Called in for a coffee and had John Lewis voucher that was expiring at end of April. Used the voucher for a cake and just paid for an Americana, staff were pleasant and quite a few tables were available, It was about half full and tables were being cleared as required. Better visit today.

Stopped for a coffee and festive sandwich (third floor) mid Xmas shopping. The coffee was fine but the festive sandwich was very disappointing. Hard baguette, and the most unappetising turkey, stuffing and cranberry. Moreover the queue was slow because the 4 staff gossiping around the coffee machine displayed zero interest in the customers or making coffee. At over £9 I will not be back.

We return hoping for improvement, but there is none. Despite asking for a really hot coffee because of previous leuk warm experiences, the staff are incapable of providing one. The cakes are also a disappointment. I don't know where they are sourcing them, but they don't deliver. We have given up and will look for somewhere better in the centre, for a nice hot coffee and 'fresh' cake. I think others are also voting with their feet because the restaurant was virtually empty at 16.15. J.L. are obviously not reading these reviews otherwise they would do something. Such a pity!!

My husband and I had lunch in the top floor cafe today. I can only describe it as disgusting! The Christmas menu was on display at the entrance to the cafe and also displayed on a holder on top of the counter, so I was very happy to order my first turkey dinner of the season. BUT they were NOT serving the Christmas menu at all! (There was nothing on the menu to say which date it does start!?) The lady behind the counter said they had turkey pies, so I decided to try them and the woman wrote down my order. This member of staff then looked up and said, "Move along." How very rude!! I told her my husband had still to order.....but there was no apology! The turkey pie tasted absolutely AWFUL! I could not eat this apology for a meal!! Never again will we visit the John Lewis cafe! Your food needs to be vastly improved and a certain member of staff needs a course in customer relations! Very disappointed & very annoyed!

Popped in for a coffee and scone. The coffee was piping hot and tasted good but the fruit scone was small and pretty tasteless. As if £2.50 wasn't extortionate enough for the scone , the small pot of jam was £0.60 on top of that. Very expensive and simply not worth it. Will go elsewhere the next time.

We had an early light lunch here. We had 2 Americano coffees, bottle of Diet Coke, Moroccan chicken soup with bread and a cheese/ham toastie with salad. Staff were very disorganised serving the coffees - no system in place, they forgot about our coffee’s and started making orders that came in after ours. We finally got our coffee made after my wife let the staff know. When we did get our coffee it was weak but not undrinkable. The soup was really good and full of substance and flavour, the toastie and side salad was also tasty.

John Lewis is synonymous with quality and customer service but neither are to be found in The Place to Eat. Ordering was tedious, it took three attempts to get our order for one bacon and one sausage sandwich understood and delivered. While we were waiting we tried to order one pot of tea and one black Americano. That took almost as much effort. Their system is flawed with the cashier getting in the way of the two staff making hot drinks. When we finally got served our sandwich fillings were tepid, the tea pot poured all over the table and there was the EU butter mountain on my pal's sandwich. At 10:30 on a Thursday the restaurant was less than 1/10 full and I reckon the average age was 65+. With so many coffee/food options available within a five minute walk from John Lewis I wouldn't be surprised if the Place to Eat is transformed into extra retail space allowing John Lewis to continue what it does best.

I came here recently looking for lunch and saw they had four hot dishes listed as being regularly available. One of them was chicken & ham pie, which took my fancy, but when I got to the counter someone had written on the menu with a pen "no pies". Instead I went for the lentil dhal which was served with rice and tasted alright. The staff at the till were pleasant. A couple of weeks later I went back again looking for the pie, but again there were no pies. On that occasion I went somewhere else. I'll go back again to see if the pies ever exist.

Decided to go to John Lewis cafe after a trip to the theatre. What a mistake! I have not been to this place for years, was going to call it ‘restaurant’, but it simply does not deserve this term. My wife and I had fish and chips and the grandson, fish fingers and chips. It was terrible, over cooked and cold chips, disgusting fish and the peas tasted of nothing. We had a cup of tea with the meal and while the tee bag was good, they do not even serve a little jug of milk! It’s the plastic tubs. So out of a three person meal it was an entire wast of money and and experience I will be writing about to John Lewis tomorrow. It may be that the ‘place’ is not run by John Lewis, but they are operating under the John Lewis flag. Disgusting experience!!!

I went to the place to eat on the top floor of the Aberdeen store today. I was disappointed with the make over. I have been here many times, and I was sad to see the cream high stools by the windows go. That was some time ago. Now they have got rid of the comfortable bench seating everywhere except two walls. Just uncomfortable chairs everywhere. They have put some high stools in with high glass tables - not a patch on the original set up. The tables are too small.Don't go for the new green painted walls either. And why did they blot out the view over the rooftops? Now for the food. John Lewis has always been an expensive cafe, but at least you had fresh filled bread rolls but now its prepackaged sandwiches. This make over is definitely a make under!

This was the 2nd visit during August and disappointed to note that John Lewis have taken the decision to change the products on offer in the cafe. Scones are now inedible because they are dry, dense and have a strong taste of raising agent. I would even go so far to say they seem stale. Whatever happened to the lovely light freshly baked ones we have enjoyed for many, many years. Shame on you John Lewis. On another visit a couple of weeks later it was similarly poor. I had poorly seasoned, gloopy lentil soup with stale, tasteless bread and my son had a child's lunch bag containing dry, factory manufactured sandwiches and various cookies containing E numbers. There was a small bag of pre-packed apple slices but no yoghurt option. This used to be one of my favourites but will be seeking an alternative in the future.

Having enjoyed the infamous John Lewis homemade scones for about 15 years (yes really!) it was very disappointing to visit recently and learn that these are not baked in house but are bought in now, and you can tell as they were half the size, rock hard and little taste. Coffee is really nice and the restaurant is immaculate but such a pity there is no home baking. Going to have to find somewhere else now! I am sure someone has worked out this will save 0.000?% saving but really what difference will that make?!! If you are going to change something, change it for something better, not worse.

I know coffee. I mean I really do. My 5 espresso machines tell me so, especially the expensive one that cost me my place on the waiting list for an Aston Martin. So you're wondering how on earth did I end up in Benugo? One simple answer: I'm a sucker for a freebie, it was a long shopping day and John Lewis had sent me a cheapo coupon for a coffee at the Benugo espresso bar. I still should have walked, but I was so tired I needed a sit down and gave in. It was mid afternoon, there were 2 servers behind the dirty counter and 2/3 of the tables were covered in dirty dishes. Both servers had long, uncovered hair, neither was in a hurry to serve or clean tables. I should have walked on that basis alone, but then, there was that stupid cheapo coupon to deal with. So I ordered a capuccino which in all honesty takes some doing to get so drastically wrong that you can't even taste any coffee. It came out of a real espresso machine. I guess they must have mixed up the hoses with the dirty dishwater from the sinks because that's exactly what it tasted like, with a little milk on top. I wanted my money back, but then I hadn't really spent any so I couldn't see how that was going to work out. I met my husband right after and he offered to take me for a coffee. For some reason I declined. I like John Lewis but have to ask them what on earth they're playing at partnering with Benugo. Just don't go there.

The store is fabulous to be in, smells lovely and has a warm, welcoming feeling to it. Especially at Christmas. However, the staff are virtually non-existent and the prices are not worth paying. The store is the most well presented department store in Aberdeen however value for money doesn't cut it. The selection of clothes on offer appeal to the countryman of rural England who owns a farm and enjoys a lot of Downton Abbey. I much prefer Next for my home fragrances and TK Maxx/H&M for my clothes. Staff should be more attentive and they should strive to be a little more customer focused rather than putting all their time into being presentation focused.

Somewhat surprised by the negativity in reviews on this. There are three venues for food in Aberdeen JL - the cafe at the Bon accord 1st floor entrance - which is pretty limited to drinks and cakes. Its not great tbh. Then there is the top floor restaurant which is reasonable for hot food. The second floor cafe was taken over by 'Benugo' recently. We had excellent sandwiches and drinks there - its easily better than it used to be.I dont think you can use JL vouchers here but apart from that I really dont know what everyone is moaning about. I'm the first to admit I'm a creature of habit - I have a routine that I pretty much stick to and one of those involved the old Espresso Café in John Lewis. I knew that it was being renovated, but I did not know it was being taken over by a third party. The other restaurant (the place to eat) is bigger, busier and serves a bigger range of food - and tends to be where parents with children go, so my preference was always to go to the Espresso Café for an Americano and occasionally a sandwich at lunchtime. The first thing I noticed was the décor, at first glance it's bright and clean and more open than the previous incarnation. However, as someone else pointed out, it would appear that there is less seating options now, as the high stools for 2 people have gone. This would have been a problem in the past as it was always busy. However, it was pretty quiet in there today (although this was 10:45 on a Sunday, I wouldn't expect it to be quite so quiet).I then noticed that they no longer take John Lewis vouchers, which is a big minus for a café located in John Lewis!!Also, no fresh fruit juices, just a few cans of run of the mill fizzy juice.I wasn't there for anything other than a coffee, but the choice was pretty uninspiring and I did hear one of the few other customers taking a scone back because it was raw in the middle.Coffee was absolutely fin, but you would be in trouble if you were a coffee shop that couldn't make decent coffee! So, not a great first impression then, and probably scored off of my routine places to stop, unless I am only wanting a coffee.

I have been a regular customer at the Expresso Bar with my husband, often popping in for coffee and a scone whilst out shopping. We recently visited for the first time since it hade been 'renovated' to discover that it was actually being run by an company, outside of John Lewis. For starters, we thought it was odd that it was virtually empty, as we usually have to queue for a table. There was a little sign on the counter saying they didn't accept the John Lewis vouchers. However, I had a John Lewis voucher, which actually specified it was ONLY for use in THAT cafe. The girl behind the till initially said she couldn't accept it. I said that was fine ... I would go and find the store manager.... she promptly changed her mind. We had a coffee, a pot of tea, a slice of cake and a toasted calabri club sandwich...and even with the voucher it cost us over £13 We were unable to have our usual scones as they had none. There appeared to be a manager/supervisor (male) who was quite happy to do as little as possible and kept a low profile, letting the junior staff do the hard work. Not the sign of a good, inspirational boss. The place wasn't clean. The first table we went to sit at, the seats were stickly with something that had been spilt on them & not cleaned off. And the floor was covered in food ... not just little crumbs, but bit bits of sandwiches, and hunks of cake. It made my skin bristle.I now understand why it was so empty. From being my 'go to' place, this is now my 'one to avoid'.

I regularly go to the Espresso Bar in Aberdeen's John Lewis but it's recently been renovated and is no longer run by John Lewis but by an independent company. They have taken away the carpet and flooring and replaced it with a wooden floor which makes the whole place very noisy. It wasn't even half full today and the noise was quite distracting we had to speak quite loudly to get ourselves heard which I suppose will add to the noise. The overall feeling is cheap the high tables and stools have been replaced so all the seating is the same and it is fairly bland and "canteeny'. The tea, coffee and scones were good so no complaints about the food but it has lost something. Also now that it's not run by John Lewis you can no longer use your free drink and cake vouchers.

Visited with my wife and parents. At half past one, I wasn't expecting the food to be fresh from the kitchen, but it looked OK from first glance. However I wish I had taken a second one before ordering. My mum and wife chose just to have a portion of chips and tomato sauce and due to my first choice on the menu not being available I chose the sausage and mash. My dad had the fish and chips with peas. To be fair, the fish and chips looked OK and my dad seemed happy enough. My sausages turned out to be Cumberland and tasty enough but a bit dry. The mash was crusty and dry. The gravy seemed oily and tasted of nothing. What really got me was the lassie at the till barking orders for us to move our trays up despite there being no other customers waiting. It was said so sulkily and gruffly that had I been by myself I would've walked out. I am a huge fan of John Lewis's, especially the Aberdeen store. But the restaurant and cafe are disappointing. The cafe on 2nd floor is a dark and dreary cave. The refreshments are acceptable but whenever I've been in there I've never felt comfortable. I've felt as if I shouldn't be in there for coffee, but should be painting deer, boars, mammoths on the walls. The restaurant on the top floor looks light, spacious and well decorated and furnished (I like the high tables and stools along the windows). It's nice enough for a coffee (if you want to avoid the Palaeolithic vibe of the coffee shop); but best avoided if it's a meal you're after. The soups are generally tasteless gloopy nonentities (exception being the occasionally served smoked fish soup), the mains are an unchanging paean to corporate cuisine dreariness (flavourless quiche, dry overcooked battered fish…) served by trying-hard-to-be-cheerful staff. Historically, this catering dates from the 70s-80s era.

The staff here are consistently rude, unwelcoming and unfriendly. When I was in, the service was rushed and the assistant just kept repeating ‘anything else’ with a bored and totally unengaged look on her face. As more people from an event I had just attended came into the cafe she turned to her colleague to say ‘I told you’, seemingly annoyed and completely inconvenienced that patrons were coming to put money in her till. I even heard her giving a customer into trouble for trying to sit at a table. Once again, dreadful service and somewhat mediocre food from a Cognito cafe where the staff seem to think they are doing the customer the favour. I expect the appalling attitude comes from the top.
