Itabashi Japanese Izakaya in Richmond upon Thames

There are not many options for dinner. The food doesn’t look like the one shown in pictures.

We regularly get take out from here, the food is fresh, great sushi. Cosy atmosphere when you dine in. Would recommend a visit if you love this type of food.

Ive been twice recently, and since the original Japanese guy left the service has just gone down hill. The food comes out in dribs and drabs, the service staff seem completely zoned out, and capital radio playing really adds to the whole Japan feeling. The food when it arrives is still great, but the atmosphere and service just ruin what was a vibrant place.

A really cosy, quiet place on Teddington high street, serving great quality Japanese food. The tofu had a nice fried crunch with a sweet savoury sauce and the edamame came with a delicate flaky sea salt which tasted great. I've had the lunch bento boxes a lot and they're always a winner - meat/tofu of choice, fried purple sweet potatoes, seasoned vegetables, pickles and sticky rice! The ramen is also fab and you can taste that the stock has been cooked down for hours. Couple of things to note: - Miso soup is free during lunch service which is a nice bonus! - You don't need to book a table unless it's a Friday or Saturday, just rock up. - Great tea selection including Jasmine, Oolong, Lotus etc.

This is a popular restaurant and usually fully booked. It was our first visit to an Izakaya and wasn't sure what to expect, the staff were accomodating and patient. We decided to get a few small plates to start and order more if needed. I'm glad that we chose that tactic as the servings are rather generous; no further plates were required. The food is delicious and well presented. I'm definitely marking another booking, soon!

Authentic Japanese restaurant. Down to earth and yummy. Rarely see in london. It becomes my canteen when I don’t wanna cook!

I discovered Itabashi in September 2021, it was a rare gem. There was a good selection of Japanese food, a fine selection of plum wine and nice staff working there. There was a super skinny japanese waiter that was always smiling and would explain and suggest dishes. The Korean owner was always at the sushi bar, cutting and torching fish for the various sushi and sashimi. The food was fresh and fragrant. My favourites were pork Ramen that used to come in a large metal bowl, wakame su (sea weed) and the mixed vegetable tempura. I was so happy that for Christmas I ordered a full lunch of take away sushi for all my family, expensive but good quality.... everything freshly made. Two years later, a lot of things have changed, and not in the best direction. The elegant super skinny japanese chap has long gone, replaced by a multitude of teenagers that seem to change on a monthly basis. They are friendly, but clueless. They forget drinks and forget dishes and you constantky have to remind them that something is missing. They are not interested in the clients, they are students and come and go. The owner is not there preparing sushi anymore, replaced by youths as well. The Ramen is now served in bowl half the size of the previous ones and the pork as I found out in the last visit, can be described as "traces"...the soup is tasty but basically more suited for vegetarians due the nil amount of meat. The menu has not changed in three years, but quantities and interest in quality are not the same. The place has lost its charme and attention to detail is gone. It is now an average place which is sad considering that it is in the middle of affluent Teddington.

Very good place! We have spent a nice evening the atmosphere is relaxing and the food is high quality and well prepared. The prices are reasonable for a Japanese restaurant. Too good that I forgot to take pictures… next time 😅

Outstanding food and service. Really warm welcoming environment with a local feel. It’s obviously very popular with the locals and worth the trip for those further out. Everything we tried was top quality and even got an unexpected matcha cake which was lovely.

An absolute gem of a restaurant

Amazing food service was ok but would definitely go back :)

Very poor experience, my partner’s meal arrived and 15 minutes later I was still waiting for my meal. When I asked the waiting staff when my meal was coming I was told there was a big takeaway order being dealt with. Another member of staff told me that my order hadn’t been processed and I wouldn’t have to pay for my main course. By the time the meal arrived my partner had finished his meal and quite frankly I really didn’t want to eat mine. Have been to the restaurant a lot of times and probably won’t go back again. One problem was that there didn’t seem to be a manager in charge who was overseeing the staff.

Staying nearby, our son loves Sushi so booked a table. Helpful staff and pleasant surroundings. The food was top notch no wonder the restaurant was busy. I have to say the grilled eel was my favourite, well we were in London! Will visit again next time we are down.

Great food and friendly staffs with great services . Been here several times. Food is fresh and delicious with reasonable prices. Kids loved the menu here and will definitely come back for more lovely food again.

Good quality sushi, tasty but portions are relatively small for the price.

Sushi was incredible, pricing was really good, decent variety and were happy to accommodate alternatives.

Overall great food, close to authentic Japanese food (not the fake ones if you know what I mean) Portions are a bit smaller than usual. Nice presentation but can be better. Friendly service. Busy place, booking is recommended.

Ordered for delivery three tempura dishes and some ramen noodles. Tempura was a disappointment: “prawn” in particular was soggy and tasteless; vegetables similar; squid not bad but accompanied by a nasty sauce. Noodles not bad. Tempura may be better in the restaurant (because fresh) but not sure about quality of ingredients.

Warm welcoming atmosphere, very helpful staff and efficient service. Everything that we tried from the extensive menu was delicious. This was our 1st meal here, we'll definitely be back.

Wonderful food, Beef Tataki was a particular standout.

Chef is a Japanese.. Food is extremely authentic. Interior design was lovely. Entire experience made me feel like I was back in Japan

Service a bit slow everything else great

I've ordered lots of times from Itabashi over the past several years. Unfortunately they recently they changed their delivery policies. After spending a while with the family selecting our order I went to place the order, they explained I was (now) outside of their delivery area and needed to pay an extra £2.50 ... which was fine so proceeded. They then took payment but then told me they had no delivery driver, so rejected the order. However they'd taken the money!! and I might have to wait several days for a refund!! ... terrible way to implement a system ... owner was less than apologetic when I called him to explain the error in their process ... Result ... lost customer ... that's no way to do business

If you like Japanese food, this restaurant is excellent - and without the heavy cost of many others offering such cuisine.

Consistently great quality and very tasty Japanese food. We tend to use their takeaway service, but they also deliver locally, and the restaurant itself is very lovely. We're never disappointed when we eat here

I’ve heard lovely things about this place so we booked a table for lunch. It was lovely and nothing to complain. However the food was good but not great as I expected it.

This place appears to have fallen a little in terms of performance , typically nice been at lunch and it's been excellent this timen I went on a Thursday night we were the only diner's and the food quality has significant dropped , the noodles didn't feel fresh , the menu was vastly reduced and not particularly cost effective , I'd do lunch again but not dinner

Quite frankly, one of the best Izakayas in all of the London boroughs. I eat here almost every week and in the past 5+ years that I've been a patron, the quality has remained consistently excellent.

Travelled an hour to this amazing place for proper sushi! Great food, great selection of sushi and traditional Japanese meal, and they use such high quality fish! Highly recommended dishes, the beef sushi roll, and mixed selection. We will be back.

Hi I turned at Itabashi Restaurant in Teddington with my son...it was pouring with rain..we were made very welcome by the staff...I said I needed room for another 3 making 5...I was told no problem... Only two of us really know our way around a Japanese menu..so we're grateful really helpful menu tips were offered by the staff. With their help we were able to organise a delicious variety of dishes ..starters for 5 Great choice of 5 meals...looked very appetising and tasted absolutely superb.. Best meal I've had in a long time...we were all well satisfied.. generous portions and we'll prepared...The service was prompt and the staff were polite.. friendly and pleasure to be served by ... I certainly will be going back... recommending to others... 10/10 highly recommend...

The worst Japanese I ever had though out my life in the UK and Asia. Over priced in compare to the quality. Only the sushi chef is trained to a certain extend. All other foods are rather heavily over seasoned (even for a place for alcohol drinking) or wrongly cooked. Miso paste was poor quality selected in compare to the price. Spring onion within the Yakisoba was burnt and the noodles were over cooked into a soggy version. The black cod has nothing but again over seasoned cheap Miso paste. I was extremely hesitated to pay for the VAT.

Restaurant with a great atmosphere! The environment is lovely, the staff are very friendly, and the food is excellent. They have decent vegetarian options too! We particularly love the Tofu Bento Box for lunch!

Been eating here ever since they opened. Food is quality. Always amazingly fresh. Well prepared. Great staff. Lovely ambiance and friendly atmosphere. So happy it is just down the road from us so we can walk.

So tonight I was finishing late with zoom meeting I decided to go to Sidra but it was close. I decided to go for Japanese in take away. I have checked the reviews there before. What a disappointment! The eby fry were pale, no panko just a clear dough soft , not the softness due to the steam when packed, soft because not enough cooked. No seasoning, no sauce so pretty bland. The pork neck was flakes of clearly boiled pork with a ton of soya and carottes. The hosomaki were not much tasty, without tasty sauce just 3 pack of sauce sauce, 1 nanogram of wasabi and a few of ginger. To finish the salmon sashimi was a carpaccio with a truffle dressing that look like dark tea. It was thinner than in average restaurant. I could see the packaging through it. I called the restaurant and brought back the pork as this is what they asked me to bring over. On my way back to them (way after normal bed time for the kids) I threw away the rest of the starters. After 5-10 mn waiting to retrieve my plate the sous-chef (that never addressed to us) ask the waitress to ask us to bring the hosomaki too. I was livid, first it should have been asked prior refund and me coming and this is pretty small as they know better than me what happened in the kitchen. I have wasted my time running errand and ending cooking! It must have been a great place by the paste but now I wouldn’t recommend.

Love it, great sushi and the people were really nice. Dessert and tea were very good as well.

Wow! We’ve lived in Teddington for over 5 years and have no idea why we haven’t eaten here before. The food is fantastic! We had a takeaway with katsu curry and various smaller items - California roll, soft shell crab maki etc. all of it delicious and good portions. The staff were friendly, although I was only there to collect, so can’t say anything about eating in. Very impressed though and will eat there again for sure.

Ordered through Ubereats, sushi was too acidic, I think they put too much rice vinegar. Sashimi and tokoyaki was fine. Was expecting better, definitely won't order again 😕

We ordered pick up / take away. The staff are very friendly and warm welcoming. Chef’s special sashimi is fresh and good quality. Also we had miso Aborigine as start. We really enjoyed dinner. Great food. And all of this paid around £42

We ate here Saturday night whilst staying in the area. The staff were very friendly and helpful with any questions we had and the food was fantastic.

I've eaten here 3 times in the last few months, every time at 12pm when they open and have tried something different every time. The menu is vast and has pictures so anyone who's not familiar with japanese food knows what they're getting and let me tell you, you're getting value for money and LOTS of flavour in each dish! They have a lunch menu which is almost a concised version of the main menu and includes free Miso Soup. Staff are all friendly and helpful, checking if we're okay/need anything. Its a tightly run ship for sure and all reasonably priced. Highly recommended!

Very good take-away collection Great tasting food

We booked for an early dinner at 615. The restaurant itself was pleasant. However the menus were slighly oily and we felt watched over like hawks by the waiting staff throughout the meal. We ordered the spinach (excellent), fried tofu (average), octopus balls (excellent), yaki udon beef noodles (bland), and the piece de resistance Black Cod (really poor - rubbery, damp, very small for £17!). I love Japanese food and was genuinely excited about this restaurant and the positive reviews. It could be down to what you order as to what kind of food experience you get. The prawn tempura ordered at another table, for example, looked great, as we headed out the door . . . I will give the place another go for lunch and try their Ramen. However for the price of the food and its varying quality, our overall experience for dinner was not great.

This is a lovely place with amazing food. I love the attention for details and really delicious food here. Friendly stuff. Highly recommend 😊

Quality of sashimi very good, as was the service

the Japanese manager or owner was quite rude by insisting for me to pay the miso soup that on my taste was very salty. nothing like taste miso at all and service charge was compulsory! we are but coming back there at all the food is not that taste and very expensive!

Great food when I've had it delivery but went in for take out tonight and completely out of the blue the guy running things was rude and offensive. Very upsetting and strange situation and sadly wouldn't eat there again

Tough getting a actual ramen in teddington ( noodle soup easy enough but proper bone broth Ramen no ) so i was very pleased when i found they had ramen and very good it was as well

Simply wow. Excellent sushi - authentic and well presented. This hidden gem in Teddington has been going for a few years now, and hasn’t lost any of the quality or pizzazz. Always busy. Standout dishes are: Aubergine with miso, Sushi, Tempura (but not as a takeaway) Lunch bento boxes with sweet potato fries. Worth the slightly expensive price, which can be mitigated by ordering combos as opposed to a la carte .

As good as ever. We heard that it had undergone some changes through the pandemic but we were delighted that it was as delicious and high quality as its ever been. Would recommend to anyone!

I was a regular at this restaurant before covid and I was excited to see they had fully reopened. After a recent visit, Unfortunately in my opinion the quality has gone down, I know it’s easy to blame covid With food issues, availability of good quality ingredients, but you can’t blame covid for the lack of freshness of the food and lack of care. Fish was not as fresh as it should be considering your eating raw sashimi fish and some of the hot food was not as good as in previous visits. Overall we found the lack of care on the cleaning, our table was dirty and it was annoying we didn’t get any napkin or wipe to clean our hands after using our fingers to eat.

Takeaway last night was brilliant. Sushi was super fresh and clearly very high quality. Great Yakisoba, Katsu and Yakitori too!

Delicious food at a reasonable price. Usually, I go for the Salmon Teriyaki Bento for lunch. The only problem is the waiting time, which can take up to 25 minutes. Be aware that place gets quite warm in the summer and the roof leaks during the rainy season. Stuff is very polite and attentive.

Went there at random for the first time while having a evening walk. At that time it was raining and we went it out of the raining to order something for dinner. The proprietor was so kind to give us some hot Japanese tea to warm us up.👍😀 That was soo nice and kind. We ordered some goyza and beef Soba. My wife wanted the squid Noddle but with Soba instead of Udon. It wasn't a problem! He was so obligingly and kind. What service! Will definitely go back again! Thank you so much!

We ordered for delivery as we hadn't had sushi for a while and have always enjoyed the food we've had at Itabashi. Food was great (esp the Nasu Dengaki) and didn't have to wait long for delivery on a Saturday night once we'd decided what we wanted. Even got 10% off online and no takeaway leftovers!

Just had a takeaway. it was very easy ordering online, came on time as well. But most of all, it was yummy and really good quality 😊 We are lucky having Itagaki as our local. On the website order page, you can put little comments, which is really useful. The girl who delivered our food was very present.

Excited to place an order at a local restaurant. The portion was MINISCULE and I’m accustomed to Japanese food. It was cold and one of the dishes was wrong and also had no dressing. I called to discuss and the owner wouldn’t listen to me and kept talking over me. I said id like a refund on the incorrect item and he refused! He Said it would leave him out of pocket and hung up!!! I never leave reviews but was in shock and speechless! I’ve wasted £30 and had to bin it. I was actually warned off this place by numerous people but thought I’d try it. Clearly lots of fake positive reviews on here

The rudest owner. We were sent the wrong order ( which was cold) and complained and told they wouldn’t refund as they would be out of pocket! What about me £30 down with inedible food! The owner shouted and hung up on me. I’m IN Utter shock and disbelief. I was so excited to be near a Japanese restaurant and to support local business too. Huge disappointment

We ordered twice and definitely we will order again and again and again.... Delicious food, highly recommended! Hamachi Usuzukuri and Gyu no Tataki are exceptional!!! Prawn tempura Temaki is amazing!

Had a takeaway from here this evening and the sushi was fantastic! Really fresh, brilliant quality sushi at a reasonable price. Will be coming to dine in as soon as we are able to again.
