Was enticed in by the smell after getting off the train. With half an hour to wait before our return journey on the last train of the evening we enquired of the lady behind the counter if this would be enough time. “oh yes, they will be around 10 minutes” . 20 minutes later we were getting a little anxious, but there was no rushing the chap doing the cooking.Eventually got our order and had to make a dash for the train. If I was running a chip shop located within a railway station I would be sure to have enough food ready for when the trains arrived, though maybe the staff derived some enjoyment from the Russian roulette.Haddock was tasty, but despite taking so long to cook the chips were underdone.

Paid £6.40 for 2 portions of chips but NEVER received them. It was very annoying because we asked the server before purchasing if the chips were ready and explained that the train leaves at 2.10pm and would the chips be read in time. "Yes, they will be ready in 2 minutes". However, approximately 10 minutes later, they seemed to be serving up back orders before us, really slowly. Then the guard whistle blew so we had to leave without the chips that we had paid for. There clearly wasn't enough chips left to cover our order! Just be honest the next time, and explain you have a lot of orders waiting and/or offer a refund when you know you can't supply on time! Excellence for getting money for NOTHING!

Straight off the Knoydart Ferry and straight into the Chippy. Freshly cooked fish, really tasty and exactly what was needed for my tea. I was planning on haggis or black pudding but then decided that I couldn't come to Mallaig and not have a fish supper. Still a good temperature after the walk to East Bay car park, the seagulls weren't getting any of my food! Would certainly choose Jaffy's again.

This chippy is the first you get to when getting off the train at Malliag, so you might expect they would be prepared for the arrival of upto 400 hungry people getting off the daily Jacobite steam train, Unfortunately they were not, A long qie formed straight away and with 1 person cooking and 1 serving, they just couldn't cope.. only 1 type of fish was available from an already limited menu, and the results were nothing to get excited about. Maybe have 1 more staff memeber then you'd have time to smile and appreciate the customers who didn't walk away

We popped in to Jaffys, on a trip to mallaig. Decided to grab a quick fish and chips, bad idea. The fish was thinner than the batter, and soaked with grease. The chips where hard and poor portion. You would think being so close to the sea and knowing that it’s what people expect of a chip shop, to at least have a decent haddock. £10.80 for a greasy fish supper is not a good advertisement for a place that relies on tourism.

We have eaten here several times over the years and have never been disappointed. We wandered in and asked for cod, haddock and 2 x chips; the lady serving rather coldly informed us that there was no cod left. We enjoyed our fish and chips, they were fantastic but the service left a bad taste in the mouth.

We came off the jacobite train and most restaurants were closed! Why, you tell me? Do they want tourists evidently not! I heard all sorts of accents from around the world. Got 2 haddock and chips for a whopping £19. The chips were brick hard. The fish drippng in grease and sat at the top of our stomachs all day. Now this was taking the proverbial and cashing in without a care. Shame on you Jaffys you are representing Scotland and doing it extremely badly.

Ordered a single fish, £9. Not sure if it is locally bought, being a fishing port. The taste suggested that it had travelled some distance ( not being fresh) perhaps a local fishmonger in Fort William supplies them, hence the overpricing. I have haddock every week from my local Fishman, so I know when fish is fresh. For a fish shop in a fishing port, serving days old fish is criminal

It is a long trip for us to get here, but having had three great takeaway meals at previous visits, on a (finally) hot day we made the effort. What a disappointment - disinterested, brusque service, and two repulsive takeaway meals. The chips were seriously undercooked, hard to understand why given it was 12.05 and the door signage said they opened at 11.30 , and it was empty (20 mins until steam train came in). We also ordered two battered sausages - hubby left almost all his as it made him feel nauseous - the batter was wet and limp, like a skin of leather that just fell off the sausage - not a hint of crispy and well cooked. The sausage inside was beyond gross - a grey rusk mush and clearly the cheapest option they could get. The tiny portion of curry sauce was instantly forgettable. At these prices this is stunningly bad VFM. Is this place under new management or what? We will visit Mallaig again, but we will use their competitor around the corner.

We had taken the West Highland train from Fort William to Mallaig and had 2 & a half hours in Mallaig before catching the train back. It was lunchtime and we were hungry. The first place you see coming out of the station is Jaffys fish & chip shop so we decided to have lunch from there. My husband asked for a filled roll as advertised on the signs outside - they were off. He then asked for a venison burger which was on the menu on the wall - off! He asked for scampi which was available but he was disappointed that the portion was very small for the price. I had fish and chips which were very nice but rather overpriced especially as they are served in a cardboard box with no cutlery. We thought they are ideally situated to entice passengers in and are making the most of that. There is also a shop but we didn't browse because we expected that the items would be expensive. We walked around Mallaig after lunch and saw other places we could have had a less expensive sit at a proper table lunch with cutlery. So, in summary, very nice but a bit overpriced.

I’d come to Mallaig instead of walking around Fort William. Due mainly to the weather. I’d only been through the town after a ferry trip from Skye, 24 years previously. I had a quick look around I fancied the Mallaig kippers. These proved elusive as I checked many menus and online. Jaffy was mentioned online so I headed there when it opened at 12. I hadn’t realised that it was a fish and chip takeaway with a small deli counter. There were no kippers, although I thoroughly enjoyed scampi, chips and a cup of tea. I got a stool next to the window and within 5 minutes was joined by over 20 tourists of many nationalities enjoying a deep fried lunch. Excellent!

How wrong we were! The ‘fish’ was mostly batter, very pale, greasy and odd tasting, (that might have been the oil they used), and the chips had only been shown the fryer they were that anaemic! Unfortunately we had driven away before we opened the boxes and it wasn’t worth our while to drive back to pass on our feedback. Not a good advert for a coastal town and not somewhere we’d recommend.

The fish is very fresh, tasty and crispy!! Chips are great also. You can sit in and have a view on Jaccobite train arrival! Great place for a first/last fish and chips while traveling Skye!

I wouldn’t normally write a review of a fish and chip shop as it is not a restaurant, but Jaffy’s does carry out fish and chips to perfection. On a sunny day, take your freshly cooked haddock and chips to the breakwater stones by the car park a couple of minutes walk away and enjoy while sitting looking out to the Small Isles. Perfect!

Good service, decent chips and lovely haggis to go with your fish. Save room for ice-cream, Best flavours from Mackies ice cream in the shop. Grab a takeaway and go eat down by the harbour.

We hosted our wedding at the Waterside in June 2024 - it was a lovely & fun day for all, largely due to the help of our wedding coordinator Tiff! She went above & beyond to help me have a picturesque & fun day, I didn't have to worry about the setup or the breakdown - she even saved one of my wedding donuts for me when I never got a chance to have one during the night :) The reason for the loss of a star for the rooms is purely because the honeymoon suite lacked a mini fridge >> which I think would have been really helpful as we had several leftovers + wine we wanted to keep chilled. The loss of the star for service was due to some miscommunication between the hotel bookings & the event coordination, (i.e. after we had paid our deposit, someone on the booking side at the hotel had "force booked" several rooms for the day of the wedding for another guest/party, including the honeymoon suite) - which my husband spoke to the manager about & thankfully they resolved before the day.

Slow. Nasty and tasteless. Avoid with every being of your heart. The one down by the river is much better I can't recall the name but far tastier.

We had drinks and a meal yesterday, early evening. The staff were very welcoming and the bar, although small was busy with a good atmosphere. The fish and chips were absolutely delicious; perfectly cooked fish, light batter and the triple cooked chips were the best I’ve ever had. They are dog friendly so we’ll be back next week with our dog. Thank you.
