We can understand that the prices are scary: But the service, the quality of the dishes shows that the quality/quantity/price ratio did not bother us. While there were two of us, we had 5 dishes to share and that was more than enough for us. Excellent. We really enjoyed the cocktails and wine. But yes, this is not a restaurant to eat in a hurry. We took advantage and took our time.

Disappointing Sunday roast - tiny portions of meat! Had been to Junk before for a lovely midweek meal, and had high expectations for the roast. Although the meat was tasty (lamb special and beef), both options were served with a laughably small amount of meat for the £26 price point. It was very disappointing to have to ration one's mouthfuls (4-5 total of each type of meat), and try to fill up with the sides instead.

Warm welcome, incredible atmosphere (kudos to the musical playlist curator!!). The menu was so varied and exciting, the copy on the menu and restaurant is amusing and fun. The food was incredible, each dish was a talking point of excitement. We had an incredible night, the hard work and passion behind junk is evident. Thank you and keep rocking this amazing venture!

BEST SUNDAY ROAST IN EDINBURGH!! Can’t believe I only just visited Junk having lived 5 mins away for 6 months!! In a place like Edinburgh where you are spoilt for choice with restaurants I will only be recommending the Sunday dinner here in future. Portions were massive which is generally unheard of here and you’re getting complete value for money for it! We had the beef sirloin and the chicken (which was just fabulous). I must add that despite coming in at 6pm on a Sunday the food was super fresh and tasty, and the chicken was so succulent. I could not recommend more. The carrots and parsnips had so much flavour and I loved the kick of spice to the cauliflower cheese!! Servers were super lovely and made the experience better and when I asked to take away the remainders of my chicken they put it in tin foil shaped as a swan! :) To top it off the crème brulee dessert was absolutely lovely and made to perfection. Overall a complete hidden gem with staff that are doing everything right and we will be coming back to try their other menus soon!!

I put the one star because yes the food was just ok, but in no way was it worth the money. No value for money. We got the menu with 7 random dishes for 70 pounds per person and one of them was focaccia. We didn't like sweets at all. The lemon granita in the desserts was too sour to the point of being bitter. I wouldn't suggest it.

Expensive food without impressing, we chose a menu with 7 random dishes, the main was chicken breast…for £70 that made this menu the least bit of a joke…and the highlight was the dessert which was two courses a crème brûlée good and a lemon granita which was as dry as an inedible lemon!

Visited Junk on a Monday evening and was seriously impressed. The team did not expect a busy night and the front of house staff handled this with great energy and friendliness. Despite forgetting a couple of our dishes, they made up for it with two complimentary drinks and genuinely warm hospitality, which was appreciated. Now, the food. Absolute standouts were the coley in a Thai green inspired sauce, light, fragrant, and perfectly balanced and the pizza crunch, which was a genius twist on a guilty pleasure. Crispy, cheesy, and ridiculously satisfying. Junk nails that street food vibe but with proper attention to flavour and fine dining refinement to each element. Definitely worth a visit if you're into bold, comforting food with a few surprises thrown in. Will be back in August!

This modern restaurant in Newington, just off South Clerk Street, offers fantastic food and well-crafted cocktails. The Black Forest cocktail was a highlight—rich yet not overly sweet, with a chocolate stick and black cherry garnish. The Negroni was well-balanced, and the Paloma was excellent. We opted for the seven-course tasting menu (£65), which was mostly great, though two of the courses felt more like amuse-bouches rather than full dishes. The crab and tomato cracker and pork skewer were both delicious but quite small. The burrito-style empanada with tomato, chilies, and olives was beautifully cooked, though a flatbread might have complemented it better than the pastry. The wild garlic pesto bread was a standout and might have been better placed earlier in the meal. The Ethiopian-inspired chicken dish with a rich sauce, scotch egg, and red sauce was an interesting twist, but it didn’t quite feel like a main course. The palate cleanser (apple) was refreshing again felt it should not been included as part of the 7 courses and the chocolate fondant dessert was a satisfying finish. Service was good, but the atmosphere had some downsides. Our original seating at the far end of the restaurant was uncomfortable—trapped between two brick walls—so we asked to move. We were offered a shared table for six, despite many empty tables around, which wasn’t ideal. Additionally, the music was quite loud in that area. Overall, the food was great, but the portioning of the tasting menu felt a little stretched, and the seating arrangements could have been better. With some small tweaks, this could easily be a 5-star experience.

I now know the meaning of ‘hidden gem’. My partner and I recently moved out of the inner city and so we’ve been looking for local places to eat and have a nice glass of wine. We came across Junk on Google maps and thought we would give it a try. I am so happy we did… The food was amazing!! You could either pick several small plates from the menu or go for ‘Dealers choice’ which is the chefs take on a tasting menu. We decided to select a few things from the menu and we were not disappointed. All plates were delicious and generous in size. We didn’t leave room for dessert but could see other tables around us have something… it looked divine!! The staff were all so lovely and service was very prompt. We ordered a lot of food and also had alcohol (they have a great choice of wines BTW). The total bill was just over £100, service included so very reasonably priced. I’m so happy we found this place, it’s my new favourite restaurant in Edinburgh and I didn’t even need to go into the city and pay for parking! They have a Sunday roast which we will definitely be going back for. Thanks so much Junk :) **Up date - so we went back for the Sunday road: - The beef was beautifully cooked - Very generous portions of the veg which were all well seasoned - Giant Yorkshire puddings - We also got a side of the leeks; I was say its a must. Super yummy -The creme brûlée in the best in Edinburgh IMO ;)

Prepare to be blown away with this incredible food experience! Absolutely delicious, thoughtfully crafted, surprising dishes. We are a family of “foodies” and this was one of our very favorite meals ever! We chose the 5 small plate chef choices and were unprepared for how incredibly delicious and unique each plate was. Given the 5star quality of every dish, one might expect a more snobbish atmosphere, but instead, the setting was comfortable and hip, and the server, Kate, was warm and friendly and very knowledgeable about each dish and the wines. Honestly, this restaurant is worth a trip to Edinburgh just for the pleasure of the meal. We booked early, so we would recommend doing likewise. A day later, and we are still raving about this meal!

In a foodie and this place was really impressive. Almost everything on the menu can be made gluten free. The server was terrific and atmosphere had an awesome vibe. My husband said the celeriac dish could use just one more kind of celeriac but other than that it was just perfect. We had one of everything and no complaints. Meal between a couple of friends in November 2024 Summary: overall too expensive, the dishes are good, careful presentation The dishes are tiny, tapas style, but without the price of a tapa... The waiter pushes the consumption a little too much when ordering, which makes you uncomfortable... The style of cooking is not clear, said to be a combination of several foreign cuisines but we get a little lost, and the associations are not always relevant The crispy chicken is absolutely uninteresting (and expensive!), the sauce which accompanies it called cherry sauce does not have the desired effect, it looks like a mayo-ketchup mixture... nothing to do with it. map. The neighbors at the tables complained that the intensity of the spices was too high, but that was not our feeling. We had 3 additional glasses to accompany the dishes. 12.5GB a glass for a rather ordinary white wine (white Albarino), it's too expensive. Mixed experience

Ordered more than half of the menu and pretty much every dish was excellent - not a particular fan of the gumbo nor the eggplant though nothing wrong with either. I don't know what sorcery was used with the food to make it taste so good but the flavors were magic! The macaroni - just wow! At the risk of sounding pretentious, the texture of the chicken gyro was exceptional. Absolutely loved the whole mackerel in rendang sauce - was so tender... just amazing! Even the potatoes... seriously. Too busy eating so no time to take photos. Will be back for sure! 2nd time around wasn't as good since they changed the menu... Some hits but some misses... The 3rd visit was good again - some really well-made tasty stuff although a bit awkward to share some of them... still not a fan of a couple of them but nothing wrong with those. They also have a place at Edinburgh Street Food with a limited menu so you can try some of their stuff there. Overall consistently pretty good - small plates mean even if you don't like where their creativity took them sometimes, you'll certainly love some of the dishes. Safe to say they know what they're doing in the kitchen. Make sure to save room for their well-thought-out desserts with the perfect mix of textures and flavours!

I booked Junk without really knowing what to expect - I was worried it might be slightly gimmicky given it's ethos of upmarket 'Junk' food. I was proven more than wrong. Firstly the staff were amazing - so charming and friendly and the perfect amount of attentive. The hot honey margarita was so good I had to order two and I had an espresso martini at the end of the meal that was creamy, foamy and STRONG. Now to the food - the snacks were perfect and left you eager for the main dishes, the crowdie/chilli oil hummus with the bread was maybe my favorite part of the meal. The tomato small plate was 10/10 and the main of 'chicken Caesar' finished the savory dishes off perfectly, the Caeser dressing was so strong and tangy. Desserts were good of maybe a couple of notches below the savory food. I'll be back here.

Disappointing birthday dinner. I was looking forward to trying Junk for my birthday however unfortunately the dining set up, very busy service and finding tinfoil in my food made this a disappointing experience. We were sat at high stools opposite the bar, facing the wall. It was cramped and busy with waiters passing behind us much of the time so difficult to relax but they couldn’t accommodate us at a table. This setup didn’t work well for the small plates menu as we ran out of space quickly. The staff were doing their best but were visibly very stressed. Initially the food was lovely (fried chicken, confit chicken, Bombay potatoes, monkfish special, broccoli) but I found a piece of tinfoil in the confit chicken. Our server apologised and took the plate off our bill. We weren’t offered a replacement dish or some drinks by way of further apology. The food was genuinely tasty up to that point but the overall experience was really disappointing. I was looking forward to trying some of their drinks but it wasn’t a relaxing experience to enjoy a drink. I’d love to see what this place is like on a good day and their Sunday roasts look tempting but I couldn’t recommend it from this visit.

Your wine recommendations were perfect, and your attention to making sure we didn't miss anything made the evening truly special. You are a true star! P.S. We hope you recover soon and can do what you love again. You are always welcome in Munich!

Great food. Delicious small plates - and my favourite dessert of the year so far (and I like my desserts). Eat the cherry bomb!

A rare place where the food is better than the menu. Not many items but way more tastes in each than the menu suggests. All high quality, well presented and decent value. We ordered more of several dishes.

I was not prepared to be blown away! I’d tasted their food at Edinburgh Street Food and it was insanely good, but I like to keep my expectations on an even keel. I knew they’d produce good food, but what I was served was incredible! They’re bar & restaurant is on South Clerk Street, it’s unassuming inside and out and gives nothing away. However set a foot inside and the staff are lovely, very welcoming, attentive but not in your face. The menu is simple but this is elevated and sophisticated junk food. About A Mouthful - 3 dishes at £5 each Sharing’s Caring - 12 dishes, 3 dishes for £32 and they recommend 6 dishes for 2 people so expect to pay £64 They do have a lunchtime special available, selected dishes, 3 for £25. We tried the Wee Buns of Fun (£5) - white crab, brioche, szechuan Better than Gregs (£5) - chicken sausage roll, mango, curry These 2 ‘starter’ bites set the tone. It sets your tastebuds up for the party that is about to commence, as well as a feast for the eyes. The szechuan in the Wee Buns of Fun really creeps up on you and makes your mouth tingle but it also creates the need for more. Greggs have nothing on this Chicken Sausage Roll - sensational and if they sold these in full size, there would be a queue out the door. We chose 7 of the dishes plus dessert. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully cooked, perfectly balanced; well seasoned with every element carefully placed on the plate to play its part in creating exceptional mouthfuls of food. Legs Like a Duck - confit duck, tattie scone and Hoiracha. Your eyes light up when you see this being delivered to your table. The tattie scone holds this together and I loved the popped rice on top. The textures are the magic in this dish. ‘Mon Ya Bass - stonebass, makhani and onion bahji. I love their play on textures and flavours. The fish was impeccably cooked and I commend the chef in cooking that fish skin to perfection. The onion bahji was crunchy and perfect for mopping up that curry sauce. Monsieur Crab - soft shell crab karaage, gem and yuzu. Crunchy and moreish in all the right places. The lettuce brought a lovely freshness to the dish whilst the yuzu brought the zing. Le Kebab - lamb neck, ezme and tzatziki. Oh this was just downright yum! Pink and tender lamb on a bed of turkish salsa atop a fluffy warm thick flatbread. Do Scallops have Tails? - Orkney scallop, ox tail and onion rings (£3 supplement). Of course I was going to order this, it’s scallop! The ox tail stuffed into the centre of the onion rings was unctuous to the point of umami heaven. The scallop bringing some serious sexy vibes to this plate of food. Moo Point -beef tartare, Hondashi mayo and chilli oil. I’ve not had beef tartare in years, then all of a sudden, I’ve had it 4 times in the last month! It’s making a come back and for good reason, it’s bloody delish! The crackers and the chillies just elevate this dish even more. Forever Blowing Bubbles - bubble and squeak, ham hock and egg. When a dish makes you think of breakfast, then it must be good. The egg was on point, bringing forth a bright yellow runny yolk, but I felt that the ham hock was slightly missing in this dish, however this did not distract you from wanting to devour every morsel. Treacle Tart - milk sorbet and peanut. A good solid dessert. Loved the milk sorbet. The Jaffa - chocolate, blood orange and chai masala. Just think Jaffa Cake but larger with a little spice. We ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2021. This crisp and refreshing white wine with its vibrant acidity and zesty flavours was a match made in heaven for the hot weather and every dish we ate. Its light body and clean finish made it incredibly easy to drink. I’ve fallen in love with Junk. The food is outstanding and possibly one of the top restaurants in Edinburgh. I very highly recommend it and if you were treating yourself and someone special, order everything on the menu! I've also been for Sunday Roast and its downright fabulous.

While the food is good, avoid this place on Friday evenings. Service is subpar, slow, and requires chasing staff for action. It's cash only. We ordered two mains, and they asked if we would accept the second after the first. If two people order simultaneously, we expect food to arrive at a similar time, not after one person finishes. They need more staff.

Huge Scotch whiskey collection with over 400 choices including ones from defunct distilleries. Very knowledgeable and nice staff. They also have a couple of private rooms as well as Snugs seating against the windows. Very nice.

I really liked the place. Very cosy and extremely helpful staff. I could easily use the restroom, pump milk for my baby and ask for water bottle refills. The haggis I bought was vegan one and it was quite yum. They have merchandise of hagis as well which was quite fun to see 😄
