I work with a small group of adults with learning disabilities, who meet once a fortnight for lunch. We practise our social skills, using money and making choices using menus. I phoned the cafe ahead of our visit to let the staff know that we would be coming, and that some of the group members can find it difficult to try new foods. The member of staff I spoke to on the phone was brilliant and assured me it would be no trouble to make some food off the breakfast menu that I knew the service users would enjoy if we weren't able to find lunch options they liked. When we arrived at the cafe, we had a wonderful young waitress who was very welcoming and remained patient and kind when it took some of the group members a little extra time to make their decision and ask for their order. We had a little mix up when choosing cakes which the waitress smoothed over for us and which led to a great learning moment for the group members about making sure to communicate things clearly. All in all, we felt incredibly comfortable and welcomed by all the staff, and the group were excited to have tried somewhere new that turned out to be so much fun for them. Sometimes we can feel judged in public as some group members are loud or are still learning social skills and communication skills, but we all felt incredibly accepted at Johnstones and it made our lunch out feel really special. As well as the fantastic staff, the food was very tasty, well priced and well presented. I had the bacon and brie croissant followed by a chocolate brownie and both were delicious. Thank you all for making it such a lovely trip out!

Food was cold, and expensive. I asked for chips instead of garlic bread with the macaroni cheese...so they took off the garlic bread and charged extra for the chips that arrived cold. I went for a birthday treat with my mother, and sister and it was hugely disappointing and grossly overpriced. I may go for coffee, but I will not be ordering food from there again.

Terrible service. 2 people ordered coffees, one with a scone, one with hot toastie. Waitress brought cold toastie and nothing else. Finally got their attention and they took back the cold toastie and eventually brough the whole order all together after long wait. Hot toastie still cold. Very rude man at cash register where we waited for him for over 5 minutes. We could have left without paying but we're not barbarians. Used to be a lovely cafe. Newly renovated and too large and understaffed. Forget it.

Meal itself was OK, service was slow but friendly. Forty pounds for 3 light lunches certainly wasn't cheap for what we got. . What I really disagree with is being charged 50p for "extra portion of milk"....Really? so one tiny jug of milk was meant to be enough for 3 people? No, it would have been enough for 1 person, 2 if you were extremely frugal with it but definitely not enough for 3 hot drinks. And to add insult to injury there were 15 people in the queue to pay for their meals. Not impressed at all Johnstones - this is how you treat tourists? I was embarrassed to be local today when I went with friends: hope your proud of the image they have been left with. Won't be going back

Last Tuesday, I had lunch here with three elderly lady friends. It turned out that I was the only one who was happy with her choice of lunch (hot smoked salmon salad, really nice). The lady choosing the Caesar salad had trouble with the roquette lettuce, which literally sticks in her throat, and was disappointed with the amount of dressing she had been given and which was mostly on the edge of her plate. The other two ladies had spaghetti and found it was cooling down fast, due to being served on cold plates. Also, they had not been given spoons, so that they found it hard to eat. We summoned a waitress, who promptly produced two spoons and more dressing. The service was good, but the ladies could not help being disappointed with the food. Also, the bareness of the lunchroom made other people's voices appear very loud, so it was hard to understand each other. Curtains or woolen wall hangings (not such an outrageously foreign idea for a wool mill) would produce better acoustics.Lastly, what is s hard about printing out the bill and bringing it to one's table rather than expect your guests to come and pay at the till?

We visited this cafe for a light lunch a few days ago. Although it was only midday they had already sold out of cheese scones so I opted for a cheese and pickle sandwich which was served with crisps and salad. The sandwiches were lovely and freshly made but had a tad too much pickle - how nice it would be if they would serve it in a little pot so you could add exactly the amount you wanted. The crisps were nice and fresh also. The salad, however, had been kicking around for a while as there were a few slimy leaves in the mix. Not nice. My husband ordered vegetable chilli in a jacket spud which came with sour cream and a salad. Or rather, it came with just the salad. He ploughed on with it, expecting the sour cream to arrive any minute. It didn't. Eventually, he had to seek out a waitress to ask where the sour cream was. No explanation was given just 'I'll get some sent out.' No apology either. 5 minutes later a waitress told us the kitchen had run out of sour cream, was there anything else he wanted instead? He grudgingly opted for mayonnaise. Out she trots with it, sans spoon, sans apology. A/ why didn't the waitress mention at the time, there was no sour cream, b/ why didn't even one (of the 3 waitresses involved) apologise, and c/ why was my husband treated like little more than a nuisance for having the temerity to go in search of someone to ask about the missing sour cream? To add insult to injury, the vegetable chilli was pretty poor. Just as well there was only a small amount of it, then. Not impressed with Johnstones this time around. Perhaps a short refresher course on how to serve people, for some of the members of staff...?

It looks great... lovely room and terrace and a case filled with pastries and cakes, attached to a posh cashmere emporium. Had intended to have an afternoon pick me up here - coffees with some sweets on the side. Caffe lattes were fine, but the cake I ordered was inedible... days old, completely dried out. Had no business being for sale. Husband ordered a chocolate covered krispie treat which looked good in the case, but up close was dried out, old and crumbly. Items were removed from bill without much discussion -- but very disappointing for such a lovely-seeming spot.

They have a decent menu with some gluten-free options (albeit not many, so I just had a salad). My wife enjoyed a good soup and sandwich. I wouldn't say it's dining I'd necessarily come out of my way to find, but if you are already there, it's not a place to avoid, either. There is a nice range of options for breakfast (10-11:45), lunch (12:00-3:00, when we were there), coffee/snacks, etc.The staff were very friendly, helpful with my current food intolerance issue, and happy to recommend other places to see in Hawick. Upon my most recent visit, I was shown to a cramped table that had been squeezed in, where there was definely not enough space for 4 adults. There were other table available, and I requested we move to one of these, to be told they were tables for 6 and they didn't seat groups of 4 at them!?- however 2 minutes after being told this a group of 4 were seated at one of these large tables. Continued to sit at this small table for a total of 10 minutes without any service so we upped and left. Upon exiting the girl serving just stared at us and when I turned round saw her giggling with her colleagues. Very unprofessional. If it is happening regularly- order more on a daily basis!Coffee etc is always good and cake selection is good.Service is sometimes a little slow and disorganised which has been an issue since they first opened.

We had a light lunch in this cafe, which is part of the Johnstons of Elgin heritage centre and shop (if you don't know Johnstons are a knitwear manufacturer specialising in high quality fibres, including cashmere - if you haven't worn cashmere socks you haven't lived!).One of us had baked potato with cheese and salad. We asked for a slight variation from the item listed on the menu and this was done without any hassle. The second of us went for the haggis crepe. The food was freshly prepared and was good - although the haggis/crepe combination was perhaps a little bit drier than expected. We followed up with cake and tea and coffee afterwards - the cakes were good and the drinks fine, if not outstanding.Service was intitially a bit slow, with it taking a few minutes before anyone came to take our order, but picked up after that.Total cost of our lunch for two was just over £21, which we thought was fine.

We had our lunch in this cafe ahead of a tour of the mill and it was fantastic. We ordered a Club sandwich which was filled to the brim with fresh bread, ham, tomatoes and greens. Perfection! And on top of that it was huge and accompanied by crisps and a salad.

Popped in for Tea and Cake. We were quickly shown to a table, but 10 mins later our order had still not been taken ( there were only a handful of customers ). I went up to the counter to be told it was table service and again we waited and waited. When the waitress arrived the order followed quickly. Cake ( 2 Almond Slices ) and 1 Date and Walnut was tasty but very, very dry. Nothing Special and no hurry to return

Visited the woollen outlet shop and decided to have a coffee - changed our minds and had a light lunch instead. Most excellent soup and a Club sandwich both of which were very tasty and very good value of money. Staff were polite, clean and well dressed with what I consider a good attitude towards the customers and there roles. The place was spotlessly clean and although a tad noisy was also comfortable. Good tip the cloakrooms/toilets were immaculate as was the shop attached and if you find yourself in this part of the world then it is well worth a visit.

Having experienced the Elgin cafe we were looking forward to trying out the fare in Hawick. Chose Stir-fry vegetables, egg noodles, with chicken/prawn (one of each). Whilst the meal was quite tasty, too much oil was left after the fry, resulting in a pool of oil in the bottom of the dish. The food was therefore cooked in oil rather than fried in very hot oil.Not many staff smiles.

The cafe is in the same building as the mill shop and is very bright and fresh. Unlike other reviewers, we found the staff very pleasant and the menu perfect for lunch with additional specials on the board. I chose the haggis and wild mushroom crepe as it was the most bizarre thing on the menu! It was very tasty but needed a sauce as it was a bit dry. It was served with very fresh salad and some crisps. My partner had leek and potato soup which was also very good. Overall, a fine lunch and we'd go back if we're ever in Hawick again.

We were taken here as we were back in my birth town of Hawick and I have to say that we were very disappointed with what we had the soup was tasteless had no body it was as thin as dishwater I then had the hot smoked salmon salad again a piece of fish plonked on a huge bed of salad with 2 small tomatoes and more greens on top with a sprinkling of crème friache our other guests only had coffee and cake which was fine.regarding the service we asked for water from a young girl with no response after waiting we were eventually approached by our first waiter and he very kindly brought our jug of water .As Johnstons are renowned world wide for the quality of there products I think they should look at their restaurant food and bring both their staff and food up to the same standard we would be reluctant to return here.

We stopped for a pint after a walk. The beer was good. We didn't eat so no comment.

Best bakers in the Scottish Borders, their apples pies are absolutely delicious. In fact anything you buy is lovely highly recommended.

With its dark wood furnishings, including a very large gantry, and most of the wall space covered in framed rugby strips, photos etc, the public bar in the Black Swan could almost be described as dark and old fashioned. It can also feel cramped at times as everyone tends to shun the other bar (and rightly so - ‘cos it’s horrible). The public bar is a place where you have a decent chance of meeting some wee, unintelligible drunk bloke (or two) in the corner, but it is also a place where it is easy to strike up conversation with locals at the bar. In many ways the Swan is like a pub from the past and is pretty unique in Kelso. Perhaps that’s why we always come in whenever we visit the town. It is an ordinary, no frills, traditional Scottish pub with good service and good lager and good banter. It suits us perfectly well.

Sadly now seem to be closed. Unfortunately the Main Street of Jedburgh offers nothing in the way of dog friendly cafes... the only town in our trip across central Scotland to have that issue.

Had a great afternoon tea. Our dietary needs were catered for and we were offered lots of tea and coffee. There was a lovely selection of savoury and sweet things and it was very good value for money.
