Extremely Disappointed – A Terrible Experience at Hutong I’ve been to Hutong multiple times and had always enjoyed it, but my recent visit with my girlfriend was, by far, the worst dining experience I’ve had. We had been looking forward to a special evening, and I’m utterly disappointed by how we were treated. When I called to book the table, I made it very clear that we wanted to sit by the window, as it was a special occasion. I was told that we could order from the main menu instead of the set menu (which included beef, a food we don’t eat) as long as we spent the equivalent amount. I confirmed this over the phone and was reassured it wouldn’t be an issue. However, when we arrived, we were immediately given the set menu and told that “this is what you are having.” I explained the situation to the waitress, mentioning the prior conversation, and was met with a rude, dismissive response. She didn’t bother to check with anyone else or offer any sort of assistance. Instead, a manager came over and told us we had to move away from the window because other people were waiting for that table. This felt completely disrespectful, and I was already beginning to feel like we weren’t being valued as customers. After some back-and-forth, I reluctantly agreed to the set menu and asked if we could substitute the beef with something else. I suggested a steamed dim sum or fish dish, which were both cheaper options, but was instead told that the only substitution was chicken wings. I’m sorry, but when you're paying £300+ for dinner, chicken wings aren’t acceptable. It felt like we were being rushed, given no options, and treated like an inconvenience. Finally, after more frustration, the manager came back and said we could indeed order from the main menu, just as I had originally asked. This was exactly what I had requested when we first sat down and what had been confirmed during my initial phone call. I was beyond frustrated by the lack of professionalism and communication. The service was terrible from start to finish. The waitress was rude and unhelpful, and the manager seemed more interested in rushing us out than ensuring we had a pleasant experience. To make matters worse, when I tried to take a photo of my girlfriend on her birthday, I was told not to use the flash as it would disturb other guests. Fair enough, I understood the reasoning, so I refrained. However, over the next hour, I saw other guests using flash photography without being reprimanded, and even the waitstaff were taking flash photos of guests right next to us. This hypocrisy was unbelievable. To top it all off, when I spoke to the staff outside after leaving, they seemed surprised by my complaints, telling me that it’s common knowledge that guests who don’t want the set menu are typically allowed to order from the main menu. So, clearly, this was an issue of bad management and poor training, not a standard practice at Hutong. This experience has been a massive disappointment, and I will not be returning. I felt discriminated against, and frankly, I don’t think this restaurant values its customers. If you’re looking for great service and a memorable experience, I’d strongly recommend you look elsewhere.

Shredded beef was over fried and not edible. Wagu beef was disappointing. We don’t think it was fresh. Overall a disappointing experience

Very surprised! Not to say the least. However amazing views got to say the views are something amazing! But food lets it down, how is that possible? The food is over priced, tasteless and full of chillies not sure why. I would definitely go there to have a drink and enjoy the views but not have food. Hopefully in the future this amazing place will get the balance right to include amazing food too. It is also overpriced.

The customer service was okay, I would’ve expected better service from the maître d’. The food was also okay but not good enough for me to return. All the starters we had and the sharing duck first course were chefs kiss however the second sharing duck course was abysmal! We also ordered spring rolls, which were awful!

An unforgettable evening! My girlfriend and I had the most amazing dinner here. The ambiance was cozy and romantic, perfect for a date night. The food was absolutely divine—every dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel special, ensuring we had everything we needed. Warm friendly welcome. Great table with views. The food on the set menu was nice but some dishes were incredibly oily. The lobster was tasty but the garnish of chilli representing 70% of the dish was overkill.

Impressive restaurant. Perfect location. It’s inside the shard. You have beautiful scenery with delicious meal over here. The appetizer can refill, that’s really great. Even though it cost money to have a meal here, I think it’s worth it! Remember to make a reservation before coming, or you even can’t pass the security downstairs.

Fantastic view with friendly staff

Wouldn’t waste your time. We waited 25+ mins for our table which was booked for 8pm. When our food arrived it was cold. We sent the food back (I’ve never sent anything back in my whole life). The kind waiter then brought out the food again and it was just as cold. The management and staff were very kind and helpful however the food was rubbish and overpriced.

Celebrating my brothers 21st Birthday with the Dynasty Brunch. Location is awesome with a fab window table with panoramic views of central London. Food was excellent and Alex our server was very attentive and helpful.

DO NOT COME FOR BRUNCH So we have been here a few times, the view is really nice, the service is usually on point, the food is overpriced for its taste but at least won’t ruin the vibe if you already have a nice one going on. Oh but that is all comments for the dinner experience. Hutong at brunch-times is a completely different restaurant. First of all, for brunch apparently you only get a restricted brunch menu where you are served with starters that include dishes that feels like packaged/pre-made food plated; mains that only include one vegetarian option which is no where close to being near the level of dish they offer for dinner or fish that is bland like cupboard because they didn’t marinate it before serving; rice or noodles that is equally oily and too salty and desert where “sorbet” just means ice with fruit syrup. There is one upside though, it is not so overly priced anymore: only £60 per person. Oh but if you do want to order something else, you will still have to pay an extra £60 for some lamb. Wait there is more. So although the brunch menu seems reasonably priced, they won’t hesitate to make you feel shit about it. So we asked to take something away because they served a lot of food, and was ruthlessly denied of such option. “You only pay £60 for all of this” they say; “it’s almost like it is free, that is why you can’t take anything away” they say (or something that implies this. It is the most stupid policy I have ever heard, either they are planning on re-serving the leftovers, or I do not understand the purpose of not letting your customers take food away. Also, what is the attitude that as if they are offering us food for free? £60 is at most a reasonable price, for overpriced for a normal restaurant, yet Hutong made it sound like it was a steal and we should be grateful for merely the opportunity. Overall, I won’t recommend Hutong in general because the food even for dinner is just so-so. We held a special place for the restaurant because it was meaningful to us (in a romantic sense). But the hellish brunch experience, thankfully, erased that filter of ours emphatically and we just hope that someone else reading this considering going to Hutong for brunch would take the massage: don’t, it’s not worth it.

The service was really good including the support when booking. Some of the food wasn’t great. Had a bite of gristle instead of chicken which was off putting. Some of the portions in the set menu small.

The restaurant decoration and the expectacular location, the very good service, but the simple food is correct. Also on Saturdays there is only menu possibility, indicate that a person who accompanied me was intolerant to gluten and lactose and all the first dishes had nothing adapted and it was not possible to order card dishes.

Waited 40 minutes for a table we had reserved then we were rushed through courses as we were told the kitchen was closing, in the end we had , starters, main and the duck all on the table , really poor experience and to the be charged £450 for 3 people for this debacle was the straw that broke the camels back. We eat out once or twice a week and I can honestly say this is one of the worst experiences at a supposed high end restaurant we have ever had the misfortune of attending. Most disappointing.

We were at Hutong on 7th Jan for dinner. A special thanks to Mr Rakesh Raut for allocating a table for 6 with a good view by the window which was very comfortable and cosy.The food was excellent and the service too. Looking forward to visit again. Mahesh Vyas

The food was great, we had a lovely experience. The waiter - Francesco was very friendly and helpful. He entertained the kids all through.

I had arrived at 8pm and was waiting for 5 mins as there was no one at reception. I then went to the bar to enquire and was told to wait at the front. The hostess then returned at 8.08pm told me the window view table had been given away as we were very late. So had to wait for another table where the view wasn’t as good. Staters were good, but mains overly spiced sea bass chilli broth and Crab average. Take was too small for the dishes in which the two mains were served. Table side service was fine.

I was at the Hutong for Sunday lunch, actually wanting to try the HT Window experience Lunch menu. Yet when I phoned up to reserve a table, I was unaware of the Hutong's only Festive Dynasty Sunday buffet. The food was enjoyable & appealing. Only unacceptable issue: Hutong's policy was NOT to pack the fried noddles leftovers in a box to take away but obviously prefer to bin it - this seems inconceivable - As a foodie, I am on the go to look at good restaurants, even with 2-3 Michelin stars but have never experienced such a policy as at Hutong. What a shame ! Service : The quality of the service was indeed attentive & friendly. Atmosphere : Elegant design, tasteful presentation

The staff couldn't provide a basic item like cream with the chocolate tart dessert - even though it had been discussed beforehand. However the staff were very helpful and flexible with our timing when things overran as we hadn't seen each other for some time. Thank you.

The view was spectacular, service was great and food was ok. The server did go out of her way to accommodate food allergies and was patient during all of our questions - was just a bit disappointed with the lack of flavor overall, perhaps the dinner menu is better?

First the service was slow and rather unfriendly. It improved a lot later during the dinner and especially when we got a better waiter. It was a nice little detail to put a wish on the wish tree on the west side of the restaurant in the end.

The ambience is beautiful, we ate with a view of Tower Bridge. A vegan menu was pre-ordered, unfortunately this didn't work out, but we still received it. The food was very good, but still not quite according to the price. Cocktails were first class. A service charge of 15% will be charged automatically. Service was nice, but not attentive or particularly friendly. Reordering drinks took a while. We received a little gift for our anniversary. For us it was a harmonious evening, but you can also get it elsewhere for less money.

I’m rather disappointed in my visit to Hutong. Being my first ever visit to the shard me and my partner were extremely exited by the views and the finer dining that to be expected. We are sat on the table in a dark corner furthest away from the window views (unlucky? Or because we were younger than the average visitor). Within 2 minutes of sitting down our starters had been brought out, didn’t have time to take my jacket off before food was on the table. We had a 1 hour 45 time slot (we went on New Year’s Eve so not sure if this is always the case). before even coming close to finishing starters our mains were brought out, my partner and I were quite taken back by the feeling of being rushed when we’ve spent £270 to be there. We decided to ask for a wine menu as there wasn’t one given on the table - this took 10 minutes after asking our waiter twice, it then took a further 15 to get the bottle of wine to our table, we now have about 30 minutes to enjoy our bottle of wine. Before finishing our desert and a single glass of wine we are forced to pay the further bill (£70) for the bottle of wine. We are then told that we need to leave as our table is booked for the next slot. Looking around there were 7 tables and the entire bar (about 10 seats) were completely empty and had been all night, we politely asked if we could potentially move somewhere else to sit and enjoy our wine. We were told by the manager (I assume he was manager) that we have 10-12 minutes of extra time to finish and then we must leave. Just like that the time is up and we are urged again to leave with half off the bottle remaining. We politely asked once again to be moved to the bar as no one had been sat there all night, the manager moves us to the bar but to the furthest seat possible away from the window (a common theme of the night) and we were then watched the entire night until we finished the wine. We stayed for a total of 1 hour 30 longer that our slot (cheeky I know) however not a single table or single bar seat was taken once we had moved to the bar. We were told we couldn’t move tables (an older couple asked and they were moved straight away), we were told we can’t sit at the end closest to the window because it was booked (no one sat there the whole 3 hours 15 minutes we were there). The food was delicious and I’m sure it’s not the waiters or managers fault. But we have spent a total of £340+ to be there just like everyone else has but the rush we felt was very uncomfortable. I will be visiting the shard restaurants again but I doubt I will visit Hutong ever again. Rather disappointing on such a special night for my partner and I.

We were a party of 5 celebrating 1 Wedding Anniversary and 2 Birthdays following a Theatre trip.What a superb way to round our celebration. From the excellent reception to being shown to our table we knew our evening was going to be a special occasion. Our table had stunning views of London at night. Hutong's set menu for the "Window Table Experience" had all the Chef's recommendations.The Sommelier's knowledge and attentive service was very much appreciated. Our table waiters gave excellent service and as requested paced the dishes at a leisurely timing. Looking around Hutong's ambience caters for intimate table for 2 up to party groups. Many thanks to all at Hutong for giving us an excellent and perfect ending to our special day. Brian and Sylvia

The food was incredibly good and the view and ambience were fantastic. The staff was friendly, but there was a lady at reception who rather arrogantly claimed that our reservation was earlier. Even when I showed her the email confirmation, she just said that we had made a reservation from Austria and should have thought about it and taken the time difference into account. I've never heard such nonsense before. Who makes a reservation at a restaurant and thinks, “If I make a reservation at 8, I’ll be there at 7 because it’s an hour earlier”? I reserve exactly the time when I want to go out to eat!!!?? Well, the friendly man next to the lady took care of it and said it was probably a mistake in the system and got us a Tisvh. If the food and the atmosphere weren't so good, I wouldn't go there anymore because of the arrogant and unsympathetic nature of the lady.

Beautiful restaurant, great food and drinks. Not getting a window seat lessens the experience and makes it not worth the cost. The manager was also not very friendly or helpful.

Chair. i was sitting was very uncomfortable We ordered 1/2 waiter sliced a few pieces and rest later he said. When I was waiting remaining of the duck he brought minced duck he says I was disappointed I never seen anything like that Any Chinese restaurant I go people removes the meat from bond and leave everything on the table. How anyone would know what you brought back is the duck they ordered. It could have been anything Very very disappointed. It was not even crispy When I told this to waiter instead of saying something sensible he tells me “something new to taste” Yes we like to try something different that’s why we came to your restaurant but we want to know what we are eating I would. Not recommend anybody or come there myself

I am afraid I will not be visiting this restaurant again. We were a couple who spent £300 for lunch. For that amount the service, food and atmosphere was no better than an ordinary 2* Chinese restaurant. 1. There was no atmosphere, the lighting was non existent, and despite being 1 Jan, the atmosphere was not at all festive. 2. Food- the starters were fine. Ordinary spring rolls and prawn dumplings. Beef strips were tasteless and cold. We could not eat. The mains were inedible. We ordered a scallop dish that turned out to be 3 scallops on an omellette. We ordered noodles and seriously it was a pile of thick boiled pasta noodles. Not a Chinese main dish !!! There was only one chicken option in the dynasty menu and that turned out to be sweet / sour chicken which was no better than a local takeaway!!! All three dishes were so bad, unappetising and tasteless that we left them. 3. Drinks - we did drink 2 cocktails/ wine/ beer. But ~£20 for a glass of wine / beer and £12 for a kids lemonades….. this was wayyy too pricy and worst of all there was a non- existent wine service. No wine menu… Even Ritz doesn’t charge so much for a glass of wine or beer. We were made to wait at bar for 35 mins despite a reservation and despite ordering a 20 pound cocktail, there was no bar nuts or anything served!! Overall we felt this was a rip off, food not only bad but inedible. We had a 4 year old with us. Despite writing in the reservation notes that we willl not order set menu for him, we were charged £40 for him. We didn’t raise it with staff, as we were already so disappointed. But I can’t understand why he was charged !!! He didn’t have anything on the menu . He was not even given dessert. This was the worst experience ever. We were very disappointed. Staff was nice though but we didn’t engage much with staff. No one could see anyone anyway… I would not recommend this place or visit again. Total rip off and awful food, more so for the prices. Even if prices went down, we won’t visit as the food was so bad!! I am sorry I had to write this review but it is true.

I wanted to do something special for my wife for NYE and selected Hutong at the Shard. It was the most expensive NYE menu of all the Shard’s restaurants (i.e. Oblix, AquaShard) but I thought it’d be worth it for the quality of the food, the atmosphere, the panoramic views over London (especially for the fireworks 🎇) and most of all for the memories. On paper, Hutong’s NYE menu is quite spectacular (see photo) offering a diverse selection of Chinese delicacies including lobster, abalone, wagyu beef ribs and Peking duck; which made it hard to resist. On NYE, we arrived just before 10pm and had to queue at Shard ground floor entrance for the security check before heading up to the restaurant on 32nd floor. Happily, the queue flowed smoothly and were in the restaurant a few minutes after arriving. Hutong’s food did not disappoint and (almost) everything was impeccable; especially the wagyu beef bao, Morchella crystal dumplings, aromatic beef ribs, fried lobster, braised abalone, cured scallop and last, but by no means least, the lotus root fried rice (delicious enough to eat on its own). The only let down was the Peking duck, which looked great, but was chewy and dry and would’ve benefited from some sauce for moisture. We ended the meal with a chocolate dessert, which was decent but not at the same level as the savory dishes. The service throughout the evening was excellent too, and all staff we encountered were bending over backwards to make sure my wife and I were enjoying the evening. Around midnight we were politely ushered towards the area of the restaurant with views towards the London Eye in preparation for the main event, which didn’t disappoint either. This was why we were here and we managed to get a spectacular view of the NYE fireworks; mainly around London Eye but could also be seen all around London with the restaurant’s floor to ceiling wall to wall glazing! Ultimately, the high price we paid was worth it to enjoy NYE fireworks in one of the best Chinese restaurants, in one of the most iconic buildings in one of the world’s greatest cities.

Amazing staff, food, drinks and not to mention the view. 10/10 experience all for exceptional value

Our New Year's Eve experience at this restaurant was disappointing and poorly handled. Despite booking early for an anniversary celebration and requesting a west-facing window seat to view the fireworks, the request was ignored without explanation. The front of house staff were unhelpful and rude, refusing to charge a phone and barring access to the west side for the fireworks display, even when we offered to stand at the bar at 23:50. A manager initially allowed us to wait at the bar, but staff continued to harass us a further 2 times to return to our seats. This was very embarrassing. Ultimately, other diners rushed to the west side at 12:59 without resistance, forcing us to stand at the back with a limited view of the fireworks. The experience contradicted the restaurant's promise of a perfect view for the event, and no clear explanation was provided for rejecting the seating request when the manager was asked. This poor handling and lack of accommodation ruined our special evening.

A dining experience with the view from the Shard ! You get to relish your favourite food with a beautiful view of the city lights of London. This experience felt nothing less than heaven ! It’s the best place if you’re looking for a grand celebration of an occasion in your life, or to surprise your beloved ! The food was lovely, great quality and service.

Hutong was a phenomenal experience. From the table side slicing of the roast duck, to the curated cocktails and the spectacular views. Of the variety of dishes, the noodles, green beans and tarot roll stood out.

We had the Dynasty Brunch and was without doubt superb. Every dish tasted great and really good size portions. We were asked a number of times if we wanted any more of the starters. We had the drinks package and rarely seen a more attentive waitress in the amount of times we were asked if we needed another drink. This package was such a good deal. Every member of staff we encountered whilst eating was so friendly and added to the whole experience. I was slightly concerned before as seen a few poor reviews but can not recommend our experience more highly. One suggestion is that although i understand the desire to create an atmosphere maybe the lighting could be turned up a bit as by the end couldn't really see the food! We were there 2.5 hours and was a lovely way to start the year

A beautiful view but a bit disapointing. We came for the NYE brunch and it was very rushed. Quite hard to enjoy the meal when the staff are rushing you off. We were told it was free flowing starters but before we even finished our starters the mains arrived. We sent the mains back as we werent ready and they told us we needed to be quicker. The food was good but the seabass was cold and flavourless.

My wife and l paid for a New Years Eve experience which is over £500 per person (set menu) as this was one of her favourite restaurants but sadly our experience was ruined by extremely rude reception staff trying to stop us from watching the midnight fireworks, this was caused by a miscommunication from management which is fair enough, it can happen but this adversely impacted our night, it would have been nice if the simple courtesy of an apology was given to show you care about your customers. We wont be back!

We booked Hutong for our special NYE lunch as I had such a wonderful lunch there last year with clients and had been singing its praises to my husband. Alas, when we arrived, we overheard another guest state that the restaurant was closing earlier than planned. We then had a minor panic as this meant we had 30 minutes to enjoy what was to be our NYE special lunch. (We arrived at 1.30 pm) We are very disappointed that Hutong did not warn us of this last-minute change, as we had made the booking weeks before. Luckily, the staff were helpful, and while our meal was a bit rushed, we managed to enjoy it. Although the vegetarian options were severely lacking, even though we had explained in advance as per Hutong's pre-booking enquiry regarding dietary preferences. Clearly, no one had read the request. The scenic views did not make up for all the shortcomings, and the restaurant itself lacked New Year pizzaze. From the moment we arrived, we felt we had to leave, not what you expect from a high-end eatery such as Hutong. We will not be returning and/or recommending to friends. The 15% tip was discretionary, which we paid as the staff did their best despite the challenges bestowed on them.

We had the Dynasty Brunch with the Empress Drinks package and Red Lantern dish (Soft Shell Crabs). Great service by Ansu. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.

Had to send back starters twice as they were like warm and third time they still weren’t as hot as they should have been but I gave up by that point. The wait time for the starters was too long too. Completely ruined the experience. The staff looked visibly stressed and mismanaged. I won’t be recommending them

We attended for the brunch service on New Years Day and the food was delicious. Hutong were able to accommodate a last minute change in our reservation which was much appreciated. On arrival, Mariame greeted us so warmly and was extremely attentive to our needs. She was even able to place us at a window seat for a great view. She gave us a great customer service experience and we would definitely return!

Exceptional food, exceptional service, and a great view.

Hutong is one of those places where you’re paying for the experience. The decor is stunning, with intricately carved wood, spacious seating, and breathtaking views over London. There are plenty of private areas, and I booked one for a party of 10, opting for one of the set menus. The food was delicious, but I’m giving it 4 stars because the portion sizes were disappointingly small—almost to the point of being insulting. For a restaurant where some mains exceed £70 and our total bill was well over £1,000, we expected more generous servings. That said, the food and atmosphere were faultless; it’s just the value for money that left something to be desired.

The food and the place was exquisite! The manager (female) on the other hand was extremely rude and mean to us! She did not even have basic manners! The Greek lady that worked there was delightful and made our night extremely special.

brunch was amazing, unlimited dumplings and delicious main courses! staff was surely overwhelmed but did their best to accommodate us, walked in without a reservation but ended up making the most of the brunch special (they extended the service past 15:30h for those like us who got seated late). Our server was named Francesco, very patient and good-humoured. Amazing views of the city from above too

Please Read If You Are a Tourist (1 Star) Positives: • Great location in the Shard. • Waitstaff are attentive and take time to explain the dishes, although they are quite straight forward. • Well spaced out tables so you don’t feel you are on top of other people. • Food is good quality and tastes great and rivals some dishes we’ve had in China. Negatives: • Restuarant is very dark, to the point where it’s difficult to see. • Insanely over priced dishes with no correlation to food quality. For example identical food in China would cost £20 a head (£50 in Australia) not the £130 we paid. • Two non alcoholic mocktails (I.e. cordial and ice) cost £30 which should cost a lot less, it felt like getting ripped off. • Finally after a pleasant evening an older woman in a gruff Eastern Europe accent came over with the Merchant Terminal for us to settle our account and said words to the effect “You give me tips now….”. I replied with you’ve just given yourselves a £50 tip in a non discretionary service charge I wasn’t aware of and certainly didn’t approve. On top of that you didn’t even wait our table. At which she snorted angrily took the payment and stormed off. This is definitely someone who shouldn’t be anywhere near customers, let alone working in anything that resembles a service industry. Overall One Star not because of the food or service they were ok or necessarily the prices of food or drinks which was expensive. But the icing on the cake is the non discretionary service charge of £50 (15% to total Bill) that they deceptively include at the end of service. The experience was certainly not worth of a tip, it was ok and with the ridiculously priced dishes and mocktails I don’t understand how they aren’t making good profits and can’t afford to pay their staff a living wage. TOURISTS be aware of the non discretionary service charge of 15%, it’s quite the sting at the end of the evening and if you’re not a local or used to tipping it feels very deceptive and underhanded.

Hutong is a must visit for amazing views of the city and great drinks (especially the Pisco Sour). Combined with the formidable hospitality, it’s sure to leave a mark! Shoutout to Saldron for his warm demeanour and great service. Would definitely visit again.

Good chinese restaurant with a great atmosphere and a stunning view on London. I recommend, by far, to go during the night because the atmosphere seems to be much better compared to the day. Indeed, the furniture and the decoration in general looks less impressive during the day. (as per the pictures).

We had a group booking and we were all vegetarians. The booking team was very helpful and put a vegetarian buffet menu for us. While booking process was smooth. At the venue, the staff were very friendly. The food was very good. We had a good view of London and warm environment with good ambience. Highly recommend the place.

Came for a family lunch (6 adults & 1 child). We opted for the dynasty brunch and left stuffed and very well looked after by the lovely Gabi. The service was great and the food came out quickly overall.
