Always been good but last night's fishcake and chips were awful. Soggy limps chips and soggy greasy fishcake - all went in the bin. Not sure why so poor when generally always nice.

I was so happy when meeting staffs in this shop, as they were so friendly and nice. The shop is bright and clean. Foods are fresh and yummy, my favorite is the mushy peas. Recommended : )

If you think £12 is good value for 2 portions of chips at least serve up quality to make the price. Dark soggy chips, not nice.

Excellent food with a pleasant service. Our order included Cod, pies, chicken, chips and curry sauces. All cook lovely and decent portions.

Just ordered fish cake and chips for me and my son. Awful, chips were just horrible greasy overcooked baggy excuses for chips, and the fish cakes were not at all nice even my cats walked away from them. Shame as the reviews seemed good, you live and learn.

We took part in the Euros score predictor and got one right. My wife kindly got me this last night. I don't know if the batter mix has changed. But I ate the best fish and chips ever. The batter was so light and tasty. Loved it.

Popped in today for the first time and unfortunately I won't be coming back I ordered 3 cod specials and got haddock tasted absolutely disgusting I ate one chip and it tasted like burnt oil couldnt taste the haddock as it just tasted like it was cooked in over used oil and the mushy peas were absolutely disgusting had a funny taste to them definitely didn't taste like peas I worked in fish &Co on hinkler road for 7 years and 10 months and I've never tasted anything like this I've had a terrible after taste in my mouth since and I've been on the loo countless times oil in a fryer needs to be filtered every day the customer service was terrible felt unwelcome no hello no smile so sad because I've read good reviews definitely need to change the brand of marrow fat peas and clean the pans properly as well as filtering the oil every day

We both had fish and chips last night and can honestly say it was delicious, we both had large chips which was way too much for us, 1 large portion would definitely have been enough for both of us.

Just started going from reviews on here 2 out of the 3 orders have got home found they got the order wrong both times ordered 2 battered sausages firstly only got one and the second time received 2 normal sausages

Myself and misses have eaten from here before and always been great, this past Friday evening the haddock and chips blew our socks off.. Fresh, hot and great portion sizes to go with the amazing batter. Best chippy about for sure. Thankyou

Just had some superb fish and chips! Lovely light and crispy batter on my haddock, lovey crunchy chips that were soft in the middle! Quick service with a smile! Highly recommended!

I wish we live nearer but we do try and get there at least once or twice a week as we visit my mother in Southampton the only time we have fish and chips are wonderful service beautiful food and a very reasonable price down where I live we can’t afford to have fish and chips it’s ridiculous price

I don't understand the reviews of this place, either the botted reviews/accounts are getting better or this place manages to make both really good and really bad food. Today I ordered from them on Uber Eats. The fishcakes were good and the battered sausage was acceptable but the chips were undercooked and cold. Both me and the wife had portions which makes me think that it's not just bad luck but that all of their chips were badly cooked. It's a chippy, making good chips is kinda in the name. I expect more than floppy, cold chips with no crispy chips at all. Not a one star review but more bad than good. Shame really but is what it is.

Neither were large and one didn’t even fill up the box. Both were ordered lightly battered but both were lightly cooked, meaning that the batter was raw and inedible. Really disappointed and spoiled my evening. When I complained the guy told me that was all they had today but if they knew that they didn’t have large fish then they should have pointed it out but not charge for large when I ordered instead of loading it into the bag hoping I wouldn’t notice until it was too late. This is no the first time but I never bothered to complain before. See photo if that’s large what’s regular a fish finger!

Wow this place has really got stingy with their portions. This was a ‘large’ cod. We have been going to J Henry’s for over 20 years but no more after this.

I stumbled across this fish and chip shop about a month ago.. and we had the fish and chip special… honestly say it’s the best I’ve had for a very long time and great value for money with lovely staff…. We been a couple of times since and took my mum on good Friday… once again fabulous.. will continue to pop in from time to time even though we come from Portsmouth.. keep up the good work ♥️

Top tier fish n chips, best one in hedge end area for sure

Just tucking into the cod and chips now, fish is perfectly portioned, flaky and tastes of the sea, lovely and fresh. Batter is really crisp even after driving 10 minutes to get home, everything was cooked to order. Temperature is good and the chips are tasty. Lovely fish and chips dinner Update June 2022, after a fun family day out to the unwrapped event, treated with a fish and chips with a bit of of a Saveloy sausage and curry sauce. Really fresh fish can definitely taste this, lovely batter crisp, not oily at all and flavour is outstanding. Chips were good, Saveloy toasty and lovely curry sauce. Keep up the good work. Update March 2024, came into hedge end village today and decided to go grab lunch at J Henry's fish and chips, they have a lunch time special for £6.50 either a cod or haddock with chips, a decent price and a very decent portion, all cooked fresh to order, chips have a good crunch and fluffy interior, the haddock was perfect, crisp batter, flaky fish and tasted so fresh, best of all it was not greasy at all, got to the bottom of the take away box and no puddles of oil, perfect and consistent quality

Always top customer service was busy tonight but got served quickly. The cod was fine but the batter was under done and the oil not drained probably. The chips were good. Spent £37.50 on four regular chips and three large cod.

On my way home to Windsor I was driving through Hedge End n I felt hungry. Stopped at J Henry's Fish and chips shop... highly recommended absolutely beautiful. Not only the food was delicious, the customer service was first class. The young lady who served me (scarlet) is definitely an asset. I'm now on my way to Windsor again but I would drive back there again as I haven't had fish n chips like since I can't remember 👌😊

Personally don't rate the place. They have a monopoly as they own 6 other local fish and chip shops. Zero competition means mediocre food and extortionate cost! Large chips for £5, daylight robbery. Not even actually that large, they done away with serving in bags and now put in a box to make them look bigger. I don't need to feed the whole family for £4 .... but the owners response actually acknowledges that you have to travel some distance to avoid their extortionate prices. Like I said, they have a monopoly.

Didn't waited long for food but was freshly cooked. The portions are very with plenty of chips and a nice large piece of fish with crispy batter.

I had a take away of Cod, chips and mushy peas. I was not disappointed. I don’t like the skin on my fish so I was very pleased when the skin was removed before cooking. The meal was well cooked and very tasty.

Good portion sizes and good quality food

Used to be good fish and chips but prices seem to have gone up (understandably due to cost of living) but portions sizes gone down. Lunchtime specials (fish and chips) were alright but not many chips but hopefully just a one off.

I usually use this chippy as nice food, unfortunately tonight I ordered 1. Fryer chicken breast asked it to be extra crispy, 2. Battered sausage, small chips. When i got home dished up grandchild sausage and the batter had been over cooked (hard) had to remove it for her to eat, my chicken breast wasn't extra crispy just well done and right in the middle had a pinkies to it of which shouldn't be and then to top it off too much salt put over chops. All young staff tonight needs a adult to supervise. All together it came to just under 11 GBP. Very poor first time ever in nearly 4 years.

Ordered from here tonight for the first time and I gotta say it was the best fish I think I’ve ever had! I was skeptical about how it would be when it arrived, as I used Deliveroo, but the batter was still crispy and nothing needed reheating, so credit to the delivery driver too. I ordered the Large Haddock which I would recommend and some chicken strips (which was just as good). Definitely will be going here again for the Friday fish and chips. 5 stars!

Definitely the best fish and chips I've had in a long while. Fish was fresh and perfectly cooked, flaked away under the fork without being chewy. Batter was crispy and light, not oily at all. Service as good as the fish, well above par. Thanks for a great Friday night meal.

Last around 6 times ive bought cod here its had that uncooked mushy white batter between the batter and the fish. Really not nice.

Absolutely banging fish and chips. Went with my mate Sanjay and bought a cone of chips. We thourghly enjoyed this absolutely gorgeous and astonishing meal. It opened my third eye. Fish was fresh and cooked to perfection. Batter was crispy and beautiful. Would definitely recommend.

This chippy is absolutley amazing, the chips have a mix of soft and crispy which is quite perfect. The chips are not to starchy infact they are quite prefect. The fish has a golden flacky batter that melts in the mouth, the batter is never soggy on any of my visits and the food is always hot and smells great, the sausages are great portion sizes and are not to tough but taste great. One problem is the chips portion sizes have seemed to get smaller especially with the children meals, the shop is very professionally run and is my go to chippy, the prices for the food is very low and is still good quality. I have never bought fish and chips from any other shop and reccomend this to all of my friends many of which live a few miles away. They all say that they would travel 100 miles for this chip shop. If i could choose any chip shop in the world i would choose none other than J henrys fish and chips. I am privileged to have such a godsend of a chippy local to me and would love to praise you all for your tremendous efforts in the fish and chips ecomony and industry

Chips the worst ever consistency ok but absolutely full of grit in every mouthful . Need to find another chippy the last chips i had were old and soggy this was the last post for this one .

Waited 20 minutes before being served then when I got home I realised they forgot to add my 2 curry sauces to my order, not happy as my chips weren't the same without my sauce

Just recieved the chicken box meal from here, I'm not one for complaining, but I'd like to point this out, it doesn't state anywhere on this meal that the chicken is Southern Fried, if it had I wouldn't have bought this, as I do not like it, it was also very greasy, I was disappointed and went hungry, also the sweet chilli dip had a weird taste and was full of mayo...
