Jamal's Fine Indian Restaurant in Middlesbrough

We visited this restaurant for my husbands birthday, we phoned directly and booked a table with Jamal. When we arrived he was hysterically shouting and telling us that he was too busy! We are used to this, he moans about this every single time!! This time though, there were 3 tables in - all sat in shock as he was shouting and balling at us! We tried to explain that we had a table booked as we were confused but he was swinging his arms around. We walked out embarrassed. I wrote an honest review as we were so disappointed and he responded by calling us rubbish customers and we don’t understand. No we don’t understand, hire more staff, don’t take bookings or close your restaurant. As speaking to paying customers like that is not acceptable!!

Visiting from Nottingham and came with my Dad and friends. We were told everything was cooked fresh and there may be a wait - and it was well worth it. Food was amazing and Jamal was so friendly. Will be coming back next time I am visiting.

Absolutely top notch food. Hubby and I both had Chicken Tikka Pathia with Garlic Chilli Pilau. We shared a Garlic Nan and a portion of Onion Bhaji. Best we've ever had! We can't wait to return and try other dishes!!

Arrived and was advised that wait would be long for food.. sat at table with drinks and waited for 1 hour to order direct from Jamal who also cooks the food. Once food arrived it was excellent and I’m so pleased we persevered because it was one of the best Indian meals I have had. My advice to anyone who has to wait in future.. just do it …you won’t be disappointed

I was recommended Jamals by a customer I was visiting and am really glad I went to dine there. Jamals is unique as Jamal himself serves all his customers and prepares all their meals freshly to order. I went on a quiet Thursday night and have a great meal, super tasty, clearly BIR style curries but had a real delicious depth of flavour. Jamal did mention things are getting harder as people a less willing to wait for their food orders during busy periods. I highly recommend visiting Jamal, but be prepared for a longer wait for food during busy periods, one thing is for sure I don’t think you would be rushed to eat and leave like so many restaurants these days.

I popped my head round the door to hear that Jamal was here on his own. Chief cook and bottle washer, how amazing. Well the wait was well worth it. Fantastic fresh food and an unique story. He has been here for years in an area that is going quiet but refuses to give up. He is battling on. He has seen the arrival of a cinema, Nandos, McDonalds and Pizza Hut but the regulars have drifted away. Next time you stay over in Middlesborough you just got to come! And tell your friends.

The only Indian restaurant you need. My husband and I travelled from Nottingham just to eat here. Jamal is one man, he does everything! So don't expect the in and out typical restaurant experience. Here you watch as one man looks after all the tables, drinks, cooks and serves. And the best part, the food is delicious!!!! We will be back again!

We visited before our trip to the cinema, I had booked via the phone and from when we arrived everything was perfect. Each dish is cooked to order, our starters were fresh and tasty (my parents said their onion Bhajis were the best they had ever had) this was shortly followed by our mains which were equally delicious. The curry was fresh and best tasting I have ever had. The star of the show were the naan breads which were absolutely beautiful and the perfect portion. Lots of reviews state about slow service, however this is not a chain restaurant and every single dish is cooked fresh from scratch so it is certainly well worth the wait. If you choose to eat with extra time allowed if you have plans after your meal then the waiting times aren’t an issue at all, we actually found it was refreshing to be in a restaurant for longer than the typical 45 minutes, there was no rush and we were able to enjoy eachothers company along with enjoying the best Indian meal we have ever eaten!

Very poor meal on Sunday 12 June lamb was hard and the kebab starter was tasteless with no sauce supplied sorry but will not be going again and at the end he asked for a tip needles to say hey didn’t get one.

Chef is super friendly, accommodating and helpful. Food was delicious and service was great too. Definitely recommend.

Miserable night in Middlesbrough as Tottenham got beaten but the meal before the match was spectacular. Been to many Indian restaurants but this is probably one of the best. Jamal is a bit of a character, don’t upset him to much!

The food and staff was good but unfortunately there was no draught beer available but they did serve bottles. I was disappointed because the first two bottles of beer was cold (out of the fridge) but then the bottles after then was not chilled and no one like warm beer.

Popped in here for dinner on my own while in Middlesbrough on business recently. Staff were very friendly and attentive, also as i was unusually indecisive in making my choices. In the end i opted for onion bhajis to start and the Chicken Kalia for my main. I was warned that the Kalia was very hot and spicy, but i ignored the advice and went ahead with a wave of bravado. The onion bhajis were lovely, washed down with a pint or two of Cobra. The Kalia was hot, very lots of lovely spices and ingredients, but a little too hot for me. Oh well, i was warned!

We were a group of six and booked a table in advance. On entering, the guy in the kitchen pointed to a table. The other guy (there were only the two members of staff working) came over to take our drinks order. At this point one of us asked what a Balti was like (was it hot?) to be told to ask the other member of staff when he comes to take the food order. 45 minutes later we still hadn't ordered the food. We called the drinks waiter and asked for the bill for the drinks as we didn't have time to wait. At this point the chef/food order waiter/owner came over and said he'd take our order. We kept explaining we didn't have time as had a train to catch. Owner then went on to argue that he's not taking any more bookings over the telephone and people who go usually take their time to have the meal. This went on for about 5 minutes, until we paid for the drinks and left the restaurant. Others had waited 1 hour 30 minutes for food and others were saying that the food was nice, however if people don't have time to wait, this is way too long and should be informed on arrival. The owner needs to stop cutting corners and employ more staff. Found the whole experience embarrassing and not what we expect as a customer. Ended up going to another restaurant around the corner, with perfect customer service and nice food.

The place is very dated and not particularly clean. Service is friendly but staff are not very well presented. Starters were ok, lamb was overcooked and like chewing leather but flavour was good. Main was very tasty , special fried rice was ok. Naan breads were not very good, dry and lacking flavour. Not the worst place I’ve been to but certainly wouldn’t go back.

We went there in a party of 4, 2 couples.The young guy serving us was pleasant, the guy cooking the meals and running up and down the room seemed a nice guy also. BUT, and there’s a few butsThe main courses came in the metal dishes that side dishes are usually served in other places, so portions were MODEST to say the least. Rice dishes were fine, not a lot of mushrooms in the Mushroom rice.Of the 4 of us, 2 of the dishes were served tepid temperature, certainly not hot. And that’s unforgivable, the main dishes themselves were very disappointing, the Madras was more like a Bhuna (at best). Other people on other tables were asking for extra sauces that were hot (temperature hot) other people around us were making polite complaints, The nan breads were hot and tasty, that’s probably the best comment that I can make. Won’t go again, completely dated, the bloke utterly out of his depth with a party of 4 people.Overall 3 out of 10, Give this pace a miss, plenty of nice places to go.

Visiting family in Middlesbrough ....after reading reviews we decided to to eat at Jamal’s on Tuesday evening....even though most reviews where mentioning the wait.....Hand on heart the wait was worth it.....1st class....Me and my husband have been to a-few Indian Restaurants up and down the country...but Jamal’s was far the best....Looking forward to our next visit...

Went with son and friend after Boro game and one table of 4 ahead of us / so 7 of us in total in the restaurant. We did have to wait but I could totally see why. The owner cooks everything fresh to order and it was exceptional. Naga chilli dish was superb. Between Madras and Vindaloo Will be back.

We had a delicious meal. This place is like a really old feeling Indian restaurant- like back to the 70’s or 80’s, but that was one of the reasons it was good. Who needs Akbar’s? As I said the food was tasty and decent portions.

We popped in at 6.45pm on Saturday to check availability as Jamal cooks everything himself and won't take too many tables at once as quality is his passion. 4 friends from Derbyshire joined us too. We ordered a wide selection of everything from rice to naans, lamb chicken prawn and vegetarian curries. The pickles with popdoms are the best anywhere! Beware the green one unless you have competitive men who like to eat from a spoon.... Could not fault anything at all. As we were having starters a group of 8 gous came in, obviously regulars, and were instructed to wait and have drinks till Jamal was ready. Meanwhile the waiter was instructed to lock the door to prevent further walk ins. Brilliant, don't let anything put you off coming here if you like Indian food. He is the most lovely guy and food is the best in Teesside. The bill was under 150 for 6 people ordering lots of starters and extras plus 2 bottles of wine and 4 pints of cobra.

You will wait a while in here but it is totally worth the wait. Owner cooks all the food and comes out to check exactly how you want the food done. Server guy was fine but the owner/chef does everything hence the wait. However the food is done to perfection.could not fault it. If you want something quick, rushed, average etc try somewhere else. If you want the best Indian meal you will have then this is the place to go

Me and my partner visited Jamals last night, we haven't been in a while. The food was fantastic as usual it never changes its consistently good food. This restaurant should be full all the time as it's by far the best curry around these parts. Maybe if Jamal removed few tables and made it more exclusive he would be able to cope better and not have to turn people away. The food may take a little while but its quality. Thanks jamal.

I have been looking forward to a visit here and was disappointed. Jamal explained to us that he did everything himself, but we were the first in and certainly didn't feel like we had long wait. Food was excellent and we will return, but order a bit less on our next visit. If I had to complain about something, it would the price of the pickles to accompany our poppadoms, there were 3 of us and he charged for two lots of pickle which I felt was unnecessary when we made such a lager order. Certainly won't put us our return visit.

Long day and fancied a curry, read some good reviews on Jamal’s and was only round the corner from hotel so decided to give it a go. On the website, stated it opened at 5 so arrived around 20 past to find it was closed and he was inside hoovering? Managed to get his attention, he eventually put away the hoover and opened up! Gave some speech that if he opened at 5 he wouldn’t get first customer until 7.... why state you open at 5 then!! Food decent, had the Jalfrezi and certainly not anything i would rate head and shoulders above anything else but a decent curry. Will be back and hopefully will be open this time!

This restaurant is in Middlesbrough and is a very famous Indian restaurant in the area. The uniqueness of the place is that it is run by a man called Jamal and he is the one man army of the place. He takes your order, cooks your food and serves you with a smile. His only help in the kitchen is his wife. However since he does everything on his own, be prepared for that long wait, while he patiently cooks the delicacies from you. Jamal is a Bengali and gets his spices from Bengal. Therefore expectantly there is a distinct ‘bongness’ in his creations, which I loved.

As others have commented no answer on the phone. Jamal does cook very well but a shame we won’t be able to try this visit.

A group of us ate here again, this time it was a birthday celebration. As always the food was superb, testament to the skill of chef Jamal. If the place is busy, you may have to wait a little longer, but persevere it’s worth it! The menu is compact with all the usual suspects, but the chefs specialities are worth a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Me and my partner visited Jamals after what seems like a lifetime since my last visit because of my new born and not getting out much. The curries we had were fantastic Jamals food is exceptional. What a lovely start to 2019. We have been eating at Jamal's restaurant for 23 years now, since he opened in 1996. He has never let us down. His food is amazing, all cooked fresh and so delicately spiced. Our meal tonight was simply the best. My tandoori king prawns were perfect and my husband's lamb tikka jalfrezi was delicious. Thank you Jamal and hopefully many years to come.

We were really impressed with this authentic curry house - really good value and very tasty food. Although there were only 2 members of staff on duty, we knew it must be good as everyone was prepared to wait a little longer than normal to be served. It was well worth the extra time!

I visited Jamals whilst on business in Middlesbrough. The owner was serving on his own but explained this when we arrived, so the sergice was slow but we did get the option to leave. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced.

In the area for a training course and travelled from Swansea - so no idea of where to go or what to do !! I booked to see the mighty boro vrs Crystal Palace in the cup - and asked a local guy on the course for some advice - JAMALS JAMALS came ringing back - I have asked for the advice - so took it !! It was game night so a little busy - I was asked if I was going to the game and advised of the time it would take to cook !! Chicken jalfrezi and a keema naan .. washed down with a beer !! Stunning !! The curry was really spicey and not too hot - not too wet - beautiful - and for a comparison I later travelled to Leamington spa and had the same meal - JAMALS was better - and a genuinely nice bloke !! Jamals continues to be the best Indian restaurant on Teesside by far. His personal service and the way everything is cooked fresh every time is brilliant.

Visited here after the cinema. It was a little bit busy but Jamal was very accommodating. We were seated straight away and Jamal explained he cooked everything himself and that they would be a wait for food. We ordered our food and he brought our drinks order straight away. I would say the drinks are a bit pricy a pint of cobra draft 4.95 but I suppose being a 1 man business you have to make a profit somewhere. Our food came around 30 mins later which was delicious very tasty and the Nan was so fresh it was the best I’ve ever had. Overall Jamal is such a lovely man who welcomes you to his restaurant in kind manner tries his best and gives exceptional service highly recommended and would visit again.

We visited Jamal’s last Friday after the cinema - for many years people have said to me “the best place for a curry in Miiddlesbrough is Jamal’s” so my wife, son and I tried it.

I usually come here when I go to the cinema opposite. As usual delicious fresh food full of flavour. Great personal service by the owner who remembers me from last time I visited. Always enjoy coming here.

The one thing you need to realise with Jamal's is that he's a one man band in the kitchen. This isn't like other big chains in town, so don't expect to be in and out quickly, especially with a large group (unless you plan in advance).

I was on business in the area recently. I don't know the area well and I was dining alone after attending a conference and staying over at the nearby Jurys Inn. To be honest, I did consider dining at the hotel restaurant in the first instance but, after checking-out the hotel restaurant menu, I found the food a bit over-priced and generic so I checked out Trip Advisor and found Jamal's. After reading a good few positive reviews I set out on the small 5 minute walk for dinner. The restaurant was easy to locate and quiet. I was welcomed immediately and a table for one as a business diner was very much welcomed - I was instantly happy with my choice.

Best Indian meal in many years! lovely staff welcoming and friendly will definately return. We have eaten at many resteraunts in the town, have to say this is definitely in our top 3 will definately return and recommend to friends and family.

Visited on a Sunday evening whilst staying in town at the local Premier Inn, two minutes walk away. The owner, Jamal, seems to do everything from waiting on tables to cooking the food and was coping very well as there were only about 4 tables occupied. I had chicken tandoori starter and Korai chicken for main course, which were both very good and Jamal even had enough time for a chat as well. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would visit again if I was staying in Middlesbrough.

I Live in Newcastle and honestly I've tried alot of Indians, personally my favourite food and favourite place to eat. I arrived here with my family to celebrate my little brother's birthday and it was probably the best evening me and my family have had in a while. The food was the best I've had, these compared to Akbars and various other franchises. Drinks were amazing and came back when they were getting empty to order more. Birthday cake was also brought and sang to my brother which was a lovely touch.

We travel back to Middlesbrough from Leeds and try to get to Jamals as often as possible. Beautiful curry always and Jamal is always very friendly and accommodating with any requests for food as it is all freshly cooked. Been eating here for 9 years..will continue. Easily recommend the place, you won't be disappointed.

My wife don't go out to often but we decided on a special night out. After reading the reviews for this restaurant we booked it for a Saturday Night. When we arrived at 8 pm the place was almost empty which should have been a sign that things were not so good. We sat down and ordered drinks - the first disappointment as they told us that they couldn't serve Rose Wine by the Glass - why not ? We the ordered our meal and THEN they told us that all bills were to be CASH ONLY. They gave some sob story that their bank account was blocked etc. I paid for the drinks that we had had and left and went to a much better place in the town. My advice - unless you have cash in your pocket stay away.

Me and my partner went to jamals restaurant on Friday. I ordered the garlic chilli chicken and my partner ordered the chicken tikka masala. Sometimes you may have to wait for your food to come but if you want perfection it's worth it. Because I come here often I ring jamal and order the food before I arrive that way it's less pressure on him as he's a perfectionist. Thanks Jamal.

Consistently excellent is probably the best way to describe Jamal's. It's by far the best Indian restaurant in Middlesbrough and possibly much further afield. As always, food is cooked fresh. Jamal can often be seen shopping for ingredients in Sainsbury's near his restaurant which is nice to see. The restaurant has a loyal local following but is also proving popular with guests from the three hotels nearby. It is absolutely fabulous food and is thoroughly recommended.

It is always busy here and deservedly so. The food is delicious, authentic and plentiful. It is a small venue and they do not deliver...more's the pity. I can highly recommend this place to all lovers of indian food.

Stumbled across this restaurant by chance, walked in to be approached by a pleasant young chap who greeted us with "Good evenng Sir, if you would like to take a seat, the Chef will be out shortley to take your order, unfortunately everything is cooked fresh by the chef himself and as soon as he is free he will be out to take your order". Approx 10 minutes later the chef took our order and brought the meal to us 15 minutes later, so in theory just 25 minutes from entering to eating. The food was to die for, cooked to perfection, plentiful and FRESH, couldn't ask for me, excellent. 5 star rating will visit again.

My starter of Tandoori chicken was prepared fresh and very tasty. This was followed by a Prawn Saag which again had been prepared to order. Delicious. Just called in for a meal as was near hotel we are staying at, The best curry ever , awesome, Jamal introduced himself and was extremely welcoming and helpful. The young man on the bar and service was fantastic too. Shame we live near Preston, may have to make a special journey for a curry. Definitely 5 star.

Lovely authentic food all made fresh so takes a bit longer than usual but worth the wait jamel is good at adapting the dishes to suit you.

The food is cooked to order so can be a bit slow, but they tell you that when you are seated and it's not a fast food take away. Only been the once and it was lovely, no faults and we would go again.

Came here with a few friends, service was ok and food was nice! Place is pretty small so doesn't take much for it to be busy. Waiter was just an all around nice guy, reason for not getting 5* as it was a good 50-60 minutes wait for our food.

Only been once before as small and always busy but booked table for 9pm, it was quiet with slow service.My first visit over a year ago was excellent but my second visit was disappointing.Popadoms and pickle tray was nice, starters were ok and brought out whilst we were having poppadoms. We were then asked if we wanted mains, whilst we were having starters. Mains came but nan bread ages after. Meal was ok but nothing special. Balti had quite a bite.

We visited here after watching the football. It was honestly one of the best currys we have ever had. We hope Middlesbrough return to the premiership soon so we can visit again. You will not be disappointed give it a go.

This was our first time at Jamal's, we had head mixed reviews so decided to see for ourselves. When we arrived at around 7pm it looked pretty empty so we didn't know how to feel when we entered the restaurant, however the friendly waiter quickly made us feel welcome and at ease and got us seated swiftly to a neatly set table. Drinks were ordered and served right away and by the time our starters of poppadoms and dips arrived the restaurant seemed to fill up really quickly! We ordered a lamb bhuna and prawn ceylon and both were delicious and served promptly - the waiter was very attentive and keen to help us in anyway without being a nuisance which was nice. Overall great customer service and lovely fresh food, will definitely be returning!

This place is just one of the best hidden gems in Middlesbrough for an Indian meal, lovely fresh cooked authentic Indian cuisine, friendly staff with a traditional atmosphere, highly recommended this is a must for lovers of Indian food
