We decided on the hotpot, half spicy and half bland. The offering was good but I wouldn't go overboard. The fish side broth was disappointing with lots of bones in the fish slices, which was extremely annoying that I gave up on eating any more fish. The dim sum offering, which we tried, wasn't too tasty. The only thing that tasted was the spicy side broth, giving the blandness some life. It wasn't a good experience and I'll give this place a miss altogether.

Came with my son back in January 2020 and it’s still my favourite Chinese steamboat buffet dinner in London where we can eat all we can and have a lovely time. The bone broth is amazing and you can have a vegetarian version too. Lovely place. Need to book a table if large groups as waiting time may be long for evenings or weekends.

Visited on the Chinese New Year. Great service and although busy we were not rushed, waiters were really helpful. We had a very enjoyable meal. The prawn toast was the best I've ever had. Being vegetarians we had a tofu dish which was good, the waiter even heated all our dishes up as we needed a break! Would definitely go back there.

We read that this was the best place in London to get wuhan dry noodles.... Whatever they are ha ha. What I can say is whether they are the best or not, I don't know but they are fantastic. So is the aubergine hot pot. We have been twice now and yes, service is hit and miss pretty much like any Chinese place in London and yes, they do have some pretty bad looking generic Chinese dishes (sweet and sour etc) but if you go for something authentic, it's fantastic and most the?mains are around £8.

Visited with family a few days ago. Not too busy - unlike other places nearby. Food is okay - perhaps typical of cheaper Chinese restaurants. Duck stir-fries contained little meat but were okay. They add a 12.5% service charge. Main issue was £5.80 for each portion of very ordinary fried rice which is a rip-off. Basic surroundings. Service was okay. I think there are much better places nearby.

We arrived in Chinatown on the Saturday between Christmas and New Year just as folk from the theatres' were coming out. Everywhere was so busy with queues outside and chose Joy Luck purely because there was no queue! Good choice - the surroundings are basic but we were shown promptly to a table and given a menu. We opted for one of the set menu's and have it say it was excellent value for money - all the food was hot, tasty and swift service. Would definitely go again if in the area and wanting a good value meal.

This is our favourite restaurant in China Town. Yes, the surroundings are scruffy but the Wuhan Noodles are the best in London. As a vegatarian I love the Aubergine with Chilli sauce and a cucumber salad. My partner raves the Salt Duck Egg Yolk cod. The staff are helpful and the food comes quickly. Couldn’t recommend it more.

OK, so the place isn't fine dining, it's not somewhere to linger all night, it's a bit scruffy and the staff have seen it all, so if you're a bit precious, or you're trying to impress somebody, don't go there. But if you want really good, tasty Chinese hotpot, then do go. We've walked by the place a dozen times over the years and thought 'nah', but this time we saw people eating hotpot and thought 'why not', and we are glad we did. There's loads of other stuff on the menu, but we opted for hotpot. Now there are several options, but we went for a slightly Thai influenced one with beef, with side orders of pak-choi and mooli to cook in it (from a long list of options - seafood, meat & veg). We're not big eaters so ordered a single serving size (rather than the per person one), and didn't have any rice or noodles, which people with bigger appetites might want. They fired up the burner on the table and the pot arrived - a thickish broth with loads of big chunks of beef, along with loads of tofu and big fresh chillis. We popped the veg in and started hot-potting (if that's a word). The broth was full of flavour - spicy but not dangerously so - and the slow cooked beef was beautifully tender. The bill, with service and one glass of half decent merlot for Mrs Ex-Punk, as I was driving, was £36. You can't knock it at that price. So, it's likely to be our go-to place in Chinatown.

The people writing negative reviews seem uniformly to either hate Chinese food or to expect that their water ought to be a bowing, deferent Jeeves. Like it or lump it, the service is brusque, but for £7.50 for the superb Wuhan Dry Noodles, and not much more for a tounge-tingling sour noodle soup, plus one of the best laksas in London, what reasonable person would complain?

My experience is good tasty food and generous portions but not a particularly attractive restaurant inside and lack of table space once the various dishes have been served. I tried to order a gin and tonic but they don't stock tonic - coke was suggested. Not a great start. We ordered the set dinner priced around £19 per person and asked if we could substitute ( for one person only ) the chicken / sweet corn soup for the other soup but that was refused. Our soups arrived and having got a quarter into the soup the crispy duck turned up which was delicious. Again, partly way through our duck and the soup not yet finished, the main courses arrived and we were far from ready. The food was great but it was all being served too fast. I still cannot understand why they removed the small bowls that you usually use for your rice and food. We ended up using the side plates under the soup bowls instead. Not once did any server check on our meals or ask us if we required anything or second drinks yet they automatically added 12.5% to the bill. I have given an average score but if you ignore the lack of service and the rush, the food itself deserves a higher score.

I was on a solo mission this time, so I got in and I was sat by the window, although with the window posters, not really great views to be honest. The local is pretty small (unless there are more floors upstairs that I didn’t get the chance to visit), and it doesn’t stand out by its decoration, pretty simple by the way. This used to be The Friendly Inn and was owned by a lady who used to go table to table talking to the clients. I hadn't been to the restaurant for a long time and when I went there for dinner I found it had changed hands. Undaunted, I sat in the appointed seat and began perusing the menu. I had always had the same dishes when it was the Friendly Inn. It saved having to make a choice and I knew the food was to my taste. Cooked by Piggy as the owner called him. Not sure if that was his real name or just a term of endearment.I ordered hot and sour soup, crispy aromatic duck and salt and chilli prawns. However I had to wait quite a long time for the food to come. While I was eating I was pestered by what looked like fruit flies flitting around my food. I spent six months in India so flies don't bother me but these were persistent. I was dining late and while I was sitting there the staff went on their break. It's happened before, it didn't phase me until I noticed that ALL of the staff went on break together. What's worse is they turned up the music. Some ghastly electronic tunes which obviously appealed to the younger generation (I'm a grandparent). I managed to get through my meal without having more liquids and asked for the bll. When I say asked, I mean I shouted over at the table and did get anacknoeledgement. But no bill. I repeated my request but still nobody moved. In temper I slammed my glass on the table and immediately got their attention and the bill. Under normal circumstances I would have left a tip even though they added on service charge. I should have refused to pay even the service charge but didn't. Now, having vented my frustrations, I'm ready to talk about the food. I didn't like it. The duck was ok although I think the flies came from the soggy cucumber slices. However the hot and sour soup was neither hot nor sour. I put in three spoons of Chilli oil to give it some 'bite'. The prawns were just deep fried 'butterfly' prawns without any dressing (salt, chilli and onion).I have to add that I did go back there again. The service was moderately better but the food quality was not. No third time for Joy Luck restaurant

Meat and seafood are fresh and we recommend the prawns, noodle fried tofu, fish meat, beef and string mushrooms. Of course there's other meat like pork and chicken. My husband and I consider ourselves hot pot connoisseurs and even for us there was some newness in the sauce options on offer. A neat thing this place does is that offers a split pot with a spicy and non-spicy soup base. One person in our group ordered a more conventional lemon chicken that was not particularly great. Our server was a very young man and likely not very experienced. We had to ask for obvious things like napkins, chopsticks and silverware. I ate here with 2 Chinese friends and my girlfriend on the evening of the 27/12. The food was good - on par with many other noodle bars around London. However, the experience itself was marked by rudeness, sarcasm, and aggressive patronising. When I asked to change tables because I thought one on the other side of the restaurant was bigger and therefore more suitable for 4 people, I was told that it 'was obviously' the same size as the one I was sitting at - As if to suggest that I knew no better. Then, on placing a simple order of table water, we were served 4 steaming hot glasses of water, which was met with a refusal to replace them. It took a second request to from a different member of staff to replace them. Furthermore, our order of dim sum came 20 minutes after we had finished our main meals. I refused to pay the service charge, which I made very clear to the staff on my departure, outlining the reasons for it. I received no apology, and spent several minutes arguing with the staff. As I exited, I was told to 'never come back again'. At least, on that statement, we agreed.

You will have no Joy if you visit here and it will be your bad luck! The food was average, but the service was terrible. The toilets are HORRIBLE, there was water all over the floor together with tissue paper and the taps just dripped cold water. The place was generally unkempt. The charge for service was so unnecessary and undeserved as the waiting time was 30 mins between courses.I would never in a million years recommend this place.

Food came 30s after ordering and lacked flavour. The quality was really appalling.Service is truly terrible. You're not even given a glass with your drink.Probably one of the worst Chinese restaurants I've ever been.

ate there three weeks ago, when asked if the meal I wanted to order included rice was told 'yes', so needed to order something more if I wanted to pay with card (minimum spent 10 pounds) so ordered something more. when the bill arrived I had to pay extra for rice plus they charged me more for the main meal than the price in menu. If I had known the price of rice wasn't included would not have needed to order anything else to to spent over 10 pounds. I explained them this and they said they did not tell me the meal included rice and were reluctant to sort this out even though I insisted and they rudely said "what you want us to do now?" and did not give any apology either. had to leave as they refused to talk to me.

Was with my friend who is allergic to chilli and would cause an adverse allergy reaction. Ordered a plain looking bowl of noodles and assured it wouldn't be spicy at all. Turns out it's a bowl of disaster waiting to happen! Had it taken back and all that was done was they removed the pieces of chilli floating around and added a whole bunch of water. And for the rest of our meal, the waiters and waitresses were calling us (essentially) uncultured people, talking about how "she can't even take a little chilli, and to be a Chinese!" Visit here if you want to be bullied as if you were back in grade 4. Terrible terrible terrible service. Menu not true to its image/name

We ordered crispy duck and some dim sum dishes. Service was good, and the duck and drinks were served quite promptly. However, it was a long wait for the dim sum. In the end, we cancelled the last dish, as did,the next table guest. Food quality is good, and the ambience cosy and spacious

I came here with a colleague Monday evening. The place is ok, and I absolutely loved the service, everyone was so nice and polite and helpful. Unfortunately, although I am pretty crazy about the Asian food, I didn't like much what I had (a menu with duck), so I was a bit disappointed. I'd go back, though, and try again :).

We came here a few years ago when it was The Friendly Inn and it was excellent , so I thought I would try again. What has happened to this place ?The service was awful and the food was poor. In fact the menu was horrid .how much for a can of coke? reallyI asked for water . Warm with no Ice ,thanks and maybe clean the walls where the food is stuck on the walls. Felt very much like a youth club to be fair. And to top it off the bill . Service charge on top . Why? You're service was rubbish and why did you not write down what we had on the bill instead of just a total priceAVOID THIS PLACE!!!!! or can the last owners come back .

Don't listen to the negative reviews here. They've clearly ordered the wrong dishes! If you're looking for inauthentic Westernised Chinese food, this won't be your bag. But if you're after authentic, Sichuanese food with plenty of spice and flavour, this is the place for you!!! 1 star less for the high service charge, when service is only okay. Other than that, fantastic.

This is probably the best Szechuan restaurant I have visited. The ambience is typical London centre, slightly cram but reasonable tidy. The food was great, reasonably priced. 3 of us in group, all ordered noodles, 2 chilli hot and one plain. All three tasted good. I had the plain mix noodle(3 types of noodles in the bowl), in a lamb broth. Probably the best lamb broth I have ever tasted. The other 2 chilli hot noodles were great too. Cannot be certain, the noodle tasted as if they were freshly made.Had a few Szechuan style chilli hot side dishes, including aubergines, pig ears, beef and tripe slices, also a chives pancake. All were fresh and tasty.Service is courteous and polite, kind of China Town style.

A friend took us there to try the Shaxi fried noodles which I've tried for the first time and there were really interesting and tasty. The restaurant in terms of design is nothing special, but the stuff was friendly, the place was clean and the food was good without any surprises.I haven't tried any other places in Chinatown London, but this was a rather good start.I would easily revisit...

We went there first many years ago and have been back each trip to London since. The food is lovely. As testament to the quality there are always lots of people in this very popular restaurant. Love the busyness of this place and the food is superb. Located in the London Chinatown it is a very interesting place to be.Try the Sharks Fin Soup and the noodle dishes are superb.

We used to go to the old Friendly Inn but given now that it has changed name and owner, it's not Friendly Inn anymore. The food is not proper Chinese food at all and all dishes are very expensive. Be aware that the service charge at this restaurant is compulsory! Will not go there again for sure!

As a family we've used the Friendly Inn for years. We got up there last night to find it had changed name and owner, but thought we'd give it a go anywayBig mistake!!!We were taken upstairs and the waiter just put the menus on the table and walked off, we had to call him over to order our drinks and food, only some of our starters came, the rest came with our mains. The chicken curry had more potato in it than chicken and tasted really bland and the spring rolls tasted like they were brought from Icelands Never once did the waiter come over to see if our food was okThe atmosphere was non existent and we couldn't wait to get out, on getting the bill we saw we were being charged over £10 for a service we felt we didn't receive. The toilet were dirty, wet floor and toilet roll everywhere. There was no hot water and only drops coming out of the cold tap.I spoke to the manager as I was leaving and she just kept saying sorry, she didn't even offer to drop the service charge!!!On conclusion......Food....blandAtmosphere....non existent Service....even worse Warning...stay away!!!

Having decided to eat in this restaurant, the staff are rude and don't care much. Having ordered and eaten our starters, which I might add were over priced. I then call the waitress over who didn't seem to care and didn't explain any of the dishes that I asked. The food was bland and crispy chilli beef at £9:90 would expect better. Sorry I won't be coming back.

Called here at the weekend as my friend wanted a Chinese meal - we chose Set Meal 3 at £16 plus some change per head. The food was served relatively quickly, which actually seemed like they were trying to rush us at times, with quite sullen staff. The food was pretty bland, but plenty of it. The bill arrives with 'S/C' added as part of the total, which is Service Charge, or tip and came to 12.5%. As the service was poor, we paid the bill with a smaller tip, but were aggressively told that the Service Charge was compulsory and part of the bill, not optional, nor dependant on the quality received - definitely will NOT be going here again, or recommending it to anyone other than people I don't like!

We couldn't find the Chinese restaurant at which we had eaten a few years ago in London's Chinatown, and were getting frustrated enough that I said "The next restaurant we see is where we're going to eat!" Boy, was I lucky. There was the Joy Luck and as we went in we realized that the place was almost full and we were the only Westerners there...that's how good the food is! Soothing music and polite service, along with delicious food and good prices make this the place we'll look for next time.

The restaurant was recommended by a local store. The menu is good because it shows you pictures of the food which helps you to decide what you fancy. The food was exactly as pictured and tasted amazing, Some of the best chinese food i've had. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 was because the atmosphere was lacking, quite a plain environment a step up from a cafe, the staff were friendly and helpful. The prices were average for other restaurants in the area.

I've never felt compelled to write a report before, but the food was so disappointing as this is the first time my wife and I have had a chance away from the little one to share a meal together in peace. The dumplings were heated nicely but get tasted old and not fresh. The noodles were bland. The waitress looked like she had swallowed ten bags of lemons by how sour she looked. I'd recommend this place if you were someone I hate. Avoid.

The food is not bad. Much better than the many all-you-can-eat-buffet restaurants in chinatown. Price is not expensive, but not student budget either. Service if you're upstairs is a little slow. Will go back if I fancy the food again, but not going on my recommended list of restaurants.

There are so many restaurants to choose from when you're in London's Chinatown. We wandered up and down the main street looking for something small and intimate. Joy Luck seemed to fit the bill. Downstairs was full but there is an upstairs too. It was late in the evening but Dim Sum is offered any time. We ordered a few things plus hot and sour soup and a chicken-vegetable dish. It was the best tasting Chinese food I've had in a long time. The chicken dish was not gooey with starch, the soup was truly spicy and the Dim Sum was so flavourful! The pork buns were hot and fluffy and the jasmine tea was fragrant, with real tea leaves in the pot. Plus, it looked like there were plenty of locals eating here and not just theatre-goers.

Five of us went here on a Saturday late afternoon. First we were told no rom, then all of a sudden someone else came and got us and asked us to follow him upstairs. We did and we stood there whilst they ask a couple to move to a smaller tabe so we could sit there ...embarrasing !!!! We sat there and waited approx 20 mins until our drinks order was taken. Then a further 20 mins for our food order to be taken. After 45 mins our starter came. We then asked for some more drinks and 15 mins later they still didnt arrive. Seeing a fresh table with 8 seated behind us, received their started within 10 mins...that was it....we decided to leave. The waiter did not care at all that we wanted to leave, obvioulsy they could re-seat our table easily. We debated with the ladt at the till about paying or not paying the 12% service charge, but she would not drop this. We left ....never to return. I understand of course that Chinatown resturants will be busy....but they have always been busy....this shouldt be any surpise to those runing this establishment....they charge enougth to be able to recruit more staff. Dont go unless you have a whole eveningpsare to spend it in here.

The quality of the food was average at best and the wine was overpriced. The service was also overbearing.
