Great off chance visit, an early evening meal for two… quiet at around 5pm. Chose our own seats, menus extensive and interestingly translated leave some questions and none selections. Service a little slow but good when we placed ordered. We ordered too much four plates and a soup…was enough for three/four. Quality excellent and happy to provide container and bag to take rest home….

Comida normal, servicio horrible. ??

Let's get things straight! The food is good, but the customer service is HORRIBLE!! We've been coming to this place regularly for either eating in or takeaway (think: at least every other week) for the past year or so and the treatment we receive has been progressively getting worse.. until yesterday my partner and I brought a friend along and we had, possibly, the worst customer service experience we've ever had anywhere. We were deciding on what to order and within a couple of minutes of us being seated, our server came to our table and told us to stop talking and place our orders immediately. Then when we decide on what to order she pretty much refused to accept the order in this way and insisted we change dishes - now in this situation, you kind of need some time to look at the menu again, we were not afforded that time. The server watched over us and made us all very uncomfortable and even chose one of the dishes for us because she wanted to hurry us up. She wouldn't let us speak and seemed to even be growing angry with us for not fully understanding what she was saying; we were placing an order and she interjected and made the whole situation unbearably awkward. Others in the restaurant were being treated just fine and we found it very odd that we were singled out for this sort of behaviour. Needless to say, we will NEVER be returning.

While my favourite café is closed for refurbishment I am looking for an alternative for good Chinese food. This place isn’t it. The menu description was simple: braised pork intestine. What I got was a bowl of mostly potatoes, a few shreds of some form of meat and a lot of dry chilli drowning in oil. Lots of oil. Really, oil to a depth of half a centimetre over everything. There was no way I could finish it. In fact, when the (over cooked) rice is the best thing about it then what more can I say?

They have this buffet hotpot for £17.99 which is not cheap but there are not that many choices available to order. Not only that, the portion for each order was only enough for 1 person when there were two of us. We ordered the second time after finishing the first dish which came quite promptly. Then, when we ordered the third time, it didn't come until 20 mins later. For the fourth time we ordered, the waitor was stopped by the woman in charge of the cash register who came over and "reminded" us in an arrogant manner to finish off the remaining 3 or 4 pieces of meat on the plate before re-ordering (I committed the inexcusable error of ordering with food still on the plate in view of the 20 minutes wait in the 3rd order!). Most unbelievably, that woman picked up a spoon and stirred in the hotpot to see if there were any food left hidden in the soup! What sort of attitude is this! We will never ever go to this restaurant again.

If your idea of a "Chinese" meal consists of Chinglish spring rolls, sea weed, crispy duck, sweet & sour, chop suey etc DO NOT come here because you will hate it and leave a poor review. This is a restaurant for Chinese abroad and westerners who have lived in the Far East. And understand something about mainland Chinese food, not just the usual Hong Kong Cantonese stuff. I was here yesterday, unfortunately only with two others so limited in what we could order. The hot & spicy fish with lotus root was outstanding, the Szechuan Dandan Noodles were historic. Excellent pork & beans and pak choi too. Apart from one other couple and us, all other customers were Chinese. Says it all.

Have been coming to Jackys Kitchen for over 7 years now and have really enjoyed the food. It is very authentic and has some unusual dishes. It is not your average Chinese but go in with an open mind and do not be put off by the language barrier and negative reviews. My favorite dishes are dumplings, cold sliced pork in chili sauce, brown stew ribs, sizzling prawns in sweet chili, hot and sour Chinese cabbage and schezewan chicken. On the plus side the portions are big, wide variety of meat and vegetarian dishes and prices are reasonable. On the negative side the staff can come across as rude, there are language issues and it's easy to order the wrong dish due to misunderstandings. We tend to point at the dish we want on the menu and have only ever had one problem. We have always found the fresh and well cooked. Will be back again this month for our regular visit.

Can honestly say, I have never had such over priced, poorly cooked and poor quality of food in my life served by rude staff with an obvious lack of knowledge about the menu.We decided to go for the set meal for 2 which very little of was even edible. the starter of crispy duck, was great. Run of the mill, but great. Yet when the potato dish ( I had asked the waiter for his opinion on the best one to have, his english proved to be too poor to cope with the question) arrived and it was an plate of raw shredded potato slathered in chillis, the problems started to arise. The chicken dish was inedible and was made with cheap cuts of meat that had clearly been reheated several times and had a slimy, rancid texture. The prawns were slimy and cold in the centre, again indicating they were frozen, The basic egg fried rice was nice though! The food was served on plastic (!?!)crockery and when I asked for cutlery instead of chopsticks, he promptly dumped them on the side of my plate.Considering that 3 dishes were inedible, we were obviously unwilling to pay the full price and the argument that ensued was completely appalling. With the waitress claiming that 'thats just what chicken is like' and ridiculing our idea that it was foul. All in all, disgusted and unhappy. Avoid!!

Jacky's Kitchen is tucked away round the corner from The Arcadian, and frequented by mostly Chinese clientele (always a good sign). I've been several times, a couple of which were with Chinese friends. The food is excellent, though there does appear to be two tiers of menu: One aimed at walk-in 'Western' guests (which is very much a run-of-the-mill Chinese menu you'd get in your local take-away), and a full-blown one for 'locals' which seems skewed towards the heartier northern-Chinese-style cuisine. You can probably guess that the more authentic 'secret' menu is the better one! However, some assistance is required to translate some of the less well-known options, which can sometimes be a bit of a chore if your Mandarin isn't up to scratch (and mine certainly isn't).If you know what you want (I usually go there for their all-you-can-eat hot pot option), then Jacky's is fabulous. If you're not familiar with their menu, and haven't been coached by your Chinese friends, then your fare will likely be distinctly average.A place to frequent for those in the know (or for those with friends in the know), the uninitiated Jacky virgin's mileage may vary in both service and food quality.

Having lived in Birmingham almost all my life we have tried a LOT of the restaurants in Chinatown.I am from a Chinese family so our standards are quiet high i believe. So when a friend from London recommended jackys we had to see what the fuss is about. We were not disappointed! If there is a dish you want not on the menu they are happy to cater for this -hong xao aubergines for example. Good portions of everything and perfectly hot. Dan dan noodles, pork chili and coriander and the salt and pepper crispy prawns were enough to keep us going back again and again.Chinese restaurants are notorious for bad service (it isn't nearly as important in oriental culture as it is for westerners) but jackys were helpful, with good English and great compared to some of the nearby places. Haven't tried the hot pot but with dishes so good why restrict yourself?

Had high hopes that this would be better than the usual cantonese-style chinese restaurants (why can you never get decent chinese food in this country???) after the recommendation of a local of chinese descent. We went for a late-ish dinner (8:30) and went for one of the set meals, as recommended in previous reviews. The crispy duck was average, if a little cold. Mains were bland. Biggest problem was the service - difficult to get the attention of the staff, who seemed pretty apathetic anyhow. They even started vacuuming around us towards the end of the meal (~10pm) and were happy to get out of the place. Overpriced for what we received. Would give this place a 'poor' rating but am optimistic that we may have just been unlucky when we went ?!?

Just as we ordered we were very rudely ask to move, which we refused. Finally the pots came to cook the fish, then the fish arrived on a plate. Most off the fish was stiff frozen so at that stage that was enough and we left the place.Very bad

Near quite part of the well known China Town area but only a few steps away. Went in on the off chance and got a table for one and as it was very busy the signs were good. I was the only non Chinese/Asian person in the whole place and again I find that a good sign. Extensive menu with many items I had not seen before. The only problem with going solo is you miss the chance to share many dishes in the communal way however my Green Beans and shredded pork with chilli was very nice. All clearly freshly and properly cooked with one hell of a kick!Worth a look if this is your type of food.

One of the nicest of the cheaper end of Chinese restaurants in the area. The food was very well presented and the staff were friendly.

Expected good things, although unfortunately my co-diner didn't want to the hotpot to share- drat it. So we had:StartersPork yuk shung - masses, good value, not as tasty as Henry Wongs on Paul Sq who serve theirs in delicate little Cos lettuce boats, but pretty good all the sameWonton soup - as nice as anywhereMainsSizzling Beef - came to the table sizzling, regretted my choice of hotpot, until I tasted it and found it was sweet. Why? Didn't bring out more flavour, quite the reverse. Might have been great otherwise.Pork Belly hot pot (from the hotpots for 1 from the middle pages, not the shairng ones at the back of the menu which are probably better). Lovely broth, solids 9/10 veg, 1/10 meat. Of the veg over half was boiled spud- bit unusual for Chinese food and didn't add anything +ve to the taste, cheap filler I suspect, but rice would have been better. Meat 80% fat, 20 meat. Seemed very scarce though.Drinks: Tiger and Tsing Tao £3 a small bottle, TT nice flavour to me tasted like CalringService - friendly without fawning, quickish, considerateClientele - half Chinese, half British.Revisit?Yes, but would ask if the dish tasted sweet or was mainly vegetable (and if so, does it in include spud!) lol. However I think with careful selection, the score could easily rise to 5/5.Atmos - nice

Visited with my family after visiting the Hippodrome theatre. My first impression was that the food must be good as it was very busy and the vast majority of diners were Chinese. On inspection of the menu I was very impressed with the wide selection on offer, which contained many dishes not offered in other Chinese restaurants I have visited. We selected a range of starters and mains and were very impressed with the high quality of the food and generous portions. With so many Chinese restaurants in this area, I would definitely recommend this restaurant over the others.

Cook your own meat on the table in what begins as a basic soup, which then accumulates flavours and overall is a delicious experience.

We went in a party of four on a Friday night, and had a really good meal. Our son lives in Birmingham and had done a bit of research and Jacky's Kitchen had come to the top of the pile. The address (Unit 4, Southside) suggested that it wasn't going to be one of those rather imposing restaurants that leave you floundering in unfamiliar terms. True enough, it looks like a pretty down-to-earth place; the kind of place you might easily walk past. The clientele were overwhelmingly Chinese and the service was efficient rather than effusive. Like a tourist trap cafe in Barcelona, but far more helpfully, there were photographs of the dishes on the English menu. Haute cuisine it certainly wasn't, but it was delicious and so filling we were embarrassed not to be able to finish it all. We shared all our dishes, had a few beers as well, and we would certainly go back again.

I was on my way for an Indian but it was raining and I was passing this restaurant. It was full of Chinese so I thought it was worth a try. I wasn't disappointed, the young staff were very friendly and welcoming, the food was delicious and the cost was reasonable. The dishes are more like authentic Chinese (apparently) rather than your normal Chinese restaurant, but I am happy to try most things at least once. I'll be back next time I'm in Birmingham.

We went to Jacky's Kitchen for the Mongolian Hotpot, for which they are famous. This is a huge bowl, divided down the middle and filled with an unspiced chicken broth, and a hugely spicy broth. The broth is kept bubbling on an induction hob. Plates and plates of raw food arrive, and you cook the raw ingredients in either of the broths. There is a choice of ingredients, but the best value is the £13.00 per person option, which includes everything you could want, and some stuff you may not want. If you want more of something, you just ask and they bring it over. Our plates were filled with: shaved, rather fatty lamb, white fish, fish balls, prawns, lobster balls, two different types of flavoured tofu, congealed pigs' blood (didn't really taste of much at all), different green vegetables and noodles.Allow about two hours to eat this lot. It's fun, but we probably won't have it again. The regular menu is extensive, and the food looks good. The staff were very helpful, but their English was limited, apart from the manageress, who was very friendly.

If you seek authentic chinese food you must go here, you will find dishes to amaze and delight you. A word of caution however, if you go expecting the usual westernised dishes that you find in every high street takeaway you are in for a few surprises.

popped in for a takeaway, wish i hadnt bothered. i ordered chicken and mushroom soup and half a crispy duck. the soup was not on the menu but they said they would be happy to prepare it for me. i wish they had not bothered, it looked and tased like something i would blow out of my nose. As for the duck, it came already shredded for me with pancakes and onions and cucumber, it was dry and tasteless and not worth £15.00 of anyones money and to be honest it was not the amount i would expect from half a duck, to be honest i could have got more off a quarter of a duck. will not be eating there again and would strongly advise anyone else to avoid the place

No frills, but good food. Slightly 'round the corner' from the main chinese quarter. So only people who know go there - mostly local chinese - probably 80%.Warning - portions are generous, but so tasty you want to eat the lot. Service ok, but better if you chat to servers. They'll leave you to yourself if you don't initiate it.As others have said - a few non-western meat cuts :-) but 95-99% things you know. Go here to eat - not to impress.

This restaurant is in the lively Southside area of the city, home to the Hippodrome theatre, Chinese quarter and a variety of bars. I've eaten here a number of times and every time leave impressed with the quality and standard of the food. The menu is definately not a typical English chinese takeaway style although mixed in with authentic Chinese dishes are your typical dishes such as yuk sung and sweet and sour. The staff are always very friendly and will offer advice on the menu, especially if you want to try something different from the normal Chinese food. Our favourite Chinese restaurant in china town.

I tried Jacky's Kitchen on Sunday lunchtime. I was given what I can only describe as a cold and hostile welcome when I enquired about using a voucher cloud 2 for 1 of main meals offer although I was told that they would accept the offer and was shown to a table. Furthermore I was told I had to book in advance when the restaurant was clearly empty, but that on this occasion they would "let us off".Upon ordering I wanted to use the 2 for 1 voucher. There were three of us, we only wanted a light lucnh so 2 meals between the three would suffice. I was told by the waiter that because there were three of us the way the voucher would work is if we were to buy two meals we would get the third free. This was NOT what was written on the voucher (as you will see from voucher cloud). The guy was being unreasonable and refused to accept the voucher the way it was written. It seems they make up the rules on the spot depending on who is sitting in front of them! I can't comment on the quality of the food because I felt so unwelcome and put off by the customer service that we decided to move on.

Second time i've eaten here. Excellent value for money and i will eat here again next month. The Peking duck is lovely!! Also this time, i didn't drink alcohol as i'm pregnant and i didn't want anything fizzy. I asked for tap water and they were fine. We took ages eating our meal - and i mean ages, yet we were left alone. Proper Chinese food at a very good price. On both occasions the place has had mostly Chinese people in it....so if they are always in here, it really must be good ;-)

We went to eat at Jacky's with high expectations considering the rank at Trip Advisor. However, the quality of the meals was quite disappointing to say the least. It was too oily and salty and we didn't feel so well after going out.On the positive side, the atmosphere is quite nice and the personnel is very friendly. If you come for the food, there are much better places in the Chinese Quarter.

Four of us went to Jackys before going to see a show at the theatre just round the corner. We chose jackys after reading good reviews on tripadvisor. All I can say is the food was excellent! Great value for money, authentic Chinese food and big portions! We didn't order starters & glad we didn't as the mains were huge! Staff were friendly & service was good. We will be returning and advise others to give it a try! :-)

Eight of us left the office on Friday evening and wanted somewhere nearby to eat after stopping off to sit in the sun with a glass or two.I was, I admit, a bit sceptical about the 'local Chinese' having had some mediocre meals before.Jacky's was happy to find eight people a table without a booking, staff were friendly and efficient. We were, at that time the only non-Chinese customers in there ... always a good sign if the locals choose to eat there.Staff were accommodating when we asked for four separate bills, which must be a pain when they are very busy. And the food? Absolutely delicious .. as another review said 'the best outside Hong Kong'. It is, I've eaten in Hong Kong myself tooTry the king prawns with chili and garlic, try the lemony chicken, try the yuk-sung. In fact anything you try will be very very good. This little restaurant is a real find. But don't tell the others, I might not get a table next time I'm in there!Go try ... go enjoy.

THE BEST CHINESE TAKEAWAY IN BIRMINGHAM!!! As an Asian myself i rate this place 10/10. The lady was very friendly and sweet, the taste is comparable like somewhere in Asia, especially the Beef Chow Mein is exactly the same like I had in Singapore. The sweet and sour chicken and Beef Chow mein are my favourite. Love it!!

For well over 20 years we have eaten from Szechuan House regularly and considered it the best Chinese take-away in the area by far. We never had a bad dish and the food and service was always wonderful. Sadly, however, it seems to be under new management since we last ordered from there a few months ago. There was no warning or announcement, as far as we were aware, so the first indication of the change was when we phoned to order. Our number has always been recognised by the extremely friendly and efficient Chinese staff, who never had to be told our address. Last week we were answered by a really rude lady with a broad Brummy accent who seemed to struggle with the menu and not even know what was on it. When the food arrived, it was the worst Chinese meal we have ever had. The ribs, normally thick, juicy and in a tasty barbecue sauce, were very dry and fatty, like old meat in a thick, jelly-like substance, like treacle that had no flavour at all but was extremely salty. The spring rolls, normally in a light, crispy pastry stuffed with a fresh, moist & very tasty beansprout mixture, had a thick, stodgy, soggy pastry with tasteless, not at all fresh beansprouts. The prawn toast was just as bad: a layer of very dry, chewy, badly minced prawns with bits of shell in it just sitting rather than spread into the top of very dry toast. Again, it was tasteless but very salty. The pork dumplings were soggy pasty filled with a tasteless, gelatinous mixture, nothing like any pork filling we've ever had before. The Seaweed was overcooked and the fish flavour so overpowering that I gagged. The main courses were also truly awful. Rice noodles with pork (my favourite usually) were dry (the bits of pork that are usually juicy and fresh, were like scrap leftovers that had been sitting around for a couple of days. The Char Siu was not Char Siu at all. Char Siu is actually marinated then roast pork served sliced with a distinctive red colour around the edges and nothing else. What we got was boiled pork in a bland but salty glutinous sauce with vegetables. The beef dish was no better, with dry beef in a very thick very salty sauce that just tasted of soy sauce. The rice was probably the best dish but even that was overcooked but dry and crispy around the edges. I like my food salty and always add extra, to the dismay of my family, but even for me this meal was far too salty, I suppose to mask the lack of taste. To top it all there were no fortune cookies. Suffice to say that, after nearly 25 years, we are having to find a new Chinese takeaway as there is not a chance on earth that we will ever eat from Sezchuan House again, particularly given the 'dodgy' stomachs we all suffered through all night. The food reminded me of the kind of bland tasteless 'Chinese' food, full of monosodium glutomate, that was served in the 1970s when foreign food takeaways were unusual and most Brits thought vol-au-vents were sophisticated. If we could give Szechuan House zero stars, we would. Such a shame.

Useless. No delivery after 2 hours ordering online and how can you cancel an online order on the phone if you can't get through? A lost customer.

Love the milkshakes at this place they are amazing and cheap wouldn't expect a milkshake that costs £1.50 to taste this good.
