We live locally and have been to many restaurants in the area. We were just having a walk and decided to try this restaurant on the spur of the moment. We were greeted straightaway and seated with menus promptly. The waiter was very friendly. We ordered our food which was very well presented and very good. Also the food came up piping hot. We are sorry to say most restaurants we have visited lately seem to serve luke warm food. We will certainly be visiting again.

If you like a good English roast dinner that you do not have to cook yourself, then this is the place to go to eat! The food was excellent and the service was also very good. I would definitely recommend it to everyone especially foreign visitors who would like to sample English cuisine.

Visited "Dawat" in April, 2013. This is an Indian restaurant housed in a very good and centrally located hotel "Strand Palace", a clear advantage indeed. But this restaurant didn't live upto my expectation. I ordered rice and a spicy lamb dish. The food arrived much later than expected although the restaurant was almost empty at that time. The proportion wasn't right. Rice portion was a lot less than the lamb. Its good though for one who wants to taste just the lamb. The taste was just about average and the food was a bit pricey. Wouldn't recommend as I know there is at least one better Indian restaurant in the vicinity which serves better food at lesser price.

Inspired by the recommendations on Tripadvisor we tried the Johnstons at Burleigh street, now changed the name to Dawaat and serving Indian food. Coming there on a Friday evening finding that the restaurant was completely empty execpt for two tables was the start of the dissapointment. Based on the recommendations we thought that the food at least should be excellent. We choose the Theatre menu that the waiter recommended, not so expensive and it looked good. Despite no guests the waiters were not present and we had to wave and give sign everytime we wanted to have attention. The food served was Ok but nothing extra and the bread pudding we had for dessert was more a joke, we were just laughing when trying it - how could something like that be served on a restaurant. Summary: Choose something else

I know that eating good indian food in London is a no brainer. I just happened to stay at the Strand Palace and was too tired to go out looking for any good restaurant. So I was not expecting much from the restaurant when I tried it. And here comes the surprise ! I ate (too much I know) a Pappadam basket to accompany my beer while waiting for Shammi Kebab, Lamb Biryani, one butter Naan and Baghara Baingan. Everything was really good ! I haven't had such a good indian meal since I last was in Kenya, I especially enjoyed the Biryani which was spicy but not overly hot. The Naan was excellent too. If you add coffee on top of this, my bill reached 35 which is ok considering all I had to eat. So, I do recommend this place whether you are visiting the theater nearby or staying at the hotel.

We found the service and quality of the food here to be very good. Our table tried several appetizers and entrees and were pleased with all. The restaurant also offers menu pairings for those attending the theatre nearby. These were very reasonably priced and made ordering very easy. For a bite before the theatre or if you are staying nearby and cannot venture far, this is a great alternative.

The food was of an excellent standard, the service was also excellent and polite. The price was superb for eating in this area of London and I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone, it was a pleasant surprise. They deserve my five stars.

After I had taken my wife shopping in the west-end, we finished up at Covent Garden in need of food, drink, and relaxation. I really wasn't dressed to go to our normal eateries, so we decided to find a new or unused place to refuel. Coming from Covent Garden down Burleigh Street toward The Strand, we noticed a very nice exterior of a restaurant I had never used; we viewed the outside menu which looked adequate. and on entering we were shown to comfortable corner area with very nice furnishings. Our waiter was very attentive, and apologetic for my disappointment of the wine list; never-the-less,we purchased a pitcher of Pimms, and offered a choice of cocktails at half price. It was not until I went to the beautifully clean washroom that I realised Johnstons is part of The Strand Palace Hotel, yet, with its own entrance in Burleigh Street. We started the culinary investigation with a basket of various shared breads, dips and olives, followed by grilled lemon sole with buttered new potatoes and a delicious buttered spinach. The sweets were mouth watering tasty, I chose the Passion Fruit Eton Mess, while Sue picked The Chocolate Brownie. The food was very very good, and we were impressed at the quality. We finished off with coffee for the memsaab, while my English thirst can only be sated by a pot of tea.The damage was about £80.00. which again is very impressive for this part of London. Well done Johnstons, I certainly will be back again, but please get a better stocked wine cellar ie.Chateauneuf, Barolo, Nuit St George, etc.etc.

My wife and I were meeting a pair of old friends who were staying in central London, and this turned out to be an ideal meeting spot. Just around the corner from The Lyceum pub (a hangout from my student days - very affordable beer!), Johnston's is basically a part of The Strand Palace Hotel, but does well in spite of that. When we arrived at 7PM it was all but empty, and the extensive scaffolding outside was a little off-putting, but we had a fine time. Sat in comfy chairs while we had a drink before dinner, then moved over to a dining table when we were ready - no hassling. The menu is limited, but the quality delivered was really rather high - the 3 course set menu was 20 pounds, and other options were comparable. The four of us had a nice dinner plus drinks beforehand and 3 bottles of acceptable wine for 130 pounds - I almost wonder if they undercharged us!

We were in London for a theatre break and picked Johnstons due to its proximity to the Novello Theatre. Boy was I glad I did.Firstly, it is only a few minutes walk from the Novello. Staff are first class, service is prompt and the food is excellent but even more amazing for London the cost is reasonable. The food is very well presented and a good selection of standard dishes as well as more options for the foodies. Portions are more than adequate.Would certainly go back here to eat.

Only just caught sight of an advertising board offering a 2 course for £14 and 3 course for £17 pre-theatre menu and so happy we did. The food is stunning period, but at those prices it is even better! On our first visit we sat opposite a couple who had been going there for 15 years and as soon as our food came it was easy to see why. The service was okay, though not the best I've experienced and the restaurant is very well decorated and comfortable. I do not know why this restaurant was not packed to the rafters?!

Needed a place to eat before going to the Adelphi theatre on the Strand. This restaurant is a simple 2 minute walk away.Having not many reviews to go on we took the plunge and were not disappointed. It was a Monday evening and we had booked a table for 5pm. There were only 3 other people there when we arrived so I don't think Mondays are very busy. Our waiter was welcoming and helpful - in fact he brought the wrong wine and was most apologetic and changed it quickly - we ordered from the "Menu of the Week" both starting with Crispy Fried Goat Cheese drizzled with Honey.... very delicious. Main courses of Medallions of Pork for my husband and for myself as vegetarian - coconut, chilli and lime flavoured vegetable curry with buttered rice and mini poppadoms. Both mains were enjoyable and tasty. We finished with pear and nut crumbles with custard... very filling. We had noted on previous reviews that side orders of vegetables were needed to supplement the small portions. I can honestly say this may not be needed if you go for 3 courses. The tables around us began to fill up as the evening wore on. We never had any trouble getting the waiters attention and it was a very relaxed affair. Will certainly use the restaurant again at any time.

My husband booked this as a surprise whilst visiting London. It was a great location. only a few minutes walk from Convent Garden. The hotel was nicely laid out, not overcrowded. We decided to sit in the window (people watching!) but we also had the choice of sitting in the lounge area which was more informal. We had the 'Convent Garden' tea for 2. This included a selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones with cream and jam and of course tea! The service was excellent, the waitress was very polite and nothing was too much trouble (we changed the filling in one of our sandwiches). The portion was plenty for two and the food was fresh. A real treat for a cold February afternoon.

Dropped in to this brasserie for the pre theatre menu prior to a show at the Lyceum. It represented very good value for money (two courses for £14.00). Service was prompt and courses were good. The jus with my pork was superb and I wanted to lick the plate (although the pork itself was a weeny bit dry...). Dauphinoise potatoes were also excellent. Portions not huge but enough for myself and my daughter and after all this is London and £14.00 for two courses is hardly expensive!

We ate at Johnston's for an early evening pre theatre dinner, choosing from the pre theatre set menu. The choice was good for all 3 courses from the set menu as well as the full menu. The wine list was extensive, covering a range of tastes and prices. Our starters were nice (onion and goats cheese tart for me, and pate for my husband) but the impressive parts of the meal were the mains and desserts. The gnocchi was full of flavour, and my partners lamb was beautiful. We both had treacle tart for dessert which was just right to finish things off. A beautiful meal, very good value for money and lovely staff throughout who didn't rush you despite it being full and turning people away. Would highly recommend.
