It was a genuinely first rate experience. The food was just about right in every way. It tasted fresh, like it does in Japan. It had the same variety of flavours and textures as food in Japan. Service was excellent d price was good value. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I eat a lot of Japanese food. How amazingly lucky to have the chance to eat such fresh and beautiful dishes. The salmon sashimi is fabulous. The place itself is a cafe, very busy and loud. Very popular. We therefore had to wait a bit longer than necessary to order more food and drinks. Nevertheless I would recommend and I am sure i will return.

I recently enjoyed a lunch set featuring 2 Japanese tapas, rice, and a drink in Islington. 🍛 I opted for the vegetarian choices - the seaweed salad and veg dumplings were simply scrumptious! 🥗🥟 The adorable round stacked bento box was almost too cute to eat! 😊 I found my cozy corner by the window, soaking in the serene ambiance while savoring every bite. @cafebarnecco is truly a hidden gem in London, and I can't wait to visit again. 🏙️💎 Follow me on IG @ccgyozalover for more delicious food 😋😋😋

A little gem in Exmouth Market. Excellent food served by the friendliest staff I have come across for a long time. Even the chefs came out to bring dishes and asked with obvious pride whether the food was good. It certainly was! I could probably recommend everything but in particular mention must go to the Miso Aubergine.

Really good Japanese in the middle of Exmouth market - I stopped by with a friend and they immediately found a seat for us despite us not booking in advance. We ordered both sushi and hot dishes and everything was good and fresh. They have an interesting selection of Japanese drinks with a very inviting formula price (three drinks to the cost of two if you order the same type of drink). Recommend and will go back.

It's been a long time since I last visited a Japanese restaurant and those have invariably been in Japan so after not having been able to visit Japan due to the pandemic it was with some excitement that I visited Necco, selected because of its convenient location to a trip to Farringdon. And I wasn't disappointed. The service was very friendly and efficient, the locale and the atmosphere first class, and the food mouth wateringly delicious - or 'oishii' as they say in Japan. The prices are reasonable and deciding to treat myself I ordered the Kaisen Chirashi, a hybrid made up of Kaisen-don rice bowl style and Edomae chirashi sushi. The scallops were to die for, the rest of the dish excellent, while my companion went for brown rice and chicken karage which I sampled - yum! yum! yum! I will definitely be revisiting Necco when I am next in the neighborhood.

People who are not feeling hungry will be pleased to learn that this cafe, on the bustling Exmouth Market, will not heap up your plate. Instead you will be treated to a lean cuisine, a 'less is more' foodie philosophy! I was hungry when I arrived and decided to opt for a curry, thinking this would be a reasonable, substantial and filling meal. Not so. A large plate was delivered to my table and upon it floated a congealed lagoon of brown sauce. I think I found one or two prawns and maybe a spliced vegetable. If I had not ordered some rice with this sorry excuse for a revolting curry then I would be heading for something akin to a slimming diet. The portions in this establishment are very small and do not reflect good value for money at all. As if to compensate for this disappointing aspect of the dining experience, the staff are extremely friendly and turn on the charm factor, with big smiles and a studied indifference to the complaints of customers. When I pointed out that the meal was substandard and lacking in any substance, the waitress pretended to be nonplussed, 'Oh, so you are still hungry are you? Would you like to order more food from the menu perhaps?' I am sure they must get a lot of comments about the fly's ration sized portions they serve up here. Reading through some of the feedback posted on Tripadvisor would be enough evidence to confirm this.

The food was basic at best. And totally not worth the money. Sushi looked like it had been made by children. Tempura prawns udon, were actually 2 tempura prawns on a bed of udon noodles.... for £9.50. The sashimi don - warm rice with cold sashimi- gross. An absolute waste of money, not worth it. If you see this on deliveroo swipe on by. We’ve just ordered a McDonald’s to actually eat something tonight.

Necco was so disappointing. I was craving a decent bento but the salmon teriyaki was pathetic. A slither of salmon, ten times as much rice and I didn’t touch the supposed “salad” (a shred of dirty lettuce) and “side dish” (some tiny old pieces of carrot and aubergine) I would have rated the service higher had the waitress not answered “It’s only £6.50” when I asked if the side dish was coming. I’ve had far better value and quality in the same area so am surprised they are still going.

the staff are very friendly - always attentive and with a smilethe food was very good (not the best Japanese food I had otherwise would have given a 5 star rating). The sushi is made at the front but a little more finesse and it would have been perfect and an omelette dish was unexpectedly cold (maybe it's served cold but thought it was supposed to be warm) but the takoyaki was delicious (better than the one in Japan centre)the dessert is matcha heaven. The first time I was very greedy and my friend and I choose a lot of cakes to try out - as a pastry chef she was nitpicking about each but as a sweet tooth and dessert lover I thought they were delicious. The restaurant is very cute and cosy but there is no floorboards or carpet (cobblestone floor) which i guess adds to the charm but can be uncomfortable after a while. The toilet is like going to a friend's house - very cutely decorated and clean (which is something for an unisex toilet)I have already recommended this place to friends and family and will be coming here soon

Cafe Necco is located in the trendy Exmouth Market area of London, and by outward appearances is a simple Japanese cafe, with laminated signs and the appearance of somewhere you would stop for a quick snack. The appearance however is deceptive. The quality of the Sashimi is outstanding (at least by the standards of the U.K.), and the nigiri includes a wide selection of vegetarian options, including the absolutely fabulous Sun-dried tomato nigiri. The price is not cheap compared to the chain 'street' such I places, but the quality is so much better - in fact it stands up well against much more expensive restaurants. I have eaten better sushi, but not in the UK at this price.Highly recommended.

I work in the area and so have ended up in Necco several times over the years and it has always been completely mediocre. It always tastes like anything warm, is fresh from the microwave. The staff makes you feel like in a Japanese cafe right from the start. Some rules are not Japanese though - no free green tea with your meal. We ordered udon and were a bit suprised how the tempura turned out- instead of single pieces in a batter, there was a nest of fried stuff inside our soup bowl. Maybe that's how they eat it outside of Tokyo and other parts of Japan, where we were not long ago.

This has the potential to be a place where you can get a cosy, reasonably priced meal and warm service and potentially just a good pot of green tea. They charge £3-50 for a pot of tea. That´s already expensive but I was so shocked today when my friend joined me for dinner and asked for just a tea but two mugs and they gave her the same sized pot they give you if you order for 1 but as we has two cups charged us £7.00 for sharing a pot of tea for one!! Extortionate considering how little tea you get out of the pot and the size of the cups. I felt the friendly welcome from the staff contradicts a miserly, money grabbing spirit. Such a shame as I hoped this place might become a regular cosy drop in.

I hesitate to use the word "cute" in a review, and yet somehow that is the word that comes to mind when I think of Cafe Necco. Perhaps that is due to the noticeable cat motif (the name of the restaurant is an homage to our feline friends) or it could be due to the bright and bubbly atmosphere that greets you upon arrival. On that count it wouldn't be out of place as a friendly canteen on the streets of Tokyo itself. The food brings a similar authenticity - with Japanese staples accompanied by some more creative small plate options. The pumpkin croquettes are a savoury treat. Personally I like to go for the soba noodles with a couple shrimp tempura. There is a decent selection of sake as well.

This was a great introduction to this type of cuisine. The takoyaki (octopus balls) were lovely, the spicy salmon don was a bit of a shock at first as I was not expecting it to be cold, but was tasty once I had got used to it. The cherry blossom dessert was really nice, as was the plum wine which accompanied my meal. The staff were welcoming and very careful about checking our menu choices (there were 4 of us all with different orders) and the food arrived promptly. There was a nice relaxed atmosphere and I would recommend Necco to anyone looking for a pleasant venue to share a meal with friends. Oh and good value in my opinion (£20 each for three courses, drink and a tip) Well done Necco!

We came here last Saturday for some tea and cakes. Basically we had a matcha craving and were in desperate need of a fix!Necco didn't disappoint. It was a nice enough day, and trekking from the station had us a bit flushed so we opted for iced tea. I had the genmai matcha and my fiancée had the hojicha. Both were excellent and the teapots were deceivingly large, you could probably share one in retrospect, although you probably wouldn't want to after trying !The cakes were very good and had a proper matcha taste, nothing artificial and just the right amount of bitterness perfectly balanced by an offset sweetness without overwhelming. I had the green tea and strawberry sponge cake which was delightfully light and fluffy! I was worried it was going to be overpowered by a strawberry jam taste but it was just right. My fiancée had the green tea cheesecake which was the cake of the day. Very obvious green tea taste, stronger than mine but still very good. Nice crumbly base not soggy at all and not too crunchy either. All in all a good experience. Would go back to try some other menu items, although it would clearly be an excuse for a perfectly brewed cuppa tea!

I discovered this place by coincidence, I was just walking there and the nice decor made me curious. I entered thinking of getting a coffee and some Japanese sweets but I ended up getting a Saturday lunch offer menu too. I didn't much enjoy the miso soup as there was something slightly bitter inside but the rest of the food was delicious, I enjoyed especially the Japanese sweets and cake, they were so good! The staff was friendly and helpful, I will definitely go back there if in the area.

Agreed with some other reviews really nice staff who do make it feel rightly Japanese.Sushi is always fresh, but you have to get there early at lunch to get the good stuff.Annoying £10 minimum card spend But most importantly it's good food!!

Ate a light dinner for two, all excellent and good value with an offbeat but recognisably Japanese menu and atmosphere. Will be there again soon.

Very friendly and polite staff. We had sushimi and a glass of wine just because we could. It was so delicious I could have stayed there all evening. But we had a meal booked at Moro just down the street which is also excellent. This place is well worth a visit though. Can't fault it from our visit.

I was looking for somewhere near the hotel to eat and found this place and saw they had great reviews on here.We showed up on a Friday evening and the place was busy, we originally sat outside but with the dark cloud coming closer we asked to sit inside. This was not a problem at all and the staff were absolutely fantastic and so accommodating. We got the last table inside this tiny wee restaurant. The decor is cute but small. We went for a few different items which included rolls and sashimi. The different rolls were made by the waitresses which I thought was amazing to watch. Anything cooked came from the back where there was a kitchen. The highlight of the evening IMO was the Queen Roll, it was delicious and instead of having normal seaweed around it there was a pink wrapper, very cute. It had cucumber, egg omelet, salmon, salmon roe, eel, lettuce and mayo. If you go please try it as it really is a taste sensation. The bill was very reasonable and including a glass of plum wine, 2 beers and 2 diet cokes only came to £60 which I was surprised about.I wish I lived near this place and I cannot wait to go back.

I had the mini green tea tower which was very nice! All the pastries are made on site by their japanese chef. The cafe is nicely decorated but the music could have been better.. Some odd loud techno wasn't what we were looking for.The girl serving us was however very friendly and made us feel welcome. Also loved the toilet!

A bit like a Japanese greasy spoon minus the grease. Reminded me a bit of the Japanese chain Origin Bento except not as extensive with a good lunch deal of salmon/chicken etc, a side salad, rice and pickles for £6. Dishes are really authentic such as cucumber and wakame seaweed and lotus root. As Keith below said London needs more of these. Owners are very sweet.

I go here regularly with a friend. The service is friendly, the food is fresh and reasonably priced! For me as a vegan there is plenty to eat and its clearly marked on the menu. Its not a high brow sushi restaurant but then for what you pay you wouldn't expect it to be. Its quirky, cheerful and the food nourishing! That's enough for me!

I normally like japanese food, but the quality of sushi was really poor.Preparing sushi is a kind of art ad requires competence ad a long preparation.I think I could experience the result of inadequate training in making sushi. We also tried udon and takoyaki: udon tasted as if made with instant food, and takoyaky were probably frozen and heated in microwaveThe service is another weak point: we were four at the table but received three meals only. The fourth arrived when the other three had almost finished. The place is nice and clean. The price is not so cheap, but considering the quality is really high.

My partner was craving takoyaki so I searched online while we were out on a sunday and found this place online, still open. Honestly, it wasn't anything I've been to before, a really 'kawaii' thing going on which suited me fine. The food wasn't amazing but good enough to satisfy our takoyaki cravings and for us to keep coming back.

It's a quirky hello kitty, modern girly Japanese place out of one of those quirky Japanese films and feels authentic in that sense. The food is fairly standard and a lot worse value (and no better) than somewhere like Tokyo Diner.

Went here with my 2 year old daughter and Japanese friends with their respective children. I had a mixture of different dishes: Sushi, Octopus balls and Salmon Teriyaki with drinks with soft drink. All tasted fresh and nice and were decently portioned although I have tasted better Sushi at Itsu. Staff were friendly and helpful. Place is simple and does not create a fantastic atmosphere, but bare in mind they probably cater mostly for take aways. Will go here again. For all three dishes and drinks for me an my daughter we paid just over GBP 30.00. Good value indeed.

Busy lunchtime visit was quite a disappointment. I've been here for dinner before, which was fine, but our order for lunch was taken chaotically and it was hard to understand what the choices were as we were being hurried through. Ended up with a box of brown rice, a few edamame beans, and some dried-out vegetable dumplings (I'd wanted salmon, but they were sold out) so my hopes for a salad and protein lunch turned into carbs and more carbs. Soy sauce is 20p a sachet, and the food is served in a high-sided box (hard to manage with chopsticks). Perhaps better for dinner than lunch. It's a nice family place and I do feel a bit mean - but I felt like I did in Japan. Confused, barked at, and little understanding of what I was being given.

Necco is a lovely Japanese "tapas bar" owned by a nice and professional Japanese lady. The food is really good and well-presented, the prices are fair. They have a well-stocked fridge so you can buy aloe vera juice, Japanese beer & sake, kimchi, seaweed salad, etc.Their menu has pictures but is quite thick (so many choices!), you can be overwhelmed on your first visit! We love: miso aubergine (really tasty), pumpkin croquettes, yakisoba omelette, vegetable dumplings. You can buy stuff over the counter too, try their Yuzu jam, it is lovely with cheese. We have been to Neccos many times, the owner recognises us in the streets - we even bumped into her at Santore', the pizzeria just across the road. Staff and owner are lovely and transmit their enthusiasm to the place itself, which is cheerfully decorated (cutesy stuff everywhere). It is a really nice, relaxed atmosphere and you can sit outside in the summer. The restaurant is quite small but never packed.

First, I really liked, that all the people working there actually spoke Japanese. Would love this to happen in my parts of the wood (Switzerland). The location is a bit small, but very colourful and nice. It might not be a place to impress a girlfriend though, even though they are kawaii.I was suprised, that they had Kimchi (GBP 2), usually a Korean dish. But it was well made. Then I had a really excellent Spicy Salmon Burger for GBP 4.8, which could have used a tad more salad followed by some not that great Porc Cutlet for GBP5 and the Eel Don for GBP 12.5.I should have left some space for desserts, but there was none. The Spicy Salmon Burger is great, Kimchi good, next time I might go for some curry, the one the neighbours had looked really nice.

Yes, their desserts are second to none! Matcha mousse, matcha roll (MUST TRY!), matcha tiramisu and all! plus they are very reasonably priced considering how exquisite they are. I had lunch here twice. On the first visit, I had their pick-your-own £5 bento box - crispy chicken (main) + salad leaves + rice + sushi tempura (side) + some pickles. The portion was good, and sadly the crispy chicken was not crispy at all but very chewy, but the other mains look good to me. The food is not hot but they do warm them up in a microwave for you. The second time I went I got myself a Eel don (eel + rice + salad leaves + pickles). The eel was yummy! All in all, this is a good place to grab your lunch as they have lots of variety and the portion is generous for the price, and don't forget their dessert!once and the eel don another.

Authentic, cute, informal, friendly and tasty! I have eaten here many times, the staff are very friendly and thoughtful. The food is simple, excellent, great if you like sharing lots of little dishes or equally if you want a main all to yourself. There is a selection of Saki on offer which is great, I can recommend the Tuna Sashimi, the Green Tea Ice Cream, in fact everything is divine. The restaurant is on Exmouth Market which has a really relaxed vibe, lots of people having a drink, eating outside and enjoying the atmosphere. This is my favourite restaurant in London.

All of our group have lived in Japan and we feel well qualified to judge the authenticity. As there are so many places now offering Japanese food and it seems that to get anything decent you have to pay way more here in London than you would in Japan (yet Japan is supposedly the high-cost country?), it came as a welcome surprise to be able to get fairly authentic food at reasonable prices. We had takoyaki, nasu with a sweet sauce, gyoza, katsu kare, kara-age and lots of other dishes we all miss so much. Asahi and Sapporo beer went down a treat too. Can't wait to go back to sample some more (the desserts and cakes looked really good, not to mention the sushi but we didn't have time...)

I love this place. Having been to Japan, this place feels like Japan outside of Japan. The sushi is so fresh and the food is heavenly. And since its such a cute lilttle restaurant with very attentive staff you can eat there solo and not feel lonely. I visit as much as I can and I highly recommend it!

This is my favourite sushi restaurant this side of Nagoya :) Unlike most high-street sushi bars in London, Necco serves fresh, lovingly-made sushi and you can really taste the difference. The staff is great too and the place is absolutely lovely. The real Japanese deal and highly recommended!

I'm a big fan of Necco - not only because I love both Japan and cats ('Necco' is the Japanese word for 'cat')! The food is great and the staff are just lovely - it can be a little slow if you're in a hurry, but that's because they make everything fresh and from scratch. Their rice balls simply cannot be beaten!
