Went for a couple of pints at lunch time, and had a lovely time. Delightful bartender, who was friendly, helpful and efficient. Good selection of real ales and craft. Comfortable and clean environment with a nice atmosphere, when we went. We're not local, but hope to go back for a curry one evening, as the menu looked great.

With a group of friends we have been lunching at this pub for a number of years but since they were taken over things have changed, We went up to the bar as usual to order our lunch but it took ages before the food arrived. The waitress was very surly and didn't even acknowledge me when I asked if we could have a couple of more drinks, Once she had delivered all our meals I asked if she had heard my order for more drinks and she said she had. 20 minutes later I went to the bar myself and re-ordered the drinks. A different waitress who has always been pleasant, smiled and took the order and said she would bring them over to us. The surly waitress started collecting our plates before we had all finished eating but no one came to ask if everything was alright or whether we wanted anything else. We eventually went up to the bar to get the dessert menus and order some coffees but were told the coffee machine was being cleaned so they couldn't serve coffee. At that point we had had enough so again went to the bar to order the bill and then left to get coffee and cakes elsewhere. We are seriously thinking about not going back there.

Visited today for lunch with a friend. A nice peaceful place, unlike places in the high street where people were shouting at each other. Definitely not relaxing when you can’t hear each other talk. This place was totally different. Very relaxed vibe. Staff were polite and efficient, the cider was nicely chilled and the halloumi and pepper burger very tasty. The pub was clean and tidy, as were the toilets. All in all a great place for a quiet lunch.

Food here has historically been sub optimal, raw chips and soggy sarnies etc but today I was served a chicken sandwich with meat that was somehow both rock hard and totally raw in the middle at the same time. Microwave defrosting mishap perhaps? Complained and was offered a reacement sandwich be cooked 'for free'. Utterly awful and not particularly cheap. Stick to drinks.

Probably the worst pub meal I have ever experienced. Tiny portions, chips undercooked, vegetables overcooked - worse than school dinners! They need to seriously up their game and give their customers decent value.

Just got home from Sunday lunch at The Hutton Junction. My wife and I both enjoyed roast rump of lamb, roast potatoes, a good selection of veggies, thick meat gravy and as a nice extra a Yorkshire pudding. Service was prompt and cordial with Chloe taking our order and Donna bringing to our table. We managed to leave some room for desert-chocolate fudge cake with ice cream while my wife had apple and gooseberry crumble and custard. Traditional fare well cooked by chef Paul Goodman

I arranged for a group of old work colleagues to get together here. I often arrange drinks and then on to a restaurant but after having drinks here the last time, we were so impressed with Jay and the staff trying to find us chairs so we could sit together and them making sure we were having a good time, we thought we’d eat there too this time. Nothing disappointed and we have booked to do the same thing again in a few months. Jay was his usual charming and helpful self and his team are a credit to him. The drinks flowed well and the food was really great tasty pub grub. Much better than the normal pub offerings and large portions too. The pies are lush. Definitely worth the money and the trip. If we’d have known earlier what a genuinely great place this was, we’d have booked earlier. Highly recommend for drinks, food and atmosphere. If you haven’t been, give it a try.

This was our 5th visit to The Hutton Junction. We’ve had some lovely Sunday roasts here so thought we would invite friends to join us. We ordered 4 roast beef, 1 childs chicken and 1 Roast lamb. The beef was very chewy and some bits un edible. My lamb was very hard and over cooked. It was meant to be a shoulder of lamb, it was not! When the waitress came over with our veg (very little of it) I asked if I may change my lamb to a chicken dinner as it was so hard. She was very nice and changed it for me. When she came with my new dinner I then had no veg. She quickly got my fresh veg. All of our Yorkshire puddings were burnt and didn’t actually taste of anything. When our bill arrived they had left the lamb on the bill at £14.95! Again when the waitress came over I told her and she had this taken off for us. We was so disappointed as we’ve had some really lovely home cooked Sunday dinners in here and had raved about it to our friends! I even asked the young lad who was also waiting if the chef has changed in here from a few weeks ago? He said no it’s the same chef/cook. Well all we can say is we won’t be returning. It would be a gamble now as to whether we would get a good or very bad dinner. Not worth the risk. Such a shame as it’s nice and local for us and I’ve been telling all my fiends how good it is. I won’t be doing that anymore.

We ate in this pub/restaurant yesterday evening and were very disappointed.Firstly the music playing was loud, intrusive and had a persistent beat.It was wholly inappropriate for the setting and type of clientele. We did ask the waitress to turn it down and she did but commented it was the choice of the bar staff who were about 20 years younger than the average customer! We have eaten here many times before but on this occasion our choices were very disappointing. Our chips were inedible,They were cold and rock hard. The vegetables were tasteless and watery. I had a Pinot Grigio which is from a tap and was unpleasant.I then asked for a white wine which was not on tap and had a Sauvignon from a bottle but that didn’t taste like Sauvignon and a suspect it was a cheap generic wine. I will not be visiting again!

A great pub that has changed ownership recently. The beer is good and changes regularily, they have their own bitter caled 'Hutton', recommended. Tha Manager Jay is always friendly and helpful as are all the staff. Good decor with a nice courtyard behind and parking, although it is limited. Have not eaten there since the change in Management but there are always people eating there. Would recommend

We have been regular visitors to this pub over the last few years and always found it pleasant enough. Food and ambiance has always been reasonable and service has been good. However, the pub appears to have come under new management in recent months and standards have fallen. Although the average age in the pub is probably about 40 on a typical evening they have started playing rap type music loudly and intrusively, which totally spoils the experience, and a new menu and the food served is inferior to what was served in the past. When I asked the barmaid whether she could either change or turn down the volume of the music, she responded very pleasantly and did turn it down. However, it was still loud enough to spoil our evening inhibit conversation and spoilt the experience and the meal - loud club type music that would have been most unlikely to appeal to the clientele given the age range. When I asked who chose the music the pleasant barmaid stated that the staff did. All the staff appeared to me to be under 25 and it seemed strange that music was being chosen by young staff in accordance with their own tastes for loud rap etc rather than choosing music that might appeal to the older clientele. When I pointed this out the pleasant bar maid did change the music to songs that that can appeal across the generations but the evening was spoilt by then and we would be unlikely to return.

If you want food that does not resemble its description, served up one by one with an interval between so that the first ones served went cold and then another gap for the vegetables to reach the table. I’ve written a couple of reviews over the years about this pub, the first was good saying nice atmosphere, friendly staff and good food. The second however, not so complimentary. The landlady was so rude to pretty much everyone I called her the wicked witch of the west (and by all accounts wasn’t the only person who thought so) we had heard that it had changed ownership and decided to give it another try - so glad we did. The wicked witch has finally gone, some of the old staff are back and are lovely, the food is much better and the atmosphere is back to how it was. Amazing how one person (and unbelievably the landlady) can bring a pub down.

This pub has now become our local! Totally unpretentious serving a good selection of beers and an interesting wine list. The home cooked food is great with a specials board that is constantly changing. All served with a smile by the friendly staff. Don't think the decor has changed much since the eighties but this is not a criticism! There is pretty courtyard at the back with a water feature and an area that's covered by a grapevine where you can sit and relax in the summertime. It gets pretty busy at certain times due to it's proximity to the station and commuters dropping in on their way home. The landlady is a bit of a dragon so loses one star for that reason!

Struggle to find a local gastro pub that had space for five with just two hours notice on a Sunday afternoon. Booked that read some mixed reviews! So with some trepidation we entered the pub, straight away the bar staff were really nice and helpful, we ere shown to our table where we all ordered the Sunday Roast, two pork , two beef and one chicken. Food was excellent, loads of beef on my plate and struggled to finish it. Great choice of puddings, I plumped for the crumble with my signature tune of 'two scoops' of ice cream. £90 for five of us including drinks so well worth it. Again the waitress service was second to none.

Well we should have taken the hint from the lack of customers - but we didn't, what a mistake! The service was very poor, and we seemed to be forgotten about, I had to go and find staff whenever we wanted service and we could easily have walked out without paying the bill as no-one was around to get the bill. The food was not great at all, the kid's pizzas were just 'Yuk' - tomato puree and very strong mature cheddar (enough said). My steak was full of gristle and had no flavour, other family members meals were not a great deal better, this was so disappointing as my Dad was down from Yorkshire to take us and his grandchildren out for a lovely Sunday meal. Needless to say we will not be returning - oh, one good thing the kid's chips came in bowls to make it easier for them to eat from.

Met my friend here on a Wednesday evening as Shenfield was convenient for both of us to travel home by train without driving. A two minute walk from Shenfield station (head off under the bridge and away from the High Street)Inside, the pub has a traditional feel with a wide selection of beers and ciders. We sat outside in a small but pleasant seating area (I think the term 'garden' might be going too far).We both ordered the Steak & Ale pie and chips. The pie was a full pie (not just a pastry top), large, full of large pieces of steak. The chips were large chunky chips (almost verging on potato wedges). There was also a plate of fresh vegetables for us to share and a gravy boat. I thought the food was very good quality and very good value for £11.95.By 9pm, the evening had turned very cool, so we sat inside for one last drink.Toilets were a little old-fashioned with a temperamental hand drier, but if that is the only negative comment so what? Will definitely return - worth a stop off from the train from London back to Billericay after work.

I needed a convenient Restaurant/Pub near Shenfield station to catch up with a work colleague who does not live in the area. Having booked a table, over the phone 2 days before, there were no issues upon arrival, in fact as there were a couple of spare tables we were offered a choice of where to sit. Drinks order was taken, and these were received very quickly. The menu has plenty of variation and once orders were placed the meals also arrived quickly. The Liver and Bacon was extremely good, my colleague had Chilli Con carne and she also commented on the meal quality. Service was provided efficiently and courteously and the overall evening was very reasonably priced. This is not a five star review as the choice of real Ale was slightly limited, a couple of the beers I preferred had 'finished' (although reasonable replacements were available) plus the lighting is a bit bright, some lower lighting would help the overall atmosphere. However, I believe I have now found a new venue for eating out and would recommend giving it a go if you like quality Pub Food with a good selection of Ales and Wines.

Whoever is running this place should be sacked! The evening started ok with 4 or 5 real ales but already 2 were gone - as the evening wore on more ales ran out then only 2 were left IPA and Abbott - 3 gentlemen near my table ordered some more wine only to be told they had that they last bottle - no sign of an apology from the bar staff just a blunt "we have run out"Did they not expect people to drink on a Friday night?? Do they not order any ales or wines - Total mismanagement - isnt a pub meant to provide those things? Perhaps they should pay their cellar bill or sell up to McDonalds!! Wont be going back - Worst pub in Essex!!

I meet a friend here for a few drinks and a bite to eat. It is within walking distance from Shenfield train station so a logical place to meet if you are using public transport. The ales and Guinness are perfectly acceptable and the food menu has lots of specials and a bar menu too. I was tempted by the calves liver and bacon but decided to go for a bacon cheeseburger instead. It was a decent sized juicy burger accompanied by fries and a salad. So why only a three rating you may be asking? The reason is the price of the food. I was tempted by the calves liver, but not at £14.45. Even the burger weighed in at just over a tenner. The trouble is this is a boozer that sells food and not a restaurant so I think their prices should reflect this. If the menu had been 20%-25% cheaper I would have no problem giving them a rating of four.

Beer well looked after, knowledgable staff, good well priced food, real fires in winter. And a landlady and landlord who are proper characters. Everything you want in a pub.

first time here, maybe just the one visit, might give it another go, will have to see. popped in here for a quick bite before an engagement on a recommendation for good pub grub. it was busy, lots of suits from the station, few family's at the table around the busy bar - funny how they have a big dinning area but no one used it! So all were crammed in the bar. Didn't really like sitting there so close to all at the bar whilst they watch you eat! There were only two staff on and it took a while to get served, took even longer to order food, but the food didn't take that long which was good. Food was a little higher than most pubs and the food was nice but average.Car park was also small and has a massive pot hole in the middle, which was difficult to get round too.Lastly I didn't like that to run a tab for the food and drink they took your card off you for behind the bar - security reasons here that this sort of thing should not be happing anymore.

I visited with friends and family recently for our semi-regular Sunday pub club. I had the roast beef, which was well-cooked and tasty. The vegetables were also cooked well, which is refreshing as this is so often done wrong! Would definitely visit again.

Not a pleasant experience when I asked if I could charge my phone, told how much her electricity bill was and well OK if you must. How she gets any business is a mystery. Pubs are not cheap these days and given you pay 4 fold on a pint they should be grateful for any business. In future will go and drink in a place that allows me to use a plug. Avoid this rude place.

We visited the Hutton Junction again (we do use it quite regularly as a preferred local dining venue as it is walking distance for us) for a small family celebration. We reserved a table for 12 people and everyone says how good the service and food was. Our parents greatly enjoyed it (which was the main priority) and they said they would certainly recommend it to anybody. We would like to mention Rosie in particular as she was our main server. She was friendly and very efficient and made every effort to make sure the celebration went well. Nothing seemed to much for her. We would also like to mention Lynn and the rest of the staff who either served us or prepared the food. As usual the food was of a good standard (thanks must go to the chef who does great work behind the scenes) and all served at the same time which can be difficult for a relatively small venue serving a party of 12. We will certainly be going again, if only to sample more of the varied guest beers and grab a bite to eat from a varied menu. Once again for making sure the parents and their guests had a great experience. In addition we recently visited for lunch with a Vegetarian and she had the Balti vegetables which she said was the best thing she has eaten for or a long time.

We booked a table for lunch on Saturday. The pub was quiet but we were given a nice table. The menu is extensive and we opted for a ham ploughmans and the steak and ale pie. I often choose ploughmans lunches but this was one of the best I have ever had. Loads of variety of pickles, really good ham, nice warm bread and interesting salad. The steak and ale pie was really good and came with hot chips and vegetables and lovely cauliflower cheese. The service was excellent and friendly and I will certainly recommend the Hutton and their food. It's also a really nice pub (except for the football on the telly - but you can't have everything). I have been going there for over 30 years (in fact I worked there once) but it is now at its very best. Well done the owners/management and the team.

Always a friendly atmosphere and friendly and helpful staff. There is a surprisingly very good chef at work here. The special of king prawn jalfesi was superb but enhanced brilliantly with the addition of a fresh lemon to bring out the flavours of the shellfish and crispy veg in the sauce. Very reasonable prices too.

We tend to go here for lunch with friends & stay til late evening!!! Good home style cooking with a good selection of specials. Staff are very friendly & although there are a lot of regulars (not surprising because of the nice atmosphere) it is not a clicky pub. Mixed group of ages which makes it more interesting (I like to people watch!) worth a visit

The place is okay, staff were lovely and the price was excellent - but unfortunately the food was horrible. The roast potatoes were hard and hardly cooked and the veg had certainly seen better days. a real shame as it's local and easy to get to. It must have been bad as we didn't even bother to glance at the desert menu!

Have been in and out of this Pub over the years with a few owners / managers. Went there for an evening and decided to have a try of the menu. I had tasty sounding Chick n Mushroom Pie and the GF had Salmon. The pie was soggy to say the least, not what I expected and little disappointed. I opened a tab behind the bar with a card and when it came to pay, I quickly checked the bill and noticed that additional drinks had been added. I pointed this out to the barmaid who never checked anything but just refunded me in cash for the 2 drinks. Never questioned me at all or checked. Mistake? maybe? Will not rush back..

We love this place, the food is good and well priced, and we regularly head there after work for a drink and a bite to eat. The staff are friendly enough towards us now having visited many times, but it's not the friendliest of places which is a shame as that's my top wish from a local.

We went there on the advice of our guest. We will be going back. The staff were very friendly and attentive - definitely not over zealous. The food was delicious and with pastry like that it has to be homemade and is certainly not microwaved! It is not "cheap" pub food by any means. The menu is extensive and there is plenty of choice. There was also a specials board which had a good selection.

I was impressed with just how big the menu is, the selection is massive for a pub. Also, there is a big specials board. The prices are very competitive and the food very good. The pies are delicious. There is also a decent wine list, but I feel prices are leaning towards the expensive side for what the wines are. An all round decent local venue, that seems to be quite popular. Worth a visit.

Its great to have a pub which is walking distance from home. The food is good quality for the price and there is a always wide choice, so something for everyone. They have a small garden at the back as well. A great pub.

As locals and also using the nearby station regularly, we have used the Hutton on and off over the years. My last visit was a year or more ago, and I wont go back there for this reason... Four of us were eating there on a Friday evening after work. We complained to the barmaid that our side dishes of veg were luke warm, and she arranged for them to be re-heated. I don't mind that, it's what I would have done at home. Me and one of our party had salmon, which I complained to the barmaid was under cooked, at which she said she would bring the land-lady. When the land lady came over she disputed most strongly that the fish was under cooked, even though she had prodded it over and over with my fork and it was evidently still very wet. As I put up my argument she FINALLY agreed to take it back to the kitchen. I don't know what she did with it out there, but when she returned she ceremoniously put it back on the table in front of me, then put the back of her hand all over the vegetables in the side dish (she had obviously heard that we had complained about the veg not being hot), then she walked away from the table! Having maulled our food she still expected us to eat it!!!!!Prior to that visit, on another occaision we attended a St Patrick's night celebration in the restaurant. The food was mediocre. The restaurant was decorated with paraphenalia which had the date of two years previous all over it - attention to detail, please!!I haven't been in there for over a year, and I will not as long as it remains under the same management.

The Hutton Junction is our local pub, and it is a real pleasure to visit there. Since the present owners have taken over and completely refurbished the premises, it has become a very attractive and friendly place to spend time in. The interior is comfortable with lots of seating , and with a warm, inviting atmosphere. The menu, should you wish to eat there, is extensive , and includes an all day brunch, plus a selection of delicious coffees- something for everyone. Special events are regularly laid on to entice the customer in- the beer garden is really pretty, having been fitted out with plenty of chairs, tables, hanging baskets, even vines trailing grapes that look ripe for the picking! A real oasis of calm at the back of what is literally one of the busiest stretches of road in the town. Highly recommended.

Arranged a Burns Night in the Hutton Junction restaurant with some friends. The Piper outside welcomed us in and the restaurant was decorated well in a scottish theme. Set menu was scottish themed again but with a good choice of food. Scottish smoked salmon, haggis stuffed chicken breast and steaks in whisky sauces down very well. Deserts were whisky based also.Returned this saturday with friends. Lovely welcome. Had scallops which, if being picky were slightly overdone. Main course was sole with a fennel sauce with plenty of fresh veg. Sauce was slightly too heavy but fish cooked well. Friends had steak cooked exactly as required. Would go back.

My wife and I often drink coffee in various Costas and enjoy them. We have decaf coffee and usually coconut milk latte. We went to the Costa in Shenfield and ordered the above. It was so weak it was like drinking hot milk. My wife complained and the server very kindly put an extra shot of coffee in each cup, but not much difference. £8 wasted.
