Hungry Horse - The Tall Chimney in North West Leicestershire

On ordering 2 roast dinners we were told that the deal did not include alcoholic drinks (which we later found out this was incorrect). The food itself was rather unappealing and very dry. We later asked for and paid for 2 glasses of mulled wine. These had to be prepared and were served at the table. On arrival we were told that we could have no more as that was all that was left and were given 2 half measure glasses - no apology or refund! We later asked if they had any pear cider, they had not but did have many bottles of fruit ciders which were relayed, I also asked if there were any fruit ciders on draught and was told no so I purchased a bottle. I returned to my friends who informed me that it was 2 bottles for £7 or 1 for £5. I immediately went back to the bar to ask if I could have a second and pay the difference but was flatly refused, even though I had also been told there was nothing on draught. The whole experience was a shambles. The staff need more training on both customer service and products on the menu!

Had tea at The Talk chimney last night where we both had the big plate Tuesday specials at £5. Both had gammon, chips, tomatoes, onion rings, fried egg and peas. Cooked lovely as always and it was quite quiet so are food came quickly. Looks fab since the refurbished the place and it's more of a family pub now. Nice and quiet without the big sports t.v and loud cheating sports fans! Staff all friendly and always rushed off their feet as it's such a popular and busy place to eat. We love eating here but can you bring back the mini mixed grill with the liver and lamb chops on please as that was just the best meal ever!

They did an amazing job for breakfast with Santa . The kids loved it , great food as always from the kitchen staff. The floor staff really got involved and made the experience a whole lot more. Wouldn’t go anywhere else for this kind of thing . Brilliant all round well done guys.

I have been here loads of times. But recently the service and food quality has gone downhill dramatically!! On my last visit I heard loud music and swearing from the kitchen, the place seemed un organised & a male member of staff stood talking and ignoring customers. I won’t be returning

Went for their Dine and Dance today had a brilliant time it was well organized from seating us to reminding some of us what we had actually ordered, food was good, service excellent, and the singer they had was really good too, sang the songs that I and the other diners enjoyed. Special mention to Amy, Ria and Naomi and Kelly I think her name is .

A lovely visit with family. We ordered food, served quickly by Michelle who was very nice. Food was lovely we had Chicken New Yorker, Chicken Tikka Masala and two Korean BBQ Burgers buy one get one free on a Friday. Definitely go back again

Place is very nice but he wait at the bar was way too long. The barmaid was very nice and was working hard but the poor women was on her own with quite a few customers.

I had a great experience overall, and the staff were excellent—friendly and attentive. However, it was unfair for one lady to run the entire bar by herself. She did an admirable job, but having additional bar staff would have made the service smoother and taken some of the pressure off her.

went on monday for lunch we had the scampi and chips. what has happened to the portions they have been cut down mushy oeas you could get on teaspoon did they count the chips out scampi spread about to make plate look full it used to be a good meal will think twice befote returning

We are regulars for meals at the Tall Chimney although we just call it the Hungry Horse. 🐴 Today was a typical visit for food as part of our fortnightly "big shop" as Peter Kay calls it. In the main the food is consistent, in terms of quality and ingredients. Some licence to vary the plating by the different duty chefs means quantities can vary for side orders, however, where one finds a particularly stingy portion, quick request to a member of the staff always corrects matters. 👍😊 Today we were served by Michelle, who although retired from managing the facility, still works part time. She enjoys meeting the regulars and the comradery amongst the staff. Michelle looked after us well and I think her positive presence and experience rubs off on the other staff. A pleasant experience set us up for shopping. I can thoroughly recommend The Tall Chimney as a great venue to chill out with a drink, watching sport on the big screens or having a nice economical family meal out. See you again soon... 👍👍😊

Superb Friday meal. BOGOF burgers, as a family of 3 Kelly kindly wrapped up the spare. Great service and food arrived quickly and was delicious. New management is Awesome! great place to visit.

Called today 1st time and it was a truly great experience, we chose breakfast and i was totally amazed by the great value of my meal ,Hot tasty and cheap not just reasonable i actually mean cheap but good ingredients and as an ex chef im very picky . From the greeting at the door to the leaving Michelle was brilliant as was the other waitress/bar maid on shift ....Hoping to return very soon

It was meant to be a nice evening out with a friend but the staff were miserable non of them smiled at all not even when taking orders there was also plates and glasses left on loads of tables. We had starters and a lady had just put them OK the table didn't ask whose was whose didn't even smile then half way through starters our main meals came out. The food was lovely so were the drinks but the staff could have done a lot better to make our evening nicer. I work in hospitality myself and i was shocked

went for the breakfast deal have been before had good meal this time not so good found portions had been cut down when mentioned to staff there was hardly any beans she came back with small pot said this is the portion your allowed we measure them out. had also said there was an allergy to egg no sticker this time they seemed to have forgotten also bought both meals out toghter when before they said they couldnt do that staff didnt see as friendly seemed fed up on leaving said bye thank to lady on the door she didnt see want to answer what has happened to the nice friendy staff

Was lovely! Staff was so kind! I’m 26 weeks pregnant and had to make changes, they was understanding, kitchen did all I asked. :) Came back for a game of pool :) xx

Food was okay but not very warm, butter sat on the toast, toast burnt. The place felt cold and my god that kitchen door constantly banging is really distressing! The lady behind the bar was really lovely and a credit, thank you. If it wasn’t for her it was a bit miserable really :(

Thank you Ria for making it a great experience. We didn’t have a reservation and it was busy but Ria greeted us with a smile even though she’d been there since 8am. She found us a table, even brought us our food even though she’s a manager, and she was very pleasant and friendly. The food was good and the bar staff were friendly too.

Dinner with my 2 chikdren 6 & 8, straight after school, lots of thungs to keep kids entertained uncluding cbbs on tv at the table. Kids loved their build yiur own meal. Food tasted fresh and tasty. Very polite and helpful lad behind taking my order and Michelle was great with the kids. Felt safe to leave kids at table while I ordered. Nice family pub/restaurant.

I would like to say what a valuable asset James is to your team. He went out of his way to help us with the menu and actually used a cocktail stirrer to stir my lime and soda. I know that sounds trivial, but, not many bar staff even bother these days. Attention to detail and a pleasant smile go a long way. Well done James! 👏

This is our regular pub for eating out daytimes, and there's a reason it's our regular: the food is delicious and well prepared; the staff are so friendly and helpful; facilities are always clean and tidy. If you like entertainment, they regularly host quizzes, football matches, music nights. They always appreciate and act on feedback. For example, we recently had breakfast and the butter was so cold it was hard to spread... We mentioned it offhandedly and the next time we went for breakfast... Michelle remembered it and took the butter out early. Such a small thing, but made a huge difference! It made us feel really valued and guaranteed our future business. Michelle is always friendly and nothing is too much trouble for her :) Thank you everyone! See you again soon :)

Visited here for a meal on Wednesday 10th January around 6pm. The service was very slow and as for the food it was stone cold. The toilets they were dirty and the floor wet. I visited here in 2019 for Sunday lunch and it was amazing so whilst I was passing on Wednesday I thought I would try it again, but now will not return. I believe this is a Greene King pub and it’s not the first bad experience I have had in one of there establishments.

Called in on the off chance for breakfast and not disappointed.... Well cooked and plenty of it too....staff very helpful

Great pub with brilliant staff. The service and food was excellent and we did not have to wait to long for our orders to come out. So I would definitely recommend this to others to try it out.

Really great breakfast service on Saturday. I have never been served so quick ever in a pub. The food was delicious, the service was lovely (Michelle served us) and it was a great start to our day. We will be back.

Came here with grandchildren on a Sunday lunchtime. It was quite busy. Boys enjoyed their burgers. I enjoyed my pie, but pastry was a bit hard. My wife had some nibbly bits and brought some home wrapped in Tin foil.

I booked a table with no problems. The app worked great and I was able to order drinks and food from the table. I had the gravy burger which was delicious. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. We go for end of term drinks every half term and have always had great service and have felt very relaxed and welcomed. See you again in 8 weeks xx

We visited Sunday lunch time, we took our grandson for Lunch and we were greeted by a really friendly lady who found us a lovely table. A nice lad (think his name was James) served us at the bar. Are food arrived quickly and piping hot. The general manager Amy served us our food and was amazing with our little grandson. Will definitely be back. Quick service and have to say for how busy they were the food and service were both so good

Absolutely love the chimney, always a good apmoshmere and vibe. Me and my mother attended for some birthday drinks and a meal and had a brilliant time. Lovely lady on the front door antonia, very friendly welcoming face and then a lovely new lady Ella behind the bar, she was approachable friendly and bubbly. And a fireplace with milk an a treat for santa, ... Glowing beautiful lights along the windows.. Outstanding place we visited just before we went into lockdown! Staff were so helpful when we didn’t really know how to use the app and showed us how to use it and made us feel so safe in the current situation! As a family we had an overall amazing experience!

I visited the tall chimney on the Tuesday and was greeted by very friendly staff who seated us on a clean table. The app was very easy to use and when the food came out it was presented well. We were served by Bella and zoe who couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. There was a slight problem with one of the meals which Tom was very swift to sort out and again extremely helpful. Q brilliant last meal before lockdown.

Huge thank you to the staff for being so happy and friendly even during harder times such as now, I was greeted at the door by a lovely Thomas on my visit and Zoe and sharlie took very good care of me, usually I would’ve come in for drinks with my friends because the atmosphere never fails however due to new regulations I came for a household family meal and they didn’t disappoint at all, food was on point and the staff were as polite and happy as ever, thank you tall chimney and I will definitely be back again.

Well I came on Halloween with my 2 children and to much of my surprise the staff were all dressed up! I think this was just the spirit we needed for the children especially with all that’s going on at the moment and I truly believe that the tall chimney and it’s staff are all about the customer service and making your experience as pleasant and Covid safe as possible, I will definitely be returning not only because of the amazing staff but the prices are really good too as well as this I found out (the staff explained) that they have daily deals on including a bogof burger Friday and kids eat for £1 on a Monday, the staff also explained about their Christmas bookings as well as a festive party and many other things we can and will now book for, from what I can tell the staff take a lot of pride in what they do and I’m sure they will put their all into christmas, such a shame I didn’t get all their names but shoutout to all the staff dressing up and bringing a bit of positive spirit back into the pandemic!!!!

Visited this morning for the Halloween breakfast and it was amazing. Excellent value for money and the staff were fantastic as always. Crafts were brilliant for the kids, pumpkin decorating and a lovely bag full of crafts to bring home. Brilliant effort made for decorating the restaurant and the kids loved the staff being in fancy dress! Very safe and covid compliant, such a shame it wasn’t better supported but strange times at the moment. All the staff were fab but special thanks to Thomas who is amazing.Would definitely return for future organised events. Thank you

Got a takeaway for me and my partner, food was absolutely terrible, onion rings not cooked fries barely cooked food was just about warm. First time I’ve been and most certainly the last. Would have gave 0 stars if I had the choice

Visited this pub with my youngest daughter and my two young grandchildren. The staff were all amazing and made us feel very safe. Amy, Sydnie, Zoe and Brad were all very polite and nothing was too much trouble for them. Had two kids garlic bread starters and a cheesy garlic bread starter. Would highly recommend these as they taste amazing and just the right portion size.

Was in town today and was very wet so decided to pop in with my 18 month old son. The staff are so polite and helpful and food was beautiful. Lucy, Amy and Oscar are a credit to ur business, will definitely be back

Met at the door, asked to sanitise hands and check in on app. Escorted to our table and given new menus. Ordered from the table. Excellent service. Tables and chairs thoroughly sanitised between service. Bombay bird burger highly recommended!Felt totally safe during our lunchtime visit, although busy, plenty of space, plenty of staff. First time eating out since March. We will definitely be visiting again soon.

Really great service! I felt incredibly safe here. They definitely go above and beyond to make sure you are safe and ensure that covid measures are being taken. It was very clean here and I will definitely be back again!

Came on the 22nd of October, It was a wonderful experience, greeted by Martin a very good host, food was awesome a lovely young bar man Jesse took our order and made us feel so welcome he went above and beyond for us, only down fall was Oscar came across abit bullish, however the experience was till great 5/5

I come here with friends and we’re always welcomed by the lovely staff and great atmosphere. The food is delicious and good value for money. On top of this they have brilliant covid 19 rules in place that make us feel safe inside the pub. Would definitely recommend for all groups.

Needed somewhere quick for lunch.It was nice to find somewhere we did not have to book.Checked in ok. Had the Greenking app already. So ordered drinks ok. Decided to have the sharing platter and it was more than enourh for 2. I find using apps in house ordering machines difficult. I can never find what I want. Staff were very helpful but the seats could be a bit further apart.

Great service. Had the 2 for 8.99. The curries were lovely as are the desserts. A very good, value for money restaurant/pub.

First time I've been out since before lockdown. The lad that greeted us at the door and went through everything we needed to know, before he asked where we wanted to sit. I was ordering on the app but my friend had a blue light card and it wouldn't accept on the app so he took our order and then my friend had to go to the bar to pay. Everytime he walked past us he was asking if we was ok and if we needed anything. He made the whole experience seem as normal as it could be. He was well mannered and he even offered to ask me if I wanted extra hash brown because I don't like egg. Would definitely go again and I would recommend it as well

Came into the tall. Chimney today with my other half was served and greeted at the door by a young chap called Oscar his service was absolutely amazing and fully deserved credit for his very hard work and he helped with our order on the app he also corrected an order that we was told there was no bacon left so he came back and told us and he asked if we wanted to change our meal so we did he made us feel welcome will definitely be coming back here again. Oscar deserves something for his hard work.

It was my first time out with a friend into the new restaurant rules , not being at all IT savvy I went to the Greene king ( Tall Chimney ) Swadlincote l was greeted at the door by a extremely helpful young man called Martin who talked me though the whole of the signing in and finding the Greene King App process. We arrived at the time table booking and was shown to a table l explained that l may need help with the ordering on the App Oscar on the busy floor Service stopped and help us all though the process again in ordering our drinks and food Although l had to go to the bar with my mask on to pay a lady called Lucy was so helpful with this process.All in all we had a excellent experience and will definitely go back again thankyou Tall Chimney Swadlincote Food was excellent and service was excellent give it a go and don’t be afraid to ask ,Keep save and thank you

Hello,Went to tall chimney there’s 7 in our family so a table of 5 and a table of 2 tried to move the kids table of two because it is illegal to talk across two tables yet we all live together staff extremely rude and we ended up leaving!Not happy with the service!Ash

I visited the tall chimney on Sunday 27th September to be rudely greeted by the hostess and told no cash orders and that I had to order on the app, ended up staying for a drink and then leaving as I did not feel welcomed by her. I then visited wed 30th and although host wasn’t as rude still felt like a cold reception, however after I was seated Thomas and Zoe made me feel very welcome and explained I could pay cash?!Food was piping hot and delicious. Thanks for a lovely 2nd visit

I came here today for lunch my friend told me it was safe at the Tall Chimney as I have been very reluctant to go out to eat. We were met at the door and asked to give our details for track and trace. The lady helped us as I had no idea what to do. we were told to order from my phone app, which luckily my son had put on my phone for me.I was really happy with how this place made me feel. I did feel safe, I had Fish and chips which were nice. My friend had lasagne. Thank you so much for making me feel safe. I will come back

Been coming here for a few weeks now on a Sunday morning for breakfast with my friend, I have been suffering from anxiety & my experience here has really helped, big thank you to Zoe who served us as she was very courteous & polite

Covid procedures spot on , great food and service . What’s not to like. From the minute you walk in the door and out of the signposted exit you feel safe .This is a pub that has got a superb system in place that you would expect and without it being awkward you feel comfortable .The staff are attentive and hard working .Zoe and Oscar especially deserve a mention. We had two tables with four people on each . They brought drinks , breakfasts and all requests dealt with quickly without fail .The food was hot , fresh and tasty so credit to the kitchen staff as well who never get seen .Obviously serving tables has changed in recent months but The Tall Chimney and it’s staff have mastered the changes needed and embraced them .We spoke to the Manageress after our breakfast and complimented her on her staff. She explained the procedure for future bookings with the new regulations coming in again .All in all a great visit , great food with great service. Many thanks.
