a lovely freshness to the dish whilst the yuzu brought the zing. Le Kebab - lamb neck, ezme and tzatziki. Oh this was just downright yum! Pink and tender lamb on a bed of turkish salsa atop a fluffy warm thick flatbread. Do Scallops have Tails? - Orkney scallop, ox tail and onion rings (£3 supplement). Of course I was going to order this, it’s scallop! The ox tail stuffed into the centre of the onion rings was unctuous to the point of umami heaven. The scallop bringing some serious sexy vibes to this plate of food. Moo Point -beef tartare, Hondashi mayo and chilli oil. I’ve not had beef tartare in years, then all of a sudden, I’ve had it 4 times in the last month! It’s making a come back and for good reason, it’s bloody delish! The crackers and the chillies just elevate this dish even more. Forever Blowing Bubbles - bubble and squeak, ham hock and egg. When a dish makes you think of breakfast, then it must be good. The egg was on point, bringing forth a bright yellow runny yolk, but I felt that the ham hock was slightly missing in this dish, however this did not distract you from wanting to devour every morsel. Treacle Tart - milk sorbet and peanut. A good solid dessert. Loved the milk sorbet. The Jaffa - chocolate, blood orange and chai masala. Just think Jaffa Cake but larger with a little spice. We ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2021. This crisp and refreshing white wine with its vibrant acidity and zesty flavours was a match made in heaven for the hot weather and every dish we ate. Its light body and clean finish made it incredibly easy to drink. I’ve fallen in love with Junk. The food is outstanding and possibly one of the top restaurants in Edinburgh. I very highly recommend it and if you were treating yourself and someone special, order everything on the menu! I've also been for Sunday Roast and its downright fabulous.

We just happened to fall on this place last night and I'm so glad we did. We hadn't went out with any plans, this place was in the area and we were lucky enough to get a table. We were pleasantly greeted with great banter straight away and offered an option of 2 different tables. We decided on the 7 course tasting menu at £45pp. Every course was a taste sensation! I was eating things I would never normally have. One course was celeriac, it was so good I couldn't believe it was really celeriac! The dip dip with the homemade focaccia was so good we ordered extra. The jam roly poly dessert was lovely, as was the pineapple pot. I tried a couple of the cocktails, Strawberry Kisses was my fave. I've a few minor negative points, which didn't detract from my experience, just observations. The monkfish in the caper sauce was very salty but my partner says that's what capers are like, I've never tried them before 🤷🏻‍♀️ One of the waitresses didn't seem very knowledgeable about the food she was serving and didn't seem to care too much either, which was disappointing. I asked for a third cocktail and it never came, maybe they thought I'd had enough, I probably had 😂 it wasn't put on the bill so wasn't an issue, think it was just genuinely forgot about. All in all, a great experience. Food great, drinks great and atmosphere great. Look forward to visiting again to try some more different dishes!

Only 4 stars because we both had to go for dealers choice or we weren't able to get it. Also, I was quite disappointed with the coarseness of the boeuf tartare. Obviously just my taste. HOWEVER, we went for seconds on the chicken parm as it was so delicious, light and it fitted that little hunger-hole that needed to be fitted. Cocktails were also really nice. I especially liked the tajin powder on the margarita. All in all, absolute gem of a place, lovely staff and fresh ingredients. P.s. descriptions of some of the dishes were an absolute belter! If you look past the price, like two croquettes for £12, it's amazing. Although it's called "Junk", it's essentially fine dining with a casual atmosphere. So it's not a place you'd go often for brunch. Junk are present in Edinburgh Street Food, which is FANTASTIC. Unfortunately it gives you a wrong expectation of the restaurant (as Junk in ESF is much cheaper and the portions are big, so opposite). Anyway, the food is definitely delicious, drinks are really good and the staff are lovely. So all really really good.....but it's odd to pay such a high price for small portions, with a 12.5% included tip. We hope the staff are paid fairly and well! I would definitely recommend Gluten free options available

Food 5/5 Every course looks and tastes exquisitely prepared. Service 3/5 The waitress was very friendly. However, perhaps because they were a bit busy, everything took very long: I waited for a long time for my order to be taken. Most of the food came relatively fast once I got to order them. Then, it took forever for the waitress to come take my dessert order, which came rather slowly. The whole dinner took ~2 hours, with only ~20 mins of eating. Also, at one point, my cutleries got taken away, and they forgot to replace them. Atmosphere 3.5/5 The place itself has a nice hippy vibe, albeit a bit cramped. However, I was sat at a window seat that I didn’t really like. It appeared dirty (although part of it probably isn’t actually dirty), there were some crumbs on the seat next to me, and there was an ant crawling around the table that bothered me for a large part of the meal. Bottom line: Gorgeous and tasty foods. Service and appearance could use some improvement.

I called ahead to book the tasting menu as I have to eat gluten free and they were so lovely and walked through all the options on the phone even though there really weren't many differences between myself and my partner's food in the end. The food was so good we had to check multiple times if it was gluten free (as we couldn't believe it could be that good AND gluten free iykyk) and every time it 100% was. We even forgot to take a picture of the dessert as it was just too yummy! Sophisticated yet humble with a contemporary twist. The venue (in the evening) was great at the atmosphere was perfect. The service was second to none. The red primitivo was perfect in accompaniment to the dishes the dealer dealt. The menu concept is fresh. I had a date at Junk. I had reserved a table for two and asked for a "tucked away, cozy spot". We were put right next to the bar where FOH hangs out and the till. Service was polite and ok but nothing insightful or even welcoming. Service was fast though and the pace that food came to the table was perfect. We had a round of drinks and 5 small plates. On the bad side the artichoke was beyond charred and I could only feel its burned taste. The deconstructed Ruben didnt really hit the mark though I wouldve loved it if you gave it any other name. The pigeon was just not there in terms of how the ingredients mixed. Loved the beef tartare, very well balanced and a perfect twist to the original. Cant recall the other plate. Portions are good sized, prices are a bit steep. Presentation is really good. Finally, there is simply no atmosphere. It didnt help that the place was empty apart from one loud Xmas Do table but I think it has to do with the space layout, decor and big glass windows leading to S Clerk St and service. Its a bland mix. And date wise, maybe go somewhere else? Overall its good enough food, but left puzzled by all the praise they have been receiving. Junk is not remarkable in any way apart from making the effort of trying doing something different.

Stepping into Junk, I was immediately captivated by its tastefully designed interior, which exuded a trendy yet cozy vibe. The atmosphere was infused with a subtle energy, creating the perfect backdrop for an enjoyable evening😌 The food at Junk was simply amazing. Every bite was a burst of delicious flavours, and the wine selection complemented the dishes perfectly👌🏻 However, the waitresses exhibited some peculiar behaviour, possibly due to our not booking a table or opting for the full 3-course meal. It was amusing but didn't negatively impact our overall enjoyment 😃😅 Living in close proximity, stumbling upon Junk was a fortunate discovery. Despite the minor hiccup, we're eager to return, this time armed with a reservation to fully savour what Junk has to offer in a more structured dining setting😉 *Notably, Junk's menu lacked ample vegan options. While our dining experience was delightful, a broader selection for plant-based eaters would enhance the inclusivity of the restaurant.*

Wanted to love this place as was recommended it a lot, but it wasn’t quite right for me. We were seated on a high table with bar style chairs even though we’d booked weeks in advance which was frustrating, and the service was far too attentive- I was still chewing when they were taking plates away, and we’d finished all of our food in under 30 minutes of arrival, which isn’t great when you’ve planned for a nice evening meal out and you’re spending a considerable chunk of money (about £68 for 4 small plates and 2 drinks). Most of the food itself was tasty and the presentation was stylish, but the Christmas moo tartare was a bit of a let down as it lacked any real flavour (all I could taste was mayo) and the texture was far too mushy and lacked crunch. It seems like we’re in the minority so maybe it was an off night for them! Hopefully so, but I unfortunately can’t recommend and wouldn’t personally come back.

We popped in for a glass of wine and were fully blown away by the standard of food and service. All of the staff were very kind and provided good knowledge of the menu and allergy processes (they have a separate allergy menu too!). Very professional service and would absolutely recommend.

Was here recently for my 21st birthday. Had booked for 15 people and ordered the tasting menu. Everything was perfect, the staff were friendly and unflustered, and the food was quite possibly, some of the best things I’ve ever eaten! (Try the lamb!). Many thanks to Junk, it made for such an enjoyable birthday and I will certainly be back x

Firstly, the food is great. Everything was delicious. In particular the gumbo and the Indian potato dish. The main problem was that we ordered the set menu, which I don't think was the best choice considering we all left feeling hungry. I'm not sure that they take the party size into consideration as most of the dishes were very small and couldn't really have been any smaller. So if there'd been two of us it probably would've been plenty. As it was we ended up with no more than a bite of each dish. It was such a shame because the food was great but essentially, in terms of protein we only ate a morsel of langoustine, a mussel each, a piece of sausage and a third of a chicken breast between us. I think if you go a la carte you'll have a much better time. A key improvement would be stipulating how many dishes were on the set menu so we wouldn't be shocked when the meal was over.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at a certain discreet establishment that has been generating quite a buzz among culinary aficionados. Nestled away from the bustling city streets, this hidden gem exudes an unassuming charm that belies its gastronomic ambitions. Upon entering, one is met with an unpretentious ambiance that feels almost clandestine, as if you've stumbled upon a well-kept secret. The dimly lit dining room, adorned with understated decor, sets the stage for what can only be described as an unforgettable culinary journey. The menu, carefully curated with an assortment of locally sourced ingredients, offers a symphony of flavors that dance upon your palate. Each dish is a meticulously crafted masterpiece, presenting an intriguing fusion of classic and avant-garde techniques. The chef's playful exploration of textures and flavors keeps you guessing, leaving your taste buds in a delightful state of intrigue. Service, though discreet, is impeccable. The staff possesses an uncanny ability to anticipate your needs without intruding upon your dining experience. It's as if they have mastered the art of invisibility, allowing you to savor every morsel in peace. In conclusion, this establishment is shrouded in an aura of mystery, making it a must-visit for those who appreciate culinary artistry in its most covert form. While I wouldn't dare suggest it's on the cusp of earning a Michelin star, I will say that its unique blend of flavors, impeccable service, and clandestine charm left me with a lingering desire to return, all while maintaining the delicious allure of a well-kept secret.

This place has a fine dining vibe: small tapas-like plates, beautifully presented. The food is inspired by street food around the world, with a few Scottish ingredients. Everything we’re tried was well made, with bold flavours. We particularly liked the spicier dishes. I can see us visiting again to try a few more dishes from their range. Recommended!

By far the best food we had during our visit in Edinburgh. We arrived on a busy Saturday evening without reservation, and the staff went above and beyond to still find a place for us, which we were really lucky to get, as it turned out later. We went for the secret menu of 7 dishes to share and some cocktails. Truly fantastic food and drinks, and genuinely friendly service. I'll come back, whenever I visit the city again.
