Our return visit following a not so great experience last month, totally different experience this time, staff were welcoming, breakfast was top notch and as always the coffee was fabulous. A special shout out to Melissa who served us with a smile :) definitely be in again soon for another fabulous breakfast!

If you are looking for a good cup of coffee with local charm, then John Watts & Son is a great place to start. Their own filter blend is wonderful and you get great value for your money with a refill. It is not the fanciest minimalistic modern coffee shop, but that is what makes it unique, surrounded by modern coffee chains as it is. Food is also well priced.

Visited on Saturday morning for breakfast and were disappointed only 2 options on the menu as have previously had fab breakfasts here. Decided to go elsewhere but to return later in the day for a lovely cup of El Jaguar, we did return and as the sun was shining decided to have coffee and a scone outside, we were told someone would come out as the table had a lot of dirty plates etc form the previous occupants. Only 2 tables being used inside the cafe and we sat for over 10 minutes waiting whilst the 2 younger members of staff chatted at the counter. I decided to pop inside to be told we needed to order at the counter. I asked for the table to be cleared and we would order, one of the staff members came out to clear away and said she would be back to take our order but again we sat waiting so decided to go elsewhere again. We have been regular visitors to John Watt and love the coffee but the cafe is not what it once was.

Every month I buy my expensive ground coffee from John watt’s. But standards of grinding the coffee has been very variable over the last 6month and now are consistently incorrect. For stove top coffee making the beans need to finely ground otherwise it makes the coffee very weak. They never grind it long enough now, it’s like the friendly team working there, aren’t coffee drinkers themself and don’t understand the art of coffee making. What a shame, as I can buy consistently ground coffee from a supermarket for half the price, John watt’s you need to up your standards or you will lose your business to the supermarkets. Couldn’t find a way to complain on your website.

Previously been to this cafe over the years and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, visited recently and would not recommend. Very nice staff, who were chatty and friendly on arrival but that’s where the compliments end. Table not cleaned after being cleared. Waited over 35 minutes for soup and sandwich. Waste food emptied into a bin within a few feet of eating, which was disgusting and unacceptable, clattering pots, overwhelming smell of cooking oil. Food very basic when it arrived. When asked if everything was ok, we replied no, we explained that the service and wait for food was unacceptable, not to mention the poor hygiene standard. We paid £23 for an unacceptable meal and service. As an apology, we were offered a free drink, totally unacceptable offering for the service we endured. This was politely refused as we have no intention of returning.

We sat outside (due to Covid19 restrictions) this exceptional coffee shop where proper coffee is served. The service and toasted sandwich were very nice. Unfortunately the heavens opened and a member of staff brought us an umbrella! Really kind and appreciated. I would recommend this coffee house as best in Carlisle.

The soup was amazing, I had veg and lentil, dawn had tomato and basil, well seasoned hot and faultless! The sandwiches we're all you could ask for and more! As you would imagine the coffee was to die for!! Covid guidelines were observed to the letter and we felt extremely safe but we'll looked after by the attentive staff!! Bravo all at Watts, we will be back very soon.

Popped in here for Saturday afternoon tea. Very good! Nice atmosphere. Loads of tea choices - although not so many decaf of course. We had to be seated at the back up a few stairs however this is close to the kitchen so is less attractive and can feel a bit busy. Sit in the main hub if you can.

My mother in law and her sister were given a voucher for xmas for afternoon tea for two at Watts. After being seated they were told there was no scenes left, they were given a choice of only one sandwich filling which came in a baguette cut into large pieces, and 2 pieces of traybake. This for 2 of them cost £25. Its disgraceful. The main part of an afternoon tea is a scone with jam and cream, yet they'd ran out of scones. This cafe has definitely gone downhill in the past couple of years. The teapot they were given was far too hot and heavy to lift. All in all a terrible experience and they wont be going back.

Decided to have a snack whilst in Carlisle. So glad John Watt is back open after the refurbishment and COVID-19 closure. I did not use the toilet facilities however I believe they have been updated. I usually love a visit to Watts but after my most recent one I think my next one may be a while. No problems getting a table and the staff on the whole were friendly.I just feel that over £6 for a croissant which arrived with 1 rasher of bacon , mushrooms and cheese and a small pile of salad doesn’t offer great value. The scones and other cakes didn’t look inviting on my visit either.I also have to agree with other recent reviews that the toilets are in serious need of an overhaul as not even hot water available on my visit.Left feeling disappointed and lighter of pocket.

This is a lovely coffee shop which I’ve used on several occasions when visiting Carlisle. I love the old fashioned layout which makes it like stepping back in time but I do think it needs a spruce up as it’s beginning to look somewhat tired. Easy enough to redecorate without losing the charm that along with a superb tea and coffee menu makes it stand out from the crowd. Service can be a bit mixed and needs to be improved with a warmer welcome from some, attention to detail on orders and keep tables cleared. Would love to give higher rating but for the points above. Well worth a visit though and I’ll go back.

It's been a little while since we've been here but always found it welcoming and with good prompt service. However our recent visit was disappointing. The girl took our order for a cafetiere for 2 with milk and we also asked for sugar as the pot on the table was empty. A simple order. The coffee came along with the cups, she pretty much slammed them down on the edge of our table and promptly walked off without saying a word. She didn't bring any milk, we waited 5 mins and had to ask for it. She didn't bring any sugar, we had to get it ourselves from an empty table. There were none of the usual staff - we're wondering if they've left. The 2 waitresses were very young and one in particular had no customer service skills at all. It could've been because it was a sunday but it takes nothing to be pleasant and provide what's been ordered. I did get the impression that as we weren't having food we were treated quite dismissively. Will go again on a different day of the week and hope service is more like it used to be.

Now for the second time I walked out of John Watts coffee shop feeling very disappointed and dispondant about the service. The first time we sat down and waited and waited for menus. No one came so we left. The second time today I was on my own. I was told to take a seat on a dirty small table by the door and someone would clean it. I explained I didn't want to sit by the door and asked if there was any room in the back. She said yes but you are only on your own and I need those tables for other people. They are also to clear and clean. I said don't bother and left. I have been coming to John Watts most of my life and I have to say it has really gone down hill. I am not impressed by the level of service. I felt I couldn't sit where I wished as though I was an inferior customer and my wishes did not matter. For this I shall not be back in this cafe.... Very disappointing indeed!

My partner and I are sitting in John Watt’s right now. We’ve just polished off a full English breakfast - fried egg with crispy edges, sausages browned all over as they should be, a grilled tomato and mushrooms, bacon and beans, a slice of real bread sliced from a real loaf (!) and lashings of delicious tea made from proper tea leaves which tastes 100 times better than my usual teabag at home. And the staff are friendly. Now relaxing with more tea using the free wifi. If you visit Carlisle you should make a point of dropping in here. John Watt’s is a Carlisle institution. When I was a child in the 1960s I remember listening to mum every week ringing John Watt’s with her groceries’ shopping list which was delivered by van.

I went here intially to see what teas they offered for sale, since I am a confirmed tea-aholic. However, once in, we decided to have tea and something to eat. I chose Japanese cherry tea and had teabread with home made jam. The tea blew me away, so much that I ended up buying some to take home. I have tried several cherry teas, but this is by far the best I have ever tasted. And the teabread was delicious, the jam ws exacly as it should be, not too sweet and full of fruit. For great food and service, in a traditional setting, don't miss out, try this coffee house.

I don't know if I just went on a bad day or something, but when I saw the place on the internet and then in the flesh, I thought it was going to be great. My café latte was piping hot and looked like it had come out of an automatic machine. My breakfast was two large slices of toast, topped with uncooked/undercooked spinach and a massive pile of cherry tomatoes, with two overcooked fried eggs on top. It wasn't good so I left most of it. When I went to pay the member of staff seemed surprised and a bit put out but to be fair he did deduct the cost of the largely uneaten breakfast.

This is a proper, traditional coffee shop run by people who import and roast the coffee themselves. Having supported the business for some 40 years whenever in Carlisle sadly standards have slipped dramatically - called in recently at midday but only approx. 70% full and no queue at door and waited (and waited) to get allocated seat, as is requested at the door. An older couple came after me and I invited them to go first but they also waited then walked out. When I was shown to a table and told to wait for a menu to see the next people being brought to another table, given a menu and their order taken while I was still waiting. This haphazard level of "don't care" service has proven typical for months now. I then proceeded to walk out and no-one bothered so I advised two staff including the first waitress who was supposed to be bringing my menu and was serving instead at the front counter and neither offered any form of satisfactory or heartfelt apology - really a listless and almost offhand acknowledgement so "never again"

Stumbled upon this little delight on hols. Why can't this place be nearer my home. There won't ever be quite enough time to try all the amazing blends of teas and coffees they have let alone have a slice of all the yummy cakes!

after being asked to take a seat, I waited 5 minutes to get a menu. then it took another 15 minutes to be served and then they messed up the orders between tables. The meal was just adequate. Not what is ideal when on holiday.

Delicious sandwiches (hot and cold) and some amazing cakes and scones. Staff are friendly and helpful. Amazed at the choice and range of coffee available to drink and/or purchase. 35 varieties available as beans or for cafetieres. They also sell the cafetieres! There are 56 varieties of tea and a huge choice of pots to makes them in! A real quirky place. We loved it.

We were only here for a snack and were lucky enough to sit outside in the sun. Looks a really good menu. Helpful staff. I had an excellent cheese scone. I am a bit of a scone expert and this was one of the best I have ever had. A visit to the toilet is a must!

This is a real, traditional coffee shop, not a hipster hangout. There is a huge range of coffees, done in a range of styles - and they are delicious! Sit and savour - and then be tempted by the gorgeous scones and cakes. And while you're here, make sure you go downstairs to the cellars to see their collection of roasters, weighing machines and coffee paraphenalia. The staff are great fun too.

Often call into this coffee shop if in Carlisle for a quick caffeine boost. It has to be the most authentic oldy worldy cafe I've come accross, the homemade scones are delicious and the coffee smell is heavenly.

A lovely lunch and choice of teas. Good menu, though I had a feeling that the choice on the special's board in previous visits was more unusual and extensive. We had a lovely dish of Englishmuffins served with scrambled eggs and bacon.

Back to this coffee house for my fruit scone. I treat myself to a pot of jam and cream and every mouthful was worth the calories consumed. It was a treat!!

After going to Watts a few weeks ago for an enjoyable lunch I met my friend there today for lunch. After sitting patiently for 15 minutes, despite the fact the shop was far from full, I had to go and ask one of the five people serving to take our order. A young man cleared the table and promised to come back quickly for our order. It took a further 10 minutes for him to take the order. We ordered our drinks and scrambled eggs on toast. The drinks came quite quickly but it took a while for the eggs. At least my friends coffee was good, but I wasn't offered any ice with my coke despite it being a very warm day. The eggs and toast were finally brought to the table but no cutlery or butter. While the eggs were going cold they first brought the cutlery, but we still had to wait for the butter. The scrambled eggs were okay but more resembled chopped up boiled eggs, they were anything but soft. By this time we decided just to make do as we had already been there for over 45 minutes. While the food wasn't great, the main problem was indifferent staff who appeared to spend most of their time standing around and seemed unable to do joined up thinking - why not bring the cutlery and butter before the scrambled eggs? Obviously I won't be rushing back, a pity because I used to enjoy going to Watts, but after today I will go somewhere else.

We sat in the back room near the kitchen for the first time ever. Don't bother, it's not nearly as nice as the rest of the cafe.

Great place for some of the best coffee in town; also a very wide range of teas (we like Oolong China tea... one of the very best). And you can ask to see downstairs where there is old coffee grinding equipment, etc.

Great choice of tea and coffee from a 'proper' coffee shop. The coffee was delicious, far better than on offer in chain coffee shops. Nice cakes as well made it a very enjoyable visit

When you're on a shopping mission in Carlisle and in need of refreshment John Watt & Son comes highly recommended. Lots of different teas and coffees to choose from, and the scones and cake are nice and fresh (portions are generous). Will happily return.

City centre establishment where they have been grinding their own coffee for years. Has an old fashioned atmosphere about it where you can still buy goods from the counter on one side. The smell of coffee being ground lingers along the whole street!

Always my favourite bar in Carlisle. The staff, drinks and decor are second to none. Whether it’s a lovely day enjoying the beer garden or a typical English weather day enjoying being sat by the fire this bar has it all covered. The hospitality is always out of this world and brings that elevated extra touch each time you visit. The attention to detail on the design of each area really makes each space luxurious and different to typical bars, highly recommended a visit for any occasion.

Staff were pleasant enough, but 2 out of the 4 main course meals were unacceptable. One of which was replaced as as totally inedible. The replacement was even worse. The starters, however were very nice.

I just had an absolutely brilliant burger here, and my daughter loved her chicken tenders and milkshake too. Great food, the service was really fast and laid back, matching the comfy casual ambience of the restaurant perfectly, with excellent tunes throughout. A*, 10/10! Ps Google is a bit naff for guiding to the door, and there are currently major works on the path outside, but persevere and you will be rewarded...
