The Indian food here was fantastic. I liked the butter chicken and the Indian breads. The desserts were also nice and tasty. Fast and friendly service.

Ordered kebab the donner meat was burnt on everyone's meals. Next morning all 4 of us didn't feel well. Spend the extra money and use Orkney best Kebab

Not an authentic experience and some dishes not even properly prepared. Had things returned, replacements were not much better standard. Will not return there...

Pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food, the staff were nice and the food was served quickly. Spotless Clean and simple decor ,Will definitely be back.

The food is fantastic, but every now and again they use tomato purèe paste as a pizza base and it completely ruins it.

Cruel, the waiter gave my mother a hot plate even though he knew the plate was hot. I got a burnt frozen pizza, my father didn't get his main course, the waiter was unfriendly. It's completely overpriced. JUST BAD, NEVER EVER EAT HERE

Can't beat the Lamb Kashmir absolute top job

Ordered delivery 10:50pm on the app and it was accepted stating delivery would be at 11:50, with the restaurant closing at 12:00. At 11:50 we call to make sure they could find the house and they inform us they will not be delivering our food. With nothing else open we didn't have any dinner because of this. The next night we order on the app and send someone to collect. Everyone described the food as 'watered down' and 'bland'. Chicken was extremely dry and bland and the curry tasted very watery as if none of the water was cooked off. For £65 for four people, the bar for the bare minimum was miles above the state of this Indian.

Probably never a good idea to order pizza from an Indian restaurant but it was on the menu! It arrived burnt black on the crusts and 1/2 the cheese was burnt the tomato base was so thick and a lurid red I've no idea what it was made from,my children thought maybe beetroot.bi comment from the owner when I mentioned this. My curry was ok apart from finding a slice of lemon in it! Nice helpful waitress was the only good point

Food was good but could have been seasoned better. The staff were very friendly.

Enjoyed a tasty dinner with the family. The dip selection accompanying our poppadoms was great. Nice buttery naan bread. Recommend the cauliflower bhaji. Kids enjoyed the chicken korma followed by vanilla ice cream. Tandoori lamb was nice. Can bring your own bottle.

Very small place. You had to squeeze through tables to get in, I'm not sure if it is like that all the time or if it was because there was a party of 20 eating in. But the food was top notch. Lovely. And staff very nice and friendly

Politely asked for the pizza to be left in the oven for a few minutes extra, opened the box to see an anaemic pile of cheese, some of which tastes off and it was barely warm despite arriving to collect at the agreed upon time. Doesn't matter who owns the place, it's often a waste of money. If you use your phone to order, they will then use it to spam text you about getting a takeaway.

The service was unsatisfactory. They couldn't accommodate for additional naan , this is making us head to another restaurant in the proximity. ( reasoned that they have more orders but kept on accepting new guests n their orders ) bit lame reason to accept. Food didn't taste authentic. Will not recommend it to others or return.

We eat here on Monday 27th evening. Starters where only ok, waited 40 minutes after starter for main course. Main courses were poor, Lamb Curry very little taste, mushroom bunah was ok.

Food was different but good. Service was very disappointing. The server was impatient and unhelpful - almost rude when asked for clarification of some menu items. I wouldn't return.

Visited here as a group of eight as a last minute booking and was surprised to get a table but later realised why we were able to get a table. The waiting staff were very friendly and polite, so far so good. I ordered the chicken shashlik which came with a plain curry sauce and salad, pilau rice and a peshwari nan. Apart from the rice the meal was cold and the chicken covered in a thick red dye was rubbery and tasteless. One of the party ordered king prawn shaslik which didn’t arrive, when he asked why the staff realised they had given it to another member of our party who had asked for chicken, they tried to give him the half eaten dish but he insisted they replace it with fresh, two minutes later the dish came back hot and steaming which was obvious that they had reheated the remaining food in a microwave and put it on a clean plate. As everyone had different quantities of food we asked to pay separately but was refused, the staff divided the bill by eight which meant I paid £24 instead of £18.35. Not a place I would return to or recommend.

The waitress was very nice and really promoted the food, so we ordered on her recommendation, all the food was very sweet with no flavors of India in sight, especially the tandoori chichen, precooked chopped into cubes and covered in red dye with no flavor, I would not recommend this restaurant to my worst enemy.

After reading recent reviews, four of us went to dinner at this restaurant and were very disappointed with the quality of the food. It didn''t resemble normal Indian food (our group has eaten Indian extensively around the world including India) as the spicing was all wrong and every dish was full of sugar. Very disappointing.

Went on Wednesday for their value deal which was good - overall a really good experience , short wait for table, great service, stand out was saag aloo! Really impressed Thing to make note - Wednesday deal didn’t offer as many interesting vegetarian options, so ended up ordering from main menu

Very nice Indian food. Very friendly staff, very affordable. Even more so if you bring your own beer, which you apparently can. We came in without reservation, but they squeezed us in regardless. Loved the food.

We came here for a family meal, with two small children and were well looked after. We had a variety of dishes and all enjoyed what we had. Will definitely be back.

I was in Kirkwall for work and needed a place to eat on the night when I arrived. The Indian Garden is a good, reliable Indian restaurant serving all the well-known favourites. I had a very good supper and would be happy to eat here again. Located just a short walk from the heart of the town centre.

Some negative reviewers may have unrealistic expectations. As vegetarians, there was a wide range of choice of dishes. Dishes were tasty but quite rich (couldn't finish one). Onion bhajis and poppadoms to start were very good. Pickle tray nice too. BYO alcohol, no corkage. Not expensive at all so exceeded our expectations. Staff attentive. Some atmosphere on a Sunday night in April.

Takeaway. I had chicken tikka garlic chilli with a garlic naan and onion bhajia. The bhajia were very obviously made in advance then reheated - probably in a microwave - so were soggy outside and rubbery inside. Many Indian places do this but they're not that difficult to make fresh. Flavour profile ok. The garlic naan was standard fare. The curry had sliced garlic and onions, a nice touch. The flavour profile was a bit basic. The chicken tikka was obviously cooked in advance then reheated in the sauce, rather than freshly made in the tandoor. Bit of a stale taste which is unacceptable. Again, many places do this and, again, it's not that hard to do tikka fresh. Overall from me, the laziness and lack of attention to detail earns two stars. Sub-par, almost "just okay". Doubt I'll go back. Update to this review - March 2024. Initial review above from 2023. We ordered 2 pizzas for takeaway (despite saying in my last review I probably wouldn't go back). Very poor effort. Can't tell if the dough made on premises but not a good dough, very soggy. Far too much greasey cheese and pizza sauce from a can. All very lazy. Mushrooms seemed fresh but surely that's a given.

Being an Indian I can definitely say that's not what Indian food taste like. It was just color and weird taste and smelled quite old. They just say Indian food. But nothing matched with India. I can bet they are fooling with that extended menu. Way disappointed with the service.

Got a takeaway last night for Mothers Day and it was truly awful. The meal was stone cold (delivery should take 5 minutes) The lamb in the lamb tikka was so tough it was inedible, the mixed pakora was greasy and lacking any flavour. Lamb vindaloo and lamb jalfrezi were both lacking heat and flavour, like the blandest lamb stew, the Nan was doughy and seriously undercooked, the whole lot went in the bin. Over £50 plus £5 delivery. A reminder why I don’t order takeaways or eat out in Orkney!

Very good food and nice atmosphere, we visited on a Wednesday when they have fixed menu option for £13.95 so good value as well.

🚨AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS! THE WORST CURRY IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!! 🚨 As a South Asian myself, i am extremely disappointed with this so called "curry". I ordered a Chicken Mahkani (an incredibly simple and easy to make curry) and i received a tub with chicken tikka bits and what looks like any old sauce flung on top of it.... and to top it all off... MOZZARELLA CHEESE on top of the curry!?!?! Never in all my life have i seen such nonsense from an "authentic indian restaurant". This place would be laughed at in other parts of the country! Ignore all previous reviews stating this establishment does good food, it is simply not true! Genuinely better off with a microwave meal from Tesco. Dont waste your time or your money on this place, it should be shut down immediately.

Used this for takeaway, was not sure how it was going to be as they have a very mixed menu. The Indian menu was fantastic, food was hot and there was plenty of it.

Nice atmosphere, easy to relax into. The waiter had a bit of a job doing anything, but to be fair he was new. The portions were good, and was value for money ,but masala was sweet and had coconut in it and not enough spice,almost a sweet and sour fusion, not an Indian curry

Ordered a pizza a couple weeks ago. It was cold when it arrived but also their app says free delivery and its not. I got a knock at the door and there's a taxi driver standing holding my pizza saying £5 please! What an absolute con. Bunch of scammers!!!

Having eaten here many times in the past and been very satisfied, we decided to get a takeaway delivered, Delivery took a very long time and the food was Luke warm at best when we received it, everything was swimming in a greasy oily mess. Very disappointed after having so many great meals here in the past. Maybe just a bad night? hopefully!

I don't order from here very often but I've never been disappointed. The passanda and coconut rice are divine, the chicken just melts in your mouth. I also love their online ordering, easy to navigate and pay. Highly recommend

I did look at the reviews before ordering some pizzas for a kids movie night, but realised that the majority or people had left reviews for curry. I kid you not, the Tesco value pizzas would have been better than these. The base was flat as a pancake, the tomato sauce has red food colouring and sugar added and the cheese was sliding off the flat base. They didn't use a mozzarella mix, it tasted more like a cheddar. Honestly, I've never seen 10 kids faces drop when I opened the boxes at home. I wouldn't order pizzas from here again. Terrible.

Staff was friendly and service was quick. Atmosphere was average. Now to the food. Oh boy. This is the weirdest "Indian" food I've ever tasted. It was so sweet!! And was just coconut. The tikka masala was red, so red, but couldn't taste one tomato and did not have a yogurt base. Some pieces of paneer were overcooked resulting in rubbery edges. Asked for medium spicy and there was zero hint of any spice whatsoever. The korma was the right color, but only tasted of coconut. Not savory at all. Lamb was cooked find. Meat samosas were flavorless. Naan and rice was fine. I read some of the other reviews...curious to see if the owner tells me I'm wrong. Sorry, but I've had Indian food around the world. Heck, I am Indian. This is....a travesty. Maybe change it to Indian inspired. Not to be mean, but can only guess the high ratings are from folks inexperienced with actual Indian food.

First meal in Scotland. This was one of the few places open on Sunday at 5pm. Even though the place says it is Indian, it is actually more akin to Bangladeshi food. I wasn't quite sure of the etiquette or how to order or what I was ordering, so I chose aloo gobi. That's not what I got though. I got a dish loaded with vegetables like zucchini and snap peas that taste like nothing in the United States. It was serendipity at its finest and unbelievably fresh. My wife had food loaded with garlic and it was amazing. One of my head the naab was some of the best I ever had. Rich, fresh, full of flavor. 100% recommend.

Huge menu just the dishes didn’t seem too fresh. And maybe that’s the problem with the long menu, you lose quality. Chutneys were very sugary, quite unauthentic experience. Tasty naan. Sadly just 2 stars

Listen the food is top tier and by far the best indian and takeaway place in orkney. My only concerns are about the pizza. They used to be really well made but recently they’ve been a bit slap dash. Like the toppings, cheese and sauce proportions haven’t been great. More care and attention is needed but the ingredients are great.

We visited Orkney for our Wedding Anniversary. We booked the Indian Garden for our special dinner and we weren’t disappointed. We had a mixed pakora to start. For the main course, I had Garlic Chilli Chicken and my wife had the “Tiger Chicken” both of which were listed as specialities. The restaurant isn’t licensed so we took our own wine. There was no corkage charge. The restaurant doesn’t look much from the outside but the interior is very nice and the staff were very attentive and helpful without hurrying us.

We love indian food and while travelling in Great Britain we tried to visit a lot of indian restaurants every year. The "Indian Garden" in Kirkwall is one of the best restaurants! Every dish is cooked perfectly and very delicious. And everyone is very friendly, the service is amazing. We will come back!

Ordered a few curry dishes but was completely unhappy with the quality of the food, after voicing my concerns to the owner he was completely ride and dismissive of our concerns and told us to leave if we weren't happy. I'm definitely gonna avoid the place after that insult. Never been disrespected that much in my life.

Not entirely sure what cuisine the food was supposed to represent but it most certainly wasn't indian food. The food was about as authentic as the indian ready meals sold at tesco. It somehow managed to vacate my body faster then it entered. Not my finest dining experience.

A very poor representation of indian food, it's as if they were playing chinese whispers with the recipes. Would not recommend the place.

recently visited an Indian restaurant in my neighborhood with high hopes of enjoying a delicious and authentic culinary experience. Unfortunately, my visit turned out to be quite disappointing, leaving me with a sour taste in my mouth. First and foremost, the service was extremely slow and inattentive. Despite the restaurant not being particularly crowded, it took an eternity for the waitstaff to acknowledge our presence and take our orders. Throughout the entire meal, it felt like we were being completely ignored, with our requests for water refills and additional condiments going unnoticed. The lack of basic courtesy and attentiveness was a major letdown. Moving on to the food itself, it was far from the authentic and flavorful experience I was hoping for. The appetizers lacked the distinctive spices and intricate flavors that are characteristic of Indian cuisine. The samosas were greasy and lacked the crispy texture they should have had, while the chicken tikka lacked tenderness and tasted bland. It seemed as though the kitchen had taken shortcuts and failed to put in the effort required to create well-executed dishes. The main courses were equally underwhelming. The butter chicken, a popular Indian dish, was disappointingly watery, lacking the creamy texture and rich flavors I had anticipated. The biryani was undercooked and lacked the aromatic blend of spices that make it a delight to eat. The portions were also smaller than expected, especially considering the relatively high prices on the menu. Moreover, the restaurant's ambiance was nothing to write home about. The decor felt outdated, and the overall cleanliness left much to be desired. The lack of attention to detail in maintaining a pleasant dining environment added to the overall disappointment of the experience. Given the slow service, lackluster food quality, and subpar ambiance, I cannot recommend this Indian restaurant to others. It fell far short of delivering the authentic and enjoyable experience I had hoped for. There are certainly better options available in the area that offer superior service and more flavorful Indian cuisine.

The food is ok, but watch when collecting as the 10% isn't always taken off when ordering £20. I did question the guy on collection but he insisted it was, upon checking again it definitely wasn't. It's also not the 1st time that's happened.

Great meal for four of us. We went on Wednesday night when there is a special offer on. The food was fresh, hot and spicy with great service. You can bring your own alcohol or they serve soft drinks. Good for families too.

My friend and I had eaten late on in the day so couldn’t manage dinner at “dinner time”, by the time we were hungry a lot of the restaurants were closed, which was when I thought about the Indian garden. Don’t think I’ve been so grateful for a spur of the moment meal in my life. Upon entry I apologised because it was so late (almost 9pm) and asked if there was a chance we could sit in. There were no tables available but the staff member cleaned a larger table and split it off for the two of us, grabbing menus and having us sat within a few minutes. My Lamb Bhuna was absolutely delicious, the Tikka (I think? Maybe Korma) was also left with a glowing review. Thank you so much for a lovely evening, will be back again soon

Takeaway. Our main dishes were more akin to chicken stew, I think that they forgot to include the spices. Similarly the pilau rice. The starters were fine, as were the nan breads. I cannot recommend this place.

Online ordering app was easy to use, ready in 25 mins, no waiting when went to collect. Food was great, garlic chilli chicken and a chicken tikka dhansak, great sized portions. Would highly recommend. Eat In restaurant also looked great.

The Kebab i bought wasn't nice .they reheated the meat which made it like leather

typical non licensed indian cafe. first impression was poor as the young server had poor english skills. made it difficult to order and the older server stepped in. as a canadian with limited experience with indian food at home, the food was good and tasty...

The food was excellent for everyone at the table, with great naan and curry. The restaurant early evening was pretty empty though which wasn't the best sign. Though the service was good. Not amazingly kid friendly, not even having cups that were smaller and easier...

If you are an Indian looking for good Indian food in Kirkwall - AVOID this place. Guess they don't seat indians (I am an Indian) in the main section. Even though the place wasn't half full - he made me sit in a dark corner behind the bar. Out of sight of all the other 'patrons'. And the street. Maybe we are bad branding. Said there were reservations for the other tables. When I asked how they could reserve a specific table - he pretended not to understand English. When I asked again if that was a no-indian section, he said "you don't like it here so leave" I was so disgusted but hungry. So had him pack up my food to go. Food is mediocre. Not sure who is raving about the food on reviews here. They've obviously never had even decent Indian food in NYC or London or Mumbai!!

Quite disappointing. I had duck tikka masala more because the choice seemed limited. My meal was too sweet. My husband had bhuna lamb - he asked for it as it wasn’t on the menu. It was just ok.
