Had lunch one weekday last week. Despite a large group before us the food was served reasonably quickly. All the food was good and quantities were good too. The service was good throughout and decent value for money. Would return.

Visited this lunchtime with my girlfriend and her meal was awful. Jacket potato with prawns and Marie Rose sauce comprised half a jar of mayonnaise with a few shrimps. When asked after a couple of mouthfuls whether the meal was ok we said no and could we change to with chilli con carne which was what I had. We were told we would be charged for the extra meal so declined and left most of the meal. Would never go back after such a bad experience.

Having been before we chose this venue as a treat for friends, one of whom was retiring. As soon as we arrived we should have turned tail and escaped!! Our table was situated immediately in front of the restaurant bar - so close that the drinkers could have sat on my friend's shoulder. There were obviously more drinkers than diners, it was extremely noisy and our table felt like it was an 'added extra' due to overbooking. Our waitress kept apologising for the cramped conditions and the noise but the whole experience was unpleasant. We were not disappointed with the food but nothing made up for the atmosphere we had to tolerate. There is an adequate bar area and we felt that the restaurant should have been reserved for diners. In spite of knowing that we were affected by the noise and overcrowding no reduction to the bill was offered and not even a free coffee! Maybe the landlady should decide whether she wants to run a nice place to eat or a noisy pub!

Went here for Sunday lunch. The place is lovely but badly let down by service and quality of food. We will not be returning any time soon. For those interested in the detail: The bar person who took our order missed off one of the starters. Two of us ordered Prawn Cocktail, very strangely presented (deconstructed?), pile of prawns in sauce at one end of the plate, a pile of shredded lettuce in the middle and a slice of brown bread at the end. No dressing on the leaves and no butter for the bread. Butter was asked for and arrived from the freezer. We had not finished our starters when the main courses arrived with the comment "are you ready for these yet?", we replied 'not really' but they were put on the table anyway. Manager/Owner said "we did not mean to rush you but the chef got a bit confused". (Probably rushing to get back out to the car park to have another cigarette - which is where he was when we arrived!) Mains arrived served on searingly hot plates, which were carried by the waitress using the most disgustingly dirty tea towels, commented on this and the next plate was carried using a dishcloth. Between us we ordered the roasts, ribs and a burger. Burger and ribs probably the best of the lot. Roasts were mass catering style, precooked and sliced meat and pretty tasteless overheated veg. Ordered a drink which had to be chased when it did not appear after 20 mins. This place has such potential, with nice dining area and lovely garden, it was not overly busy and they were clearly struggling to offer any sort of quality service. The Owner/Manager(?) was polite and welcoming but did not appear to be on top of things.

This is one of our local pubs which we have visited on many occasions and had excellent food and service. Visitied on Saturday night since under new management. Very dissapointing. Menu slightly changed to one still on website. Service was poor, waited ages to order and starts took over half an hour, whilst others, who arrived after us, already had their main meals. Two of us had the king prawn and mango salad, what salad it was more like a soup swimming in bits of mango and grapefruit, not a good combination. Two of us had slow cooked pork belly, only had to look to see it was definetly not slow cooked as there was so much fat on the top with a tiny bit of meat underneath which was as tough as old boots. Sauce was completely different to my sister in laws, hers was thick with lumbs of apple, mine was like water, no apple and very bitter. Asked to see the manager who apologised and took both meals of the bill. Prices and portions are expensive and small. We do not mind paying a bit more to have a nice quality well cooked meal, but after Saturday's visit defintely not value for money or well cooked, will not be going back. What a shame as this used to have a very good reputation for excellent food and service, not anymore.

We came here for Sunday lunch for a change and found it a pleasant surprise. The dining room was nicely decorated in a contemporary style, leather dining chairs etc. The barman showed us to our table but then disappeared for quite a long time before taking our drinks order, and another long pause before a waitress appeared and took our food order. Neither of the staff smiled once, and I started to wonder if they were a couple who'd had a row that morning and that maybe coming here was a mistake. But when the place started to fill up with other diners the atmosphere improved, and the food proved to be great: generous portions and well cooked.traditional roasts with all the trimmings. I tried the nut roast as there wasn't a poultry option; it was good, but a little small when compared to the stacks of roast beef and pork that were on offer! It was very good value though, compared to other pubs in the area, and the waitress was actually very helpful, if not very smiley. We'll definitely be back some time soon.. Just hope the staff can live up to the pub's name next time!

My friend had chicken curry for nearly £9 which she really enjoyed, and I went for the chilli chips which was also nearly £9. For that I got a large portion of chips which were really nice, crispy on the outside but a pretty small bowl of chilli. The balance was wrong with too many chips and not enough chilli, and a fairly high price I thought for what it was.

We visited this pub on a Sunday lunchtime to celebrate my husband's birthday. We arrived at 12.50 and I noticed that there was just one other car in the car park. We went in and the pub seemed to be empty but there may have been people round the other side. The "decor" was bland as though someone had visited one of those vast furniture stores and bought a job lot of matching light oak effect tables and chairs. It was very clean and whilst not cold, it seemed lacking in warmth. "Simply Red" was playing though the speakers. We were served by a very friendly girl who served us quickly. The soup was pronounced excellent, the quiche got comments from both boys that it just looked like a slab of yellow, but tiny pieces of bacon were identified on the other side. My pate was perfectly ordinary served with some crunchy sliced baguette some fresh salad and some sickly onion syrup stuff. For the main course two of us had lamb, two had beef and my husband had haddock. The lamb was a generous portion served with one enormous roast potato and three tiny ones the vegetables which came separately were cooked perfectly, the lamb sat in a sea of beef gravy. I think it was beef. At any rate it had nothing to do with the lamb. The same gravy surrounded the beef which got no comment at all. My husband said his haddock was delicious. It was perched on top of a pile of chips evidently trying to have nothing to do with the sea of lemon syrup sauce which surrounded it. By this time the place was comparatively heaving with two or three other tables occupied. "SimplyRed" had come round again on the tape. We decided to have our deserts at home. It cost £85 including drinks for the five of us. I came away feeling that it was run by people who hadn't been out much themselves; who didn't really know what real gravy was like. It should be made from the water the vegetables are cooked in, it should contain the juices of the roast meat. It should be delicious and served separately. So many of the components of a good lunch were here but the vision is lacking. Almost, but not quite.

I wish trip advisor had a rating between average and very good because that's what the Jolly Brewers deserves. It serves standard pub fare but gives proper table service and does it better than average. But it's not 'very good'. Service is first class and it's good to see one waiter taking care of the bar and about 20 diners without any problems. Decent wine choice and generous portions especially if you like chips. The wife loved her bangers and mash but my fish wasn't as good as I'd get at the Histon Frier. Go there if your in the neighbourhood but don't make a long journey!

Fair taste, but not worth it, compared to other pubs.Overall I would say that it is a good place to arrange a large group outing, they really offered a good dinner twice, but when on your own, it is not the place to go, there are much better and cheaper pubs out there.

I have recently reviewed this and had a lovely meal in a welcoming setting. In the last two occasions I had a terrible meal served by a waitress that really couldn't be bothered. I am not sure if it was a new chef but the veg had been microwaved to death and the meal not nice. The final straw and the one that made us decide never to return. We were pleased to see it was a different waitress accompanied by man behind the bar it was unusually busy. Again we were pleased to see the lamb tarine on the menu. We waited to place our order. The man behind the bar stood pointing out to the young girl what needed doing but did not even help her get drinks. Eventually she brought our meal and it was awful it had a bitter almost burnt taste not at all like the last one we had. We sat with dirty plates for a while the man behind the bar looking over and then looking for the waitress who was rushed off her feet. When she returned to the bar he pointed to our table. She came over grabbed the plate asking if we want desert. As we waited for her to take our order guests arrived to book into the accomodation. They spoke to the man behind the bar. He called the waitress over have her the keys and she left to show them over. In her absence he stood behind the bar doing nothing. We decided not to stay any longer and for the first time we saw him work he took our payment. I have seen him there before. He told me to move my coat as it was in the way of the kitchen door as he carried meals out. On this occasion though he did nothing which was more frustrating than the poor girl running round. I felt I had to share this and retract my previous review. It is like they have lost interest in their customers and maybe the old chef had left. I will not return so can't advise others to.

I guess two points make this review separate from some of the others provided. I was part of a fairly large group, and many were veggies!I was surprised how few staff (1) when we arrived were available to serve drinks while we gathered. This meant quite a lengthy wait to place drinks orders. More people did appear and disappear throughout but it was all a bit 'hit and miss'! When we did sit down the orders were taken in reasonable time, although request for a something other than the very limited veggie options were met with abject indifference by a chef, and the waitress. Fair enough, they never said they cater particularly well for us veggies! The food chosen arrived in good time and was very tasty. For starters most of us had a delicious butternut and rocket soup. For mains, I had a moroccan vegetable terrine, in fact a number of us did and tasty as it was, it might have been even better served with couscous. instead of rice. Very nice all the same!Didn't have dessert so no comment to add here.On paying the bill, I noticed just before leaving that I had been overcharged by £7.00. This, and a few mistakes with the meals order did let things down somewhat. Teething troubles I wonder? In conclusion I think this public house does have potential to provide top service, but I'm unconvinced it's there quite yet.

We decided to try here for Sunday lunch, nice and safe! Starters were presented with an artistic flair, freshly made using seasonal ingredients. Mains :- Choice of Two roast meats, a fish and a vegetarian. The beef as a standard was served pink, with an option for medium or well done, this extra cooking did not detract from the flavour the plates were accompanied by a good portion of vegetables for the table to share. Deserts:- Made that morning! The staff were attentive and friendly but not pushy, a shame it is not our local! We will return sometime to eat here in the evening as we are interested the unusual and varied menu. A poster was advertising a themed food night, apparently they are sell outs. It is a new venture and we hope it does well, turning out food like that it should.

In the days when lovely old pubs are either turned into " sports bars" or just boarded up it is always a joy to find a "proper" pub. This one however has been saved and had a breath of modern England passed to it by the locals who saved it with a kiss of life .This place just ticks all the boxes. The food on the two nights of my visit was firstly delicious and secondly extremely well priced.A fine selection of beers always help a good meal on its way or if your more of a wine buff I am sure your pallet will be as well charmed as mine has been. There is a lovely outside seating area for the nice days and a roaring log fire for the colder days. Whilst I ate in the bar, I could have gone into the recently refurbished restaurant in the other side of the pub.All of which has got a high standard finish but without losing the feel of a proper pub.The staff behind the bar were all really nice too, very attentive and a sense of real pride in keeping the customer happy. It was also lovely to see a pub where famillies seemed happy to bring children and others seemed welcome to bring their dogs in to the outside seated area . All these things gave the pub a great feel - as they say its all Beer & Skittles!! There's not many traditional pubs like this left - a real gem!!

My partner and i dine at The Jolly Brewers on a regular basis and you will be pushed to find a better eaterie in the Cambridge area. The menu consists of classic pub grub, A La Carte and the Chef's Signature Dishes. In the bar and dining area you will also find a Special's Board which always has mouth watering food to tempt you. On our recent visit i tried the Moules Provencal followed by pan griddled swordfish with a broth of chorizo and ratatouille, my good lady opted for the beetroot crusted goat's cheese with a main course of slow roasted lamb shoulder with a roast garlic, madeira and thyme sauce, all our food was well presented, full of flavour and reasonably priced. if you are in or around the Milton area of Cambridge i would recommend you call in at this wonderful place, you will not be disappointerd.

Reluctant to write a review as we wanted to keep this bistro a secret. The bistro really is good value for money. We go for the Sunday Roast every couple of weeks and it never disappoints. well cooked

Myself & my friends popped into The Crown at Litlington. The moment we walked in the door there was a frosty, Hostile feel, for everyone to turn around and stare. We were then welcomed by the rather g
