This woman is not the ideal person to run a business, she ignored me the first time I went in as she was on the phone to a bank, then the next time I came back an hour later she was so flus=stered she spoke to me like I was not wanted in there ...... this is the 4th time I have tried to visit this cafe and she has been rude every time , the post office is dirty and needs a complete re-fit - awful and I would never go back

My friend and I came here on Thursday for coffee and were given a warm welcome by the charming lady who single handedly runs the cafe and the post office. We were offered newspapers to read as there was a short wait whilst she attended to post office duties. We ordered coffee which was extremely tasty and delicious freshly baked cakes, also excellent. It is a rather unusual set up but most pleasant and full admiration for the obviously very hard working owner.

We found other reviews to be an accurate reflection - good food and drink but unconventional service. Overall, I think the owner was anxious to get things exactly right and was trying her best to be in two places at once but if you are easily offended, I'd try elsewhere.

Lovely, quirky place. The lady who runs it was friendly and welcoming to my husband, me and our dog too. Limited breakfast menu but when the host explained the reason for this is that she also runs the post office at the same time we understood why. Had a lovely breakfast here.

I went to the post office to send of some mail and the post mistress was kind and helpful. She offered me a drink while I waited in the shop as the weather was bad and I didn’t have to pay for it! I have visited this cafe many times and it’s a go to for me. I would definitely recommend if you are after a friendly chat and nice food! If you speak Welsh even better as the owner is always up for a conversation in Welsh!

I visited with 2 other motorcycle friends and arrived a little bit early. The owner saw us and welcomed us into the cafe before it was open. We were served a hearty traditional breakfast with real coffee in cafetieres, proper local sausages and bacon, thick-cut crusty loaf toast and the best welcome to be had this side of the border.Well worth the effort to ride from North Wales.

I had the most amazing cake at the ivy house, there was a great choice available. They did serve a lot of other food but we just went for the cake. The decor is a little dated and it’s quite cluttered with things for sale, I really like it but I can imagine it’s a bit too rustic charm for some. I would visit again.

Late lunch with the family after a morning walking around the ruined castle. The food we had was OK, but the bill at the end was a little steep. We ordered 2 soups for the kids, these came, tasted great and were good value. My wife and I ordered the sharing platter for £12, it came with 2 small blocks of cheese, 1 slice of white bread and 1 slice of granary. 2 small pots of chutney and a bit of salad. Tasted good? But a bit of a rip off.The service wasn’t brilliant either, i would like to say they were rushed off their feet, but we were the only customers in the place. We won’t rush back.

Friends of the family and I came here after a walk around the area for lunch, and unfortunately it didn’t make for a very relaxing afternoon; we booked a table which we were then told had been taken by another family and were hence moved upstairs, into a bad- smelling room selling dusty books and old clothes. We ordered, and were told by our waitress (who seemed extremely stressed) that they weren’t able to provide lots of the food we asked for, and when we finally had our compromised meals in front of us they were less than what we expected. However, we were able to make light of things and found a reason to laugh when we asked for some ketchup and said nervous waitress literally sprinted down the road and into the nearby shop to buy some for us! Never have I felt such an inconvenience in a place built for serving paying customers.

Some people should NOT be running a food business! We called in for coffee/cake and a couple who politely asked for cooked breakfasts were told that they couldn't have them because 'she was on her own and couldn't do them'. Looking at other reviews, this seems to be a common occurrence! She was untidy and rude. Our 'cappuccinos' were basically hot milk waved at some coffee grounds, the cake was very nice though. Paying was also a negative experience! It gets 2 stars from me purely because of the cake and the very pleasant second waitress who seemed to pour oil on troubled waters! We went to Ludlow the day after and had superb coffee with toasted teacakes, it was cheaper!

Very poor experience. Sat down with my family to have breakfast to be told sorry can’t cook breakfasts as will take too long! Strange really as it has the word ‘cafe’ emblazoned on the wall outside. I appreciate if understaffed, but a more courteous approach would have made the difference. Disappointing as in a small village you would have expected visitors would be made to feel more welcomed....

We had visited some years before and decided to drop in on a short tour around mid Wales. Very small cafe (6 tables downstairs) sharing premises with Post Office. Nice cosy atmosphere. Food was all good and reasonably priced. I tried their Curry & Orange Veg soup. A new one on me, but excellent. However the real star of the show was Emma the waitress who was outstanding. A friendly greeting for every customer, happy to customise the offerings, and even offered some treats for a small dog visiting. Quick order taking, and conversation & attention with every customer. Simply outstanding service and all the sub standard waitresses in so many places could take a lesson. A must stop for us whenever we are in the area in future.

I have never written a review before but after an astounding lunch visit here I felt I must. After spending a lovely time exploring the town where I grew up in over 50 years ago we decided on lunch here. We had an hour before we had to be somewhere, plenty of time for soup and a ploughman’s for my husband and a baked potato for me. Or so we thought. After 35 minutes my husband enquired whether our food was all coming together. Apparently not so realising our time constraints he cancelled the ploughman’s and opted for just the soup. The owner/ cook came from the kitchen and into the cafe in front of the other customers and rudely told him we had been informed there was a 15 minute delay when we ordered. We had not been told as then we would have chosen our food accordingly. She refused to listen and asked my husband if she was meant to throw away the cheese she was slicing for his ploughman’s!!! We had been there 40 minutes already with no sign of food for either of us. Later customers had already had their order..... of soup! I eventually got my baked potato, it was lovely. When I paid I tried to explain again that we knew nothing of the delay. She was rude and didn’t listen. On a plus she decided not to charge us and suggested we made a donation to one of her charity boxes. So the winner in all of this lunch debacle was Hope House! The owner, if that’s who we dealt with, should definitely not be in the kitchen if she gets as stressed as she appeared to be and definitely should not be dealing with her paying customers. Such a shame

I can only endorse the previous 2 reviews as we experienced the same at this cafe . The lady serving greeted us with “ I am limited what I can offer as I’m on my own and we’ve been really busy” . 3 of our party only wanted drinks and welsh cakes but the 4th member of our party deemed to want a tuna sandwich , well after a lot of huffing and puffing she agreed to “well if you’re going to pressure me I suppose I could make one but you’ll have to wait as I’m on my own and the kitchen is a disaster” . Quite honestly we should have walked out at that point but our friend was quite hungry so we preserved . Now hears the ridiculous part the drink and food all arrived in a reasonable time and was lovely . We then went to pay and again was told “you’ll have to wait a few minutes as I’m busy doing this order “ . There was one other party there admittedly quite large but how long does it take to just say it’s x amount . We then stood for 10 minutes just watching her whizz to and from with one item at a time . Eventually she told us how much and said “I’m so busy just leave the money on the till “ and whizzed off again . The whole experience was agitated and unpleasant , we have been here several times as we visit Montgomery regularly but never experienced this poor service before and guess what we won’t again as we shall not be returning .

Whilst paying my bill at the counter I dropped the dogs lead and she walked away, unfortunately she entered the kitchen. Visited today at about 12:30pm for lunch, the menu was quite basic, but I decided to choose off the breakfast part of the menu as I assumed it was an ‘all day breakfast’ as it didn’t state otherwise - I was wrong, no breakfast, so I chose a sandwich, cheese on toast for my 7 year old, and my husband had the ploughman’s (which he said was great) The sandwich was average (the bread was literally cut like a door stop) and the cheese on toast burnt. I had a ‘cappuccino’ the first one was stone cold so I had to ask for a replacement ( I hate sending things back) the second one was latte, definitely not cappuccino. No teaspoons were given to add sugar, no milk for the tea, no napkins, felt like we were being awkward keep asking for things, then waited ages for someone to appear to pay. There was two other lots of people dining and although the waitress was friendly enough, she didn’t know anything about the menu when asked.

Friendly service, drinks promptly served and a word that food would be a little while, but that is what I would expect when food is freshly prepared to order. Ok, so I don't normally have negative things to say about small businesses doing their best. After all, you can't please everyone. However, I have to say that after having breakfast with my cage fighter boyfriend - I was very dissmayed. Despite his skills, he has a calm disposiation - and doesn't kick-off very often. In fact, the last time he did it was purely down to the cold nature of his turkey twirlers (crispy on the outside - cold in the centre). Aside from the above intro, one of our concerns was the fact I'm not a slippery egg lover. Guess what happened? I got a very slippery egg?! In fact, it was so slippery, that it slid off my plate and out the door. My boyfriend Doodle was so impressed that he nudged his egg off the plate - in order to see what would happen. To our delight, it slid off the plate at a terrible speed. Of course he knew this was coming, and so he climbed aboard the slippery egg and surfed out the door - never to be seen again.....a terrible story, from a slippery doodle.

I'm not sure where they'd put it as it's already crammed full of quirky artefacts... Not ideal if your OCD, but if like me, you like a proper British cafe, and not the boring chains, it's great. Staff are friendly, dogs are welcome.

Unusual cafe that my OCD nature wanted to blitz! However, the cake was generous and lovely.Unfortunately my partner said the toilet needed some attention as the seat didn't stay up. A detail the all female staff probably wouldn't appreciate!Go for the cake, not the toilet!

Popped in for a snack. It is a quirky place, full of art, books, greetings cards etc. The cakes looked great and indeed they were but we ordered two lattes which seemed to be made with instant coffee.Others were having lunch which looked great.

Walked in to a pleasant and relaxed dining area. Found a table after not being able to do so so in the cafe over the road. Ordered within 10 minutes. 2 soup, 2 scones and some tea for group of 4. .........Now set your stop watch. Attempt at British and Commonwealth record for ineptitude under way......10. 20. 30.....These are minutes not seconds. Waitress enters area like a plane passing overhead when you have been marooned on a remote island for weeks. Beard growing long and clothing become tatty. A polite reminder given and a reassuring comment leaves us feeling foolishly comforted.....40. 50.With my holiday being cut short in such an enexpected way I gave it five more minutes. They went as I did. We did in fact get our tea at some point. One of party decided to 'hang on in there' as they say. The bowl of soup did arrive at a new Commonwealth record of 1.02.66.It was described as a pile of soup so thick that the spoon could be paced vertically into it and left so without support. Come on cafe you can do better than this!

The cakes are lovely and fresh, made by the staff who work there. The place is quirky, parking is free outside. The only downside I felt the staff were a little rude when we walked in, perhaps because we weren't locals. I would visit again but just for the cakes.

Friendly atmosphere in what could be your own front room. A splendid elevated view of the main thoroughfare in the interesting former county town of Montgomeryshire. Lovely cup of coffee and homemade cakes, scones and jam with an interesting menu of more substantial meals should you wish. I think vegetarians seem to be well catered for here. Also nice clean cloakroom in what doubles up as the owners utility room! The whole place certainly has a family feel about it but we'll worth a visit if you are in the area; very reasonably priced as well (Offas Dyke is close by and the Long Myndd )

Friendly staff, good food. I had a cream tea which was very nice, served quickly by a friendly waitress who was happy to chat about the local area. It's quite a small cafe but seems to be popular.

We only had half an hour to grab a quick lunch and asked the super friendly waitress if that would be possible. She made sure that we got served impressively fast even if the place was full. Our sandwiches were homemade, really tasty, huge with lots of filling and very modestly priced. The latte was hot, strong, milky and the best latte I have had in years. It was a shame that we didn't have more time to enjoy this quirky little place, but we will surely be back on our next visit to Montgomery.

This is a delightful café in a delightful town. We were made very welcome and everyone was friendly and helpful. The food was home cooked and very tasty. There was plenty of it and as for the ice-cream - it was truly scrumptious! We enjoyed our visit and but for lack of time we would most certainly have gone back. I warmly recommend it.

This is as basic as it gets - low quality tea bags and scones with hard cheap wrapped butter. Waitress not au fait with the menu prices when asked a simple question about the difference between the cream tea and a pot of tea and a scone. The tea room is a ragbag of books, games such as scrabble and "pictures" hung indiscriminately. Our son remarked that there was a charity shop atmosphere. The tea cups had a dishwasher smell about them and were far too big for the small saucers. General unfriendly feel to the place ie not made to feel welcome on arrival and not asked if we were enjoying etc. Really disliked this tea room to the extent that we will never to return to Montgomery. Relieved to get back to Shrewsbury where are several high standard tea rooms.

After a bad experience about our dog at Castle Kitchen, we walked up the road and came here. Dogs welcomed with a cheese treat and a water bowl. My wife ate an egg mayonnaise sandwich. She had to use a knife and fork as bread so thick and full of egg. They must have used 3 or 4 eggs. I had cheese ploughmans - there must have been 150 grams of cheddar with lots of chutneys and a full salad. This lunch was not expensive, service was excellent and I would highly recommend

Popped in for coffee and cake while in Wales visiting family. We all had a latte which was just instant coffee made with warm milk but the price of a proper latte!! We also had cheese scones which were tasty but very very crumbly. You couldn't spread with butter because the moment you touched it it was crumbs. My father has a dog so he was happy to be able to take her in but I could see other people weren't so keen on this. The building was very old and quaint but in need of some tlc.

Popped in for light lunch without having read any of the previous reviews. This cafe has character - you know as soon as you walk in that this isn't part of any chain and oozes its friendly welcome to you. The sandwich ordered for my 15 year old was a proper doorstopper with hand cut bread and plenty of filling. The Welsh cheese platter was huge also - enough cheese for three and the 'black bomber' is just amazing! I appreciated the unsolicited offer of an extra slice of bread as I worked my way through the tasty selection. Will definitely go again if in the area.

Late Saturday afternoon lunch after all the cyclists had left [some kind of competition], and the wedding in the church was over we decided to give this Cafe a try. Very dog friendly, offers of water bowl and cheese before we ordered our food. We had the afternoon tea for two sandwichs 3 types, cake 2 types, cream scone plain or fruity plus large pot of tea for £15 for two. Offered to wrap up any cake we couldn't eat. I have a desire to go back for more visits to work my way through the menu-breakfasts look good.Vegeterian options available.

We visited this cafe with 4 dogs in tow. We were welcomed in,no problem. The service was excellent, the cake and coffee was superb. So much so that we had seconds of beverages. We're so used to being refused with dogs,it's a pleasure to find someone happy to take dogs. We will certainly be back. Thank you so much

The main cafe area was full when we arrived so we asked if we could make use of the addiction all seating area upstairs. A pleasant waitress showed us upstairs but made no attempt to give us a menu or wipe down the crumb strewn table we sat at. After a short wait a very nervous girl came and took our order, she barely spoke and again was oblivious to the the grubbiness around us. We ordered fruit scones, welsh cakes and cheese scones, all of which arrived quite quickly and were warm, fresh and delicious. The milk jug and teapot both were impossible to pour from and the waitress apologised for this and brought napkins to allow us to clear up the resulting mess! All in all we were very happy with the food but think the young serving staff are probably in need of some additional training.

Stumbled on the New Inn for lunch. This little pub turned out to be a bit of a gem - great, home cooked food and friendly staff. A good local crowd too to add some atmosphere!

We stopped here for a few drinks and sat in the pub which was lovely. Plenty of seats and warm cosy rooms. Also had a lovely fuss of Bailey the local dog :) The landlord was very friendly and very kind to give me a birthday drink :) also he gave us some beer and cider recommendations. Reasonable prices and a spotlessly clean pub and toilets. Especially the day after New Year’s Day!! Lots of bar snacks and the landlord told us they have a pizza oven which sounds lovely so shall we come back to have one. Very good atmosphere!!!! We are staying at a local lodge and have came in here a few times. Recommend if you're in the area.

We stayed here for bed and breakfast while enjoying walking in the National Park. Rooms are spacious and clean, if nt a little dated. Friendly service from staff and a fabulous breakfast. A nice chilled atmosphere to the hotel. All reasonably priced, and we look forward to returning again.

We stayed here a few months back and found the place to be excellent again! Last time the breakfast service was poor due to a member of staff, this time the complete opposite ! The pub is amazing and has a nice atmosphere, the restaurant is lovely and the food excellent ! The staff are all really eager to please, the breakfast as I mentioned was excellent with great service ! Room 12 is a challenge for a 6’2 person but comfortable ! The bath should be replaced with a shower cubicle really but can’t fault the place overall and will always come back even if in room 12 :-)
