Food and service was excellent from start to finish. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was cooked fresh, good quality and decent portion sizes. We will return.

Taking a trip down memory lane after 35 years & was surprised to find it still here! So pleased we paid it a visit as the food was absolutely beautiful with a large menu to choose from. Very reasonably priced (£55 for 2 main meals, shared rice & chips along with 3 alcoholic drinks & pot of coffee). The staff were incredibly attentive & very polite. Can’t recommend highly enough.

There are 3 Chinese takeaways in Thirsk. Our favourite was closed so normally the Hung Moy is second best. Wanted something simple so ordered 2 special chow miens and a mixed starter. The mixed starter was fairly average but the chow miens were both absolutely horrible. Tasteless meat, mushy noddle in a watery tasteless broth. The Hung Moy wins the award for the worst Chinese takeaway I have ever had.

My husband and I live locally and normally this restaurant and take away is really good quality food. Tonight we decided to have sweet n sour chicken Cantonese style to take out but sadly we were very disappointed indeed. The chicken was really tough and stringy the chips were horrible and scrappy the onion consisted mostly of onion skin in fact most of it went in the bin and the nicest part of it was the boiled rice and sauce. Wont go again for a long time good job there are more than this one in Thirsk.

My favourite dish is Singapore Vermicelli- slightly more expensive here than in other local takeaways and it is worth every additional penny.

Visited as a group of 5 and we couldn’t be happier the service and the food quality was 5*. Definitely now our go to Chinese restaurant, we will be returning. Thank you for looking after us.

A marvellous little place that really doesn’t stand out tucked away in a corner of the market square. That said the food and service speaks for itself. The food was fresh ,in large portions and very tasty. Great value .We were pleased with everything and our visit made a rainy and flood affected journey worthwhile.

I had Chicken chowmein and my husband had the mixed vegetables in black bean sauce. Both were delicious. Great service with a smile.

Walked in 30 mins early and got seated straight away. Ordered four person set meal. Course after course came out and all ingredients tasted fresh and hot. Service was excellent and staff were pleasant and helpful.

Food quality great. Last night I had the chicken and sweet corn soup followed by the beef in black bean sauce with egg fried rice. All the dishes were fresh and full of flavour. Service was spot on, and very welcoming.

Wow!! the Spare ribs in Peking sauce were unbelievably good. That's a reason to go on its own . The staff's attentiveness though was the real high point

I ordered my food within minutes of the restaurant opening and was given a collection time . Turned up at the collection time to have a 10 min wait , and upon getting the food home - 2 min car journey - over half the food was too cold to eat , as if it had been cooked and left standing whilst the rest was finishing. Spoilt a rare treat for us in this economic climate

On our recent visit to Thirsk we decided to ignore the negative comments about this restraunt and boy are we pleased we did. We started with a share plate for two absolutely excellent I followed with prawn with cashew nuts and my husband had the beef in black bean sauce along with a side of egg fried rice and a portion of chips. The portions were more than ample and every morsal was delicious. The staff were very attentive and lovely. To Top it all off the prices are very reasonable too. We will return. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this lovely place.

saw the flyer in our holiday cottage for this chinese resturant in the village, phoned on a friday night to book and table and as we were eating early we got a place, not a posh fancy place by any means, but clean nd fresh inside, the waitress was lovely, i think she was polish, she went out of her way for us and we were very grateful, she advised us on the menu and we were not dissapointed, started with two bowls of chicken and sweetcorn soup, then she brought a big bowl and ladel for us to help ourselves, the crispy duck and pancakes followed and it looked like a half a duck the portion was so big, i had sweet and sour chicken next and husband had king prawn curry, there were at least 10 king prawns in his curry and he said it was the best he had ever eaten,my sweet and sour wasfull of chicken balls and lots of sauce, the fried rice was full of prawns,chicken and beef too, i finished with a lovely coffee, excellent value for money and best chinese food we have ever eaten, praise to our waitress who was so lovely, she is an aset to your little business a real treasure.

We had a Birthday dinner to organise locally where all four of us love Chinese food, being Cantonese or Mandarin, we’re not fussy. The only Chinese “restaurant” in Thirsk is the Hung Moey. So following extensive research (Reading Tripadvisor reviews) we decided with so many favourable positive reviews we would book. Have to say not disappointed. Mixed Appetisers to start, Peking Aromatic Duck second course followed by Charsu Fried rice and Chicken fried rice, Crispy Beef, Szechuan Chicken and Singapore Style Chow Mein. Plenty to go at. All courses were enjoyed although we found the Singapore Chow Mein not exactly to our taste or what we have become accustomed. The service was top notch and flowed flawlessly. The staff were friendly, efficient and lots of fun. Now we’ve been we will be back in the very near future. Well Done Hung Moey.

We were a large party so the proprieter booked a dining slot for us all to be seated on two large tables. We all chose different meals which we all thought were very good. The service was excellent and we were made very welcome. The prices were comparable with other Chinese Restaurants.

We were here on holiday with the family and got a takeaway from here. Everyone one agreed that it was the best they had had for a long time. Particularly recommend the chicken balls and the beef in black bean sauce, although there could have been a bit more beef.

The staff are very friendly but the food was ok. It arrived quickly and was hot but the chicken in my chicken and mushroom was very chewy. I tried to eat it but gave up after a few attempts. The boiled rice was ok but I don't think i would rush to go back.

How refreshing to find an unassuming Chinese Restaurant in this day and age. Too many have tried to become too “posh” and it never works. This restaurant is beautifully clean and the service is second to none. Menu had all the usual choices and we chose salt and pepper spare ribs followed by Special curry and Chicken Satay. All perfectly cooked and what a surprise to find main courses served on traditional burners. All reasonably priced as were the drinks. Wish we had such a restaurant still around in Leeds.

Service was really poor, I clearly asked for a chicken curry with no onions but still got them in my meal. Was not really bothered by the mix up as these things happen, but was really annoyed by the serving girl who appeared at the table to give us hassle for the mix up trying to blame it on us.

Thought we would have a bit of a treat as I am always cooking and asked my daughter what she might like to eat and she most emphatically said Chinese. We thought about northallerton or Darlington but decided to go to Thirsk. Good choice! Very attentive staff and really helpful when choosing our food. Highly recommend and big portions .

Called in for takeaway told would be ready in 25mins this was 7.15 still waiting at at 8.05 !! Ridiculous. Food was inedable, salt and pepper king prawn was way too salty, beef chow mein was beef in noodles , chicken fried rice was undercooked. Will not be returning

Have lived in Thirsk for about 6 years but never used this chinese. The Magic Wok was closed on Wednesday night (strange) so I decided to try Hung Moey. Was served quickly and my request for curry with no onions and peas, just mushrooms, was not an issue. My husband had prawn chow mein. The food was tasty and I'd happily use this takeaway again. I have dropped a star as the chips were not the best - normally I love chinese chips - and also the order seemed to take a long time to come. Would recommend though.

Went here at the recommendation of the owner of the cottage I was staying in. Had what I thought was a chicken satay (see picture) but on reflection it was more of an oyster sauce - it certainly had no heat to it. That said it was delicious- just not what I wanted or ordered. Another one of us has chicken curry which was good as well but the chips were well over cooked. This would have been a solid four stars but for these faults.

we hadnt booked, but decided to give it a try as we saw it coming out of the pub next door. They made a table available and made us very welcome and made sure we were comfortable at our table due to it being sunny and being by a window. We had starters and mains and can honestly say it was really great tasting food. We had special curry, crispy shredded chicken and a chicken chow mein. There was lots of food and it was lovely!

Gluten free not a problem here . Even did husbands dish with gf soy sauce so I could have some ! Unfortunately that also meant I had to share my duck in orange 😕. Worth a visit

This is my favourite Chinese takeaway. So without hesitation we ordered from here to collect. There wasn't the usual faces behind the counter which was strange (I'm hoping it hasn't changed hands) i ordered amongst other things salt and pepper chicken and crispy chicken which were the exact same thing. I don't think anything had seen a chicken as it was only puffs of batter which were like dust when eating them. I managed a few mouthfuls and the lot went in the bin. Im Hoping this was a one of and is a case of 'when the cats away ' and when the boss returns it'll go back to normal and when i try next time I'll leave another review

Very expensive. Had a takeaway while on holiday in thirsk. Cost £24 for 2 if us, if we ordered the same where we live would have been £14. Wasn’t as nice either

Rather average night out. Food OK but would have preferred for it to be hotter. Not badly priced and plenty of it though. Service good.

Ordered a takeaway on a very busy Friday night. Said I would call back in an hour to collect it. When I came back the Chinese woman behind the counter asked what I had ordered and I had a bit of difficulty remembering exactly. She sarcastically and rudely said ‘what’s wrong with you, don’t you even know what you ordered’ in front of a packed waiting area. It was a bit embarrassing and nobody probably cared but I did.

Disappointed to award only three stars. The food was excellent, and the serving staff were great. We were in a hurry and they were able to accommodate us at short notice. Sadly, it seemed that the kitchen forgot our order. We were given plates in anticipation, but the food came 20 minutes later, and the serving staff were clearly embarrassed. As I said, the food was excellent, and the serving staff were delightful. Not often in this area, but were we ever to visit Thirsk again, I would give it another go.

Recently moved to Sowerby and now finding time to sample the local restaurants. This was our first visit to the Hung Moey and it most definitely will not be the last, absolutely perfect. We had the set banquet meal at £18 per person and it was excellent, beautifully cooked and presented. You certainly need to be hungry to do justice to the four delicious courses. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Highly recommended.

Arrived last night with family while on a camping trip. Restaurant wasn't busy but food was delicious. We choose for starters,chicken and sweet corn soup, king prawn fingers, prawn toast and spring rolls with free prawn crackers. Main courses consisted of special curry (extra hot) king prawn salt and chilli pepper, rice, chips and noodles, all beautifully homemade other than the re-heated awful chips, avoid! Rest of meal worth waiting for, lady with long hair waiter was very pleasant and polite esp with the children, younger waiter dressed in black clothes wasn't so pleasant but that didn't stop us enjoying it. Man owner came out and asked if all was ok. Proper traditional Chinese food, bill came to £64.00 including drinks for family of 4, just over £15 per head, not too bad. Only Chinese restaurant in thirsk and they have been trading for some years even since I was a child. Over 20 years same owners, worth a visit, small restaurant but very clean.

used hung moey for over 30 years 2/3 times a month its a 20 mile round trip but didn't mind as the food was good, then it started to go down hill so stopped for a while called in about teatime last night new look from the outside cleaned up inside looked good got the meal home and guess what rewarmed chips, now I remember why I stopped going wont be back EVER

We were staying in the area and choose this restaurant based on the good reviews. First impressions were the prices were on the high side, we weren't expecting "London prices". We ordered the mixed starters which were perfectly cooked and delicious - the prawn toast possibly the best I've had. The half a Crispy Duck seemed extremely expense but having ordered it anyway (it was my partner's birthday and you can't not have the duck) we were offered a quarter duck - which wasn't on the menu and this was just what we needed.The main dishes were huge and we'd completely over ordered in selecting 3 dishes and a rice to share. They were extremely well cooked and the prawn dish we ordered was fantastic. The service was very attentive. It was a lovely meal and we would recommend it - but just beware of the portion sizes and order conservatively.

I have been takeawaying from here for over twenty year. 95% of that is beef curry and fried rice. Never had a bad one yet. Excellent consistency and the service is brilliant and friendly. I like my beef curry a little hotter than usual. No problem, I ask for extra chilli's and it is done with no trouble. Last night was very busy but the service was fantastically efficient. And what about my beef curry, excellent as it always has been. Cannot wait for my next takeaway but I'll have too. It will not be too long before I return.

Friendly, good service. The food was nice rather than exciting, large portions a little bland. Early on a quiet weekday evening but seated next to an occupied table. Before we left this table was cleared and reused again.

My wife and I would definitely this restaurant. The food was some of the best I have found. Dishes where prepared to our exact liking, nothing seemed too much trouble. The size of the main course dishes are very large, two dishes would easily feed 3 (hungry) people, shame we left so much. Although the restaurant was not busy (18.30 on a Monday night) the takeaway trade was very brisk. It’s a pity we live 200 miles away or we would use this place regularly.

This is simply the best Chinese food I have ever eaten anywhere! It's just a shame I live 70 miles away from it....Booked a table for 10 (5 adults, 5 children) on a Saturday night. The small restaurant was fully booked when we arrived but did not feel crowded. The welcome and the service throughout the meal was excellent.The meal itself was simply stunning in every way. The 5 adults opted for the set menu for 4 plus people and it was a delicious banquet and I cannot pick fault with any of the food that was served.For the soup course, my table had a mix of chicken and sweetcorn and the hot and sour. Seriously best I've ever had.Then came a mixed starter course consisting of - Spring Rolls - I don't normally eat spring rolls as I find they are generally laced with beansprouts and not much else. Not these! Stuffed full of various meats and vegetables and not greasy in the slightest.- Spare Ribs - Meaty and delicious. Bones picked clean.- Crispy Seaweed - Lovely. Just wish there had been more!- Crispy King Prawn - Juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside. Not greasy at all.- Prawn Toast - Very tasty and the best I've ever had. Not greasy.Duck Course - Simply lovely. A palate cleanser for the main event.Main Event - Large bowl of special fried rice served with five dishes that I think were Crispy beef, King Prawns in black bean sauce (Juicy prawns and large black beans. I've always gone with beef with black bean sauce but this dish may well have swayed me), Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Char Sui with ginger and spring onions (the leanest pork I have ever had from a Chinese restaurant and the slices of ginger were a refreshing burst).We completed our course with Jasmine tea or coffee before rolling out the restaurant back to our lodgings!This place is firmly on my map and I would stay in Thirsk again just so I can eat here. It was that good and quite simply the very best Chinese food I have ever eaten. So in summary - if you go to Thirsk and you love Chinese food you ABSOLUTELY MUST VISIT HUNG MOEY.

I came here for a take away as I didn't fancy eating out one evening whilst on holiday. The service was fantastic. Got my food really quickly and it was absolutely lovely. I would highly recommend this restaurant and would consider eating in next time.

On a Friday night at peak takeaway time, I was expecting a wait. 20 minutes was a nice surprise. This is the best one in town in my view. A good special fried rice and the other dishes are what you'd expect. A pleasant and efficient service at the right price.

We have had takeaway's here for years and you could always guarantee the meal, chicken curry, chips, Szechuan, Singapore noodles were fab but the last two times have been worse than disappointing. Went back the 2nd time cos maybe it was a hiccup. No it was dire. The hot and sour soup was lovely that's why I'm going to give 2 stars. Can anyone local tell us if its been taken over or the original chef has done a runner

Stopped in for an evening meal. After touring China previously, this place was a long way short or real Chinese food. Reasonable tastes and filled a hole, but if after a real Chinese experience, look further afield.

After a few hours hiking at Sutton Bank and lake Gormire, we stopped in Thirsk and fancied Chinese. With no expectations we went in and were met by friendly staff. When we asked about making our vegetarian platters extra spicy, there was instant support in the form of instructions to the cook and an additional bowl with home made roasted chilli oil in case we needed even more heat. The food was super delicious and the portions were generous, even though we were both hungry we had to get some of it packed up for taking home. We visited Thirsk in North Yorkshire tonight for a meal with my hubby while we are on holiday. We fancied a chinese and went into the Hung Moey we hadn't booked because we went into Thirsk for a walk round and didn't know about any of the restaurants there. The Staff were very hospitable and welcomed us in. We had a set meal for 2 and it was Devine, one of the best meals we have had ever. We truly recommend this place.

Whilst on a short break to North Yorkshire, we tried the Hung Moey takeaway service and thought it was one of the most delicious Chinese takeaways we've ever had. There was plenty of it as well. It's relatively expensive but then you pay for what you get and you couldn't fault it.
