Paternoster Chop House in City of London, Westminster

A Friday night visit to this restaurant, which was surprisingly quiet, with friends was to try the steaks on offer. Greedily I ordered the chateaubriand to have on my own, and the steak was cooked well for medium rare. The food did not have the 'wow' factor considering how much it cost, however it is a solid enough restaurant if you fancy an expensive steak.

We were wandering around the area waiting for entry into Old Bailey.which is across from this restaurant. We asked if we could sit at one of the outside tables and have a coffee. The manager, Martin, greeted us and said “by all means.” He stayed to chat and gave us lots of helpful information. He was so accomodating that we decided to stay for lunch. Delicious food. Classy place.

A spacious restaurant, a relaxing informal atmosphere, good food (obviously more meat than fish), and great team mixing smiles with efficiency.

I went to Paternoster Chop House for the first time last week and what an experience. The food (especially the steak) was delicious, the service was great and it had a great ambience. I found the prices pretty comparable to the usual chain steakhouses and it was worth every penny. The steal melted in my mouth and the desserts looked delicious. If you're looking for somewhere to go on a date night or for something special this is somewhere that should be on your list

Celebrated my birthday last night and myself and my partner were really happy. The staff were exceptional on service ( I have just read they do not recieve service charge direct which we are sad about as they deserve it this must change if it is the case) they were very polite attentive and pleasent. Food was decent and a very good size thank you for making my birthday special :)

We came here for my birthday and had complimentary champagne and a dessert! For main we shared a chateaubriand which was delicious! 🥂

I am staying near this restaurant for a few days so I came for lunch yesterday and having a prawn cocktail starter and a cheese board was not a problem even though they were very busy. The food and service were top notch so I came back for dinner tonight and wow! Sirloin steak and mushrooms cooked to perfection. Creamed spinach (no chips as not a fan - I know weirdo ) and excellent wines by the glass. It's rare that I'd come back to a restaurant two days in a row as I like to explore but the friendly service and excellent food ... maybe I'd come tomorrow just to try the puddings if I was staying longer!

Since it has moved locations the prices have skyrocketed and you have no view and a dead atmosphere. Food is ok but portions are tiny and everything is astronomically priced.

I was waited for the tomahawks, WORTH EVERY MINUTE!!! IT WAS OUTSTANDING!

This is the third time I have been here andI have always had very good food. Previously I had the ribeye but this time chose the pork chop and all have been very tasty, well presented and very well cooked. This time we sat outside and, although this is in central London, it is quiet and peaceful. The restaurant is nicely decorated and spacious and the staff are very helpful and friendly. It is quite expensive but I am from Bristol so maybe the prices are around average for central London. Overall a very good restaurant.

Great meats, nice wines, good deserts. Wide choice of alcohol. Good place for a dinner.

I don't like complaining in public so after a disappointing evening here I sent the following email directly to the restaurant. A week later, they can't be bothered to reply so then you are forced to publicly let others know. If you are thinking of having a celebration dinner here, I wouldn't bother. Hello, I booked a table for 5 last night at Paternoster. On your booking website, you ask if this is for a special occasion - it was - our 30th wedding anniversary - and a surprise for my wife that our children were coming. I thought as you had asked and asked if we had any notes about that - that your restaurant might just acknowledge it was a special occasion - but nothing - nothing at all. It just felt like a normal dinner night around our dinner table - except it cost £200. If you’re not going to do anything then don't ask the question - unless it is purely for your own marketing information - then let the customer booking know that so they can opt-out. It was meant to be a big surprise anniversary celebration... Chris W.

Very limited vegetarian options and quite pricey. A beautiful view and very good service

Thursday night and the place was very quiet only 5 tables had people on them. Had the chateaubriand which I shared with a colleague, was ok quality, not great. No way it was 600g, left hungry despite dropping over 100 per head. Sides were below average, roasted garlic was raw, fat chips were good. Peppercorn sauce was watery and tasteless.... had to grind pepper into it to make it taste of pepper. Didn't want to complain, the service was very good.

Had a delicious pork chop. Lovely staff. Efficient service.

Good food, not so welcoming and cold service (there’s reason for it and we found out later), expensive and overpriced comparing to other better standard restaurants in London. First time here and will be the last. Sad to hear that the staff don’t get to receive the compulsory 10% service charge they imposed. Give the tip straight to the staff not the restaurant!!

My wife and I went here for a celebratory dinner, and it was easily the best dinner I've ever had. The steak was cooked exactly as asked, the sides were flavorful, and the drinks were equally as good. Our waiter Tanyck was very attentive, polite, personable, and even rearranged the table to suit our needs in a fashionable way. Highly recommend.

Fri evening was quite quiet, it did get a bit busier as the evening went on, but this made it a great place to catch up with an old friend. We ordered from the set menu, I had the Chicken Pie and the Eton mess. Let me tell you, that chicken pie was delicious, we chomped on that quick time!! the portion size was just right, so there was enough room (just) to fit dessert in. I don't usually have Eton Mess as I don't like meringue, but I wanted something summery and this actually turned out to be a good choice. Thankfully there was only a few small pieces of meringue, and something suspiciously like angel delight, regardless it was nice. Staff were friendly and accommodating, and gave us time and space to enjoy our evening.

Well what can I say very disappointed, been to this restaurant before when actually they were still filming here so I thought I would go again with my daughter as we went to London for the weekend. It was such a let down doesn’t look like anything like it did before. Food was ok but definitely not worth the money was very expensive for what you got

As with probably many, we booked this on the back of being a 1st dates restaurant. We’d passed the venue a couple of times prior to our reservation. The venue was dead. When we arrived we were just one of 2 tables there. The food choice was limited, and for what it was, was very pricey. The venue looked tired in decor and air con we were sat near was clattering. The food was cooked ok, not much to it really, nothing that stood out to what i could get at an average half decent pub, but at fraction of price. The bill included 12.5% service charge which I don’t consider very British. I always tip around 10%, but to have this forced onto the bill I feel is insulting. I can’t say I was overly impressed and wouldn’t visit again in a hurry. I suppose to pay for table water, sides to go with mains is also considered Standard, but when it makes a small chicken and chips priced at £32 and bottle of water for £4.90 it’s not attracting repeat custom.

The quality of the food is excellent. The restaurant was not busy and the staff were friendly. However the service was poor - we had to chase the drinks and our mains were served without the side orders - which, again, we had to ask for.

Stopped in for an early dinner with my family. They had three tables seated, and said they wouldn’t be able to seat us because they were fully booked. I pulled up open table on my phone, and there were loads of reservations available, so I said okay, I’ll just book it on open table. The host got a manager and they were magically able to squeeze us in, but said we could only have the table for an hour due to their many reservations. We stayed, and the waiter was incredibly rude throughout our entire dinner. I ordered the steak and asked for it to be cooked medium and he told me no. They only cook it medium rare. I said I would order something else, and he said he would ask the chef to cook it to medium, but no promises. The food took forever to arrive, and then was mediocre at best. Soggy bread on the burger, cold chips, etc. We finally got our bill and paid, and couldn’t help but notice the restaurant still only had 4 tables seated. So much for being fully booked. I did mention my dissatisfaction/how rude the waiter was to the manager as we left, and he seemed unbothered/uninterested.

Second time I have been. Service was good - nice friendly team. My lamb chop was more or less inedible. Wish I had ordered something else.

The food was nice. Some steaks were overcooked but they were fast and polite in making other ones. They made sure we left happy.

Paternoster has a blend of chops and regional food. The staff is friendly and the food is good. It does have nice outside and inside dinning. Date saying but not exceptional.

Wow! What a great restaurant. If you want nice and tasty food in London, this is a must! The atmosphere is chic as one would expect from a restaurant of this class. When I was there it was quiet, I was also told that this day is the quietest (Friday evening) The food and drinks were beautifully served and tasted delicious! You could taste that this was of top quality. The service was very friendly, attentive and fast. Top!

Had an early dinner hear on a voucher to see if it was worth all the hype, it isn't! Welcome was lovely nice chatty guy who saw us to our table, waiter arrived to take our drinks order which arrive in good time and then proceeded to take our food order. When the food turned up neither steak was cooked as we asked I would have said it was someone else's order but there was only three couple in this early and the others were only just ordering. The poor waitress was a bit flustered but took the orders again and next time they turned up fine. The quality was below what I had expected and not as good as other steak houses we have been to. Would not recommend the Paternoster Chop house and feel it is living on its past reputation which will run out soon.

The food is very good. Service and arrival of food a bit confused let's say. Three of us, two starters arrived and we asked about the 3rd, and is it ready and it duly arrived 5 minutes after the others. Same with Dinner, 2 of us received ours and then had to ask about the 3rd, then it had be cooked[battered haddock]. So it arrived as we were held way through our mains. There were maybe 5 other tables booked so not a really busy Tuesday evening.

Service very slow, food was pretty good, prices - I guess for the City - ok - however £9.80 for water is an absolute rip off.

Slightly less serious steakhouse than Hawksmoor, but still great. We had two chateaubriand between 4 of us, and it was really good. The fatted bone marrow gravy was fantastic.

We travelled to London and one of the highlights was to be 'in the first dates'restaurant.there were 3 tables being used,the restaurant was empty.there was no atmosphere or music.was not expecting this fir a Saturday night! The service was good to be honest.we ordered the 1kilo sharing steak..it arrived quickly but seemed very small! My wife could have eaten it all easily..I really believe it was not 1kilo in weight ! My wife has a beer and a house glass of red.1 has 1 beer..we were charged £200 !! What an absolute disappointment.. ...if you have an opportunity to go there.... please, do not waste your money!

Beautiful spot, loved the atmosphere. The food was fast and well presented, the staff was very attentive. All around great experience!

This was my first time going and the restaurant was chosen as it had good reviews and good vegetarian options for one of our guests. It was extremely busy and the noise levels were so high it was difficult to hear and have a conversation without shouting. I even moved seats to see if that worked. The acoustics aren’t great when full so it’s more like a bar noise level wise than a restaurant. The food was good with wide choice but the above issue unfortunately spoilt our experience. They also forgot a side order but other than that the service was good and the staff pleasant. Just worth bearing in mind possibly mid week lunchtime (peak) so unless you want noisy and not conversation perhaps choose elsewhere. It was a Wednesday by the way.

All of our food was excellent, the steak and lamb chop in particular were both delicious. Staff were very helpful. The Apple dessert was outstanding. We look forward to returning for a special occasion or date night sometime soon.

Great spot for lunch, service was great, Waiter recommended the cheeseburger and chicken burger, both were extremely tasty. Nice selection of wine too. Would recommend and will be back.

Food was fantastic - really enjoyable. However the service was pretty shocking - it took 20mins to even place our order, we had to ask for water for the table 3 times. It was so hard to attract the attention of the waiting staff I eventually had to raise my hand and had to do this several times. The staff seemed disinterested. We got a lack luster apology for the service due to it being busy. However the service charge was still put straight onto the bill. So despite the food being great the service ruined the experience.

So over priced for very average food. Steak was over cooked and barely warm for £130 for 2. That's hawksmoor prices for no where near the quality. Gone down hill since it moved

Very nice food, and attentive service. My only criticism would be the serving of food on planks rather than plates.

The food was good considering the more affordable price compared to others in the region. I ordered a steak sandwich for about £20 but the meat was hard to eat. Service and atmosphere were fine, though, with no St Paul view! Beware, they had such a view in their previous shop, not after moving into this one.

Cancelled our reservation 1 hour before we were meant to be dining. Didn’t realise until after we showed up to the restaurant, and saw that it was closing shortly after we were meant to be seated. Very poor and we left immediately. Also must’ve moved location since filming first dates, looks nothing like the show.

I booked a table for 5.30pm on a Tuesday and whilst it was quiet when we arrived, it was pretty much full when we left around 6.45pm so always a good idea to book ahead if you are looking to eat early. I started off with the tomato salad which was very flavoursome and followed this with the 'catch of the day', lemon sole in a caper and butter sauce accompanied by a side dish of stem broccoli with garlic and peppers, a perfect combination. The fish was cooked to perfection. My friend opted for a prawn cocktail to start with which was garnished with three very succulent king prawns and she followed this with the coronation chicken pie which was delicious. The staff were all very friendly and attentive and I can recommend this place without reservation. Thank you everyone.

Nice restaurant space with lots of space between tables. So could talk. Service was good. Food was dreadful. Tasteless snacks, bread tasted old, Steak sandwich was rubbish. The meat was over cooked and cold , the roll was dry and hard. The prawn cocktail was terrible. The prawns were not cleaned and portion was small. Chips were cooked and seasoned well. Although the service staff said he would tell the chef which is great but maybe he should have asked us would we like a replacement steak sandwich or something else. But I will still say the service staff were good.

Paternoster Chop House used to be a really great experience. It was located at Paternoster Square just by St. Paul’s and was vibrant and truly wonderful. Well… no more! They’ve relocated around the corner to 35 Old Bailey and to say it’s all gone wrong is an understatement! It’s a Saturday night and we’re one of two couples in the restaurant, there’s zero ambience, the food is still expensive - but wholly unjustifiably. Give this one a miss - don’t make the mistake we made and be fooled into thinking it’s the same as it was - it most definitely is not!

Celebrated my daughters birthday. The food was fantastic and would highly recommend the fillet steak. The service was good and all in all we gad a great time

Not the First Dates restaurant I was expecting as I believe it had moved but food & service was good, a little overpriced I felt for what we got bit all in all was a nice evening.

Disappointing, service was very slow despite restaurant nearly empty. Food very average for cost and then noted on bill the excessive service charge. We sat for 20 mins with no drinks when first arrived, drinks took a further 10 mins. Food arrived very quickly, we ate and left as service so poor and restaurant had zero ambiance. The chef was sitting out on one of the tables on his phone half the time we were there. Our booking was 730 on a Saturday night, thought it would be a great venue for our anniversary but was so dissatisfied.

I went to Paternoster Chophouse for coffee to host a meeting and the staff created an exceptional experience for me. They are all very well trained and kind people, everyone I spoke to was incredibly hospitable and went above and beyond. They flexed their opening hours to accommodate me as well. It highlights the importance of service and how the overall experience makes you feel. A particular shoutout to Martin who made sure I was happy and had everything I need. It was a great hospitality experience and I will be back. The food looked epic as well!

Great steak but expensive considering no sides are included. A few things were off of the menu on the night so very few alternatives to chips for sides. Overall nice restaurant and good food.

A tick on my bucket list was to eat at the restaurant and took my cousin too.We were allowed in early and had the choice of table.Everything,wine,all courses were first class and service second to none.Thankyou and see you again.

the meat a fillet stake and lamb chops were fine but the mash was slop and the chips were frozen ones with a bit of seasoning on them. The starter of prawn cocktail was shocking 4 prawns with a bit of lettuce with very little sauce in and at £16 a disgrace.

Certainy recomend. It's a larger, vibrant restaurant where the greating was prompt and real. Overall the service was super attentive with spot-on recomendations which were not necessarily at the highe end of the price range, the Malbec was excellent and the steaks were cooked as orderd and as tender as expected. All courses were spaced out well, not rushed or too a wait. Sides served cleanly, with quality bread and butter an appetiser. Recommend.

Service was the main issue. Barely half full, to be expected on a Monday in January but the staff had to be asked to clear the table. One of us then waited 5 minutes for sugar with their coffee - after asking twice. All a bit odd.

I would honestly recommend just avoiding this place. We booked our table 2 weeks in advance and were told at the door we would have to order fast as the kitchen was closing, we were on time. We were asked about allergies which one of my party had, and they told her with a straight face all that they had for her was ‘broccoli, spinach or green lettuce’ I honestly thought they were joking but they weren’t. It was too late to find somewhere else so my friend was unable to eat anything other than what you would essentially feed to a rabbit. We were told a side came with the main we ordered but when we were given the bill were charged extra for these, when questioned staff just shrugged. Service was slow and there was only 3 tables in the restaurant. Staff were rude and unfriendly, food was mediocre at best. Asked for a espresso at the end of the meal to be told they were no longer serving drinks? No longer serving drinks?! The only time in my life I have ever asked a waiter to remove the service charge! Clearly living off the hype of First Dates but not delivering on any part of it.

I thought the food was great. The Lamb chop that I had was nothing short of amazing (faultless).

We really enjoyed our meal here. Couldn’t fault it. The only issue was we quoted “January moments of triumph” to claim our free bottle of champagne and they had run out so the changed it for Prosecco and then I asked for an item on starters list and they didn’t have it so had to chose something from the small plates list. Unbelievably delicious, had the Steak, the Burger and recently the Liver. Starters are also amazing, the Pork Belly Sausage roll!!! Yum!

The overall cost was comparable with other restaurants in London .My wife chose the fixed 3 course menu which was very reasonable . Overall a good choice of venue for our overnight stay in town.

Restaurant booked for 6.30pm which is early but not for the City. Only 2 other tables there and when they left we were the only guests for the next hour until 1 group of 6 came in. It was dead. Still v slow and not accurate service. Waiter didn't know which steak was which and gave to wrong people, waiter had to ask the kitchen what the fish of the day was (there wasn't one), some steaks had sauces not ordered, cutlery dropped on floor as clearing table, not keeping glasses topped up, bread arriving after we'd eaten starters, having to ask where chips were and then arriving after half the steaks had been eaten, crumble puddings with custard semi warm, hot drinks machine broken and given a long description about why (unnecessary and v boring for guests). All of these may be fine in some restaurants but not one where the steaks are £41 each and the bill was £700 for 5 people. Had to ask for free bottle of champagne that was an offer they promoted and clearly stated in my booking.

Nice service , very easygoing , staff very friendly

I really like this place, it is good for business meeting as not too loud and the service is excellent. The Coronation pie is amazing as well.

We came to London for New Year and to celebrate our Anniversary and choose this restaurant and they did not let us down the food was excellent and our waiter was fantastic we will be back next time we are in London

Left feeling a little disappointed. Food was good but the service was indifferent. Prices are high and a ‘discretionary’ service charge on top for unremarkable service was too much!
